In view of the demand for high sensitivity in optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of thermally coupled levels of rare-earth ions, in this work Ca 2+ -modified double molybdate NaBi(MoO 4 ) 2 co-doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ was employed as the host to systematically investigate its upconversion (UC) luminescence behavior and optical temperature-sensing performance. Appropriate substitution of Ca 2+ induces lattice distortion and optimizes the local crystal field and energy-level matching, thereby significantly enhancing the energy transfer efficiency between the activator ions. As a result, the green UC emission intensity in the Ca 2+ -doped samples is markedly increased compared with that of the undoped host, and the green-to-red emission intensity ratio is enhanced by 1.7 times, reaching a value of 62, with the corresponding green color purity exceeding 96%. Meanwhile, Ca 2+ doping effectively tunes the thermally coupled levels of Er 3+ , leading to a 2.05-fold improvement in the absolute optical temperature sensing sensitivity relative to the undoped sample, with a maximum absolute sensitivity of 1.793 %·K −1 , which is much higher than that of other reported UC phosphors of similar type. Cyclic temperature sensing measurements confirm that Ca 2+ -modified Y 3+ ,Er 3+ :NaBi(MoO 4 ) 2 exhibits excellent repeatability in the temperature range of 300-460 K, indicating promising application prospects. This study provides a new design strategy and experimental basis for constructing high-performance double molybdate materials that integrate strong UC luminescence with highly sensitive optical thermometry.

Tb 2 O 3 -based transparent ceramics are promising for laser-system Faraday isolators due to their excellent magneto-optical properties. However, residual porosity from sintering impairs optical quality, thus limiting the practical application. This core challenge derives from the intrinsic trade-off between pore elimination and grain growth. In this work, an aliovalent Zr 4+ /Ca 2+ co-doping strategy was adopted to regulate densification and grain-boundary migration. The Tb 2 O 3 -based ceramics were fabricated using pre-sintering followed by hot isostatic pressing. Microstructural characterization confirmed that Zr 4+ inhibited excessive sintering grain growth, while Ca 2+ promoted ceramic densification. The optimized ceramic doped with 1.0 at.% Zr 4+ and 0.18 at.% Ca 2+ achieved high in-line transmittances of 79.67% at 1064 nm and 75.39% at 650 nm. The Verdet constant at 650 nm was −366.85 rad·T −1 ·m −1 . These results demonstrated that Zr 4+ /Ca 2+ co-doping effectively promoted pore elimination while controlling grain growth, thereby improving the optical quality of Tb 2 O 3 -based magneto-optical ceramics.

Purification treatment is needed to control the concentration of SO42− and Ca2+ in brine to solve the problem of low electrolysis efficiency for the electrolysis of KCl solution in the chlor-alkali industry. However, the traditional barium method to remove SO42− faces the problem of high cost and environmental pollution. Herein, inexpensive and environmentally friendly anhydrous calcium chloride was used as the precipitant to replace barium chloride. The conditions for SO42− removal at room temperature were optimized by studying the precipitant doping ratio, reaction time, and stirring speed. The results indicated that the concentration of SO42− in brine could be reduced to less than 5 g L−1 at a raw material ratio of nCa2+ to nSO42− of 1.1 : 1, a stirring speed of 300 rpm, and a reaction time of 120 min. Ca2+ in the solution could be removed by introducing carbon dioxide, and the removal rate of Ca2+could reach 99.89% by adjusting the pH of the solution to an appropriate value. This work paves a new way for efficient brine refining to boost sustainable development in the chlor-alkali industry.

The properties of Pickering emulsions is affected by many factors, one of the most typical of which is the ionic environment. Existing studies have mainly focused on the effect of ions in the continuous phase on oil-in-water Pickering emulsions, and usually only single species of ions are studied. The water-in-oil Pickering emulsions are commonly used to encapsulate a variety of water-soluble functional substances, which often contain various of ions. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effect of ions in the internal phase on the properties of inverse Pickering emulsions. The inverse Pickering emulsions with an average droplet size of 100 μm were prepared using hydrophobized calcium carbonate particles. Subsequently, Na+ and Ca2+ were introduced into the internal phase to investigate their effects on the emulsion. The results show that the presence of Na+ can aggravate droplet coalescence, and Ca2+ can cause severe damage to the emulsions and even lead to phase inversion. It was speculated that Na+ can weaken the surface charge of particles by compressing the electric double layer, resulting in lower electrostatic repulsion between particles, thus changing the dispersion state of the particles and ultimately affecting the properties of the emulsion. And Ca2+ can combine with and release stearate from the particle surface through chemical reactions, thus changing the wettability of the particles and resulting in breaking and phase inversion of the emulsions. The present work is informative for the setting of the phase composition and the prediction of stability during the application of inverse Pickering emulsions.

