Synergistic co-assembly of phytic acid and pluronic F127 for environmentally benign, mechanically robust, and fire-resistant silica xerogel monoliths

Chengdong Li,Lingfeng Li

PA/F127 co-assembly forms robust Si–O–P bonds and uniform microstructure in silica xerogels. • Xerogels integrate high strength, monolithicity, self-extinguishing ability, and thermal insulation. • PA's dual role enables rapid gelation, bypassing conventional slow acid-catalyzed growth. • Excellent fire resistance with minimal flame damage outperforms commercial silica aerogel sheets. • A green, additive-free strategy overcomes the flame-retardancy vs. mechanical-integrity trade-off. Conventional flame-retardant additives often raise environmental and health concerns due to their toxicity and persistence. Developing high-performance, inherently fire-resistant silica xerogel monoliths via scalable ambient pressure drying remains a significant challenge, as mechanical robustness, monolithic integrity, and flame retardancy are typically mutually exclusive. This study addresses this issue by introducing a green and synergistic strategy using bio-derived phytic acid (PA) and the amphiphilic block copolymer Pluronic F127 to direct the sol-gel co-assembly of a methyltrimethoxysilane/tetraethoxysilane (MTMS/TEOS) system. PA serves dual roles: as a potent biobased acid catalyst, it accelerates precursor hydrolysis, and as a non-toxic, multidentate cross-linker, it forms persistent Si–O–P bonds that chemically reinforce the silica network. F127 acts as a microstructure director, templating a homogeneous gel network with robust inter-particle connectivity. This cooperative action enables rapid gelation (within 1–20 min) and yields monolithic phosphorus-incorporated silica (P-silica) xerogels. The optimized material exhibits excellent mechanical performance (compression strength = 0.140 MPa, strain = 60.3%), outstanding thermal stability (90.3 wt% residual mass at 1000 °C), and superior fire resistance, showing immediate self-extinguishment and minimal damage upon direct flame impingement. It also provides effective thermal insulation, surpassing commercial silica aerogel sheets at a thickness of 3 mm. By replacing conventional hazardous flame retardants with benign, biobased PA and achieving a unique property synergy, this work presents a viable and environmentally sound design principle for advanced thermal insulation materials in fire-risk environments, contributing to safer and more sustainable material solutions. Bio-based phytic acid-amino acid/OMMT synergistic system for fire safety and performance-enhanced ramie fiber-reinforced epoxy composites

Ya-Wei Zheng,Wan-Meng Song,Ying-Jun Xu,Yan-Peng Ni,Yun Liu

A novel biomass-based synergistic flame retardant PALAOMMT was prepared via a simple process for EP/RF composites. • PALAOMMT 3 (3% OMMT) enabled EP/RF to achieve LOI 34.6%, UL-94 V-0. • 3% OMMT mitigated the negative impact of PALA on mechanical properties through enhanced interfacial interactions. • This work provides a green halogen-free strategy for natural fiber-reinforced polymer flame retardancy. Despite their advantages, such as low cost and lightweight, the inherent flammability of ramie fiber-reinforced epoxy composites (EP/RF) significantly restricts their practical applications. To address this limitation, a high-performance flame retardant, designated as PALAOMMT, was synthesized, and the resultant flame retardant was employed to modify the surface of ramie fabrics, which were subsequently used to fabricate the corresponding EP/RF composites. The flame retardant containing 3% OMMT relative to PALA (referred to as PALAOMMT 3 ) exhibited the most outstanding flame-retardant performance. With a 20% weight gain of PALAOMMT 3 on the ramie fiber surface, EP/RF-PALAOMMT 3 achieved a limiting oxygen index of 34.6% and a UL-94 V-0 rating, with its peak heat release rates reduction of 27.2% and 44.3%, while the total heat release decreased by 36.8%. The incorporation of OMMT promoted the formation of a denser and more stable char layer, which provided an effective physical barrier in the condensed phase. This char layer markedly hindered heat conduction and suppressed the release of combustible volatile products. Thus, this work not only presents a novel and effective strategy for improving the fire safety of EP/RF composites but also identifies key directions for the synergistic optimization of flame retardancy and mechanical properties in future research. Bio-based sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol double-network aerogels reinforced by phytic acid and MXene for flame-retardant thermal insulation

