Hollow-Co3O4@CoP/NS-RGO Heterojunction Structure Derived from ZIF-67 Promotes Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Bifunctional Catalysis

Bin Liu,Songlin Xue,Shifeng Tan,Duxin Zhang,Zhao Deng,Hongfei Pan,Wenmao Tu,Ruiming Zhang,Haining Zhang,Yadong Wang

In this work, a two-step calcination method to fabricate Co3O4@CoP hollow nanoparticles embedded in N, S-co-doped reduced graphene oxide substrates is reported. The electrocatalyst is synthesized through a hydrothermal-calcination method of adding graphene oxide using ZIF-67 as a template followed by an annealing process in the presence of NaH2PO4·H2O. In the designed electrocatalyst, the formed hollow nanoparticles had an average diameter of 100 nm. The synthesized electrocatalyst displays a hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential of 54 mV at 10 mA cm–2 current density in 0.5 mol L–1 H2SO4 solution at room temperature, comparable to Pt/C catalysts. The oxygen evolution reaction overpotential in 1 mol L–1 KOH electrolyte is 288 mV, which is almost equivalent to that of IrO2. Stated thus, the as-prepared composite catalysts are promising candidates for bifunctional catalysts for water splitting technology, relieving the limitation of commercial catalysts caused by their single catalytic performance.

Peroxymonosulfate activation via CoP nanoparticles confined in nitrogen-doped porous carbon for enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole in wastewater with high salinity

Xintao Fu,Yan Lin,Chunping Yang,Shaohua Wu,Yue Wang,Xiang Li

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have been considered a promising candidate for heterogeneous catalysis in wastewater treatment , while the feasibility of its application in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes systems for the treatment of high-salinity organic wastewater remains still unclear. In this study, catalysts of cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles confined in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (CoP/NC) were prepared using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a template via calcination-oxidation-phosphorization, which were subsequently applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in the water with high-salinity concentrations. Results showed that the degrading performance of CoP/NC could be improved and regulated by phosphorus (P) doping amount with an optimum of 5.0% (CoP/NC-5), which reached 100% of SMX degradation. Meanwhile, CoP/NC-5 catalyst could tolerate wide pH variations (5–9). More importantly, the CoP/NC-5/PMS system showed high adaptability to various concentrations of inorganic salt, even up to 500 mM. In addition, active species of sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were identified, which played dominant roles in the destruction of SMX, and the production amount of SO 4 •− was quantified. This work confirmed that transition-metal phosphides nanoparticles confined in nitrogen-doped porous carbon were a promising catalyst for SMX elimination in high saline wastewater.

ZIF-67@POM hybrid-derived unique willow-shaped two-dimensional Mo-CoP nanostructures as efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Yao Tang,Zijun Zou,Xingen Wu,Pengfei Zuo,Lei Wang,Guiwen Huang,Jia Zhu,Shengliang Zhong

Designing highly efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts to facilitate overall water decomposition is critical and highly desirable, but still challenging. In this study, we synthesized ZIF-67@POM nanomaterials by doping H3PMo12O40 in ZIF-67. The molybdenum-doped carbon matrix can effectively reduce CoP agglomeration, which is conducive to improving the specific surface area and active sites of the catalyst. The doping of Mo also optimizes the electronic structure of Mo-CoP-100 and improves its electrocatalytic activity. Compared with CoP derived from pristine ZIF-67, the optimal Mo-CoP-100 exhibits significantly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity with an almost constant overpotential of 290 mV to maintain a stable current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media for at least 100 h. Furthermore, compared with traditional precious metal-free OER electrocatalysts, the Mo-CoP catalysts prepared in this work have high specific surface area, rich surface-active sites, good cycling stability and high diffusion efficiency.

