CuS–Cu9S8 nanoparticles as an efficient catalyst: A facile method via anion controlled

Mengfan Liang,Yan Zhu,Shuhong Sun

In this paper, a facile, surfactant-free and mild solution chemistry route was employed to prepare copper sulfide (CuS–Cu 9 S 8 ) nanoparticles (NPs) by using anion-controlled agents with a different electronegativity. Counterions CH 3 COO − were found to be suitable for regular hexagonal morphology formation, whereas in the presence of NO − 3 NO3− , irregular structure is obtained. By changing the anion of the copper precursor, the ratio of formation of Cu 9 S 8 and CuS can be changed, and the band gap energy ( Eg ) of as-prepared NPs can be controlled in the presence of anion-controlled agents. Moreover, we demonstrate here the catalytic performance of the as-prepared samples for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) both under the simulated natural light and in dark, and the result shows that the CuS–Cu 9 S 8 NPs exhibited better catalytic activity under visible light ( > 5 0 >50 %) than in darkness (45%), and CuS–Cu 9 S 8 NPs with higher electronegativity of anion-controlled exhibited the higher catalytic performance. In addition, a simple and direct diagram was applied to illustrate the mechanism of the degradation of MB.

Supramolecular Nanosystem Based on Pillararene-Capped CuS Nanoparticles for Targeted Chemo-Photothermal Therapy

Qing-Lan Li,Yao Sun,Li Ren,Xin Wang,Chen Wang,Lin Li,Ying-Wei Yang,Xianghui Yu,Jihong Yu

A smart supramolecular nanosystem integrating targeting, chemotherapy, and photothermal therapy was constructed based on carboxylatopillar[5]arene (CP[5]A)-functionalized CuS nanoparticles (CuS@CP NPs). CuS@CP NPs with good monodispersibility and strong near-infrared absorption were synthesized in aqueous solution through a facile one-pot supramolecular capping method, followed by surface installation of a liver cancer-targeted galactose derivative through host–guest binding interaction. The resulting smart supramolecular nanosystem, namely, CuS@CPG, exhibited excellent photothermal ablation capability to HepG2 cells upon irradiation with laser at 808 nm. Chemotherapeutic drug, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), was further loaded on CuS@CPG via electrostatic interactions between positively charged DOX and negatively charged CP[5]A to give CuS@CPG–DOX with a high drug-loading capacity up to 48.4%. The weakening of DOX–CP[5]A interactions in an acidic environment promoted the pH-responsive drug release from CuS@CPG–DOX. Significantly, this multifunctional supramolecular nanosystem showed a remarkably enhanced therapeutic effect through the combination of targeted chemotherapy and photothermal therapy upon in vitro cell study. Moreover, preliminary in vivo study demonstrated that CuS@CPG and CuS@CPG–DOX had good biocompatibility and excellent tumor inhibition effects upon near-infrared laser irradiation.

A CuS/Fe2TiO5 Heterojunction Photocatalyst for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B

Hu Guowei,Wang Xiaohuan,Yuan Zhipeng,Guo You,Yang Congjie

Constructing heterojunctions is important for improving the photocatalytic performance of materials. In this study, porous Fe 2 TiO 5 was prepared via a sol-gel method, and CuS was grown in situ on its surface through a hydrothermal process, thereby successfully synthesizing CuS/Fe 2 TiO 5 heterojunction composites. The CuS/Fe 2 TiO 5 composites were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The results indicated that CuS is uniformly loaded on the surface of Fe 2 TiO 5 , with lattice spacings of 0.3550 and 0.2972 nm corresponding to CuS and Fe 2 TiO 5 , respectively, and no impurity phases were observed. Heterojunction construction induced distortion of the TiO 6 octahedra at the interface, resulting in the emergence of a new absorption peak in the ultraviolet region. Among the samples, the 20 wt.% CuS/Fe 2 TiO 5 (denoted as 20CuF 2 ) composite exhibited a specific surface area (S BET = 6.17 m 2 /g) between those of CuS (S BET = 4.87 m 2 /g) and Fe 2 TiO 5 (S BET = 7.71 m 2 /g). Its bandgap was tuned to 1.78 eV, and the photoluminescence intensity was significantly reduced. A CuS/Fe 2 TiO 5 heterojunction composite was applied to facilitate the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), achieving a degradation efficiency of 91.8%. The heterojunction catalysts developed in this study enable the effective degradation of pollutants in wastewater, providing a feasible technical reference for catalyst development and application.

