A multifunctional surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate Fe 3 O 4 @AgNPs@MIL-101 was prepared. Rapid SERS detection of pesticide residues was realized by direct pre-enrichment and separation on the peel surface. MIL-101 has an ortho-octahedral framework and large pore size, which endowed Fe 3 O 4 @AgNPs@MIL-101 with the ability to rapidly adsorb and separate positively charged targets. The introduction of tannic acid realized the in situ growth of AgNPs on the backbone, to modulate the electromagnetic enhancement. Pesticide molecules were adsorbed onto the surface of AgNPs mediated by central S atoms, accompanied by the interaction between pesticide molecules and AgNPs, the corresponding SERS signals of different pesticides were observed. Together with the introduction of magnetic coating Fe 3 O 4 , the molecules were enriched in the hotspot and separated to further enhance the SERS performance. Magnet instead of centrifugation was used to simultaneously perform surface extraction and sample separation for a noninvasive, rapid, immediate, and portable assay. The method was accomplished in measurement of thiram and thiabendazole on apple and tangerine epidermis, and the limits of detection (LODs) were 20 ng/cm 2 and 4 μg/cm 2 , respectively. The recovery was reasonable, and it showed that the procedure is valuable for the rapid and nondestructive surface analysis of residual chemicals.

p-Cresol is a harmful phenolic substance that can cause serious effects on human health even at a low concentration in water. Therefore, the detection of p-cresol in a water environment is particularly important. In this paper, a novel zeolite imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) material with regular morphology was prepared on the surface of graphene oxide doped with silver nanoparticles. The composite was modified on the glassy carbon electrode surface to increase the specific surface area, accelerate the electron transfer rate, enhance the current response and improve the performance of electrochemical sensors. Furthermore, a layer of p-cresol-molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared on the surface of the modified electrode by electropolymerization for the selective, rapid and sensitive detection of p-cresol, which greatly improved the specific recognition of p-cresol. Under optimal conditions, the prepared sensor had a good linear range of 1.0 × 10−10 M to 1.0 × 10−5 M with a detection limit as low as 5.4 × 10−11 M, and it presented excellent reproducibility, stability and selectivity. Moreover, the sensor was successfully applied for the detection of trace p-cresol in a real water environment, providing a reliable assay for sensitive, rapid and selective detection of p-cresol in complex samples.

Transformation of epithelial to mesenchymal (EMT) is an important event in the process of tumor initiation, invasion and metastasis. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are one kind of important markers in the field of liquid tumor biopsy, whose number and phenotype represent the occurrence and progression of tumors. Therefore, it is our interest to investigate the epithelial mesenchymal transition process occurring on the surface of CTCs. Herein in this work, two proteins of E-cadherin (E-cad) and N-cadherin (N-cad) were selected as representative proteins of EMT process. To achieve simultaneous analysis of E-cad and N-cad on the surface of rare CTCs, we designed a duplex and portable immunosensor using AuNPs and AgNPs as nanolabels to amplify the immunoreaction signals. The dual channel immunosensor not only exhibited good electrochemical responses for recombinant E-cad and N-cad as low as 0.1 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively, but also showed good linear correlations with different numbers of phenotypic CTCs (10–500 cells/10 μL). The above strategy was further employed to inspect the occurrence of EMT on CTCs surface, which displayed a high consistence with other molecular biological characterizations. Finally, this immunoassay was successfully applied to inspect the correlations of numbers, phenotype of CTCs, as well as E-cad and N-cad expressions on these CTCs in bloods of NSCLC patients with disease stage.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI MSI) is a powerful tool for the characterization and localization of analytes without the need for extraction, purification, separation or labeling of samples. However, in tissue sections the most abundant lipids, phosphatidylcholines (PCs), could suppress the signals of other classes of coexisting lipids. In this work, polydopamine (PDA)-capped AgNPs (AgNPs@PDA) were synthesized as a matrix of MALDI MSI to analyze lipids in both positive and negative ion modes. By adjusting the thickness of the PDA layer, the signal of silver cluster ions of AgNPs@PDA was effectively controlled, and the ability of AgNPs@PDA serving as a matrix was optimized. More interestingly, using AgNPs@PDA as a matrix, the sensitivity of PCs was dramatically decreased, and the PC signals were greatly suppressed, while for other lipids (including PE, HexCer, PS, PI, PIP, and ST), they were just the opposite. The reason, we believe, is related to the positively charged surface of AgNPs@PDA, and the polyhydroxy and amino groups of PDA. Benefitting from the suppression of the signals of PCs and the improvement of detection sensitivity of other lipids, 58 glycerophospholipids and 25 sphingolipids in brain tissue sections could be imaged in one run with AgNPs@PDA as a matrix by MALDI MSI, much better than when using traditional organic matrices 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and 9-aminoacridine.

