One-Pot Synthesis of CdS and Ni-Doped CdS Hollow Spheres with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Durability

Man Luo,Yong Liu,Juncheng Hu,Hang Liu,Jinlin Li

CdS and Ni-doped CdS hollow spheres were synthesized via a simple template-free one-pot method. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The formation mechanism for the Ni-doped CdS hollow spheres was discussed. The prepared CdS and Ni-doped CdS hollow spheres showed the superior photocatalytic activity for the degradation of RhB under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation, and 1.2 mol % Ni-doped CdS hollow spheres were found to be highly efficient for organic pollutants RhB and phenol removal. Moreover, this catalyst showed improved stability, and the activity did not decrease significantly after four recycles. The unique hollow spheres structure may favor the harvesting of exciting light due to multiple scattering within the interior space, and the doping of Ni2+ may facilitate the generation of electrons and holes pairs and inhibit their recombination rate by act as a temporary trapping sites of photoinduced electrons.

Self-Powered Perovskite/CdS Heterostructure Photodetectors

Zibo Li,Henan Li,Ke Jiang,Dong Ding,Jieni Li,Chun Ma,Shangchi Jiang,Ye Wang,Thomas D. Anthopoulos,Yumeng Shi

Methylammonium lead halide perovskites have gained a lot of attention because of their remarkable physical properties and potential for numerous (opto)electronic applications. Here, high-performance photodetectors based on CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3)/CdS heterostructures are demonstrated. The resulting self-powered MAPbI3/CdS photodetectors show excellent operating characteristics including a maximum detectivity of 2.3 × 1011 Jones with a responsivity of 0.43 A/W measured at 730 nm. A temporal response time of less than 14 ms was achieved. The mechanisms of charge separation and transport at the interface of the MAPbI3/CdS junction were investigated via conductive atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoconductive AFM. Obtained results show that grain boundaries exhibit higher photocurrent than flat regions of the top perovskite layer, which indicates that excitons preferentially separate at the grain boundaries of the perovskite thin film, that is, at the edges of the MAPbI3 crystals. The study of the photoelectric mechanism at the nanoscale suggests the device performance could potentially be fine-tuned through grain boundary engineering, which provides essential insights for the fabrication of the high-performance photodetector. The demonstrated self-powered photodetector is promising for numerous applications in low-energy consumption optoelectronic devices.

Comparing defect-assisted interfacial charge transfer in CdS/PSA and CdS/TiO2NTAs nanoheterojunctions for enhanced photodegradation and biosensing

Zhufeng Shao,Yonglong Zhang,Jianyong Cheng,Libin Shi,Xiujuan Yang,Xiaoming Xiu

Firstly, oxygen vacancy defects are intentionally introduced in the preparation process of TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TiO 2 -NTAs) and porous silicon arrays (PSA) films through the anodic oxidation method after annealing treatment, as expected. Then, CdS/TiO 2 -NTAs and CdS/PSA heterostructures are successfully fabricated using the electrodeposition method, incorporating abundant surface vacancy defects. The crafted CdS/TiO 2 -NTAs nanoheterojunctions presented elevated photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances and sensing activities compared with that of CdS/PSA, validating by photodegradation and PEC biosensing tests, which mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect between the promoted carriers separation efficiency and boosted surface active sites induced by vacancies defects. Furthermore, a comparative and comprehensive interfacial charge transfer mechanism and qualitative dynamic processes for CdS/TiO 2 -NTAs and CdS/PSA type-II nanoheterojunctions are proposed, revealing an enlarged staggered band offset between CdS and TiO 2 -NTAs. The evaluation of this band offset was conducted using nanosecond time-resolved transient photoluminescence and steady photoluminescence spectra, respectively. Following this scheme, the photodegradation rate for CdS/TiO 2 -NTAs nanocomplex toward degradation of MO was 92.8% and 1.06 times than that of CdS/PSA; while the PEC biosensing performance for CdS/TiO 2 -NTAs showed a detection range 0 – 600 μM and limit of detection of 2.3 μM, with a sensitivity of 456 mA cm −2 M −1 .