Photo-responsive CuS@Al modified PVA-based nanofiber membranes with enhanced antibacterial efficiency

Yi Yang,Yingfeng Wang,Kaizhun Li,Wei Li,Xun Zhang,Maoli Yin,Xiaojuan Li,Zhipeng Ma,Hao Hou

CuS@6/PVA exhibited good photothermal conversion effect within 15 s. • CuS@6/PVA showed excellent photothermal and photodynamic antibacterial properties within 10 min. • Al@CuS/PVA series displayed satisfactory hemocompatibility. Wound infections remains a persistent clinical challenge, and antibacterial functionalization of wound dressings represented a promising and effective approach to addressing this issue. In this study, a series of aluminum-doped copper sulfide/polyvinyl alcohol (Al@CuS/PVA) nanofiber membranes were fabricated via electrospinning combined with an in situ synthesis method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy were adopted to conduct systematic characterization of the membranes’ structural and morphological properties. The results indicated that aluminum doping significantly enhanced both the photothermal conversion efficiency under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation and the photodynamic activity under simulated sunlight exposure. For CuS@6/PVA, the temperature rapidly increased to above 160 °C within 15 s under 1 W/cm² NIR irradiation, along with efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In photothermal and photodynamic antibacterial testing, CuS@6/PVA demonstrated impressive bacterial eradication efficiency. Both Escherichia coli and S. aureus were completely inactivated within 10 min under NIR or simulated sunlight irradiation. Hemocompatibility assessment demonstrated low hemolysis rates (<5%), indicating favorable blood compatibility. These findings demonstrate that Al@CuS/PVA nanofiber membranes possess considerable potential as a dual-mode antibacterial platform for advanced wound dressings and other biomedical applications. Defect-engineered layered double hydroxide/CuS heterojunction enabling synergistic photothermal-photodynamic antibacterial therapy

Zhichen Zhong,Chen Zhao,Yu Yang,Wanning Jin,Linsen Zhan,Licheng Xi,Tingting Hu,Yajie Zhang,Ruizheng Liang,Hai Li,Song Chen

Defect-engineered a-CoMo/CuS heterojunction nanosheets enable NIR-IIb (1550 nm) synergistic PDT/PTT therapy. • The nanosheets exhibit potent ROS generation and 50.02% PCE under 1550 nm excitation. • Synergistic PDT/PTT eradicates > 98% of E. coli and S. aureus in vitro via membrane damage and metabolic disruption. • In vivo , the nanosheets reduce bacteria by > 99% on day 3 and accelerate wound healing to 97.0% by day 9. Bacterial infections pose a major global health threat. While combining photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) offers a promising antibacterial strategy, its efficacy remains limited by low singlet oxygen yields, insufficient photothermal efficiency and poor tissue penetration. Herein, we report defect-engineered a-CoMo/CuS heterojunction nanosheets for synergistic PDT/PTT antibacterial therapy under 1550 nm laser irradiation. Acid etching of CoMo-LDH introduces oxygen vacancies that narrow the bandgap and promote charge separation. Meanwhile, in situ growth of CuS nanoparticles forms a heterojunction that further enhances interfacial charge transfer and enables high photothermal conversion. Consequently, these nanosheets eradicate > 98% of both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro through synergistic membrane disruption and intracellular dysfunction. In a mouse infected wound model, the nanosheets reduce bacterial burden by > 99% at day 3 and achieve 97.0% ± 1.6% healing at day 9, with suppressed inflammation, promoted M2 macrophage polarization, enhanced angiogenesis and collagen deposition. Collectively, this work provides a defect-engineered heterojunction nanoplatform that integrates efficient photodynamic and photothermal effects for synergistic antibacterial therapy and infected tissue regeneration.

