Influence of micro- and nano-plastics on phenanthrene adsorption at the root-water interface

Jiawei Zhao,Li Lu,Sitong Ye,Jiali Shentu,Yuyang Long,Dongsheng Shen,Min Zhu,Shengqi Qi,Dong Zhang,Jörg Rinklebe

The adsorption of organic pollutants onto plant root surfaces is an initial crucial stage in the transfer of these pollutants from aqueous or soil solutions to plant systems. This study explored the potential influence of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) (0.1–100 μm) on the process of phenanthrene (Phe) adsorption at the root–water interface. The findings indicate that MNPs can exhibit either promotional or inhibitory effects on the root adsorption of organic pollutants, depending on both their particle size and content. Specifically, both the sorption capability of MNPs for Phe and their tendency to accumulate on or within root tissues increase with decreasing particle size. These dual effects facilitate the accumulation of nanoscale MNPs (0.1–6 μm in this work) within roots, which function as efficient carriers for Phe and increase Phe accumulation in root tissues. In contrast, MNPs with larger particle sizes (1–100 μm in this work) exhibit reduced affinity for roots and are more prone to remain in solution, thereby exerting more pronounced competitive inhibition against the adsorption of Phe by roots. However, when the concentration of nano-plastics in the root water system exceeded the retention capacity of the roots, the excess nano-plastics could compete with the roots for Phe, potentially reducing overall Phe sorption by the roots. These conditional effects of MNPs as either competitors or facilitators (vectors) in the root adsorption processes of organic pollutants may account for the different roles observed in previous studies where MNPs exhibited varying effects on the plant accumulation of organic pollutants.

Influence of MoS2 loading on the formation and hydrogenation effect of loaded monolayer molybdenum disulfide

Xiaoning Zhang,Buning Chen,Jianwei Wang,Yusheng Zhou,Xueli Huang,He Huang

Background Molybdenum disulfide is one of the main catalysts used in slurry-bed reactors. However, monolayer molybdenum disulfide with high hydrogenation activity is extremely difficult to obtain owing to the van der Waals forces between layers. Methods MoTi-X catalysts with different MoS 2 loadings were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Changes in the active phase of MoTi-X during hydrogenation were also analyzed by TEM, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. Significant findings MoTi-X catalysts synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal process allowed for the simultaneous generation of monolayer MoS 2 and hydrogenation. The results of the phenanthrene-phenol co-hydrogenation system showed that the different active sites on MoS 2 were responsible for its Hydrogenation and Hydrodeoxygenation properties. Using MoTi-X to catalyze coal tar (CT) hydrogenation, the total content of gasoline and diesel fractions was increased by 11.3 %, which is 3.3 times more effective than industrial four-stage hydrogenation. The average molecular mass, viscosity, and density of the coal tar were reduced by 35 %, 96 %, and 6 %, respectively. The application of MoTi-X catalysts for CT hydrogenation can fill the gap in the research on CT slurry-bed hydrogenation catalysts and improve the competitiveness of enterprises.

Insight into the Nature of Nickel Active Sites on the NiAl2O4 Catalyst for Phenanthrene Hydrogenation Saturation

Tao Tian,Ze-Min Zhao,Yu Zhang,Jieying Jing,Wen-Ying Li

Hydrogenation saturation of phenanthrene (a typical component of coal tar) could not only improve the combustion performance of fuel oil, but also obtain the raw material for preparing high-energy-density fuel. Nickel-based catalysts have been considered promising catalysts for the hydrogenation saturation of phenanthrene due to their appealing capacity to activate phenanthrene molecules. However, the Ni derivation precursor greatly affects its hydrogenation activity. In this work, the NiAl2O4 catalyst was obtained by the sol–gel method. Under the experimental conditions of temperature 300 °C, pressure 5 MPa, and WHSV 0.52 h–1, the phenanthrene conversion over NiAl2O4 catalysts can be up to 99.7 and 93.9% for perhydrophenanthrene yield, while those of the traditional Ni/Al2O3 catalysts are just up to 96.8 and 77.3%, respectively. Moreover, the TOF of phenanthrene hydrogenation of the NiAl2O4 catalyst (3.01 × 10–3 s–1) surpasses that of the traditional Ni/Al2O3 catalyst (2.46 × 10–3 s–1), which indicates that Ni derived from NiAl2O4 has stronger phenanthrene hydrogenation activity. According to relevant characterizations, the superior hydrogenation performance of the NiAl2O4 catalyst derives from the stronger H2 adsorption and dissociation ability and the formation of an electron-deficient structure of active metal Ni, which contributes to the improved adsorption and activation of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Methane hydrate formation in amino acids / sodium montmorillonite systems

