The potential use of n-type small organic molecules in electrodes has attracted significant attention in organic electronics owing to the easy, high-yield purification processes of organic compounds. However, only few studies have reported high-efficiency supercapacitors based on n-type organic materials. Nevertheless, most n-type organic compounds possess low capacitance and poor cycling efficiency. Therefore, it is crucial to develop n-type organic compounds that demonstrate good electrochemical properties for use in electrodes. Herein, both the (E)-N-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylidene)-6,6,10,10-tetramethyl-4-phenyl-6,7,8,9,10,10a-hexahydro-5H-6a,9-methanobenzo[H]quinazolin-2-amine (TPAB) and (E)-N-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylidene)-4-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-6,6,10,10-tetramethyl-6,7,8,9,10,10a-hexahydro-5H-6a,9-methanobenzo [h]quinazolin-2-amine (TPANB) compounds containing electrochromic (EC) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) groups were synthesized from triphenylamine (TPA) and quinazoline derivatives, and their structure and properties were investigated. These novel electrode materials demonstrate high EC and fluorescence performance just as a typical n-type semiconductor. The coloring time of a TPANB film is 4.00 s, whereas the bleaching time is 3.00 s. Compared with TPANB, TPAB electrode material demonstrate a high area-specific capacitance (2.38 mF cm −2 at 0.05 mA cm −2 ), outstanding the charge and discharge rate performance (93% with the current density of 0.05–0.25 mA cm −2 ), and excellent cycling performance (78.51%) after 300 cycles. Above all, the multifunctional materials hold good potential for intelligent display energy storage. Graphical Abstract

Two acylhydrazone derivatives with long-chain alkyl groups, DHS (salicylaldehyde-based) and DHN (naphthaldehyde-based), were designed and synthesized. Both compounds exhibited supramolecular gelation abilities, and DHN was a supergelator for benzene. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that DHS forms dimers via intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies showed that DHS adopts different repeating units in benzene and propanol gels. Based on the results obtained from single-crystal structure, PXRD, and mass spectrometry measurements, a plausible self-assembly evolution of gelator molecules was proposed. This work demonstrated that the single-crystal structures could provide critical insights into the molecular packing of the gel state. The fluorescence spectra and in situ monitoring of the gelation process confirmed that both DHS and DHN possess typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Notably, DHS functions as a highly sensitive optical chemosensor for Al3+, achieving quantitative detection with a remarkable minimum detection limit of 4.79 nM.

The preparation of anti-counterfeiting textiles is usually associated with laborious processes, high cost and environmental risks. In this work, the core–shell colloidal nanospheres composed of the polystyrene (PS) core with embedded aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules of tetraphenylethene (TPE) and the shell of densely crosslinked PS ((PS-TPE)@CPS) were designed and synthesized via emulsion polymerization. The patterned fluorescence-responsive photonic crystals (FRPCs) were then constructed using the (PS-TPE)@CPS nanospheres as building blocks on textile substrates via screen printing. Thanks to the compatibility and affinity of TPE with PS and its own AIE property, the TPE molecules enriched in the PS core and then aggregated and embedded within (PS-TPE)@CPS colloidal nanospheres. Confined by the polymer chains, the TPE molecules formed π-π stacking and exhibited AIE effect, while maintaining a stable conjugated structure. The FRPC anti-counterfeiting patterns constructed with the (PS-TPE)@CPS nanospheres exhibited angle-dependent structural colors under visible light and sensitive responsive fluorescence characteristic under ultraviolet light, realizing the double anti-counterfeiting effect. This approach to achieve anti-counterfeiting textile is simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. The obtained FRPC patterns possess excellent optical properties and anti-counterfeiting functions, meeting the requirements for the sustainable structural coloration of textiles, and also promoting the practical application of responsive photonic crystal anti-counterfeiting textiles.

