Photocatalytic dissolution represents a promising alternative to conventional, highly toxic, and energy-intensive palladium (Pd) recovery technologies. However, achieving efficient recovery under visible-light illumination in aqueous solution remains a challenge. Herein, we constructed a visible-light-responsive heterojunction photocatalyst by in-situ growing BiOBr nanosheets on nanostructured g-C 3 N 4 . Under simulated sunlight irradiation (AM 1.5G, 100 mW/cm 2 ), the optimized BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 achieved 88 % Pd dissolution from waste palladium/carbon catalyst (w-Pd/C) within 3 h, outperforming single-component catalysts. Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis revealed that efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers at the heterojunction interface generated abundant reactive species. The photogenerated e − reacted with O 2 to produce •O 2 − , while h + reacted with H 2 O to generate •OH. Simultaneously, Br − was oxidized by h + and •O 2 − to form bromine radicals (•Br), which then combined to form Br 2 . These reactive species (•O 2 − , •OH, and Br 2 ) accumulated on the w-Pd/C surface and collectively promoted the oxidative dissolution of Pd. This study highlights the potential of combining heterojunction engineering with halogen coordination in sustainable metal recovery, providing novel insights and technical support for the green recovery of precious metals, with significant implications for environmental protection and resource cycling.

Bismuth oxybromide/molybdenum disulfide/graphene oxide (BiOBr/MoS 2 /GO) heterojunction composites were fabricated to modulate the adsorption ability and photocatalytic degradation performance toward oxytetracycline (OTC). The flowerlike BiOBr/MoS 2 /GO composites demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activies for the OTC degradation. Specifically, OTC, tetracycline, chlorotetracycline, and doxycycline were simultaneously removed with degradation rates higher than 98% under visible light irradiation within 40 min. Radical trapping experiments indicated that photogenerated holes (h + ), hydroxyl radicals ( OH), and superoxide radicals ( O 2− ) played crucial roles in photocatalytic OTC degradation. Further, Possible transformation pathway and photocatalytic mechanism were proposed by investigating the intermediates in OTC degradation process.

Single-atom catalysts have drawn tremendous attention on account of their high activity, selectivity and stability. Z-scheme heterojunctions can effectively improve the utilization of optical energy due to the enhanced separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. In this work, several catalysts associated with single-atom Fe (FeSA) loaded on Z-scheme heterojunction WO 3 /BiOBr were prepared; their structure, morphology and photoelectric properties were analyzed; their photocatalytic degradation performance of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) was investigated; and the effects of initial pH, initial CIP concentration, catalyst dosage, light intensity , inorganic anions and humic acid on CIP removal rate were examined. Relevant results showed that the percentage of CIP removal by FeSA/WO 3 /BiOBr could reach 98.5% (120 min); the optimal conditions were pH= 9, [CIP] 0 = 10 mg/L, [FeSA] 0 = 0.8 g/L and I light = 500 W (100% degradation rate within 30 min);·O 2 - and h + were the key active species. Results of the cyclic experiments suggested good stability of the catalyst. Furthermore, the mechanism of CIP photocatalytic degradation was proposed to be a synergistic mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunction migration and valence cycling between single-atom Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ . Finally, the products and pathways of CIP degradation were analyzed.

The design and construction of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor with excellent photoelectric properties and good photoelectrocatalysis activity is significant for the effective detection of analytes. In this paper, based on a two-step anodic oxidation method and successive ionic layer adsorption (SILAR) method, a TiO2 nanotube array (TNT) photoelectrochemical sensor modified with BiOBr nanosheets was constructed and applied for the detection of H2O2 for the first time. The photocurrent of the photoelectrochemical sensor increases with the increase of the H2O2 concentration under the irradiation of an 8 W UV lamp. Excellent linearity was obtained in the concentration range from 10 nM to 100 μM with a low detection limit of 5 nM (S/N = 3). This excellent photoelectrochemical performance is due to the formation of a p–n heterojunction between BiOBr and TiO2 nanotube arrays, which provides efficient separation of charge carriers and accelerates electron transport. Moreover, it is applied to detect H2O2 in milk samples and it showed a good recovery result ranging from 95.73% to 105.65%, which provides a promising new strategy for the detection of H2O2.