Detecting abnormal levels of folic acid (FA), Fe 3+ , and Ca 2+ in the human body is crucial due to their association with various diseases. Orange peel carbon quantum dots (OP-CQDs) with blue fluorescence (λ ex = 370 nm, λ em = 440 nm) were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method when waste biomass orange peel was utilized as the carbon source. An “on-off” fluorescence sensor, referred to as OP-CQDs-FA-Fe 3+ /Ca 2+ , was developed for quantitative analysis of the drug FA, as well as the metal ions Fe 3+ and Ca 2+ . Additionally, the sensor was utilized for fluorescence imaging of HepG 2 liver cancer cells, demonstrating its exceptional biocompatibility. The concentration of FA displayed a linear relationship in the range of 5.00–90.00 μmol L −1 and 0.30–2.50 mmol L −1 , with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.15 μmol L −1 . The spiked recovery in folic acid tablets ranged from 95.70% to 104.50%. The addition of Fe 3+ or Ca 2+ leads to a reduction or restoration of the fluorescence intensity in the OP-CQDs-FA system, resulting in an “on-off” sensor mode. The spiked recoveries in human serum samples were 100.15%–100.48% for Fe 3+ and 98.05%–98.18% for Ca 2+ . This study highlights the considerable potential of OP-CQDs for ion detection, drug analysis, and cell imaging .

Flexible sensors which are highly stretchable, sensitive, and self-adhesive are critically required for wearable electronics, personalized healthcare monitoring and electronic skins. Conductive hydrogel-based sensors hold great promises for this purpose. However, it remains a critical challenge to integrate all the critical functions ( e.g. , remarkable stretchability, high sensitivity, and self-adhesiveness) into one hydrogel. Here, we propose a bio-inspired hybrid hydrogel framework with a hierarchical configuration that incorporates sodium casein, polydopamine, calcium chloride, and graphene oxide into a polyacrylamide hydrogel. Multiple interpenetrating network architectures and their strong interactions provide superior stretchability of 10,300%, high strain sensitivity with a gauge factor of 13.45 over a broad strain range, robust adhesiveness, fast responsiveness, and excellent reproducibility. This hydrogel-based wearable sensor demonstrates outstanding sensing performance in detecting, quantifying, and remotely monitoring human motions through integration into a cloud platform. A durable glove is further developed using the hybrid hydrogel for wirelessly controlling synchronized motions of a manipulator and accurately recognizing hand gestures. This hybrid hydrogel has shown wide-range applications in fields including wearable electronics, human–machine interfaces, and electronic skins.

The high salinity of oilfield-produced water caused by the presence of metal ions, such as Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ , has a significantly adverse effect on oil recovery. It is crucial to remove these metal ions efficiently before the oilfield wastewater is reinjected down into the oil wells. To address this issue, we prepared a PEG/Fe 3 O 4 /GO-NH 2 nanoadsorbent by aminating GO, incorporating magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and coating with PEG (PEG = poly(ethylene glycol); GO-NH 2 = aminated graphene oxide). We investigated the removal ratios of the nanoadsorbent for Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . The respective removal ratios for Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ reached 69.8 % and 61.1 % at 10 min, indicating that the nanoadsorbent was capable of efficiently removing Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . We also evaluated the reusability of the nanoadsorbent by recycling and reusing it 5 times. At the fifth recycling run, the nanoadsorbent retained relatively high reuse rates (79.1 % for Ca 2+ , 69.5 % for Mg 2+ ) and removal ratios (69.5 % for Ca 2+ , 64.3 % for Mg 2+ ), suggesting that the nanoadsorbent possessed relatively high reusability. Oilfield wastewater treated with the nanoadsorbent was employed for oil recovery in core displacement experiments. The oil recovery efficiency significantly increased by 11.8 % compared with untreated oilfield wastewater. Therefore, the PEG/Fe 3 O 4 /GO-NH 2 nanoadsorbent exhibits considerable potential for the treatment of oilfield wastewater to enhance oil recovery.

The stability of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) is expected to play a key role in the environmental risk assessment of nanotoxicity in aquatic systems. In this study, the effect of alginate (model polysaccharides) on the stability of CuO NPs in various environmentally relevant ionic strength conditions was investigated by using time-resolved dynamic light scattering. Significant aggregation of CuO NPs was observed in the presence of both monovalent and divalent cations. The critical coagulation concentrations (CCC) were 54.5 and 2.9 mM for NaNO 3 and Ca(NO 3 ) 2 , respectively. The presence of alginate slowed nano-CuO aggregation rates over the entire NaNO 3 concentration range due to the combined electrostatic and steric effect. High concentrations of Ca 2+ (>6 mM) resulted in stronger adsorption of alginate onto CuO NPs; however, enhanced aggregation of CuO NPs occurred simultaneously under the same conditions. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that the bridging interaction of alginate with Ca 2+ might be an important mechanism for the enhanced aggregation. Furthermore, significant coagulation of the alginate molecules was observed in solutions of high Ca 2+ concentrations, indicating a hetero-aggregation mechanism between the alginate-covered CuO NPs and the unabsorbed alginate. These results suggested a different aggregation mechanism of NPs might co-exist in aqueous systems enriched with natural organic matter, which should be taken into consideration in future studies.