Background Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a pioneering and effective anticancer modality with low adverse effects and high selectivity. Hypochlorous acid or hypochlorite (HClO/ClO − ) is a type of inflammatory cytokine. The abnormal increase of ClO − in tumor cells is related to tumor pathogenesis and may be a “friend” for the design and synthesis of responsive phototherapy agents. However, preparing responsive phototherapy agents for all-in-one noninvasive diagnosis and simultaneous in situ therapy in a complex tumor environment is highly desirable but still remains an enormously demanding task. Results An acceptor-π bridge-donor-π bridge-acceptor (A-π-D-π-A) type photosensitizer TPTPy was designed and synthesized based on the phenothiazine structure which was used as the donor moiety as well as a ClO − responsive group. TPTPy was a multifunctional mitochondria targeted aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer which could quickly and sensitively respond to ClO − with fluorescence “turn on” performance (19-fold fluorescence enhancement) and enhanced type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation to effectively ablate hypoxic tumor cells. The detection limit of TPTPy to ClO − was calculated to be 185.38 nM. The well-tailored TPTPy anchoring to mitochondria and producing ROS in situ could disrupt mitochondria and promote cell apoptosis. TPTPy was able to image inflammatory cells and tumor cells through ClO − response. In vivo results revealed that TPTPy was successfully utilized for PDT in tumor bearing nude mice and exhibited excellent biological safety for major organs. Significance and novelty A win-win integration strategy was proposed to design a tumor intracellular ClO − responsive photosensitizer TPTPy capable of both type I and type II ROS production to achieve photodynamic therapy of tumor. This work sheds light on the win-win integration design by taking full advantage of the characteristics of tumor microenvironment to build up responsive photosensitizer for in situ PDT of tumor.

Oxygen-dependent photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment based on aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) photosensitizer shows limited efficiency in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). To overcome tumor hypoxia-induced PDT resistance, a bonsai-inspired oxygen self-sufficient photodynamic cancer therapeutic system was developed based on AIEgen/vermiculite nanohybrid . Ultrathin nanosheets (NSs) were synthesized by lithium-ion intercalation from potting soil vermiculite for AIEgen photosensitizer (DCPy) loading through electrostatic attraction to produce NSs@DCPy (nano bonsai). When NSs@DCPy was absorbed by hypoxic the tumor and exposed to white light radiation, the NSs@DCPy could not only produce 1 O 2 and·OH but also catalyze the H 2 O 2 to generate O 2 for alleviating hypoxia significantly improving PDT efficacy. Surprisingly, NSs@DCPy could induce ferroptosis of the tumor by iron overload and depleting glutathione (GSH). Therefore, we provide a bonsai-inspired AIEgen-vermiculite nanohybrid platform for ferroptosis-assisted oxygen self-sufficient photodynamic cancer therapy.

Accurate temperature monitoring holds significant scientific importance in fields such as industrial manufacturing and biomedical applications. However, conventional fluorescent thermometers, commonly relying on single-response mechanisms, suffer from inherent drawbacks including thermally induced fluorescence quenching that makes the observed phenomena difficult to discern, poor resistance to environmental interference, and inadequate detection accuracy. To address the aforementioned limitations, this study developed a novel temperature sensing approach based on dual-signal responses from phase transition and fluorescence. The sensor (HPEI-IBAm/DIBA), through the synergistic action of isobutyryl-capped hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI-IBAm) and the aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active fluorogen 4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzoic acid (DIBA), enables dual-signal output of both fluorescence intensity and transmittance. Based on the temperature sensitivity of HPEI-IBAm, the microstructure of the probe undergoes reversible stretching/contraction and synchronized changes in transmittance with temperature changes. By adjusting the concentration of HPEI-IBAm and the system pH value, the cloud point (CP) and temperature measurement range of HPEI-IBAm/DIBA can be effectively modulated, with an overall linear range of 21.2–74.0 °C ( R 2 > 0.9900). This dual-signal synchronization mechanism effectively mitigates false-positive interference while enhancing detection accuracy. The sensor combines excellent thermal sensitivity and temperature resolution, delivering reliable responses over a broad temperature range while exhibiting remarkable reversibility and repeatability even after 20 thermal cycles, with relative standard deviations of fluorescence intensity and transmittance as low as 0.7962 % and 0.7109 %, respectively. Notably, the sensor demonstrates outstanding actual environmental temperature monitoring with recovery rates (98.05 %–99.64 %) and accurate skin temperature monitoring with recovery rates of 96.71 %–97.66 %, demonstrating potential for application as wearable flexible sensors.

