Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II) adsorption properties of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres and their application in a continuous filtering removal device for heavy metal ions

Xingqi Wang,Wenxia Liu,Jian Tian,Zhenhuan Zhao,Pin Hao,Xueliang Kang,Yuanhua Sang,Hong Liu

Uniform well-defined nanostructured BiOBr microspheres have been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene glycol (EG). The heavy metal ion adsorption on the as-synthesized nanostructured BiOBr microspheres was systematically assessed by measuring the residual concentration during the adsorption process using a colorimetric method for Cr(VI) concentration, and an extraction-colorimetric method for Cd(II) and Pb(II) concentrations. The nanostructured BiOBr microspheres showed good removal capacity for heavy metal ions (Cr, Cd, Pb), and excellent adsorption properties for low concentration heavy metal ions, indicating potential applications in water purification. Based on the quick and efficient heavy metal ion removal ability of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres, a continuous filtering-type water purification device was designed and constructed. In using this continuous filtering type water purification device, 1 g of adsorbent can purify about 4900 g of Pb(II) contaminated water, 5900 g of Cd(II) contaminated water, or 21 500 g of Cr(VI) contaminated water having initial concentrations of 200 μg L−1 to successfully attain the World Health Organization standard for drinking water. The good removal capacity can be attributed to the hierarchical nanostructure, which displays a large specific surface area and strong adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Water-stable mixed-ligand Cd(II) metal-organic frameworks as bis-color excited fluorescent sensors for the detection of vitamins and pesticides in aqueous solutions

Zi-Ping Wang,Yu Wang,Xin-Yu Li,Lin-Fang Jia,Ai-Zhen Yang,Wen-Ting Zhao,Yi Jia,Bao-Yi Yu,Han-Qing Zhao

The synthesis and characterization of three 2D to 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with mixed ligands, namely {[Cd(DINT)(TPA)(H 2 O)]ACN} n (BAO24) (H 2 TPA = tere phthalic acid, DINT = 1,4-di(imidazol-1-yl)naphthalene, and ACN = acetonitrile), {[Cd(DINT)(IPA)]DMF} n (BAO25) (H 2 IPA = iso phthalic acid and DMF = N,N -dimethylformamide), and [Cd(DINT)(PA)] n (BAO26) (H 2 PA = phthalic acid), were reported herein. The structures and purities of the MOFs were revealed and confirmed by single-crystal X-Ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-Ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The MOFs exhibited a fluorescence emission peak around λ em = 340 nm with relative excitation wavelengths at both 230 and 290 nm. Since the MOFs showed similar fluorescence properties, BAO24 was selected as a representative MOF in the fluorescent sensing processes. The result showed that BAO24 exhibited a high sensitivity for vitamin B2. However, when sensing pesticides, the sensor performed differently at each excitation wavelength. At λ ex = 230 nm, the sensor was quenched the most significantly with the nitenpyram analyte, while at λ ex = 290 nm, the highest fluorescence quenching was achieved by the imidacloprid analyte.

In this investigation, six new metal complexes with 2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[d]imidazole (bpm) were synthesized and analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), including catena-bis[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carobxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole)-aqua-zinc] (1), catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carobxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole)-aqua-cadmium] (2), aqua-[2,2-bis(4-carobxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane]-bis[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole]-manganese (3), μ-[2-nitrobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylato]-μ-[2-nitrobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylato]-bis[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole]-di-zinc (4), catena-[bis(µ-2-nitrobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylato)-diaqua-bis(2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole)-di-cadmium] (5), aqua-[pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato]-[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole]-copper hydrate (6) (H2hfipbb = 2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane, H2nbdc acid = Nitroterephthalic acid, and H2pda = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid). Complex 1 crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group P21/n; 2 crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group C2/c; 3 crystallized in an orthorhombic system with space group Pna21; 5 crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group P21/c; 4 and 6 crystallized in triclinic systems with space group P-1. The DNA-binding modes of the complexes were investigated by several analysis methods (e.g. viscosity analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, fluorescent spectroscopic analysis, as well as UV spectroscopic analysis). Complexes 1-6 bind to calf thymus DNA via an intercalative mode. The results of this study provide insights into the mechanism of DNA binding and provide a basis for rationally designing new powerful reagents for DNA detection and targeting.