Zhennan Wang,Guoping Zhu,Yu Huang,Yadong Wang,Zongmin Zhu

Bio-based aerogels are attractive for building thermal protection and fire safety, yet sodium alginate (SA) aerogels are mechanically fragile due to loosely connected, hydrogen-bond-dominated networks, while PVA aerogels often suffer from moisture-sensitive structural stability. Here, we develop a high-performance SPMP composite aerogel by coupling an SA/PVA double-network with phytic-acid (PA)-mediated multipoint interactions and MXene-enabled reinforcement. PA densifies the polymer network via extensive hydrogen bonding and further bridges the matrix to MXene through interaction with Ti-containing sites; freeze–thaw-induced PVA crystallites and MXene nanosheets jointly improve load-bearing capability and thermal shielding. The optimized SPMP aerogel achieves a specific modulus of ~64.4 MPa·cm 3 /g chemical coordinationg −1 , a low thermal conductivity of 0.026 W·m −1 ·K −1 , and robust flame retardancy (LOI 33.9%, UL-94 V-0). After hydrophobic surface modification, it exhibits a water contact angle of 132°, enabling durable water repellency and self-cleaning. This study demonstrates that integrating PA-based co-crosslinking, 2D nanosheet reinforcement, and surface hydrophobic regulation can concurrently upgrade mechanical strength, thermal insulation, and fire resistance in double-network bio-aerogels, offering a sustainable route to next-generation building insulation and protective materials. Molecular engineering of cellulose-rich Caragana fiber with phytic acid construct high-energy phosphate sites for efficient rare earth capture

Xiaoxia Wang,Huan Zhang,Xiangyu Liu,Qile Zhao,Junjie Ding,Hao Yu,Wenbo Wang,Fang Guo

Sustainable recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) by adsorption faces an inherent trade-off among capacity, kinetics, and stability. We report a molecular engineering strategy that converts Caragana fiber (CF), a cellulose-rich waste biomass, into a hierarchical adsorbent (PA-CF) using naturally derived phytic acid (PA). PA acts as a green catalyst that restructures the cellulose matrix and a grafting agent that introduces abundant high-energy phosphate binding sites. In this design, phosphate groups distribute throughout a covalently integrated network instead of on external or pore surfaces, mitigating interfacial limitations of conventional heterogeneous adsorbents. Under optimized conditions, PA-CF achieves adsorption capacities of 224.22 mg/g for La(III), 262.47 mg/g for Gd(III), and 327.87 mg/g for Lu(III). Site energy distribution analysis confirms that high-energy sites (~40 kJ/mol) dominate adsorption and provides a thermodynamic basis for understanding phosphate–REE binding. The adsorbent performs reliably in complex matrices (seawater, tap water) and tolerates competing ions (Na + , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Al 3+ , Fe 3+ ). It retains >70% of initial capacity after five cycles. Mechanistic studies indicate adsorption proceeds mainly through chemical complexation and electrostatic interactions. These results show PA restructures cellulose into a covalently integrated network rather than surface-grafted ones, offering a transferable strategy for designing advanced carbohydrate-based materials for resource recovery.

Studying Corrosion and Adhesion Performance of a Phytic Acid Based Conversion Coating Post-Treated with Garlic Extract on Q235 Steel

Yong Lu,Huixia Feng,Haidong Xu

A green phytic acid film was prepared on the steel surface before the natural garlic extract was used for the post-treatment of the conversion coating. Then scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with X-ray energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) were adopted for micro-morphology and elemental composition determination of different samples. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurement were used to assess the adhesion properties of the prepared coating. At last, the electrochemical characteristic of the coating on the Q235 steel was examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves in a 3.5 wt. % NaCl. SEM and AFM studies have shown that a homogenous, flake-like coating with lower crack was deposited on the steel surface. Particularly, EIS studies have shown that the anti-corrosion performance of the coating that treated with the garlic extract was markedly improved. Simultaneously, the adhesion property with the subsequent coating adhesion was also increased.

