Multimodal nanotherapeutic systems capable of integrating photothermal, catalytic, and gas-mediated strategies offer powerful opportunities to overcome the limitations ofsingle-mode cancer therapies. Here, we develop a near-infrared (NIR) light-activatedbiomimetic nanomotor for targeted NO delivery and synergistic cancer therapy. Thenanomotor is constructed from bowl-shaped mesoporous polydopamine (PDA)nanoparticles loaded with Fe(II) as a Fenton catalyst and BNN6 as a thermallyresponsive NO donor (Denoted as PFB). To endow tumor specificity, the nanomotor isfurther camouflaged with MCF-7 cancer cell membrane (PFB@CM), enablinghomologous recognition and enhanced intratumoral accumulation. Upon NIRirradiation, PFB@CM exhibits strong photothermal conversion efficiency that initiatesthree synergistic processes: (i) self-thermophoretic propulsion that promotes cellularinternalization; (ii) heat-triggered decomposition of BNN6 for precise NO release; and(iii) heat-accelerated Fe(II) release from the PDA matrix. The liberated Fe(II) catalyzesendogenous H2O2 via a Fenton-like reaction to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS),which subsequently react with NO to yield highly cytotoxic reactive nitrogen species(RNS). This cascade amplifies oxidative and nitrosative stress within tumor cells, enabling photothermal, chemodynamic, and NO-mediated synergistic therapy. Thedesign of PFB@CM integrates homologous targeting, autonomous motility, and NIR-responsive multi-mechanism activation, demonstrating a versatile strategy for precisionnanomedicine and highlighting the potential of light-activated nanomotors for safe andeffective multimodal cancer therapy.

A phosphor that emits both white light and broad near-infrared (NIR) light is of significant interest across various fields, as it enables both visual inspection and NIR spectroscopic detection. In this study, we designed Dy 3+ /Cr 4+ codoped CaLuGaO 4 phosphors that emit both white light and broad NIR light ranging from 1100 nm to 1700 nm when excited at 450 nm. The white light is produced by the 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 15/2 , 6 H 13/2 , 6 H 11/2 transitions of Dy 3+ . The broad NIR light arises from the 3 T 2 to 3 A 2 transition of Cr 4+ . Additionally, energy transfer from Dy 3+ to Cr 4+ occurs in the Dy 3+ /Cr 4+ codoped CaLuGaO 4 phosphors, allowing for tunable ratios of white light to NIR light by varying the concentrations of Dy 3+ and Cr 4+ . A phosphor-converted light-emitting-diode was constructed by encapsulating the synthesized phosphors around a commercial blue LED chip, demonstrating potential applications in lighting sources and non-destructive spectral analysis.

Based on their distinctive manners of driving cell death, cuproptosis and pyroptosis exhibit significant potential in overcoming the apoptosis resistance of cancer cells. Nevertheless, limited copper concentrations and complex tumor microenvironment (TME) severely constrain the therapeutic efficacy. Herein, DSPE-PEG 2000 modified copper-nitrogen-doped carbon-based photocatalysts (Cu-NC@PEG) are developed as photo-activated reactive oxygen species (ROS) amplification systems to trigger pyroptosis and cuproptosis in a synergistic manner. Cu-NC@PEG enriches in tumor cells and generates a large amount of superoxide anions under the second near-infrared region (NIR-II) laser irradiation, followed by further induction of cell pyroptosis through caspase-mediated cleavage of Gasdermin D (GSDMD). The copper ions released from Cu-NC@PEG in the acidic TME can not only generate ·OH and consume the antioxidants to enhance ROS-induced pyroptosis, but also effectively activate cuproptosis through Cu + -mediated dihydrolipoamide S-acetyltransferase aggregation and Fe-S cluster protein loss. Simultaneously, the mitochondrial damage induced by pyroptosis leads to a considerable efflux of ATP and the restricted ATP availability could enhance the disruption of copper metabolic homeostasis, thereby potentiating cuproptosis. The increased tumor-inhibiting effects of the combined induction of cuproptosis and pyroptosis could be achieved. Statement of significance 1. NIR-II photo-activated copper-nitrogen-doped carbon-based photocatalysts (Cu-NC@PEG) were developed. 2. ROS amplification was achieved based on the photo catalytic properties and Fenton-like reaction of Cu-NC@PEG. 3. Therapeutic efficacy was enhanced via ROS-induced pyroptosis and Cu + -mediated cuproptosis.

Broadband near-infrared phosphors are essential to realize nondestructive analysis in food industry and biomedical areas. Efficient long-wavelength (>830 nm) phosphors are strongly desired for practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient broadband NIR phosphor LiInGe 2 O 6 :Cr 3+ , which exhibits a broad NIR emission peaking at ~880 nm with a full width at half maximum of 172 nm upon 460 nm excitation. The internal/external quantum efficiencies of LiInGe 2 O 6 :Cr 3+ are measured to be 81.2% and 39.8%, respectively. The absorption of the phosphor matches well with commercial blue LEDs. Using the fabricated phosphor converted LED illuminating human palm, distribution of blood vessels can be clearly recognized under a NIR camera. These results indicate that LiInGe 2 O 6 :Cr 3+ is a promising candidate to be used in future non-destructive biological applications.