In recent years, most photosensitizers suffer from poor photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE), vulnerability to aggregated-caused quenching under physiological conditions, and are highly dependent on oxygen, which seriously limit their application in cancer therapy. In this study, DTIR780 was an aggregation induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer, which was synthesized through the originality of molecular engineering. Because DTIR780 had a special organelle targeting lysosomes and mitochondria, it had excellent PCE (PCE = 28.9 %), and could simultaneously generate Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS): O 2 ·- and ·OH and Type II ROS: 1 O 2 , showing significantly enhanced tumor phototoxicity in both normoxia and hypoxic tumor microenvironments. In vivo testing demonstrated that DTIR780 NPs was efficiently accumulated at the tumor site while significantly inhibiting tumor growth in a subcutaneous H22 tumor mouse model. In summary, this lysosome and mitochondria targeted DTIR780 NPs has great potential in clinically image-guided type I photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), offering a novel avenue for developing high-performance type I PDT/PTT photosensitizers for the efficient treatment of hypoxia tumors.

Theranostics for imaging-guided cancer treatment have obtained great attention in recent years for their outstanding capability of both tumor diagnosis and treatment. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets revealed excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, which could be used as photothermal agents. However, MoS 2 nanosheets would often quench or decrease the emission of fluorescence dyes when they were incorporated with these dyes to construct fluorescence-imaging-guided nanotheranostic systems. In this work, MoS 2 nanosheets were embedded into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), and Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE) fluorogen PhENH 2 was chemically modified on the surface of MSNs, which could demonstrate more stable fluorescence emission compared with other MSNs with physically absorbed luminescent molecules. Moreover, folic acid (FA) was also chemically decorated on the nanoparticles to facilitate their targeted bioimaging and photothermal therapy. As expected, the obtained PhENH 2 -MoS 2 -FA MSNs could be efficiently taken up by MDA-MB-231 cells than HepG2 cells, owing to the over-expressed FA receptors on MDA-MB-231 cells. Meanwhile, these MDA-MB-231 cells could be efficiently killed under an 808 nm laser irradiation. These results indicated that the achieved multifunctional MSNs chemically decorated with AIE fluorogens would demonstrate more stable fluorescence for bioimaging-targeted photothermal therapy of MDA-MB-231 cells, which made them promising nanotheranostics for further cancer treatment.

Four D−π−A dyads based on various imidazole derivatives donor and o -carborane acceptor moiety have been designed and synthesized for efficient tunable solid-state fluorescence and low-temperature phosphorescence. The results showed that four dyads are all AIEgens with dual emission properties in solution, highly solid-state emission, and low-temperature phosphorescence. The dual emissions were attributed to the locally excited (LE) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) emission. The crystallographic measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the strong phosphorescence with a long lifetime up to 2.18 s at low temperature may be attributed to the C–H⋅⋅⋅N, C–H⋅⋅⋅π interactions, strong TICT effect and the reduced vibration coupling by attaching a bulky carborane moiety to the chromophore .

