Chemical modification on hydrochars can significantly improve their ability of removing heavy metal ions from wastewater, but so far no research has focused on the chemical modification through free radical reaction. In this work, a cation functionalized hydrochar (CFHC) bearing − N + H 2 R was synthesized by grafting-polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto bamboo hydrochar under initiation by benzoyl peroxide, followed by the amination with the introduced epoxy group and diethylenetriamine and a subsequent hydrochloric acid treatment. The resulted CFHC exhibited a superior removal capacity of 424.09 mg·g −1 for Cr(VI), and the highest sorption occurred at pH of 2. Combining a series of characterizations and tests, it was concluded that the sorption conformed to the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich equations, indicating a multilayer chemisorption process that mainly driven by electrostatic reaction, reduction, and surface complexation. This research proved that a free radical polymerization treatment could effectively transform hydrochars into super adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

In the realm of sensing, carbon dots (CDs) have exhibited remarkable fluorescence characteristics. In the field of catalysis, CDs can function concurrently as electron donors and acceptors and have substantial electron or hole transport capacities. In this study, both merits were integrated into one, and a one-step hydrothermal approach was used to create multifunctional CDs. On the one hand, CDs are employed as a fluorescence probe with good sensitivity and selectivity to detect Cr(VI). On the other hand, CDs exhibit strong photoreduction capabilities for Cr(VI) in the absence of any external cocatalysts or photosensitizers when acting as photoinitiators. The results show that Cr(VI) quenches the CDs fluorescence as a result of the combined effects of static quenching and the inner filter effect. At the same time, under the condition of illumination, the inner filter effect encourages the CDs electrons to move from the valence band to the conduction band, resulting in electron hole pairs. With the help of electrons' reducing power, Cr(VI) can be rapidly and effectively converted to Cr(III). The findings of this study suggest that CDs are a satisfying bi-functional carbon-based material with significant potential for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

Electrochemical reduction and treatment of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater normally suffer from a high overpotential, due to the extravagant consumption of electrons by the adverse reactions of hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction. In this work, the MoS 2 film electrode prepared by electrochemical deposition-annealing method was applied into the electrochemical reduction of Cr(VI), with the aim to suppress the over-potential of the reduction and improve the utilization of electrons. Results demonstrated that the 2H/1T′ heterostructure of MoS 2 enhanced the reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) up to 99% at a lower potential of −1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The in-situ electrochemically generated hydrogen peroxide was found to play a critical role in accelerating the reduction of Cr(VI). Selective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via a two-electron pathway on the MoS 2 cathode was responsible for the formation of hydrogen peroxide, where the MoS 2 film electrode annealed at 700 °C can obtain a high productivity of 360 μM hydrogen peroxide within 60 min. The plenty of preserved interfaces between 2H and 1 T′ in the heterophase MoS 2 were crucial to the selective electrocatalytic activity. In addition, this electrode also presented an excellent electrocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which could form atomic hydrogen on the surface of cathode to facilitate the reduction of Cr(VI) under the anoxic condition. This study paves a novel pathway to in-situ deposit the MoS 2 film electrode for the sustainable electrochemical reduction and treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

CeO 2 with different morphologies (nanoparticles/NP, nanorods/NR, nanocubes/NC, nano-octahedra/NO) are synthesized and decorated on BiOI nanoplates substrates to form CeO 2 @BiOI composites, which are used for aqueous Cr(VI) degradation. The intersurface states between BiOI and diverse CeO 2 nanoparticles exhibit distinct behaviors when checked by XPS and photoluminescence intensity. The Cr(VI) degradation results show that the synthesized CeO 2 @BiOI nanocomposites possess higher photocatalytic activity than pure CeO 2 or BiOI, and the CeO 2 -NP@BiOI nanocomposite (molar ratio of CeO 2 : BiOI = 1:2) is the best one among them, with which the Cr(VI) is degraded up to 95.0% after 30 min irradiation using it as the photocatalyst. The superior catalytic performance of CeO 2 -NP@BiOI can be attributed to a higher Ce 3+ ratio of CeO 2 -NP, a larger specific surface area, relatively low OH/CO 3 2− content on the composite surface, and especially the good interaction between the CeO 2 (111) facet and the BiOI surface.