Highly Catalytic CoP@N, P-Codoped Porous Carbon Synthesized by a Supramolecular Gel and Salt Template Method for Li–S Batteries

Zhenpu Shi,Juhong Xu,Yujiao Wang,Yudong Pang,Wanli Zhao,Hongyun Yue,Zongxian Yang,Shu-Ting Yang,Yanhong Yin

Lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling effect is the main problem to be solved for cathode materials of lithium–sulfur batteries. The adsorption and catalytic conversion of LiPSs by host materials have become the main focus of cathode materials. In this work, transition metal phosphides are combined with three-dimensional carbon nanosheets to form an efficient and stable sulfur host material. The designed composite material is effective in solving the problems of slow reaction kinetics of Li–S batteries and LiPSs shuttling. Here, through the supramolecular self-assembly process of melamine and phytic acid, combined with soluble salt template technology, N- and P-codoped three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon materials with uniformly dispersed CoP nanoparticles were efficiently synthesized. The catalytic effect of CoP nanoparticles improves the reaction kinetics effectively of LiPS conversion. The strong polarity of CoP nanoparticles is beneficial to the adsorption of polysulfide ions. Moreover, the high specific area provides more LiPS adsorption sites, and the doping of N and P heteroatoms further increases the active sites of the composites. The experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the introduction of CoP promotes the conversion of LiPSs and accelerates the nucleation rate of Li2S, thereby improving the electrochemical performance of the composite as a sulfur host for lithium–sulfur batteries.

Tip effect assisted high active sites for oxygen evolution reaction tuned using transition metals (Cr, Fe and Mo) doped with CoP

Xiaoyun Zhang,Shifan Zhu,Yixue Xu,Yuqiao Wang

The tip effect of the high curvature tip top can cause electromagnetic effects to improve the catalytic performance. Doping of transition metals (Cr, Fe and Mo) into CoP array nanocones alters the tip curvature of CoP to strengthen the tip effect with increasing curvature. The stronger tip effect of Fe-CoP improves OH− concentration, accelerates surface charge transfer and enhances the electric field for a higher catalytic efficiency. Fast charge transfer and high electronic conductivity are attributed to transition metal doping, which can be confirmed by theoretical simulations and experiments. The optimized d-band centre of Fe-CoP adjusts the appropriate adsorption strength of the reaction intermediates. Fe doping endows CoP with a higher curvature cone structure and optimizes electronic structure for high catalytic activity and reaction kinetics. Tip cone as special sites tuned by transition metal doping provides a strategy for efficient non-noble metal catalysis.

A coral-like composite of CoP-modified polyaniline-derived carbon chain skeleton as an efficient sulfur host for lithium-sulfur batteries

Jihan Li,Jihui Zhang,Weiliang Liu,Mei Li,Jinshui Yao,Yuanhao Wang,Manman Ren

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted wide attention in the field of rechargeable batteries due to their high theoretical energy density. However, the severe “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the slow conversion kinetics are key factors restricting the commercial application of LSBs. To address these issues, we designed and prepared a coral-like composite of CoP-modified polyaniline-derived carbon chain skeleton (CoP/C) as the sulfur host for LSBs. The carbon chains can provide multidirectional channels for the transport of Li + and electron; and the uniformly scattered CoP can adsorb the LiPSs through chemical adsorption and simultaneously promote their conversion, thus the “shuttle effect” can be effectively alleviated. Meanwhile, the effect of the amount of aniline monomer on the electrochemical performance of sulfur cathode were studied. After sulfur loading, the CoP/C-300/S (with aniline monomer addition of 300 μL) exhibits the best electrochemical performance. At 1 C, after 500 cycles, it still maintains a reversible specific capacity of 478 mA h g −1 , with a decay rate of 0.074% per cycle, indicating its excellent cycling stability. This work provides a new approach for the application of CoP material in advanced LSBs.