A Chemiluminescence Method Based on Cl, S, N Co-Doped Carbon Dots for the Rapid Determination of Folic Acid in Foods

Jiaoyan Xie,Suqin Han

Folic acid (FA) is a crucial B vitamin for cell formation and maintenance, and its deficiency can lead to severe health disorders, highlighting the importance for accurate FA detection. Chemiluminescence (CL) provides a highly sensitive analytical approach, characterized by simple instrumentation, high accuracy, and low background interference. However, traditional CL techniques are often limited by weak signal intensity and poor robustness. This study presents a novel CL system using well-defined fluorescent Cl, S, N co-doped carbon dots (ClSN-CDs) integrated into the H 2 O 2 -KBrO 3 system. Under acidic conditions, the synergistic effect of H 2 O 2 and KBrO 3 induced ClSN-CDs to emit a strong CL signal, with the emitting species identified as excited-state ClSN-CDs. Trace amounts of FA significantly quenched the CL intensity of the ClSN-CDs-H 2 O 2 -KBrO 3 system, enabling rapid, sensitive, and selective FA detection. The system demonstrated a linear response to FA concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 1.0 μM, with a detection limit of 3.1 nM. Selectivity and recovery studies validated the system's robust analytical performance. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the CL reaction involved reactive oxygen species (ROS), and FA-mediated ROS consumption led to luminescence suppression.

Shape-controlled synthesis of protein-conjugated CdS nanocrystals (NCs) and study on the binding of Cd2+/CdS to trypsin

Qin Dezhi,Wang Li,Wang Yabo,Du Xian,Zhang Li,Zhang Qiuxia,He Bingyu

Protein-conjugated CdS nanocrystals (NCs) with different morphology have been synthesized under biomimetic condition using trypsin as capping agent in aqueous medium. The reaction parameters including concentration of trypsin, pH value, reaction time, and temperature have a major influence on the morphology and optical property of CdS NCs. XRD, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), TEM, HRTEM, and EDS characterizations were used to investigate the structure, composition, morphology, and size of as-prepared products. The binding reaction between Cd 2+ /CdS and trypsin was investigated systematically through various spectroscopic methods. UV-vis, FT-IR, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and conductivity analysis of Cd 2+ -trypsin suggest that Cd 2+ ions could coordinate with the functional groups of trypsin and induce the formation of unfolding and loosening structure in protein molecules, and the change of protein conformation was also verified by circular dichroism (CD) spectra. This interaction increased local supersaturation of Cd 2+ ions around the groups of trypsin and reduced the nucleation activation energy of CdS nuclei, which favored heterogeneous nucleation in trypsin matrix and resulted in the formation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials. The functional integrity of the enzyme conjugated to CdS NCs was studied by monitoring the enzymatic activity of CdS-trypsin conjugates. The fluorescence of CdS NCs is dependent strongly on trypsin which passivates the surface of NCs.

One-Pot Synthesis of Size-Controllable Core–Shell CdS and Derived CdS@ZnxCd1−xS Structures for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Shuangshuang Kai,Baojuan Xi,Yifeng Wang,Shenglin Xiong

Graphical Monodisperse submicrospheres : A one-pot method was developed for the preparation of monodisperse submicrospheres of core–shell CdS and its core–double shell derivative CdS@Zn x Cd 1− x S. Owing to its special semiconductor heterojunction, CdS@Zn x Cd 1− x S shows remarkably improved activity for H 2 evolution in comparison to bare CdS under visible-light irradiation (see figure). Chalcogenide micro/nanocomposite structures have been attracting worldwide attention due to prospective applications in photocatalytic hydrogen production. Well-defined micro/nanostructures with pronounced properties are of extraordinary importance. Herein, a facile one-pot method for the synthesis of monodisperse, size-controllable CdS core–shell and CdS@Zn x Cd 1− x S core–double shell submicrospheres, which were engineered with respect to structure and size, is reported. CdS core–shell submicrospheres with different sizes were selectively prepared for the first time. The growth mechanism was investigated in detail by monitoring the time-dependent morphology of intermediates by TEM. By introduction of a zinc precursor in the synthetic system, CdS@Zn x Cd 1− x S core–double shell submicrospheres were obtained by cation exchange of CdS with zinc ions, with a process of diffusion of CdS towards the outside and transformation of Zn x Cd 1− x S crystallites. The H 2 evolution rate over CdS@Cd x Zn 1− x S (5.17 mmol h −1 g −1 ) is 12.3 times that of CdS core–shell structures (0.42 mmol h −1 g −1 ) under visible light, owing to the efficient charge separation, as demonstrated by electrochemical impedance and transient-state time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, CdS@Zn x Cd 1− x S core–double shell structures exhibited excellent stability over 20 h of hydrogen production.