Yun Li,Xuechi Liu,Meng Han,Zhouhua Wang,Ruixin Shi,Haoqi Liao,Bao Yuan,Pengfei Wang,Songbai Han,Jinlong Zhu

To understand the occurrence of natural gas hydrates in seabed sediments, it is crucial to examine the mechanisms of methane (CH 4 ) hydrate formation in sodium montmorillonite (Na-Mt) systems in the presence of amino acid. Accordingly, this study employed kinetics experiments and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate CH 4 hydrate nucleation and growth in an Na-Mt system containing alanine (Ala), leucine (Leu), and phenylalanine (Phe), respectively. Kinetics and Raman experiments showed that, compared with Ala, Leu and Phe enhanced hydrogen bonding between water molecules surrounding Na-Mt. This enhancement was due to the long carbon chain of Leu and the phenyl ring of Phe and facilitated CH 4 hydrate formation. Moreover, in the Na-Mt system, Ala reduced CH 4 consumption, whereas Leu and Phe increased CH 4 consumption. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the strength of electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged Na-Mt surface and the functional groups of amino acids affected the distribution of amino acids, thereby altering CH 4 aggregation and CH 4 hydrate nucleation processes. The strong interaction between Na-Mt and Ala significantly disrupted interfacial interactions between Na-Mt and water molecules. In contrast, the weaker interactions between Na-Mt and Leu and Phe, respectively, meant that these amino acids affected CH 4 hydrate nucleation in the bulk-like solution by influencing the arrangement of water molecules. These findings indicate that interfacial interactions between Na-Mt and amino acids play a crucial role in CH 4 hydrate formation. Overall, this study generated insights into the formation kinetics and nucleation properties of CH 4 hydrates in clay mineral–amino acid complexes that may increase understanding about the occurrence of natural gas hydrates in marine sediments.

Modification of Microporous Organic Network with Amino Acid for HILIC/RPLC Mixed-Mode High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

Li Han,Cui Yuanyuan,Zhen Changqing,Lin Xiaohui,Li Ke,Yang Chengxiong

Microporous organic network (MON) has emerged as efficient stationary phases for high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation. Nevertheless, the inherent superhydrophobic networks made their applications limited in the reversed-phase (RP) mode. In this work, a novel amino acid L-cysteine (L-Cys) modified core-shelled microsphere MON@SiO 2 -L-Cys was synthesized via the efficient thiol-yne “click” reaction for hydrophilic interaction chromatography /reversed-phase liquid chromatography (HILIC/RPLC) mixed-mode chromatographic separation. Baseline separation of various hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds including aromatic ketones, phthalate esters, alkylbenzenes, amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, nucleosides, nucleic acid bases, sulfonamides, water-soluble vitamins, cephalosporin antibiotics, and estrogens was realized on MON@SiO 2 -L-Cys packed column based on the predesigned mixed-mode retention mechanisms. The MON@SiO 2 -L-Cys packed column also exhibited higher selectivity compared to bare SiO 2 , MON@SiO 2 without L-Cys, and C 18 packed columns, revealing the synergistic interactions of MON’s networks and the modified L-Cys molecules. This work provided a feasible way to construct a novel amphipathic MON-based stationary phase, broadened the application scope of MON for hydrophilic analytes, and uncovered the prospects of MON in mixed-mode HPLC.

Optimization of solvent cooling crystallization process for separating phenanthrene from 9-fluorenone by COSMO-RS and solubility calculation approach