Novel B-N-Co surface bonding states constructed on hollow tubular boron doped g-C3N4/CoP for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

Yingying Jiao,Yike Li,Jianshe Wang,Zhanhang He,Zhongjun Li

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is a promising photocatalyst for water hydrogen evolution. Nonetheless, fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the slow kinetics of hydrogen production result in the unsatisfactory efficiency of solar hydrogen production. we address this issue by anchoring the cobalt phosphide (CoP) cocatalyst onto the one-dimensional boron doped g-C 3 N 4 nanotube (B-CNNT) to construct B- N -Co surface bonding states in the B-CNNT/CoP photocatalyst. Spectroscopic measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the B- N -Co bonds optimize the local electronic distribution of bonded Co and adjacent P atoms, strengthen the electrons’ delocalization capacity of Co atoms for high electrical conductivity and accelerate the photogenerated carrier transfer between B-CNNT and CoP, which lead to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the B-CNNT/CoP photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. B-CNNT/CoP-2.45% achieved a remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 784 μmol g -1 h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 5.32% at 420 nm, which is significantly higher than demonstrated by CNNT/CoP-2.45% (153 μmol g -1 h −1 ). Our findings provide insights into as well as establish theoretical and practical grounds for the development of low-cost, high-performance photocatalytic materials for hydrogen evolution.

In situ coupled MoO3 with CoP/rGO to construct three-dimensional self-supported catalyst for highly efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Zhuoran Hou,Di Yang,Yuntao Xin,Haoyu Huang,Xin Hu,Yuyang Guo,Siduo Wu,Liwen Hu

In order to solve the crisis of energy depletion and protect the beautiful natural environment, the development of efficient, cost-effective and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst has attracted great attention, but it is still an urgent challenge to fabricate an abundant and low cost electrocatalyst. In this article, a novel HER catalyst with heterogeneous structure interfaces was in situ synthesized by multi-step electrodeposition method, and the mechanism of the enhancement of its electrocatalytic activity was elucidated by the combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculation and multi-characterizations. The initial overpotential is only 83 mV and the Tafel slope is only 58.5 mV/dec, which is better than most of other reported CoP-based electrocatalyst. At the meantime, DFT calculations show that the incorporation of MoO 3 and rGO leads to electron redistribution among different components, which ensures efficient adsorption and activation of H 2 O molecules and hydrogen atoms. Therefore, this work will contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms associated with heterojunctions and provide guidance for the rational design of a hybrid catalyst.

Porous coordination polymer-derived ultrasmall CoP encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon for efficient hydrogen evolution in both acidic and basic media

Shuai Liu,Anning Jiang,Zegao Wang,Mengxia Lin,Dan Xia,Qiang Li,Mingdong Dong

Exploiting high-efficient and stable non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of enormous significance to address the shortage of global power source, but there remain major challenges. Here we present a facile and controllable strategy to synthesize a strongly coupled ultrasmall-cobalt phosphide/nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon (u-CoP@NC) hybrid structure via phosphorization from a porous coordination polymer (PCP) precursor. The PCP-derived u-CoP@NC exhibits remarkable activity and stability for HER, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential of 131 mV in acidic media and 111 mV in basic media. The corresponding Tafel slopes present in acidic and basic media are 62.7 and 70.3 mV dec −1 , respectively. Results reveal that the enhanced electrocatalytic performance of u-CoP@NC originates from the strongly coupled u-CoP nanoparticles and graphitic carbon layer, and the perfect dispersity of the active sites. This research opens up new avenues for designing earth-abundant metal-based electrocatalysts with high capability for water splitting applications.