Integrating high strength, flexibility, biocompatibility, adhesion, and freezing resistance into conductive hydrogels for developing wearable electronic devices has consistently posed significant challenges in relevant research fields. Inspired by the silk dissolution behavior, a robust, flexible, antifreezing, and conductive silk fibroin/polyacrylamide (SF/PAM) hydrogel was synthesized in a CaCl 2 -ethanol–water (Ca 2+ /E/W) ternary solvent via a one-pot photogelation process. The gelation of SF and AM was enhanced by the ternary solvent, attributed to the inhibitory effects of Ca 2+ ions and alcohols on hydrogen bond formation. The SF/PAM hydrogels based on Ca 2+ /E/W exhibited desirable mechanical properties (stretching: 800 % strain and 120 kPa stress; compression: 80 % strain and 334.0 kPa stress), excellent recoverability after deformation, high ion conductivity (2.4 S·cm −1 ) and strain sensitivity (gauge factor: ∼2.0), and low-temperature tolerance (−60 °C). These hydrogels were assembled into various wearable electronic devices, such as strain sensors, electronic skin, and electrodes, for detecting multiple physiological parameters, including joint activities, bioelectrical signals, and subtle movements like finger and wrist rotation, heartbeat, and vocal cord vibrations, demonstrating significant potential in flexible electronic applications.

Widespread application of the typical phthalate plasticizers , di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), poses a serious potential threat to the health of animals and even humans. Previous studies have confirmed the mechanism of DEHP-induced cardiac developmental defects in zebrafish larvae. However, the mechanism of cardiac dysfunction is still unclear. Thus, this work aimed to comprehensively investigate the mechanisms involved in DEHP-induced cardiac dysfunction through computational simulations, in vivo assays in zebrafish, and in vitro assays in cardiomyocytes. Firstly, molecular docking and western blot initially investigated the activating effect of DEHP on Pparg in zebrafish. Although GW9662 (PPARG antagonist) effectively alleviated DEHP-induced cardiac dysfunction and lipid metabolism disorders, it did not restore significant decreases in mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP levels. In vitro assays in cardiomyocytes, DEHP caused overexpression of PPARG and proteins involved in the regulation of Ca 2+ homeostasis , and the above abnormalities were effectively alleviated by GW9662, suggesting that the Ca 2+ homeostatic imbalance caused by activation of PPARG by DEHP seems to be the main cause of DEHP-induced cardiac dysfunction. To sum up, this work not only refines the mechanism of toxic effects of cardiotoxicity induced by DEHP, but provides an important theoretical basis for enriching the toxicological effects of DEHP.

Severe acute pancreatitis (AP) is a life-threatening pancreatic inflammatory disease with a high mortality rate (∼40%). Existing pharmaceutical therapies in development or in clinical trials showed insufficient treatment efficacy due to their single molecular therapeutic target, poor water solubility, short half-life, limited pancreas-targeting specificity, etc. Herein, acid-responsive hollow mesoporous Prussian blue nanoparticles wrapped with neutrophil membranes and surface modified with the N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine moiety were developed for codelivering membrane-permeable calcium chelator BAPTA-AM (BA) and trypsin activity inhibitor gabexate mesylate (Ga). In the AP mouse model, the formulation exhibited efficient recruitment at the inflammatory endothelium, trans-endothelial migration, and precise acinar cell targeting, resulting in rapid pancreatic localization and higher accumulation. A single low dose of the formulation (BA: 200 μg kg–1, Ga: 0.75 mg kg–1) significantly reduced pancreas function indicators to close to normal levels at 24 h, effectively restored the cell redox status, reduced apoptotic cell proportion, and blocked the systemic inflammatory amplified cascade, resulting in a dramatic increase in the survival rate from 58.3 to even 100%. Mechanistically, the formulation inhibited endoplasmic reticulum stress (IRE1/XBP1 and ATF4/CHOP axis) and restored impaired autophagy (Beclin-1/p62/LC3 axis), thereby preserving dying acinar cells and restoring the cellular “health status”. This formulation provides an upstream therapeutic strategy with clinical translation prospects for AP management through synergistic ion homeostasis regulation and pancreatic autodigestion inhibition.

Recent studies showed that sugar beet pectin exhibited more excellent emulsifying properties than traditional citrus peel pectin and apple pectin ascribed to the higher content of neutral sugar, protein, ferulic acid, and acetyl groups. It is precisely because of the extremely complex molecular structure of pectin that the emulsifying properties of the pectin–Ca2+ complex are still unclear. In this study, SBP-Ca2+ complexes with different cross-linking degrees were prepared. Subsequently, their interfacial adsorption kinetics, the resistance of interfacial films to external perturbances, and the long-term stability of the emulsions formed by these SBP-Ca2+ complexes were measured. The results indicated that the highly cross-linked SBP-Ca2+ complex exhibited slower interfacial adsorption kinetics than SBP alone. Moreover, compared with SBP alone, the oil–water interfacial film loaded by the highly cross-linked SBP-Ca2+ complex exhibited a lower elasticity and a poorer resistance to external perturbances. This resulted in a larger droplet size, a lower ζ-potential value, a larger continuous viscosity, and a worse long-term stability of the emulsion formed by the highly cross-linked SBP-Ca2+ complex. This study has very important guiding significance for deeply understanding the emulsification mechanism of the pectin–Ca2+ complex.