CuS–NiFe/NF nanoflowers mediated photothermal enhanced Fenton-like catalysis for wastewater treatment

Jinghua Li,Qinghao He,Jianbo Zhang

In this study, CuS with an appropriate band gap and high catalytic activity was synthesized on its surface using a one-step method that employed nickel foam as a precursor. Ultimately, the CuS–NiFe/NF catalyst was successfully produced. The catalysts were characterized through various analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). When driven by near-infrared light, low-concentration CuS–NiFe/NF solutions can elevate the temperature by nearly 60° Celsius. The introduction of high bandgap CuS into the material enhances its photothermal performance. Meanwhile, the simultaneous presence of Cu and Fe atoms promotes the electron migration rate, exhibiting superior dye degradation capability across all evaluated parameters. Even after multiple uses, it maintains photothermal stability and resistance to degradation. More importantly, both CuS–NiFe/NF and its degradation products are environmentally friendly, demonstrating substantial potential for practical applications. This catalyst provides a novel approach for wastewater treatment.

Aluminum doped CuS nanocrystals for efficient antibacterial activity via photothermal and photodynamic pathways

Kaizhun Li,Yingfeng Wang,Ming Huang,Huiqin Zhang,Wei Li,Zhipeng Ma,Maoli Yin

The overuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, presenting a significant risk to public health and human well-being. A novel antibacterial material with safe and effective antibacterial properties is a viable strategy to address these issues. In this work, Al ions doped CuS particles (CuS@Al) with a flower-like nanostructure were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method, exhibiting good photothermal and photodynamic antibacterial properties. The morphological, microstructural and crystallinity of CuS@Al were evaluated by SEM, EDS, TEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS analyses. The introduction of Al ions significantly enhanced the photothermal effects of CuS@Al, and the temperature increased from 50.7 ℃ (CuS) to 58.1 ℃ (CuS-6) under irradiation (808 nm, 2.0 W·cm −2 , 10 min). The resulting CuS@Al exhibited a good photothermal conversion efficiency, effective release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and remarkable photothermal antibacterial activity. Both E. coli and S. aureus were completely inactivated by CuS@Al (0.5 mg/mL) under photodynamic conditions. The synthesis of CuS@Al provides a strategy for creating highly effective antibacterial materials in particulate form.

A Superlattice-Stabilized Layered CuS Anode for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Jiaqian Zhang,Qi Lei,Zhiguo Ren,Xiaohui Zhu,Ji Li,Zhao Li,Shilei Liu,Yiran Ding,Zheng Jiang,Jiong Li,Yaobo Huang,Xiaolong Li,Xingtai Zhou,Yong Wang,Daming Zhu,Mengqi Zeng,Lei Fu

Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) are attracting extensive attention owing to environmental friendliness and high safety. However, its practical applications are limited to the poor Coulombic efficiency and stability of a Zn anode. Herein, we demonstrate a periodically stacked CuS-CTAB superlattice, as a competitive conversion-type anode for AZIBs with greatly improved specific capacity, rate performance, and stability. The CuS layers react with Zn2+ to endow high capacity, while CTAB layers serve to stabilize the structure and facilitate Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Accordingly, CuS-CTAB shows superior rate performance (225.3 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1 with 144.4 mA h g–1 at 10 A g–1) and a respectable cyclability of 87.6% capacity retention over 3400 cycles at 10 A g–1. In view of the outstanding electrochemical properties, full batteries constructed with a CuS-CTAB anode and cathode (ZnxFeCo(CN)6 and ZnxMnO2) are evaluated in coin cells, which demonstrate impressive full-battery performance.

NIR-triggered photocatalytic/photothermal/photodynamic water remediation using eggshell-derived CaCO3/CuS nanocomposites

Xiaohui Zhang,Minghuan Liu,Zewen Kang,Bingqing Wang,Bo Wang,Fuyi Jiang,Xiansong Wang,Da-Peng Yang,Rafael Luque

The full utilization of sunlight and design of high-efficient and low-cost photocatalysts with robust stability for wastewater treatment is still a challenging task. Herein, we report an economic and simple strategy to prepare a novel photocatalyst by using eggshell as template and support. Rod-like Copper sulphide (CuS) nanoparticles are uniformly coated on the surface of porous eggshell to form CaCO 3 /CuS nanocomposite. Under NIR irradiation, the nanocomposite shows a high catalytic activity for 4-nirophenol (4-NP) reduction and strong photothermal ablation behavior against bacteria. A 98% degradation rate can be completed in 15 min, superior to that in the absence of Near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Bacterial inactivation ability is also closely related with photocatalyst concentrations and NIR power. A possible mechanism is suggested, which is attributed to the synergistic photocatalytic, photothermal, photodynamic effects. Our study indicates that waste eggshell not only can be used as an efficient support to immobilize nanoparticles, but also can act as reaction resource to provide active carbonate radicals ( CO 3 − ), which play an important role on target degradation molecules.