The preparation of hydrogel wound dressing materials with high antibacterial activities and good biosafety simultaneously can be relatively challenging. Aiming at solving this crucial problem, a multi-functional chitosan/carboxymethyl chitosan/silver nanoparticles (CTS/CMCTS/AgNPs) polyelectrolyte composite physical hydrogel is constructed by in situ photoreduction of silver ions with α-hydroxy of CMCTS and semi-dissolution acidification sol-gel transition (SD-A-SGT) methods using natural polymers with no chemical reductant involved. The XRD , TEM and IR characterizations reveal a highly uniform structure of the composite hydrogel with good mechanical strength . The composite hydrogel also exhibits good self-healing ability, and the self-healing mechanism of the composite hydrogel prepared by natural polymers with high similarity is put forward on the basis of molecular dynamics simulation. The AgNPs gives the hydrogel excellent antibacterial activities against both S. aureus and P. aeruginosa ., while the preparation method with no chemical reductant and crosslinking agent required endows the hydrogel high biocompatibility. The great application potentials of CTS/CMCTS/AgNPs polyelectrolyte composite hydrogel are demonstrated with its promoting effects on the healing of P. aeruginosa infected wounds as the wound dressing. It is a breakthrough in achieving hydrogels with desired biosafety and antibacterial activities simultaneously. The composite hydrogel is found with great application potentials as wound dressing.

Olaquindox (OLA) in food from its illegal use possesses great harmful effects on humans, making it important to develop sensitive, inexpensive, and convenient methods for OLA detection. This study innovatively presented a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on the synergistic effects of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots ( N -GQDs) and a nickel-based metal–organic framework functionalized with silver nanoparticles (Ag/Ni-MOF) for OLA detection. N -GQDs and Ag/Ni-MOF with unique honeycomb structures were sequentially modified on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface to accelerate the electron transfer rate and increase the available region of the electrode. Molecularly imprinted polymers were further grown on the Ag/Ni-MOF/ N -GQDs/GCE by electropolymerization to significantly enhance the selective recognition of OLA. The constructed sensor showed excellent performance for selective OLA determination, with a wide linear range (5–600 nmol·L -1 ) and exceedingly low detection limit (2.2 nmol·L -1 ). The sensor was successfully applied to detect OLA in animal-origin food with satisfactory recoveries (96.22–101.02%).

Ag + and SCN − play extremely important roles in the fields of the physiology and environment. In this work, on the basis of phenanthro[9,10- d ]imidazole derivative ( DIPIP ) which can exhibit the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in aqueous solution, we achieved a sequential on-off-on switch for Ag + and SCN − with high selectivity and sensitivity. A remarkable fluorescence quenching effect of Ag + on the probe DIPIP was observed with 1:2 stoichiometry , Subsequently, the fluorescence intensity of in situ generated DIPIP -Ag + ensemble was easily switched on after the interaction between Ag + and SCN − , which was attributed to the stronger affinity of SCN − to capture Ag + . In particular, the extreme limits of detection (LOD) for Ag + and SCN − in standard solutions were as low as to be 74.5 nM and 7.8 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the probe DIPIP and the DIPIP -Ag + ensemble could be used to detect Ag + in the real water and SCN − in smoker saliva samples, respectively. In addition, the sequential “on-off-on” fluorescence mode of DIPIP to Ag + and SCN − were also successfully applied in living HeLa cells.