Novel green and blue chromophores based on Ni/Co/Cr doped BaMg 6 Ti 6 O 19 solid solutions are successfully synthesized through a solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of all the samples belongs to the magnetoplumbite structure with the space group of P 6 3 / mmc . The BaMg 6- x /2 Ti 6- x /2 Ni x O 19 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) compounds exhibit a light green ( x = 0.1) to yellow-green ( x = 0.3) color. The oxidation state of Ni is confirmed to be +2 valence and the d-d transition of Ni 2+ in octahedral sites is responsible for color. BaMg 6- x /2 Ti 6- x /2 Co x O 19 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) series show a blue color and the intensity of blueness is increasing with the increase of Co content. The blue color is due to d-d transitions within Co 2+ present in the tetrahedral sites. For BaMg 6- x /2 Ti 6- x /2 Cr x O 19 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) phases the color varies from light green ( x = 0.2) to green ( x = 2). Chromium exists in +3 and + 6 oxidation states and the observed color is due to charge transfer transition between Cr 3+ –Ti 4+ and d-d transitions within octahedral Cr 3+ sites resulting in strong absorption in the visible region. The synthesized colored oxides are mixed with PMMA to prepare novel green and blue PMMA polymer composites to evaluate their compatibility in plastics.

The self-assembled polymer nanotubes were obtained by a simple solvothermal method. Its physicochemical properties were characterized by SEM, BET, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, and solid-state 13 C magnetic resonance. The effects of initial pH, dosage, and coexisting ions were evaluated for its Cr(VI) adsorption performances. The result showed that polymer nanotubes surface had a large number of organic functional groups and porous structures. In 140 mg/L Cr(VI) solution, polymer nanotubes obtained the largest Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 147.81 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms agreed well with the pseudo-second-order and Redlich–Peterson models, respectively. The desorption process showed that the polymer nanotubes were easy to regenerate in strong polarity solution and had a high removal efficiency. Ionic strength played an important role in the adsorption and the adsorption interaction contained electrostatic interaction, reduction, and chelation in this work. The self-assembly method will constitute a highly efficient adsorbent.

To create an economical, stable, along highly efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, this paper reports on a Cr-doped self-supported Co-P-Cr/NF high-performance HER catalyst synthesized in one step. It exhibits overpotentials of 41.44 mV at −10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the impedance is only 0.56 Ω, and the double-layer capacitance value is 40.02 mF cm −2 . After a 12-hour stability test, the catalyst shows only minimal overpotential increase. Using techniques including XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM, the structure of the electrocatalyst was thoroughly investigated. The introduction of Cr and the excellent electronegativity of P enhance the redox capability and show superior intrinsic electrocatalytic ability in Co-P-Cr/NF catalysts. Therefore, the Co-P-Cr/NF catalyst that has been developed shows promise in replacing costly Pt-based electrocatalysts in the HER.

Chromium selenide (Cr–Se)-based low-dimensional materials have attracted significant attention in spintronics because of their diverse structure- and composition-dependent magnetic properties. While significant progress has been made in fabricating the Cr–Se family of nanomaterials through techniques like chemical vapor deposition, the synthesis of Cr–Se nanocrystals (NCs) via colloidal methods remains underexplored. In this work, we demonstrate the robust colloidal synthesis approach for producing Cr2Se3 and Cr3Se4 NCs with distinct morphologies by varying the Cr precursors and ligands. Cr–Se NCs can serve as templates for cation exchange (CE) reactions involving monovalent Cu+ and Ag+, divalent Zn2+ and Cd2+, and trivalent In3+, facilitating the creation of a diverse library of metal selenide NCs and nanoheterostructures. Our findings highlight how the outcomes of CE reactions are influenced by the structure of various Cr–Se phases. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of the as-synthesized Cr–Se NCs and their derivative CuCrSe2 were investigated. Our work provides a robust synthesis route for the Cr–Se class of magnetic nanomaterials and a platform for creating a diverse range of functional metal selenide NCs via CE reactions.

Microplastics (MPs) can act as vectors for various contaminants in the aquatic environment. Although some research has investigated the adsorption characteristics and influencing factors of metals/organic molecules on MPs, the effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM) (which are ubiquitous active species in ecosystems) on metal oxyanions such as Cr(VI) capture by MPs are largely unknown. This study explored the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Cr(VI) oxyanions onto polystyrene (PS) MPs using batch adsorption experiments and multiple spectroscopic methods. The effects of representative DOM components (i.e., humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and tannic acid (TA)) on Cr(VI) capture by PS were particularly studied. Results revealed a significantly enhanced adsorption of Cr(VI) on PS in the presence of TA. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity was increased from 2876 μg g −1 to 4259 μg g −1 and 5135 μg g −1 when the TA concentrations raised from 0 to 10 and 20 mg L −1 , respectively. Combined microscopic and spectroscopic investigations revealed that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) by TA and formed stable Cr(OH) 3 colloids on PS surfaces. Contrarily, HA and FA inhibited Cr(VI) adsorption onto PS, especially at pH > 2.0 and higher DOM concentrations, due to site competition and electrostatic repulsion. Increase in pH was found to reduce zeta potentials of MPs, resulting in inhibited Cr(VI) adsorption. The adsorbed Cr(VI) declined with increasing ionic strength, implying that outer-sphere surface complexation affected the adsorption process in the presence of DOM. These new findings improved our fundamental understanding of the fate of Cr(VI) and MPs in DOM-rich environmental matrices.