Lei Tian,Mengni Pan,Cuiping Ye,Hongbo Hao,Wenying Li

Phenanthrene (Phe) and fluorene (Flu) are crucial chemical intermediates with applications in materials, medicine, and pesticides. However, conventional separation methods struggle to effectively isolate phenanthrene from fluorene due to their similar physical properties. To address this challenge, a reaction–separation coupling technique was employed to convert fluorene into 9-fluorenone (9-Fluo), followed by the separation of phenanthrene from 9-fluorenone using solvent-cooling crystallization. Initially, the relative solubilities of phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone in 2072 solvents were calculated using COSMO-RS for preliminary screening. Among various conventional short-chain aliphatic alcohols and low-carbon saturated hydrocarbons, methanol, and cyclohexane were identified as the most effective solvents based on their solubility selectivity (SS). The molecular interactions between phenanthrene or 9-fluorenone and these solvents were analyzed using theoretical methods such as σ-potential/profile, infinite dilution activity coefficients in COSMO-RS, and Hansen solubility parameters, with further confirmation from FTIR tests. The optimal liquid–solid ratios were determined using both phase diagram measurements and solubility calculations. The reaction conversion of fluorene to 9-fluorenone was complete regardless of the raw material used. Phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone were effectively separated using methanol and cyclohexane with optimum liquid–solid mass ratios of 1.6:1 and 2.8:1, respectively. In the model mixture, the contents of phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone exceeded 98 wt%, with yields above 91 wt%. For anthracene residue, the content of 9-fluorenone reached 93.98 wt% with a yield of 84.52 wt%, while its content was only 76.58 wt% due to the accumulation of other components in phenanthrene.

Naphthalene Enhances Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Soil and Water: Effect and Mechanism

Bo Li,Hulong Liu,Xiaona Liu,Li Han,Jing Yang,Lingke Kang,Liuyuan Tang,Tianwei Qian

Bioremediation is a promising technique owing to its effectiveness, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Previous studies have focused on the degradation efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and water. However, the expression of PAH-catabolic genes in organisms involved in the degradation process has been rarely and unsystematically reported. In this study, a PAH-degrading strain—Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PQ249631)—was successfully isolated from coking-contaminated soil and used for PAH degradation in soil and water. Furthermore, the degradation of PAHs (naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene) was investigated in single, binary, and mixture systems to explore the interaction of substrates. The results showed that when naphthalene was used as a cometabolite carbon source, the removal rates of fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene increased from 14.33%, 17.25%, 6.61%, and 4.47% to 72.08%, 100.00%, 15.63%, and 6.63%, respectively. In a PAH mixture, the degradation rate of each PAH was higher when naphthalene, rather than glucose, was used as the cometabolite carbon source. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant differential expression of PAH-catabolic genes and ATP-binding cassette transporter-related genes under naphthalene stress. The enhanced degradation of PAHs could be attributed to the augmentation of the PAH metabolic pathway and membrane transportation, facilitating the transfer of PAHs to bacteria. These findings underscore the effectiveness ofP. aeruginosaas a PAH degrader and provide molecular insights into enhancing PAH degradation.

Nanoscale-controlled organicinorganic hybrid spheres for comprehensive enrichment of ultratrace chlorobenzenes in marine and fresh water

Yixin Kuang,Suxin Zhou,Yuefan Liu,Xiaoying Feng,Luyi Chen,Juan Zheng,Gangfeng Ouyang

The size of the adsorbent has the potential to influence extraction performance, but the size effect at the nanoscale is still poorly understood. In this study, organic-inorganic hybrid nanospheres (OIHNs) with controllable nanoscale sizes of 30, 50, and 100 nm were successfully prepared. These materials were further fabricated as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coatings with similar thicknesses, and coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate their extraction performance. The results showed that the extraction capacities of OIHNs for chlorobenzenes (CBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were much better than those of their corresponding derived carbon materials, despite the smaller specific surface areas and lower porosities of them. In addition, the enrichment performance increased significantly with decreasing particle size, and the OIHN-30 coating demonstrated the best performance, with enrichment factors ranging from 1098 to 6853 for CBs. Finally, a highly sensitive and practical analytical method was established with a wide linear range of 0.5–5000 ng·L −1 , and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.43–1.7 ng·L −1 . The determinations of ultratrace CBs in five marine water samples and five fresh water samples were realized successfully. This study is expected to contribute to a deep understanding of the environmental effects of nanoparticles and the design of high-performance adsorbents.

EuNPs-MAb fluorescent probe based immunochromatographic strip for rapid and sensitive detection of fluorene

Bin Qiao,Yansong Li,Pan Hu,Yu Sun,Zhaozhao Si,Shiying Lu,Honglin Ren,Zengshan Liu,Ying Zhang,Lei Meng,Yu Zhou

Fluorene is a priority pollutant in water listed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A fluorescent probe using Eu(III)-marked polystyrene nanoparticles (EuNPs) labelled with a monoclonal antibody (MAb) was synthesized and an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on the probe (EuNPs-MAb) was developed for rapid and sensitive detection of fluorene in water samples. The concentration of fluorene was inversely proportional to fluorescence intensity values of T-line in the range 0.98–62.50 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) for quantitative detection of fluorene was 0.09 ng/mL. Recoveries of fluorene in various water samples ranged from 81.50% to 103.00% and coefficients of variation (CVs) were below 13%, which were in a good agreement with those of traditional ELISA (R 2  = 0.99). The assay can be performed within 30 min. The integrated ICA strip gave higher sensitivity and reliable reproducibility. It could be a potential method for rapid and sensitive detection of fluorene in water samples.