Synergistic valorization of red mud and spent coffee grounds via one-step hydrothermal carbonization for high-efficiency Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal from wastewater

Yuting Cui,Yue Zhou,Mingqian Cheng,Wei Fang,Yaoling Wang,Chao Chen,Tingting Liu,Bin Li,Zewei Liu

The escalating contamination of water resources by toxic heavy metals necessitates sustainable remediation strategies. This study presents a novel adsorbent, RHC-180/0.5, synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal carbonization under mild conditions, utilizing red mud (RM) and spent coffee grounds (SCG) as raw materials. The biopolymers in SCG, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, transformed into hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phenolic groups, enhancing the material's adsorption capacity. Batch adsorption experiments showed optimal performance under alkaline conditions. To minimize precipitation interference, the adsorption mechanism was further investigated at pH = 6. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models indicated chemical adsorption and heterogeneous multilayer adsorption, respectively. Simultaneously, the Langmuir model yielded maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of 302.33 mg/g and 154.97 mg/g for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively, confirming the excellent adsorption performance of RHC-180/0.5. Intraparticle diffusion model analysis showed that surface diffusion dominated in the three-phase adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic. Spectroscopic analysis validated the roles of chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and cation-π interactions, surface complexation, and redox reactions in the adsorption mechanism. At pH = 6, RHC-180/0.5 retained approximately 80 % of its initial removal efficiency after ten regeneration cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. This work highlights a sustainable, cost-effective approach to converting agricultural and industrial waste into high-performance adsorbents for heavy metal-contaminated wastewater treatment.

Accurate detection of Cd (II) based on His-Pd@Apt/PANI@Au-modified needle electrochemical ratiometric/colorimetric dual-mode sensor combined with a WeChat mini program

Lei Tian,Qi Guo,Luting Yan,Yuhao Zhang,Zekun Ren,Chao Wang,Xia Sun,Yemin Guo,Yanyan Zhang

Heavy metal cadmium (Cd (II)) contamination in aquatic products poses severe health risks, necessitating rapid, accurate, and portable detection methods. Traditional electrochemical sensors often suffer from background interference and low accuracy, especially when utilizing stainless steel acupuncture needles as electrodes. Single-signal systems are prone to environmental fluctuations, limiting reliability. Thus, there is an urgent need for a sensitive, low-cost, and visual sensor that integrates dual detection modes for on-site analysis of Cd (II). We report a novel ratiometric/colorimetric dual-mode aptamer sensor based on a polyaniline-gold nanocomposite (PANI@Au)-modified acupuncture needle. This platform uses PANI's peak at −0.9 V as an internal reference and His-Pd@aptamer's peak at −0.2 V as a detection signal, enabling ratiometric electrochemical quantification. In parallel, His-Pd nanoparticles catalyze the oxidation of TMB to produce a blue color, allowing visual detection with a limit of 3.10 × 10 −2  ng/L. RGB values are analyzed by a smartphone and WeChat mini-program for rapid result output. The electrochemical and colorimetric modes demonstrated excellent sensitivity (LOD: 3.40 × 10 −2  ng/L electrochemical; 1.06 × 10 −1  ng/L RGB-based) and linear range of 10 1 –10 8  ng/L. The sensor showed strong selectivity, stability, and successful application in detecting Cd (II) in fish, shrimp, and scallop samples with high recovery rates. This is the first report of a needle-based ratiometric/colorimetric aptamer sensor that enables both electrochemical quantification and smartphone-based visual detection of Cd (II). The device supports rapid, on-site, and low-skill operation with sub-100 μL samples, demonstrating its potential for real-time monitoring of heavy metal contamination in aquatic food safety.

Unraveling adsorption characteristics and removal mechanism of novel Zn/Fe-bimetal-loaded and starch-coated corn cobs biochar for Pb(II) and Cd(II) in wastewater