Sustainable N, P co-doped hierarchical porous carbon via coupling phytic acid-melamine assisted hydrothermal carbonization with high temperature activation

Wei Liu,Zhengtong You,Shiqi Qin,Zhipeng Hu,Jiaxin Mu,Zhijun Zhang,Yanjun Xie,Qingwen Wang,Charles U. Pittman

Developing sustainable carbon materials with both dye adsorption and electrochemical properties offers a promising strategy for carbon neutrality. Herein, a coupled carbonization strategy was employed to prepare porous carbon with high-level heteroatom doping and hierarchical pores, involving the co-hydrothermal treatment of wood flour with phytic acid and melamine, followed by K 2 CO 3 activation. Phytic acid and melamine act as P/N sources and structural builders, promoting hydrochar formation via phosphate coordination and condensation reactions, resulting in a stable cross-linked network rich in N, P, and O. The resulting N, P co-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NP-PC) exhibits an ultrahigh surface area (2792 m 2  g −1 , a 344 % increase compared to pure wood flour-derived carbon), suitable mesoporosity (36 %), and tailored surface chemistry (19.86 at% heteroatom content). At room temperature, NP-PC demonstrates an exceptionally high adsorption capacity for methylene blue (3028 mg g −1 after 6 h contact) and rapid adsorption kinetics (90 % removal within 5 min), outperforming most reported carbon-based adsorbents. NP-PC retains an adsorption capacity above 2500 mg g −1 even after five regeneration cycles. As a supercapacitor working electrode, NP-PC electrode also shows excellent electrochemical performance, delivering a specific capacitance of 380 F g −1  at 0.5 A g −1 and retaining 273 F g −1  at 25 A g −1 . This study achieves the conversion of low-value biomass into high-performance functional carbons, providing a sustainable solution for integrated environmental and energy applications.

Epoxy graphene oxide from a simple photo-Fenton reaction and its hybrid with phytic acid for enhancing U(VI) capture

Hao Lei,Daohui Zhou,Jiao Tang,Xiaoping Hu,Ning Pan,Hao Zou,Fangting Chi,Xiaoqiang Wang

A novel approach to synthesize phytic acid (PA) functionalized graphene oxide (P-pFGO-7) treated by the photo-Fenton reaction has been designed, which has been used as an adsorbent for efficient capture of U(VI) from aqueous solution. The structure and morphology of P-pFGO-7 were characterized well. The adsorption property for P-pFGO-7 was comprehensively assessed by batch experiments, showing the high adsorption capacity (266.7 mg/g, at pH = 4.0, T  = 298 K), fast adsorption kinetics (~10 min), good selectivity for U(VI) and Ln-An ions in various coexisting ions and excellent regeneration capacity. With the assistance of various characterization techniques and batch adsorption results, it is found that PA makes the most contribution to coordinate U(VI) heavily depending on the P O moiety. P-pFGO-7 could be regenerated by 0.1 mol/L Na 2 CO 3 with ~95% desorption efficiency and reused well after five recycles. This present work provides a feasible route to modify graphene oxide and extend PA for potentially practical application in the removal of U(VI) from radioactive wastewater .

Synergistic inspiration of in situ growth technology and biomass phytic acid for designing durable flame retardant and antibacterial cellulose fibers

Yin Tian,Wei Tan,Lu Bai,Lei Tan,Ying Chang,Guixiang Song,Ping Li,Yuanlin Ren,Xiaohui Liu

Cellulose is an important natural carbohydrate polymer, and natural or regenerated cellulose fibers are widely used in many fields, but the flammability of cellulose fibers limits their further development. To address the issue, an in situ growth of P and N flame retardant chelates (IGPN) was employed in a LiCl/ N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solvent system to produce flame retardant cellulose fibers (Cellulose-IGPN@Li). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) proved the successful synthesis of Li-containing IGPN (IGPN@Li) as well as the effective introduction of IGPN@Li into the fibers. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of Cellulose-IGPN@Li achieved 29.6% and remained at 28.7% even after 30 laundering cycles (LCs). In addition, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) were reduced by 65% and 41%, respectively. Thermogravimetric-infrared (TG-IR) and cone calorimetry (CC) tests confirmed that IGPN@Li played an important role in the gas and condensed phases. Moreover, Cellulose-IGPN@Li had good antibacterial properties and moisture-dependent conductivity. This work provides a novel production method of durable flame retardant cellulose fibers with integrated potential greenness and economy.