A simple approach to prepare a sulfone-embedded stationary phase for HPLC

Dan Liu,Ting Qiao,Haiyan Liu,Xiaoling Wang,Zhi-guo Shi

In the present study, a polar-embedded reversed-phase liquid chromatographic stationary phase that contained internal sulfone groups was prepared. The synthesis involved the “thiol-ene” click chemistry between the vinyl functionalized silica and 1-octadecanethiol, followed by the oxidization of sulfide to sulfone groups. The resulting material simultaneously possessed the alkyl chain, i.e. C18, and the internal sulfone groups. Elemental analysis demonstrates that the element contents of the C18/sulfone silica were C 8.94%, H 1.87% and S 0.66%. Chromatographic evaluations indicate that the C18/sulfone stationary phase exhibited a little less retention than the C18/sulfide one. A comparable chromatographic performance of neutral analytes was obtained on these two columns, but much better chromatographic performance in the case of basic and acid analytes was obtained on C18/sulfone stationary phase with additional features such as lower silanol activity, better stability (stable working conditions of pH 1.0–10.0), and better compatibility with 100% aqueous mobile phases. The batch-to-batch reproducibility was acceptable (the RSDs of retention times for the probes were no higher than 1.73%), demonstrating the suitability of the applied synthetic strategy for the new stationary phase. The C18/sulfone is a promising polar-embedded RPLC stationary phase.

Effects of Sphingomonas sp. GY2B on the structure and physicochemical properties of stearic acid-modified montmorillonite in the biodegradation of phenanthrene

Bo Ruan,Pingxiao Wu,Xiaolin Lai,Huimin Wang,Liping Li,Liya Chen,Chunxi Kang,Nengwu Zhu,Zhi Dang,Guining Lu

The objective of this study was to investigate the interaction between stearic acid-modified montmorillonite (SA-Mt) and Sphingomonas sp. GY2B and its effect on the physical and chemical properties of montmorillonite in the 2   days' biodegradation of phenanthrene . Due to bacterial activities , surface and colloidal properties of the bacteria-treated sample evidently changed in comparison with the untreated SA-Mt. Changes in surface morphology and the agglomerate state of SA-Mt were clearly observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after interaction with GY2B for 2   days. Although the interlayer space of SA-Mt structure remained basically unchanged, the decrease of the structural order and the appearance and shift of several absorbance bands in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra verified the structural changes of SA-Mt after bacterial treatment . Besides, the second derivative infrared spectra indicated that bacterial growth and metabolism largely affected the microstructure in SA-Mt. Dissolution rates of major elements were obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) in the solution, which revealed that bacterial activities enhanced the release of major elements and brought about a significant higher dissolution of Si preferentially from the tetrahedral sheet edges of SA-Mt than Al. The improvement of elemental dissolution in the biotic experiment was attributed to the combined action of pH effect and ligand-promoted process. These results substantiated that microorganisms have a considerable influence on the physicochemical properties and structure in the clay-modulated biodegradation of organic compounds. This study has profound impacts on the clay-modulated biodegradation of hydrophobic organic contaminants in the environment.

Prediction of Dispersive Liquid–Liquid Microextraction Enrichment Effect of Aromatic Organics by [OMIM] [PF6] Ionic Liquid Based on Atom-Type Electrotopological State Indices

Liu Wei,Quan Ji

In this work, a quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) model based on atom-type electrotopological state (E-state) indices has been developed for predicting the dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) enrichment effect for aromatic organics by using 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([OMIM][PF 6 ]) ionic liquid as extractant. The enrichment factors of the aromatic organics obtained through DLLME-IL process were used as the dependent variable of the multiple linear regression (MLR) equation. The E-state indices of those organic compounds which combined together both electronic and topological characteristics of the analyzed molecules were used as molecular structure descriptors and the independent variable of the equation. The squared correlation coefficient R 2 for the MLR was 0.992 for the training set of 33 compounds. For the test set of 8 compounds, the linear regression coefficient was R 2  = 0.985. The results of this study showed that it can successfully predict enrichment factors of [OMIM][PF 6 ] in DLLME by using atom-type E-state indices, which can provide one more way for predicting the ability of ionic liquid to extract organic compounds based on their molecular structures.