Determination of Trace Water Using Fluorescence Probes Based on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dot Fluorescence Senors (Y-CDs and R-CDs)

Chunyan Yang,Qin Yang,Lei Chen,Nan Xu,Fubin Chen,Ting Pu

Graphical N-doped yellow fluorescent carbon quantum dots (Y-CDs) and red fluorescent carbon quantum dots were prepared by reacting o-phenylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine with terephthalic acid using solvothermal method. The emission wavelengths of Y-CDs and R-CDs are located at 530 nm and 600 nm, respectively. These two types of carbon dots can quench water in organic solvents and determine the content of water in them. In this work, we reported two nitrogen doped carbon quantum dot fluorescence sensors (Y-CDs and R-CDs) with good stability and luminescence efficiency, which can be quickly, sensitively and low-cost for the determination of trace water content in organic solvents. Using o-phenylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine as nitrogen sources and terephthalic acid as carbon sources, the preparation was carried out through simple solvothermal synthesis and heteroatom doping. The luminescence characteristics and interaction mechanism with the target were discussed. The results indicate that the two carbon dots can effectively quench the water content in acetone, ethanol, and DMF, as well as physical interactions such as hydrogen bonding and dynamic quenching, which are the reasons for the observed quenching effect. Based on this, a new method for determining water content in organic solvents using carbon quantum dot fluorescence probes has been established. The linear relationship between the fluorescence quenching efficiency F 0 /F of two carbon quantum dots and the water content in different organic solvents was studied. The detection limits (LOD) of water in acetone, ethanol and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were 0.17 %, 2.35 %, 0.26 %, respectively, determined by Y-CDs. The LOQ of acetone, ethanol, and DMF were 0.554 %, 7.83 %, 0.855 %, respectively. The LOD of water in acetone, ethanol and DMF determined by R-CDs were 0.056 %, 0.69 %, 0.27 % and the LOQ was 0.187 %, 2.290 %, 0.909 %, respectively. Good recovery rates and precision were achieved in practical applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polyrotaxanes Comprising γ-CDs and Distal Azide-Terminated PHEMA Using Propargylamine Monosubstituted β-CDs as End Stoppers

Ming Gao,Hang Lu,Rong-Hao Song,Lin Ye,Ai-Ying Zhang,Zeng-Guo Feng

To highlight whether γ-cyclodextrins (CDs) facilitate propargylamine monosubstituted β-CDs (PA-β-CDs) as end stoppers to get threaded onto a distal azide terminated poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (PHEMA) homopolymer (PH-46-2N 3 ) to create linear and hyperbranched polyrotaxanes (PRs) via the in situ copper-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), PH-46-2N 3 is self-assembled with a varying amount of γ-CDs in water and then subjected the CuAAC with PA-β-CDs to end-cap the resulting γ-CD-PHEMA polypseudorotaxanes (PPRs) into the γ-CD-PHEMA PRs. It demonstrates that γ-CDs cannot promote PA-β-CDs to be entrapped on the PHEMA chain most likely due to their different cavity size and molecular framework and linear PRs are always formed with up to 29% γ-CD coverage ratio along the PHEMA axis thereof.