Haixin Xia,Yaohong Zhang,Qian Chen,Renrong Liu,Hai Wang

Two functionalized biochar composites (ZF@CBC and SZF@CBC) were fabricated and applied for capturing Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. SZF@CBC were achieved by loading Zn/Fe nanoparticles (NPs) and coating starch onto corn cobs biochar (CBC) surface, while ZF@CBC was realized by loading Zn/Fe NPs onto CBC surface. The characterization analysis (SEM-EDS, XRD and FTIR) revealed that Zn/Fe NPs and starch were successfully introduced onto CBC surface. The adsorption data of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by ZF@CBC and SZF@CBC conformed to the model of pseudo second order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal and the capture Pb(II) and Cd(II) was a chemisorption process. The maximum sorption capacities of SZF@CBC for Pb(II) and Cd(II) reached 199.98 mg/g and 183.93 mg/g, which were 3.37 and 3.84 times high as that of CBC, respectively. Due to the presence of plentiful exposed adsorption sites (–OH, –COOH, Zn-O and Fe-O) on SZF@CBC surface, which endowed it to accelerate Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption. In addition, complexation, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and physical adsorption took part in the adsorption process. Besides, SZF@CBC still exhibited very good removal capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II) even in the coexistence of multiple interfering ions and maintained stable adsorption capacity after five consecutive cycles. Therefore, SZF@CBC could be used as an excellent adsorbent for decontaminating Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater with multiple pollutants, and also could be used in resource utilization of biomass waste, which possessed potential applications prospects.

Development of fluorescence sensor and paper chips based on EDTA etched-CdTe@CdS QDs for the selective and sensitive detection of Cd(II) in rice samples

Hui Cao,Xiner Ding,Zixin Chen,Jialuo Mao,Xiuna Ma,Ziqi Wei,Tai Ye,Min Yuan,Jinsong Yu,Xiuxiu Wu,Fengqin Yin,Fei Xu

EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs were used as the specific recognition element and signal probe of a fluorescence sensor or paper chip for the highly sensitive detection of Cd(II) with an electronic eye device as readout. The results showed that the CdTe@CdS QDs were successfully synthesized with a typical core–shell structure. Under the optimum conditions, the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs sensor achieved the sensitive detection of Cd(II) with a detection limit of 0.092 μM and a concentration range of 0.44–6.67 μM. The paper chips based on the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs sensor had a visual cut-off value of 0.44 μM with a short detection time (<15 min). The proposed method also exhibited excellent stability, high specificity, and good recovery for Cd(II) in real rice samples. These results suggested that the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs provide a promising platform for on-site and visual detection of Cd(II) in rice samples.

One-pot amination and carboxylation functionalization of lignin for efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) and Cd(II): Influence of functional groups on adsorption equilibrium and mechanism

Zuoyu Jia,Fengkai Liang,Xinze Xu,Haifeng Zhou,Yaqing Zhang,Peng Liang

The removal of multiple heavy metal pollutants remains a challenge. Amination and carboxylation modified lignins (NCLs) prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method were used as adsorbents for Cr(VI) and Cd(II) removal. The oxygenous groups content in adsorbents was quantitatively analyzed by Boehm titration in which NCL10 (the mass ratio of citric acid: triethylene diamine = 10) possessed a maximum carboxyl group content of 1.22 mmol/g. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model was the most suitable, with the highest theoretical adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) of 1298.6 and 103.1 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, FT-IR and XPS exhibited that NCL5 surface contained many functional groups beneficial to the removal of Cr(VI) and Cd(II). The contribution of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups to the removal of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) was quantitatively analyzed. After the blocking of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, the adsorption rate of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) decreased by 26.4 %, 67.7 % and 7.2 %, 43.3 %, respectively. This study provides effective strategies to overcome the limitations of lignin adsorbents for wastewaters containing a wide range of heavy metal pollutants.

MoS₄2−-Intercalated MgFe-LDH/Biochar Hybrid for Efficient and Simultaneous Removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in Aqueous Solution: Insights into Adsorption Performance and Mechanisms

Li Lanlan,Wang Zili,Wang Guanghui,Zhang Xuewen,Deng Nansheng

Widespread contamination by Pb(II) and Cd(II) poses persistent environmental and public health risks, while achieving selective removal with a clear mechanistic understanding in multicomponent systems remains challenging. Herein, a MgFe-MoS₄-LDH/BC hybrid composite was synthesized via co-precipitation followed by MoS₄ 2 ⁻ intercalation to regulate interlayer chemistry and introduce sulfur-based active sites. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, and equilibrium data were well described by the Langmuir model, indicating dominant chemisorption. Under optimized conditions (C₀- Pb  = 100 mg/L, C₀- Cd  = 20 mg/L, pH = 6.0, dosage = 0.2 g/L), the composite achieved removal efficiencies of 99.53% for Pb(II) and 85.71% for Cd(II). In binary systems, Pb(II) showed stronger competitive behavior, exhibiting only a 4.7% capacity reduction compared to 9.4% for Cd(II). Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Combined XRD, FTIR, XPS, and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed that metal immobilization was governed by complexation with oxygen- and sulfur-containing groups, surface precipitation (Pb₂(SO₄)O and Cd(OH)₂), and electrostatic attraction. DFT calculations further demonstrated stronger Pb–S interactions, explaining preferential Pb(II) adsorption. The composite maintained high stability after five regeneration cycles, and key scientific challenges and future innovation pathways are summarized to guide practical application. This work provides a rational strategy for designing selective LDH-based composites for heavy-metal remediation.