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag–O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to detect Fe(II) and Fe(III) simultaneously. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD enhanced electrode performances because of the synergistic effect between N-CQDs, AgNPs and β-CD. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) released from four iron supplementations in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

A β-lactoglobulin amyloid fibrils-poly(vinyl alcohol)-Ag nanoparticles (β-LAFs-PVA-AgNPs) hydrogel was prepared as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with adsorbent β-lactoglobulin amyloid fibrils (β-LAFs) structured into the network structure of the hydrogel using the immersion reduction method. Due to the high swelling and contraction properties of the hydrogel in different states and the “sieving” nature of its network cavities, small molecular target analytes can more easily enter the space-confined hydrogel and rapidly bind with the amide bonds of the protein structure. During the contraction process of the hydrogel, the target analytes are enriched, and the Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) come closer together to form Raman “hot spots”, generating stronger SERS signals. The SERS performance of this hydrogel was evaluated using thiram and ibuprofen as target molecules. The results showed high detection sensitivity with limits of 37.1 μg/L for thiram and 85.6 μg/L for ibuprofen, respectively, and the entire sample pretreatment and detection process is completed within 11 min. The substrate also demonstrated excellent selectivity, uniformity, stability, and reproducibility. When applied to detect thiram in fruits and vegetables and ibuprofen in herbal tea, the recovery rates ranged from 90.1% to 114.7%, with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.61% to 5.8%. The SERS results matched those from HPLC analysis. This method offers simple and rapid sample pretreatment, high sensitivity, strong adsorption capacity for organic pollutants, and good selectivity, making it a promising candidate for on-site rapid detection applications.

Abstract A new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) cytosensor is proposed for the simultaneous determination of phosphatidylserine (PS) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) based on the ECL signals of metal-organic framework-5 (MOF-5) loaded CdS quantum dots and N-(aminobutyl)-N-(ethylisoluminol)-polyethylenimine capped Au and Ag nanoparticles. Apoptosis promotes the exposure of PS and reduces the expression of EGFR in cell membranes. Two spatially resolved areas on dual-disk glassy carbon electrodes were designed to eliminate the interference from different ECL probes. Using HepG2 cells treated with resveratrol to induce apoptosis, the cytosensor exhibited high sensitivity, simplicity, and high reproducibility, demonstrating its potential in drug screening and rapid apoptotic cell detection. The strategy reported provides a promising platform for the highly sensitive cytosensing and convenient screening of clinically relevant anticancer drugs. Graphical Abstract

As an ideal alternative to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS) has similar biotoxicity, teratogenicity , carcinogenicity and mutagenicity as BPA. Nevertheless, to date, a fast, sensitive and portable method for meeting on-site measurement of BPS had not been established. Hence, it was particularly urged to develop a fast and highly sensitive method for tracing BPS. Currently, a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) electrochemical sensor had been successfully fabricated for the detection of BPS, wherein the composite of three-doped carbon quantum dots (B, N, F-CQDs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were utilized as an electron conducting layer, and MIP was applied as recognition element of target molecules. The step-by-step fabrication process and the adsorption capacity of the modified electrode were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronocoulometry (CC). The results indicated that the synergy between B, N, F-CQDs and AgNPs dramatically improved the sensitivity of the electrode and achieved the amplification of the electrical signal. Meanwhile, the electrochemical activities of BPS were explored by CV and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). And, the various parameters relating to the electrochemical kinetic properties of BPS were calculated. To the best of our knowledge, this was rarely reported in peer journals. The MIP remarkably improved the selectivity of the sensor owing to the specific recognition of the imprinted cavities. The linear response range of the new sensor was 1 × 10 −8 M to 5 × 10 −5 M with a detection limit of 1.12 × 10 −8 M and the electrode designed in this paper could meet the requirement of trace-level measurement of BPS in biological and environmental samples. Additionally, the sensor was used to determine BPS in plastic products with good anti-interference and acceptable recovery.