Improved photocatalytic activity of CdS/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for H2 evolution by strengthening the connection between CdS and RGO sheets

Yuanchen Hong,Penghui Shi,Peifu Wang,Weifeng Yao

CdS were synthesised in situ on graphene oxide (GO) using a simple solvothermal method . GO in the prepared powders was then photoreduced into RGO to form the CdS/GO composites. The samples were characterised by using the X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence spectrum and Raman spectrum . The prepared CdS/RGO exhibited much higher activity for H 2 evolution than CdS or CdS mechanically loaded with GO under visible light irradiation (>420 nm). The improved photocatalyst performance of CdS/RGO was attributed to enhancement of the connection between CdS and RGO sheets, which accelerates the effect of the separation of photoinduced electrons and holes by transferring the photoinduced electron to RGO sheets.

GO/CdS Heterojunctions for Accelerated Photocatalytic Antibiotic Degradation

Yutao Zhou,Kun Liu,Shuting Zhuang,Yunsong Mu

The widespread detection of antibiotics in aquatic environments has raised significant concerns due to their potential risks to human health. Photocatalytic technology has emerged as an effective approach for antibiotic degradation, with cadmium sulfide (CdS) being a promising semiconductor photocatalyst. However, the practical application of CdS is limited by its tendency to aggregate, which reduces the number of accessible active sites and consequently lowers its photocatalytic degradation efficiency. In this study, a series of GO/CdS composites were synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method for the efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics in aquatic solutions. Results showed that GO/CdS can effectively remove TC via photocatalytic degradation rather than adsorption. The optimized photocatalytic composite achieved a 95% degradation of TC (20 mg L−1) under 60 min of illumination. The corresponding rate constant (k) was 2.87 times higher than that of pristine CdS. After three cycles, the degradation rate still achieved 93%. Moreover, the composite exhibited a wide pH tolerance range from pH 2 to 10, with a removal rate of over 89%. Superoxide radicals (·O2−) were identified as the primary reactive species responsible for TC degradation, and three possible TC degradation pathways were proposed. This work extends the application of GO and offers a novel strategy for constructing GO-based composite materials, providing valuable insights into the mechanisms and pathways of antibiotic degradation.

Dual-functional photoredox catalysis over Ni/CdS composite

Hui-Li Wu,Jia-Wei Liu,Chang-Long Tan,Zi-Rong Tang

Selective photocatalytic dehydrogenation of saturated N-heterocycles represents a sustainable photoredox route for synthesizing valuable nitrogen-containing unsaturated heteroaromatic organics. Herein, we report a Ni-decorated 3D sea urchin-like CdS composite (Ni/CdS) as a dual-functional photocatalyst for the efficient and selective semi-dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) to 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (DHIQ) coupled with H 2 evolution under visible light irradiation. The surface-decorated Ni nanoparticles significantly enhance the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs over Ni/CdS, and act as reactive sites for proton reduction to H 2 , thereby leading to the improved dual-functional photoredox catalysis. Mechanistic studies identify the carbon-centered radical (•CH(NH)C 8 H 8 ) as a pivotal intermediate in the photocatalytic semi-dehydrogenation of THIQ. This study establishes an effective strategy for designing noble-metal-free photocatalytic systems that integrate selective organic transformations with H 2 evolution in a cooperative manner.

Inducing photocarrier separation via 3D porous faveolate cross-linked carbon to enhance photothermal/pyroelectric property

Meng Li,Jingxue Sun,Gang Chen,Shuang Wang,Shunyu Yao

The CdS/Bi 2 S 3 supported three-dimensional (3D) porous faveolate carbon structure (CdS/Bi 2 S 3 @C) composite photocatalyst was constructed. Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles are regarded as photothermal agents and pyroelectric materials to absorb near infrared light (NIR) and convert it into heat. 3D porous faveolate of carbon acts as incubator to reduce heat loss and optimize photothermal effects. There is a greater fluctuating temperature difference (Δ Τ ) between photothermal effect of Bi 2 S 3 and cold photocatalytic system. This enhances the pyroelectric effect that Bi 2 S 3 undergoes spontaneous polarization and releases the surface charge. Therefore, the separation of electrons and holes in the CdS photocatalyst can be induced. The COMSOL simulation results show that, the higher pyroelectric potential producted by larger Δ Τ is more favorable to the photocatalytic process. The hydrogen evolution rate of CdS/Bi 2 S 3 @C photocatalyst can reach 5.88 mmol·g − 1 ·h −1 with excellent cycle stability.