Cefazolin (CFZ) is widely present in the wastewater treatment effluents and in receiving waters and has caused severe impacts to the ecosystem. CFZ degradation by photocatalysis has attracted increasing attention due to its eco-friendly features. Herein, we presented a green synthesis strategy for a highly active BiOBr photocatalyst for CFZ removal with L -cysteine as a directing agent, and the role of thiol in cysteine for facets control and morphology regulation was discussed. We found that the photoactivity of cysteine-induced BiOBr nanosheet was much higher than those prepared by using arginine and glycine as directing agent. Further experiments showed that the cysteine preferentially coordinated Bi 3+ with thiol rather than carboxyl. The strong interactions of thiol group with the external surface of the BiOBr crystals stabilize the small crystals that have high surface energy without the cysteine. Such a chemical environment favors forming BiOBr crystalline with small size of high surface area and oriented growth in [110] direction, which facilitates the photogenerated electron-hole separation to achieve significantly promoted photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the cysteine-directed BiOBr nanosheets displayed good photoreactivity to more pollutants (i.e. rhodamine B, cefradine and cefoperazone sodium) and excellent reusability as verified via seven consecutive recycle experiments. The proper photocatalyst dosage (0.4 g/L), relatively acidic water environment (pH 3.4) and high temperature (35 °C) would be beneficial to CFZ photodegrdation by BiOBr. Also, the CFZ photodegradation mechanism and degradation pathway were also proposed by combining radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) test with LC-MS analysis in the photocatalytic process.

In photoelectrochemical sensor (PEC sensor), sensitivity and selectivity are two essential factors which are determined by photosensitive of materials and identification of elements. Herein, a novel PEC aptamer sensor for streptomycin-specific detection was developed, with which the visible-light-active TiO 2 /BiOI/BiOBr heterostructure and aptamers were employed as photoactive material and bio-identification elements, separately. The combination of an appropriate amount of TiO 2 with BiOI/BiOBr enhanced the photocurrent response, and thus is beneficial to the construction of PEC sensors. In addition, the one-pot synthesis of TiO 2 /BiOI/BiOBr has the advantage of being environmentally-friendly. Under optimized conditions, the photocurrent response of aptamer/TiO 2 /BiOI/BiOBr/ITO is linear with SRT concentration from 0.05 to 150 nM, and the detection limit (S/N = 3) is as low as 0.04 nM. This novel PEC sensing strategy provided an ultra-sensitive sensor with high selectivity and stability for SRT detection.

In this work, we have adopted a coprecipitation method to synthesize BiOBr nanoplates with diameter of 150–450 nm and thickness of 40–80 nm, and then created Bi nanowires (diameter: 6 nm) on their surface through a NaBH4 reduction method. Evolution of Bi nanowires was systematically investigated by varying the concentration of NaBH4 solution and reaction time. It is demonstrated that with increasing the NaBH4 concentration (2 h reaction), Bi nanowires are gradually evolved from BiOBr crystals, and in particular treatment by 110 mM NaBH4 solution leads to the complete evolution of BiOBr nanoplates to Bi nanowires. At a low-concentration NaBH4 solution (30 mM), BiOBr crystals are partially reduced to Bi nanowires with increasing reaction time, and then the Bi nanowires are recrystallized into BiOBr nanowires/nanoparticles on the surface of BiOBr nanoplates. At a high-concentration NaBH4 solution (110 mM), BiOBr nanoplates are easily reduced to Bi nanowires with a short reaction time, and further prolonging the reaction time leads to the gradual transformation of Bi nanowires into Bi4O5Br2 nanoparticles/nanowires. Photocatalytic performances of the samples were evaluated by eliminating rhodamine B from aqueous solution under simulated sunlight illumination. It is demonstrated that the creation of Bi nanowires (an appropriate content) on the surface of BiOBr nanoplates can produce excellent Bi@BiOBr composite photocatalysts with enhanced photodegradation performances. The underlying enhanced photocatalytic mechanism was investigated and discussed.

Sunlight-driven activation of molecular oxygen (O 2 ) for organic oxidation reactions offers an appealing strategy to cut down the reliance on fossil fuels in chemical industry, yet it remains a great challenge to simultaneously tailor the charge kinetics and promote reactant chemisorption on semiconductor catalysts for enhanced photocatalytic performance. Herein, we report iron sites immobilized on defective BiOBr nanosheets as an efficient and selective photocatalyst for activation of O 2 to singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). These Fe 3+ species anchored by oxygen vacancies can not only facilitate the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carrier, but also serve as active sites for effective adsorption of O 2 . Moreover, low-temperature phosphorescence spectra combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra under illumination reveal that the Fe species can boost the quantum yield of excited triplet state and accelerate the energy transfer from excited triplet state to adsorbed O 2 via a chemical loop of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , thereby achieving highly efficient and selective generation of 1 O 2 . As a result, the versatile iron sites on defective BiOBr nanosheets contributes to near-unity conversion rate and selectivity in both aerobic oxidative coupling of amines to imines and sulfoxidation of organic sulfides. This work highlights the significant role of metal sites anchored on semiconductors in regulating the charge/energy transfer during the heterogeneous photocatalytic process, and provides a new angle for designing high-performance photocatalysts.