Hydrogen therapy as an emerging strategy for anticancer medicine is attracting attention. However, the limitations of effective hydrogen storage and release have hindered its development and application for hydrogen therapy. Herein, a high hydrogen storage nanoquadruplex (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se based on a palladium-selenium core has been designed and shows enhanced intratumoral accumulation via an enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. High-efficiency hydrogen can be released from (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se, activated by near infrared irradiation (NIR), and combines with available selenium (Se) to produce highly toxic hydrogen selenide (H 2 Se), which in turn unbalances the GSH/GSSG ratio and induces ROS overproduction. The effect demonstrates that (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se irradiated by NIR significantly inhibits cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion and angiogenesis in vitro . Furthermore, irradiation of (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se by NIR can induce significant ferroptosis of cancer cells by triggering mitochondrial dysfunction, ROS generation and lipid peroxidation-mediated oxidative damage in vitro . Finally, NIR irradiated (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se also exhibits tumor-targeted photothermal imaging, and inhibition of tumor growth in vivo activating cancer ferroptosis. Importantly, (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se demonstrates excellent safety and biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo . Thus together, our findings support the rational design of an effective hydrogen storage (PdH 0.2 ) 4 Se nanoquadruplex with NIR-controlled release causing an unbalance of cellular GSH/GSSG and inducing cancer ferroptosis could be a highly efficient strategy for hydrogen-mediated cancer therapy.

Heavy-atom-free photosensitizers are potentially suitable for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this contribution, a new family of unsymmetrical benzothieno-fused BODIPYs with reactive oxygen efficiency up to 50% in air-saturated toluene was reported. Their efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) resulted in the generation of both 1O2 and O2–• under irradiation. More importantly, the PDT efficacy of a respective 4-methoxystyryl-modified benzothieno-fused BODIPY in living cells exhibited an extremely high phototoxicity with an ultralow IC50 value of 2.78 nM. The results revealed that the incorporation of an electron-donating group at the α-position of the unsymmetrical benzothieno-fused BODIPY platform might be an effective approach for developing long-wavelength absorbing heavy-atom-free photosensitizers for precision cancer therapy.

Photosensitizer-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) enables wireless tumor inactivation by releasing cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nevertheless, the activation of conventional photosensitizers typically depends on visible light with limited tissue penetration, thereby restricting their therapeutic efficacy in deep-seated tumors. To overcome this limitation, an upconversion implant was engineered to function as a flexible internal light-emitting device by converting deeply penetrating near-infrared-I (NIR-I) light into visible light. Specifically, a composite PDT nanosystem was constructed by linking NaYF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles with the rose bengal photosensitizer—whose emission and absorption spectra are well-matched—using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a molecular bridge. This PDT nanosystem was subsequently incorporated into poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) scaffolds fabricated via selective laser sintering. Under 980 nm laser irradiation, the upconversion implant was capable of wirelessly emitting upconverted visible light through more than 2 cm of an in vitro tissue model and generating abundant ROS via the photodynamic effect. In vitro cell experiments demonstrated that the system effectively eliminated tumor cells by damaging the cell membrane and cellular genetic material. These results suggest that the scaffolds possess significant potential as anti-tumor tissue implants and offer a promising avenue for the development of innovative tumor treatment strategies.

Phosphor-converted near-infrared light-emitting diodes (pc-NIR-LEDs) exhibit unique advantages over traditional NIR light sources, shifting the research focus toward high-performance NIR phosphors. The transition metal Cr 3+ ion serves as an ideal NIR activator, displaying highly sensitive emission characteristics that are strongly influenced by the primary crystal field environment. However, reports on Cr 3+ doping in SrLaGaO 4 (SLG) with a disordered structure as the host material remain limited. This study focuses on the synthesis of SrLaGa 1-x O 4 :x%Cr 3+ phosphors, where x ranges from 0.2 to 1.2. The optimized SLG:Cr 3+ phosphor demonstrates ultra-wideband NIR emission spanning from 650 to 1250 nm under excitation at 429 nm. Notably, the material exhibits superior thermal stability (ΔE = 0.35 eV, E G = 5.17 eV), retaining 66.55 % emission intensity at 423 K. Detailed optical analysis reveals that the emission from Cr 3+ -Cr 3+ ion pairs during the ( 4 A 2 , 4 T 2 → 4 A 2 , 4 A 2 ) transitions results in non-uniform broadening of the optical transition, which is one of the key factors contributing to its superior NIR performance. The output power of the pc-NIR-LED based on the SLG 0.99 :1.0 % Cr 3+ and 430 nm chip reached 0.418 W@150 mA. The results suggest that the novel SLG:Cr 3+ phosphor holds great prospects for advancing NIR lighting technology.