The pollution of poisonous Cr(VI) poses a severe threat to our health, and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) has become a high-efficiency way for wastewater remediation. Herein, the catalyst with metallic Ni confined in an N-doped mesoporous carbon sphere was prepared by the easy pyrolysis method of carbon sphere with Ni salts and showed remarkable activity, selectivity, and stability for reducing Cr(VI) with HCOOH. Notably, the Ni-N-C600 can rapid and 100 % reduction of the high concentrations of Cr(VI) (100 mg/L, 100 ml) using HCOOH within 7 min at room temperature over the reported Ni-based catalysts. Even in the presence of coexisting ions (0.1 M of Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Zn 2+ , NO 3 − , Cl − , CO 3 2− , and SO 4 2− ), its catalytic efficiency is not affected at all. The catalytic activity of the Ni-N-C600 declined little even after five cycles because the confinement effect of the mesoporous carbon sphere physical barrier prevented the leaching and aggregation of Ni NPs. The magnetism of metallic Ni greatly facilitates the separation of the catalyst. The reduction mechanism is mainly achieved by active hydrogen produced through the dehydrogenation of HCOOH. In addition, the electronic donation of C-containing functional groups also caused a partial reduction of Cr(VI). This work provides a rational design and development of high-efficiency non-noble metal catalysts to reduce Cr(VI).

The pursuit of broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphors for next-generation smart NIR light sources has garnered extensive interest. However, developing phosphors efficiently excitable by blue light to produce thermally stable and highly efficient broadband NIR emission surpassing 830 nm remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a novel CaGd 2 Ga 4 SiO 12 garnet is reported, designed through a structure reconstruction approach to host Cr 3+ ions for developing a high-performance broadband NIR phosphor. By strategically introducing Jahn–Teller distortion at the octahedral sites via chemical pressure, Cr 3+ is endowed with a super-broadband NIR emission spanning 600–1300 nm centered at 837 nm. The full-width at half maximum (FWHM) varies from 187 to 223 nm across Cr 3+ doping concentrations, with the highest internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 99.01%. Remarkable luminescence thermal stability (90.37%@423 K) is bolstered by a weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC) effect and trap-mediated energy compensation, a result of the heterovalent ion substitutions in dodecahedral and tetrahedral sites. Furthermore, a prototype broadband NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) is fabricated, delivering a substantial NIR output power of 287.7 mW at 1100 mA and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.4% at 30 mA, enabling impressive performance in versatile applications, including component analysis, non-destructive testing, NIR imaging, and night vision.

Visible-light-driven photocatalysis has been widely employed as an efficient and environment-friendly technology for organic pollutants removal from wastewaters. Herein, a novel approach of BiVO 4 -catalyzed sulfite under visible light irradiation (BiVO 4 /sulfite/vis) was established to achieve the model contaminant methyl orange (MO) removal. About 92.06% of MO could be rapidly degraded within 50 min in this new catalytic system and the reaction rate was close to 105.29-fold as high as that of BiVO 4 /vis system. The effects of sulfite amount, catalysis dosage, MO concentration, inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs) were deeply investigated and the correspondent mechanisms were also discussed. Interestingly, the coexisting Cr(VI) at certain concentration would accelerate MO removal and further demonstrated by phenol and atrazine degradation through the Cr(VI) + organic pollutants combined pollution system. The presence of HA in BiVO 4 /sulfite/vis also exhibited positive effects on the degradation of organic pollutants, attributable to more OH species generation. Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra (3D EEMs) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) were implemented to explore MO degradation pathway. The sulfite (SO 3 − ) generation was confirmed by active species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR), and N 2 purging reaction was also carried out to exclude the oxidative species of SO 3 − . The photoinduced holes played a direct role in the SO 3 − generation and the OH radical also contributed. This study provides new thoughts to improve the photodegradation of multiple organic pollutants by the introducing of sulfite or sulfite/Cr(VI).