Room temperature synthesis of aqueous soluble covellite CuS nanocrystals with high photothermal conversion

Wenhui Chen,Yi Xie,Chao Hu,Tao Zeng,Huirong Jiang,Fen Qiao,Jiani Gu,Xunyi Dong,Xiujian Zhao

Near-infrared plasmonic binary copper-based chalcogenides have found promising applications in photovoltaics and photothermal therapy. Here, we report a facile synthetic protocol for aqueous soluble covellite (CuS) nanocrystals (NCs) at room temperature. In contrast to previously reported routes, the present method involves the reaction of Cu precursors (e.g. CuCl2, Cu(NO3)2, Cu(Ac)2) with sulphur precursors (e.g. Na2S and (NH4)2S) under ambient conditions in the presence of various ligands, requiring neither high temperature and high pressure nor an inert atmosphere. The as-synthesized CuS NCs, without any further ligand exchange, can be readily dispersed in water and exhibit well-defined near-infrared (NIR) plasmon absorbance. The scalability and reproducibility of the present procedure allow for the gram-scale production of CuS NCs in a one-pot reaction, which is elaborated by upscaling the amounts of precursors and solvents/ligands. In particular, when excited with an 806 nm laser (1.2 W cm−2), the aqueous soluble covellite NCs produce significant photothermal heating with a photothermal transduction efficiency of 20.3%, comparable to previously reported binary copper chalcogenides. Combined with good photothermal transduction properties, photostability and synthesis scalability, the present work provides a general and cost-effective synthetic protocol for not only Cu2−xS but also other copper chalcogenides for promising photothermal applications.

Biocompatible tumor-targeting nanocomposites based on CuS for tumor imaging and photothermal therapy

Li Liang,Shuwen Peng,Zhenwei Yuan,Chen Wei,Yuanyuan He,Jinrong Zheng,Yueqing Gu,Haiyan Chen

Active targeting of tumor receptors is a significant approach for cancer diagnosis. Additionally, development of photothermal agents for photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted great interest in the field of nanomedicine. In the present study, copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles capped with bovine serum albumin (BSA), named CuS@BSA, was synthesized by a convenient method. Then, the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probe MBA and the tumor-targeting ligand cyclic RGD were further conjugated on the surface of CuS@BSA, and the obtained nanocomposite was named CuS@BSA-MBA-cRGD. The morphology, optical properties, biotoxicity, tumor-targeting capability and in vitro and in vivo tumor inhibition effect were all characterized comprehensively. This nanocomplex demonstrated enhanced photothermal effects and positive tumor targeting. Thus, the nanocomposite CuS@BSA-MBA-cRGD can used as a promising tumor-targeting PTT agent for simultaneous cancer imaging and photothermal treatment.

Bifacial illuminated PbS quantum dot-sensitized solar cells with translucent CuS counter electrodes

Tu Yongguang,Wu Jihuai,Lan Zhang,Lin Yibing,Liu Qin,Lin Bingcheng,Liu Guozhang

This paper reports the optimization of the TiO 2 photoanode and the fabrication of bifacial illuminated PbS quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) with translucent CuS counter electrodes. TiO 2 photoanode is prepared by introducing a compact TiO 2 layer between FTO substrate and TiO 2 film with titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate) in 1-butanol and post-treatment with TiCl 4 aqueous solution; then, PbS quantum dots (QDs) are deposited on the surface of TiO 2 film by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method; also, by means of control of the TiO 2 surface charge, QD density of TiO 2 film is improved by adding triethanolamine into the cationic precursor solution. Using this optimized TiO 2 photoanode and a translucent CuS counter electrode, a bifacial illuminated PbS QDSSC is fabricated. The preparation conditions are optimized and the surface morphology and electrochemical properties of TiO 2 photoanodes are characterized. The bifacial illuminated PbS QDSSC achieves a power conversion efficiency of 2.16 %, which is increased by 48.97 % compared with the single illuminated QDSSC.