Guoliang Liu,Zhiming Liu,Jinlei Li,Min Zeng,Zhiyun Li,Lin He,Fuwei Li

Development of heteroatom-doped porous carbon frameworks derived from renewable biomaterials is highly desirable. Here we report phytic acid-chitosan (PA-CS) hydrogel as a platform for facile preparation of N, P dual-doped porous carbon networks via direct pyrolysis . The hydrogel system shows great versatility towards incorporating graphene oxide or metal ions, providing a way to introduce graphene sheets or metal nanoparticles into carbon matrix as needed. After the incorporation of graphene, the obtained N, P dual-doped carbon/graphene (NPC/G) sample shows a large specific surface area (1824 m 2  g −1 ), with a mixed meso- and micro-pore volume of 1.04 cm 3  g −1 . Importantly, the NPC/G sample exhibits high activity towards electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction in both alkaline and acidic electrolyte, ensuring a high-performance air catalyst of primary zinc-air batteries. Hopefully, this work provides a new method for the preparation of porous carbon materials with desired properties for catalysis.

Phytic acid-chitosan/silicone polyurethane composite coating: A versatile strategy for flame-retardant, water-repellent, and antibacterial hemp cellulose fabrics

Longyu He,Zhihui Sui,Qi Zhang,Mengmeng Zhang,Bingchi Zhang,Yuxin Zhang,Xiangyu Cao

In this study, an assembly technique based on phytic acid-modified chitosan (PA-CS) and silicone-containing waterborne polyurethane (SiWPU) was developed to construct of a multifunctional hemp fabric integrating flame retardancy, hydrophobicity, and antibacterial properties. A stable multilayer structure was constructed via hydrogen bonding interactions between the phosphate groups of PA-CS and the urethane groups (-NHCOO-) of SiWPU. Research shows that PA-CS significantly enhances the fabric's thermal stability and decomposes at high temperatures to form a dense carbon layer, raising the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the hemp fabric to 35.1%, achieving a UL-94 V-0 rating. Compared with the original fabric, the PHRR, HRC, and THR of the PA-CS/SiWPU coated hemp fabric were reduced by 80.7%, 80.7%, and 65.8%, respectively. Simultaneously, the silicon component in SiWPU migrates to the fabric surface, resulting in a water contact angle of 133.10°, demonstrating excellent hydrophobicity and antifouling performance. Furthermore, the coating exhibits remarkable antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli . Following the coating treatment, the breaking strength of the fabric increased by 41.6% (warp) and 40.7% (weft), while the elongation at break improved by 28.6% (warp) and 27.9% (weft). Concurrently, the bending rigidity decreased from 4.93 cN/mm to 3.20 cN/mm, accompanied by a reduction in both static and dynamic friction factors. After 10 washing cycles, the fabric exhibited breaking strength retention rates of 94.2% (warp) and 89.1% (weft). This study opens a new avenue for the high-value-added and multifunctional utilization of hemp fabrics, demonstrating great application potential in fields including home, biomedical, and smart textiles.

Synergistic effects between phytic acid (PA) and urea on the extraction of uranium with porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) xerogel films

Tianxiang Jin,Qingyun Luo,Hongchao Yu,Bin Huang,Zhirong Liu,Yong Qian

A novel porous xerogel of phytic acid (PA)-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was fabricated via a straightforward condensation reaction between PVA, urea, and PA. Besides serving as crosslinking agents, urea and PA also act as the pore forming agents and adsorptive functional groups of this xerogel , respectively. The decomposition and gasification of urea during synthesis formed an interconnected porous structure, dramatically raising the content of PA groups in the material as well as expose more adsorptive groups on its surface.   This resultant structural characteristic allows the material to display outstanding adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate. Furthermore, the utilization of a compound crosslinker (urea/PA) can provide PVA with a sturdier crosslinking structure compared to the use of the two agents separately. As a result, the material shows excellent reusability, and its adsorption capacity can reach up to 89% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that there is a strong interaction between PA and uranium ions, conferring the material an impressive selectivity for uranium. This work could broaden insights into the tailored design and synthesis of polymer materials for the extraction of uranium.
