As we know, in plasmonic-enhanced heterogeneous catalysis, the reaction rates could be remarkably accelerated by generating hot carriers in the constituent nanostructured metals. To further improve the reaction rate, well-defined heterostructures based on plasmonic gold nanoparticles on MXene Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (Au NPs@Ti3C2Tx) were rationally designed and systematically investigated to improve the performance of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The results demonstrated that the catalysis performance of the Au NPs@Ti3C2Tx system could be easily tuned by simply varying the concentration and size of Au NPs, and Au NPs@Ti3C2Tx with an average Au NP diameter (∼10 nm) exhibited a 2.5-fold increase in the oxidation or reduction current compared with pure Ti3C2Tx. The enhanced OER performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the plasmonic hot hole injection and Schottky junction carrier trapping. Owing to easy fabrication of Au NPs@Ti3C2Tx, the tunable size and concentration of Au NPs loaded on MXene nanosheets, and the significantly enhanced OER, it is expected that this work can lay the foundation to the design of multidimensional MXene-based heterostructures for highly efficient OER performance.

Inefficient electrocatalysts and high-power consumption are two thorny problems for electrochemical hydrogen (H 2 ) production from acidic water electrolysis. Herein we report the one-pot precise synthesis of ultrafine Au core-PtAu alloy shell nanowires (Au@Pt x Au UFNWs). Among them, Au@Pt 0.077 Au UFNWs exhibit the best performance for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which only require applied potentials of 0.29 V and −22.6 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. The corresponding formic acid electrolyzer realizes the electrochemical H 2 production at a voltage of only 0.51 V with 10 mA cm −2 current density. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Au-riched PtAu alloy structure can facilitates the direct oxidation pathway of FAOR and consequently elevates the FAOR activity of Au@Pt 0.077 Au UFNWs. This work provides meaningful insights into the electrochemical H 2 production from both the construction of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts and the replacement of OER.

This paper introduces an approach to synthesize bimetallic nanoparticles under an alternating temperature field in aqueous solution. During the synthesis, pyro-catalytic barium titanate is used as the substrate to reduce the metallic ions dispersed in the solution due to the generated charges at the surface of pyro-materials under temperature oscillation. Chloroauric acid and potassium tetrachloroplatinate are used as precursors to produce gold/platinum bimetallic nanoparticles through a pyro-catalytic process. Transmission electron microscopy characterization, in combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping, demonstrates that the bimetallic nanoparticle is composed of an Au core and Au/Pt alloy shell structure. Compared to the conventional approaches, the pyroelectric synthesis approach demonstrated in this work requires no toxic reducing agents and waste heat can be used as a thermal energy source in the synthesis. Hence, it offers a potential “green” synthetic method for bimetallic nanoparticles.