The development of near-infrared (NIR) mechanoluminescent materials that operate autonomously without external excitation is crucial for deep-tissue biomechanical sensing but remains challenging due to the scarcity of efficient, long-wavelength emitting systems. Herein, we report a highly efficient, self-recoverable NIR-I mechanoluminescent material based on Cr 3+ -doped MgNb 2 O 6 . Through strategic Li + co-doping for charge compensation, we achieved a 2.75-fold enhancement in mechanoluminescent intensity. The optimized phosphor exhibits broadband emission centered at 880 nm, representing one of the longest wavelengths reported for Cr 3+ -activated mechanoluminescent systems. This deep-penetrating NIR-I emission enables detectable mechano-optical signaling through up to 10 mm of biological tissue. Leveraging this capability, we design a proof-of-concept application as a smart, mechano-responsive liner for in situ monitoring of implant kinematics and positioning accuracy in total knee arthroplasty. This work not only introduces a high-performance NIR-I mechanoluminescent material but also opens new avenues for real-time, non-invasive surveillance of bio-implants and deep-tissue biomechanics.

In recent years, materials exhibiting multimodal luminescence properties from deep red to near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths have been a focal point of research, particularly in the exploration of applications within the realms of stress sensing and dynamic signature anti-counterfeiting. A pyroxene-type layered crystal structure compound, CaMgGe 2 O 6 : Mn 2+ , has been reported as a mechanoluminescent (ML) material. Upon incorporation into the host, Mn 2+ ions preferentially substitute for Mg 2+ ions, emitting deep red to near-infrared light (600–800 nm) within this six-coordinated [MgO 6 ] octahedral environment. The congruence of photoluminescence and ML spectra indicates that both types of luminescence originate from the same emissive center. The doping of Mn 2+ ions introduces impurity band, effectively reducing the optical band gap, as evidenced by ultraviolet diffuse reflectance measurements. Thermoluminescence results reveal three defect centers within the phosphor, whose concentrations decrease with Mn 2+ doping, correlating with a reduction in ML intensity. The ML mechanism of the phosphor is elucidated through the analysis of local piezoelectric properties within the crystal. Overall, this study may pave new pathways for the development of efficient near-infrared mechanoluminescent materials, showcasing potential applications within the biological domain.

The escalating global prevalence of obesity and its associated metabolic disorders now represent one of the most urgent public health crises. Despite the pressing need for safe and effective anti-obesity interventions, current therapeutic options are often limited by suboptimal efficacy and various side effects. Herein, we present a microneedle (MN)-based drug delivery platform, termed RES@hmPDA-Dpep/MN, for photothermal browning therapy (PBT) to combat obesity. This system integrates hemispherical mesoporous polydopamine (hmPDA) nanoparticles with resveratrol (RES) and an adipose-homing peptide (Dpep) for localized PBT. Under identical conditions, hmPDA maintains photothermal performance comparable to spherical mPDA, while exhibiting advantageous drug-loading behavior particularly under higher drug-feeding conditions. In addition, the platform supports localized delivery with NIR-triggered, on-demand RES release and thermogenic activation. In vivo studies demonstrate that the RES@hmPDA-Dpep/MN system effectively suppresses WAT expansion, reduces body weight by 16.1% ± 2.5%, and significantly improves obesity-associated metabolic dysfunctions, including hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis. Mechanistic analyses reveal marked upregulation of UCP1 and other key browning genes. Furthermore, the nanoplatform shows favorable in vitro biocompatibility and hemocompatibility, supporting its potential for further translational evaluation. Collectively, this PBT strategy may serve as a potential localized intervention for fat reduction and systemic metabolic improvement in the management of obesity and related metabolic disorders.

The rapid development of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic techniques has greatly stimulated the discovery of novel broadband NIR-emitting phosphors as advanced light sources. Herein, a novel double-perovskite phosphor La 2 MgHfO 6 :Cr 3+ /Yb 3+ that displays ultra-broadband NIR emissions with a full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of 333 nm is reported. The remarkable luminescence property stems from the multiple crystallographic sites, relatively weak crystal field, and efficient Cr 3 -to-Yb 3+ energy transfer (ET). The site occupation of Cr 3+ is elaborately verified by the Rietveld refinement and first-principles calculation. By controlling the ET process, the internal/external quantum efficiency (IQE/EQE), bandwidth, and thermal stability of NIR emissions are substantially improved. The as-prepared phosphors are further integrated into a miniaturized NIR light-emitting diode (LED) package, demonstrating superior performance in rapid nondestructive detection of structural failure in thin electronic cables. The results described here provide a novel pointcut for designing broadband NIR-emitting phosphors with desired optical properties toward applications in industrial inspection and medical diagnosis.