The photodegradation of pollutants is a significant and friendly technology to protect the environment. The fabrication of hierarchical heterojunction is the efficient method to improve the photocatalytic performance. Herein, the hierarchical type-II BiOBr@ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction is fabricated successfully via a simple chemistry method. The optimal sample BS170 (the volume of 170 mL ethylene glycol) exhibits the higher photodegradation under the visible light and presents 2.3 times higher than that of pure BiOBr for degradation of MO and the mass of BS170 is the half of BiOBr could achieve the same photocatalytic effect as BiOBr for the photodegradation of RhB. The results indicate the fabric of heterojunction could enhance the absorption capacity of visible light and separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs to increase the photodegradation. Therefore, this work provides the novel strategy for fabricating the hierarchical type-II heterojunction photocatalyst for the degradation of dyes.

Private information protection of electronic chips which store large amounts of sensitive data, is a crucial issue in electromechanical systems nowadays. Here, a self-destructive microchip based on an instantaneous thermite reaction is designed to prevent the leakage of electronic information. The device is consisted of a silicon test wafer and an upper energetic film coated by a simple drop-casting technique. A series of Al/BiOX-based nanothermites have been prepared for decreasing the reaction sensitivity, meanwhile optimizing the destruction efficiency of the energetic film system. Among them, Al/Bi 2 O 3 nanothermite containing 30 wt% BiOBr possesses a low sensitivity (45 J), the maximum pressure peak (1.93 MPa) and pressure effect duration due to multiple interactions of the three nano-scale energetic components. Besides, the energetic film prepared by this nanothermite fomula also exhibits a more effective destruction of the device. The high-speed photography results demonstrate that the violent reaction shatters the thick energetic microchip (∼1 mm) within merely 0.5 ms. Importantly, the efficient destruction of energetic microchips shows excellent reproducibility in different working scenes, including Air or Ar atmosphere. It is believed that this self-destructive device with environmentally friendly components and simple but adaptive design can be extensively used in various electric microcomponents.

The photocatalytic oxygen evolution of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) is greatly hindered by its low visible-light response and high electron–hole recombination. Nonmetal doping can effectively alleviate these issues, leading to improvement in photocatalytic performance. Herein, Bi2Te3 was introduced as both the Te doping source and the morphology-control template to improve the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr. Appropriate amounts of Te are critical to maintain the ultrathin plate-like structure of BiOBr, whereas excessive Te results in the formation of a flower-like architecture. Oxygen evolution activity disclosed that a plate-like structure is essential for realizing higher performance owing to sufficient light utilization and efficient charge separation. An optimal oxygen evolution rate of 368.0 μmol h–1 g–1 was achieved for the Te-doped sample, which is 2.3-fold as that of the undoped BiOBr (158.9 μmol h–1 g–1). Theoretical calculations demonstrated that Te doping can induce impurity levels above the valence band of BiOBr, which slightly narrowed the band gap and strengthened the light absorption in the range of 400–800 nm. More importantly, Te dopants could act as shallow traps for confining the excited electrons, thus prolonging the carrier lifetime. This work provides a novel strategy to prepare highly efficient photocatalysts by simultaneously realizing morphology manipulation and nonmetal doping.

A series of flower-like BiOCl x Br 1-x (x = 0∼1) with different Cl − doping contents were prepared via a simple co-precipitation method. Experimental results show that BiOCl 0.2 Br 0.8 (20 mg) can decompose tetracycline hydrochloride (20 mg/L) of ∼100% within 30 min, which is far higher than those of the previously reported BiOCl and BiOBr. Microstructural and spectroscopic characterization demonstrates that Cl − doping can effectively change the growth orientation of the layered BiOCl x Br 1-x nanosheets to expose more (102) active surfaces. Density of states calculations and radical trapping experiments reveal that strong coupling between the electronic states of multi-anions adjusts the band structure, which improves light absorption and generation of main active species ⋅O 2 − . Meanwhile, strong polarization caused by anionic doping also promotes separation and migration of the photogenerated carriers to different positions of the active surface. As a result, the photocatalytic activities are improved largely and optimal in BiOCl 0.2 Br 0.8 .