Rapid and efficient removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution in a wide range pH by sodalite type sorbents using cellulose superfine fiber as a template agent

Shanshan He,Shengle Kang,Lan Zhang,Xiang Dong,Yan Zhao,Fangfang Li,Qihong Cen

Sodalite is a common zeolite , which is often discarded or ignored due to its small pore size and poor adsorption capacity. In this study, two sodalite type materials , CSF-S and N-CSF-S, were synthesized using cellulose superfine fiber (CSF) as template. Its unique scaly structure not only enhances its adsorption capacity for Cd (II), but also improves its adsorption efficiency. At 298 K and the initial Cd (II) concentration of 100 mg/L, the adsorption equilibrium of CSF-S was achieved within 30 min, which is 98% shorter than that of traditional sodalite. The adsorption of Cd (II) by CSF-S and N-CSF-S is an endothermic process and at 298 K the adsorption capacity could be as high as 260.1 and 284.1 mg/L, respectively, which were 1.9 and 2.0 times of the original sodalite, far higher than the reported similar adsorbents, and competitive to over other types of adsorbents. In addition, with low zero points of charge CSF-S (pH zpc around 1) and N-CSF-S (pH zpc around 3) can effectively remove Cd(II) over a wide pH range, superior to most zeolitic sorbent materials. Therefore, this work proposes a simple and cost-effective synthesis method for the sodalite type sorbents with high Cd(II) adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, and also provides some basis for the study of heavy metal adsorption materials in aqueous systems.

Facile and green fabrication of electrochemical sensor based on poly(glutamic acid) and carboxylated carbon nanosheets for the sensitive simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Wei Shou-lian,Yan Liang-jie,Huang Xiang-jin,Li Jian-wen,Yao Su,Zhang Hua-sheng,Xu Ai-zhen

This work describes the development of a simple, effective, and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with carboxylated carbon nanosheets (cCNSs) and poly(glutamic acid) (PGA) for the simultaneous detection of trace amount of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The cCNSs were introduced to increase the effective surface area and electron transport efficiency of the sensor, while PGA acting as a capturer could capture target metal ions and eventually enhance the selectivity and sensitivity in the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II). The designed sensor showed a linear range of 1.0–100.0 μg/L for both metal ions, with detection limits (S/ N  = 3) of 0.13 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.15 μg/L for Pb(II), respectively. The sensor was applied to the simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in the water and rice samples, and the results were in good agreement with those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). It also gave excellent performance with regard to its selectivity, recovery, stability, and reproducibility.

A ratiometric electrochemical sensor for multiplex detection of cancer biomarkers using bismuth as an internal reference and metal sulfide nanoparticles as signal tags

Lei Yu,Xin Cui,Huijuan Li,Jianjun Lu,Qi Kang,Dazhong Shen

Ratiometric electrochemical sensors can provide a relatively accurate analysis of target analytes due to their self-calibration function. Herein, we report a simple ratiometric strategy for achieving the electrochemical detection of Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II), as well as multiple cancer biomarkers by using metal sulfide nanoparticles as signal tags. A conductive polymer film of poly(2-amino terephthalic acid) (ATA) was electrochemically produced on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA). Using Bi(III) as an enhancer and internal reference in anodic stripping voltammetry, the MSA-CNT-ATA/GCE exhibited sensitive and distinguishable voltammetric responses to Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II), with detection limits of 0.13, 0.49, 0.16 and 0.089 μg L−1, respectively. By using CdS, HgS, PbS and ZnS labeled secondary antibodies as the signal tags, alpha-fetoprotein, carbohydrate antigen 19–9, carbohydrate antigen 125, and carcinoembryonic antigen were determined simultaneously according to the amounts of metal sulfide in the sandwich-type complexes, with detection limits of 0.11 pg mL−1, 0.68 mU mL−1, 1.4 mU mL−1 and 0.23 pg mL−1, respectively. This ratiometric approach has a wide scope in the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions as well as immunoassays with metal ions serving as signal tags.