Diethylenetriamine-mediated self-assembly of three-dimensional hierarchical nanoporous CoP nanoflowers/pristine graphene interconnected networks as efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution

Xiuling Fan,Xiaoyan Wang,Weiyong Yuan,Chang Ming Li

Highly active, durable, and low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts are critical for large-scale energy storage in the form of hydrogen through water splitting but their fabrication presents great challenges. Herein we report the synthesis of a novel 3D hierarchical nanoporous CoP nanoflowers/pristine graphene interconnected network structure via diethylenetriamine (DETA)-mediated self-assembly, in which DETA promoted the uniform dispersion of graphene and the nucleation of the CoP precursor on graphene, the seed aggregation facilitated the formation of nanoflowers and a 3D network, and the gas release during the low-temperature phosphidation produced nanopores inside the nanoflowers. This nanoarchitecture shows an onset potential of −0.014 V, an overpotential of 98.1 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 40.9 mV dec−1, and an exchange current density of 0.119 mA cm−2. The onset overpotential, overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm−2, and Tafel slope are all among the lowest reported for non-noble metal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, and the exchange current density also compares favorably to those of most reported HER catalysts. In addition, the catalyst exhibits excellent durability with negligible loss in current density after 2000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles (+0.01 to −0.17 V vs. the RHE, at a scan rate of 100 mV s−1) or 23.5 h of chronoamperometric measurement at an overpotential of 98.1 mV, and a high faradaic efficiency of close to 100%. This work not only creates a high-performance and inexpensive HER electrocatalyst by utilizing the great advantages of 3D hierarchically nanostructured networks, but also develops a facile and economical strategy for the self-assembly of hierarchical nanostructures and offers scientific insight into its mechanism.

Monolithically integrated CoP nanowire array: An on/off switch for effective on-demand hydrogen generation via hydrolysis of NaBH4 and NH3BH3

Cui Liang,Xu Yuanhong,Niu Li,Yang Wenrong,Liu Jingquan

The issues of hydrogen generation and storage have hindered the widespread use and commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It is thus highly attractive, but the design and development of highly active non-noble-metal catalysts for on-demand hydrogen release from alkaline NaBH 4 solution under mild conditions remains a key challenge. Herein, we describe the use of CoP nanowire array integrated on a Ti mesh (CoP NA/Ti) as a three-dimensional (3D) monolithic catalyst for efficient hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NaBH 4 in basic solutions. The CoP NA/Ti works as an on/off switch for on-demand hydrogen generation at a rate of 6,500 mL/(min·g) and a low activation energy of 41 kJ/mol. It is highly robust for repeated usage after recycling, without sacrificing catalytic performance. Remarkably, this catalyst also performs efficiently for the hydrolysis of NH 3 BH 3 .

Dual-Driven Interfaces of a CoP/CoO Cocatalyst on a Host Photocatalyst for Rapid Charge Transport in Solar-Driven H2 Evolution

Qiang Wang,Lina Kong,Jianping Xu,Baozeng Zhou,Xiaofan Liu,Ziyu Lin,Shaobo Shi,Xiaosong Zhang,Lan Li

The construction of efficient and nonprecious cocatalysts, along with the establishment of rapid interfacial charge migration pathways to host semiconductors, is a major process in enhancing photocatalytic water splitting performance and remains a formidable challenge. Herein, the composition of CoP/CoO cocatalysts on g-C3N4 is regulated through phosphating for efficient and stable H2 evolution. Comprehensive analyses reveal that the CoO nanocrystals, possessing a bandgap of 1.95 eV, are uniformly loaded onto g-C3N4 with a portion undergoing an in situ transformation to metallic CoP, thereby forming a well-defined interfacial energy level structure for carrier separation. Moreover, the CoP/CoO cocatalysts exhibited a lower hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔGH) than that of the mono CoP or CoO. The optimal CoP/CoO/g-C3N4 exhibits an attractive and stable rate of solar-driven H2 evolution at 0.86 mmol·g–1·h–1, surpassing the rates of CoO/g-C3N4 and Pt/g-C3N4 by 30 and 1.5 times, respectively. The dual-driven interfaces of CoP/CoO/g-C3N4 provide a 2-fold acceleration for directional carrier transfer, in conjunction with accelerated surface reaction kinetics, resulting in efficient and stable H2 evolution. This scalable strategy, focusing interfacial engineering for rapid carrier transfer, offers a novel perspective in the design of highly active cocatalysts to boost the photocatalytic application.