Understanding mitochondrial morphology and function is critical for investigating mitochondrial diseases, yet fluorescent probes that label the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) and report dysfunction at high spatiotemporal resolution remain limited. Here, we rationally designed aggregation‐induced emission‐active probes with tunable alkyl chain lengths and carboxyl groups, allowing us to fine‑tune phototoxicity and achieve a controlled, mild level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Two probes, named OTS‐7C and OTS‐12C, enabled super‑resolution imaging of mitochondrial cristae using stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED), while OTS‐12C further supported Hessian‐structured illumination microscopy (Hessian‐SIM) imaging in living cells. Importantly, the controllable ROS output of OTS‑12C supports prolonged time‐lapse imaging of mitochondrial stress responses, including swelling, cristae remodeling, and recovery. We further demonstrated that it could serve as a platform for evaluating antioxidant effectiveness, using Vitamin C and Astaxanthin as model antioxidants. Meanwhile, fluorescence lifetime imaging of OTS‐12C revealed that ROS‐induced oxidation of unsaturated lipids increased its fluorescence lifetime within the IMM, permitting real‐time monitoring of mitochondrial functional states. This work presents a simple yet effective strategy to fine‐tune the phototoxicity of AIE photosensitizers and provides OTS‐12C as a versatile fluorescent probe for high‐resolution visualization of mitochondrial ultrastructure, investigating mitochondrial stress management and evaluating drug antioxidant efficacy in living cells. Regulation of molecular packing, phototoxicity, and ROS output of AIE photosensitizers is achieved through carboxylation and alkyl‐chain‐length tuning. The probe designed via this strategy enables super‐resolution visualization of inner‐mitochondrial‐membrane cristae dynamics under controlled oxidative stress, and fluorescence‐lifetime imaging of mitochondrial functional states.

Stimuli-responsive fluorescent hydrogels, owing to their tunable optical property and unique smart response characteristics, have significant potential in encryption applications and information security. However, most current systems are limited to single-stimulus responsiveness and lack the capability for programmable information erasure or multi-modal dynamic synergy. Hence, we propose a multi-stimuli-responsive phase-change hydrogel incorporating aggregation-induced emission hydrophobic carbon dots (AIE-HCDs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-cellulose network, demonstrating dynamic fluorescence chromism under various external triggers. The hydrogel exhibits solvent-exchange-triggered fluorescence color changes from blue to red, enabled by the concentration modulation of AIE-HCDs through the exchange between PEG and water. Additionally, the temperature-induced phase transition of PEG from crystalline to molten state modulates the aggregation and dispersion of AIE-HCDs, thereby enabling dynamic fluorescence color changes. The phase transition further confers excellent shape-memory behavior and adjustable mechanical properties, with the tensile modulus varying from 6.28 MPa in the molten state to 36.23 MPa in the crystalline state, while maintaining high transparency (∼8% in the molten state). By utilizing microcontact printing and the multi-stimulus response, an encryption platform enables information to be hidden, selectively read under sequential stimuli (thermal, UV, and solvent), and completely erased upon demand. This strategy demonstrates significant potential for advancing high-level information encryption and anti-counterfeiting technologies. Recently, various AIE-based materials with new characteristics and functions have been developing for different fields. Many chiral polymers are attracting the research interests for the new multifunctional materials in biomedicine, chiral recognition, etc. In this work, novel AIE copolymers with chirality activity were successfully fabricated for the first time. Firstly, a new fluorescent monomer (R)-THM with AIE effect and chirality activity was firstly synthesized by Suzuki reaction and enzymatic transesterification reaction. The quantum yield of (R)-THM increased to 0.643 from 0.100 of its substrate TBP with remarkable red-shift of emission spectra , which was consistent with their quantum chemical calculations of HOMO and LUMO situations, and its specific optical rotation [ α ] D 25 °C was about −9.67°. Subsequently, a series of chiral AIE copolymers of PEG-(R)-THM1 and PEG-(R)-THM2 were prepared via RAFT polymerization of (R)-THM and PEGMA with different feeding ratios. Their molecular weights were about 2.0 × 10 4 g/mol with narrow polydispersity index (PDI), and the kinetics analysis presented a pseudo-first-order linear procedure. For the molar 24.2%–32.3% feeding ratio of (R)-THM, the actual fraction of (R)-THM in the copolymers PEG-(R)-THM1 and PEG-(R)-THM2 was respectively about 22.3% and 30.2%, and the [ α ] D 25 °C value of copolymers PEG-(R)-THM1 and PEG-(R)-THM2 was about −2.51° and −3.74°. The amphiphilic structure of the obtained PEG-(R)-THM make them be easily dispersed in water solution and tend to self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with 100–150 nm diameter by TEM , and their maximum emission wavelength presented at 495 nm with obvious AIE effect. Moreover, the PEG-(R)-THM FONs had good biological compatibility, desirable low cytotoxicity and good cells absorption effect, which showed the great potential in bioimaging application.