The design and development of novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems with near-infrared (NIR) emission beyond 800 nm are promising for ECL evolution, especially for improving the throughput of the spectrum-resolved multiplexing ECL assay and biological imaging. Herein a biocompatible and environmentally friendly luminophore, that is, the methionine-stabilized Au nanoclusters (Met-Au NCs), are proposed to achieve efficient aqueous ECL of ∼835 nm with triethanolamine as coreactant. The Met-Au NCs not only demonstrate a 75 times enhanced ECL compared with the traditional Au NCs with bovine serum albumin as a capping agent but also can be employed as ECL tags to label proteins with a methionine linker and enable a highly sensitive NIR ECL bioassay. A sandwich-type NIR ECL immunosensor is constructed with the Met-Au NCs as tags and α-fetoprotein (AFP) as a model analyte and exhibits a wide linearity range from 3 fg·mL–1 to 0.1 ng·mL–1 with a limit of detection of 1 fg mL–1 (S/N = 3) as well as desired selectivity.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely investigated in recent years. The subtle design and synthesis of SERS substrates, including the semiconductor–metal composites, are the key but difficult points. To date, only the short-lived semiconductors are involved, and no research has been conducted concerning the long-lived ones although the persistent luminescence semiconductors have great potential of charge transfer in relatively long durations. Herein, we present a concept of afterglow-assistant SERS (AASERS) on the long-lived gold shell-capped Cr3+-doped ZnGa2O4 (CZGO@Au) substrate. The normal SERS, AASERS acquired immediately after 2 min illuminating of a 633 nm laser, AA-1 min SERS acquired 1 min after 2 min illuminating of a 633 nm of the typical analytes on CZGO@Au, ZnGa2O4@Au (ZGO@Au), and gold nanostars (GNSs) with the same UV–vis absorption wavelength are systematically compared. The CZGO@Au owns the SERS signals that are 1.8 times of ZGO@Au and 3.4 times of GNSs. A higher AASERS than the corresponding SERS (1.65 times) is only observed on CZGO@Au, and the AASERS on CZGO@Au is 2.8 times of that on ZGO@Au and 5.2 times of that on GNSs. Because of the afterglow decay of CZGO@Au, the AA-1 min SERS on CZGO@Au returns to its SERS. These data demonstrate that the AASERS on long-lived substrates is a promising way for further enhancing SERS signals just by laser illuminating the substrates, and thus affords alternatives for reducing the difficulties in the complicated synthesis of the exquisite substrates. The AASERS mechanism and the application of CZGO@Au in SERS imaging of living U87MG cells are also discussed.

Although efforts have been devoted to develop new antibacterial agents and techniques, the challenge of bacterial infection remains unresolved and is even increasing. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) driven by ultrasound (US) has demonstrated effectiveness in terms of penetration and it can help to clinically address the problem of deep tissue bacterial infection. In recent years, a variety of sonosensitizers, which were originally designed for photodynamic therapy, have been adopted for SDT. Yet, their unstable chemical stability and ineffective electron–hole separation are not favorable for clinical applications. Hence, we designed a new type of antibacterial sonosensitizer—namely, Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes—in which an interfacial Schottky junction was built between a p-type semiconductor Cu2O and a noble metal Au. When US stimulation was applied, the electrons from Cu2O could be excited at the junction and transferred to Au. Since the formed Schottky barrier could block the backflow of US-excited electrons, a prolonged electron–hole separation can be successfully established. Additionally, because of the boosted sonocatalytic activity, the Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes could produce a large amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are subject to US stimulation. Furthermore, we found that the sonocatalytic activity of the Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes could be reinforced by increasing the amount of Au, enabling 99.67% of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) to be killed by US stimulation for 15 minutes. The cytocompatibility of Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes was improved by a red blood cell membrane (RBC) coating over the surface, and the membrane did not sacrifice its superior antibacterial properties.

The fabrication of flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high sensitivity and signal consistency in a simple and low-cost way have been a crucial and urgent challenge. In this study, we demonstrated a flexible transparent three-dimensional (3D) ordered micro-hemisphere (MHS) array PDMS film with self-assembled Au nanoparticles (NPs) (an Au NP-MHS array film) as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform for the in situ detection of pesticides in food. According to the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation results, the Au NP-MHS array film possesses high-density and ordered “hot spots” to enhance the electromagnetic field (EMF), so that the sensitivity and signal consistency are effectively improved. The optimized Au NP-MHS array film exhibits fascinating SERS sensitivity, with a limitation of crystal violet (CV) reaching 10−12 M as well as excellent consistency (RSD = 4.89% at 10−8 M). For in situ pesticide detection in fruits, this flexible film was pasted on the surfaces of tomatoes. The carbendazol and parathion were directly detected, and distinctly identified even at a low concentration (10−8 M). The flexible Au NP-MHS array film could be a potential candidate for the SERS substrate applied in the rapid and true inspection.

A simple and facile method is described for the in situ synthesis of graphene oxide-Ag nanoplates (GO-AgNPs) hybrid structure and then served as sacrificial templates for producing graphene oxide-Au nanorings (GO-AuNRs) by galvanic replacement taken place on the GO surface. The catalytic activity of the resulting hybrid nanomaterial has been investigated for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ). The results showed that the rate constant of GO-AuNRs nanomaterials was 0.205 min − 1 and the samples showed significant enhancement in catalytic activity.

A novel enhanced photoelectrochemical DNA sensor, based on a TiO 2 /Au hybrid electrode structure , was developed to detect target DNA. The sensor was developed by successively modifying fluorine-tin oxide (FTO) electrodes with TiO 2 nanoparticles , gold (Au) nanoparticles, hairpin DNA (DNA1), and CdSe-COOH quantum dots (QDs), which acted as signal amplification factors . In the absence of target DNA, the incubated DNA1 hairpin and the CdSe-COOH QDs were in close contact with the TiO 2 /Au electrode surface , leading to an enhanced photocurrent intensity due to the sensitization effect. After incubation of the modified electrode with the target DNA, the hairpin DNA changed into a double helix structure, and the CdSe QDs moved away from the TiO 2 /Au electrode surface, leading to a decreased sensitization effect and photoelectrochemical signal intensity. This novel DNA sensor exhibited stable, sensitive and reproducible detection of DNA from 0.1 μM to 10 fM, with a lower detection limit of 3 fM. It provided good specificity, reproducibility, stability and is a promising strategy for the detection of a variety of other DNA targets, for early clinical diagnosis of various diseases.

Au nanoparticles/mesoporous CuO nanosheets were successfully synthesized by the assembly of negatively charged AuCl4−1 and positively charged CuO nanosheets using sodium citrate and thermal reduction, respectively. The structure and morphology were characterized in detail. Both the loading amount of Au nanoparticles and the performance were controlled by the reduction process. The resulting Au/CuO NSs exhibited good catalytic activity for CO oxidation and good non-enzymatic sensitivity for glucose.

One-dimension noble nanomaterials have promising applications in many fields, and their growth pattern control is significant to property modulation. Herein, we report a facile strategy with which the growth pattern of Ag on the Au nanorod (NR) or decahedral nanoparticle (NP) surface can be precisely controlled and various structured Ag/Au NRs can be synthesized. Achievement of growth pattern control is mainly attributed to the adjustable reaction kinetics of Ag– to Ag0. Slow and moderate reaction rate favor asymmetrical growth, producing Au-tipped Ag NRs and asymmetrical Ag–Au–Ag NRs, respectively. In the case of a fast reaction rate, symmetrical growth dominates and symmetrical Ag–Au–Ag NRs form. Furthermore, the prepared bimetallic NRs can be used as starting materials to generate other novel nanostructures (nanocups, nanonails, and longer Au-tipped Ag NRs). The result presented here is vital to both exploration of growth theory and constructing nanostructures of not only the Au/Ag bimetallic system but also possibly other noble bimetallic systems. Moreover, these prepared nanostructures could provide model materials for studying the physical properties (such as structure-dependent surface plasmon) or have potential applications in the medical field. For example, hollow nanocups can serve as containers for controlled release of drug, etc.

Gold-coated magnetic core@shell nanoparticles , which exhibit magneto-optical properties, not only enhance the chemical stability of core and biocompatibility of surface, but also provide a combination of multimodal imaging and therapeutics. The conjugation of these tiny nanoparticles with specific biomolecules allows researchers to target the desired location. In this paper, superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles were synthesized and functionalized with the azide group on the surface by formation of self-assembled monolayers. Folate (FA) molecules, non-immunogenic target ligands for cancer cells, are conjugated with alkyne and then immobilized on the azide-terminated Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles through copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (click reaction). Myelogenous leukemia K562 cells were used as a folate receptor (FR) model, which can be targeted and extracted by magnetic field after interaction with the Fe 3 O 4 @Au–FA nanoparticles.
