Constructing hollow nanocages of Co3O4-CoMoO4 heterostructure for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Jiabing Luo,Xingzhao Wang,Yufeng Gu,Dong Wang,Shutao Wang,Wenle Li,Yan Zhou,Jun Zhang

Hollow nanocages composed of heterostructures play an important role in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their high electrocatalytic activity induced by the interfacial polarization within the interface of the heterostructure. In this work, ZIF-67 was used to synthesize Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 hollow nanocages (Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 HNC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images verify that Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 HNC was composed of Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 heterostructures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) characterizations show that the Mo 3d peaks of Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 are located at lower binding energy compared with CoMoO 4 , indicating charge transfer between Co 3 O 4 and CoMoO 4 . The electrochemical studies show that Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 HNC exhibited excellent OER activity in an alkaline medium with only 248 mV overpotential required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 HNC was tested as the anode material in a homemade water-splitting device to produce oxygen. The Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 HNC‖20 % Pt/C electrolytic cell shows equivalent performance to RuO 2 ‖20 % Pt/C cell at 50 °C. The excellent OER performance of Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 HNC is attributed to the interfacial charge transfer between Co 3 O 4 and CoMoO 4 which promote the adsorption of OH − . Besides, the hollow nanocage structures provide a large surface area, leading to more active sites for OER.

Design of ZIF-67 MOF-derived Co3O4/NiCo2O4 nanosheets for supercapacitor electrode materials

Jianning Li,Chunyong Zhang,Yingpin Wen,Yuyue Zhao,Yiwen Zhang,Li Shu,Hengfei Qin

Binary transition metal oxides exhibit improved properties including good redox potentials and electrical conductivities compared with single metal oxides as electrode materials in energy storage. Herein, ZIF-67 is prepared by a one-step method using Co2+ as the central metal ion, 2-methylimidazole as the organic ligand, and methanol as an organic solvent at room temperature. Hollow NiCo2O4 and sheet-like Co3O4/NiCo2O4 derived from bimetallic imidazolate framework precursors were synthesized by adding cobalt and nickel ions in appropriate proportions. A hollow and porous structure is achieved for the reaction between a nickel salt and ZIF-67, and this unique nanostructure provides a high active surface area, which is beneficial to the electrochemical properties. Several samples are prepared and used as electrode materials for electrochemical tests in 6 M KOH. As a result, the Co3O4/NiCo2O4 electrode with a sheet nanostructure showed a high specific capacitance of 846 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. This Co3O4/NiCo2O4 electrode material is promising for future studies on high-performance supercapacitors to solve emerging energy-related problems.

Self-templated fabrication of CoMoO4-Co3O4 hollow nanocages for efficient aerobic oxidative desulfurization

Junzhen Guo,Liang Chu,Liyan Wang,Huiyang Liu,Mu Yang,Ge Wang

The oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is a promising industrial technology of environmental protection, and developing effective catalysts for aerobic oxidation desulfurization (AODS) has attracted much attention. In this work, composite CoMoO 4 -Co 3 O 4 hollow nanocages (CoMoO HNCs) are synthesized using a novel self-template strategy with ZIF-67 as the sacrificial template, and they show a superior ODS performance to eliminate the dibenzothiophene (DBT) completely at 110 °C in 1 h, O 2 in air as the oxidant. The outstanding ODS activity is the outcome of large specific surface area (221.3 m 2 g −1 ), high dispersed molybdenum active centers, causing more Mo to react with DBT in oil. The ODS mechanism of Mo-peroxo species based on O 2 is proposed. Additionally, CoMoO HNCs catalysts can be easily separated by centrifuged and show excellent recycled stability. This work provides a valuable method for designing cost-effective Mo-based bimetal oxides catalysts with outstanding ODS performance for industrial applications.

Co3O4/Mn3O4 hybrid catalysts with heterointerfaces as bifunctional catalysts for Zn-air batteries

Qikai Huang,Xiongwei Zhong,Qi Zhang,Xin Wu,Miaolun Jiao,Biao Chen,Jinzhi Sheng,Guangmin Zhou

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with high energy density and safety are promising as next-generation energy storage systems, while their applications are severely hindered by the sluggish reaction kinetic of air cathodes. Developing a bifunctional catalyst with high activity and durability is an effective strategy to address the above challenges. Herein, a Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 nanohybrid with heterointerfaces is designed as advanced cathode catalyst for ZABs. Density functional theory calculations show the heterogeneous interface between Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 can improve the dynamics of carrier transport and thus enhancing the catalytic activity and durability. The Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 catalyst anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) exhibits high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with a half-wave potential of 0.86 V, and excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with the potential of 1.59 V at 10 mA cm −2 , which are comparable to the commercial noble metal catalysts. The improved ORR/OER catalytic activity is ascribed to the synergistic effect of heterointerfaces between Co 3 O 4 and Mn 3 O 4 as well as the improved conductivity and contact area of oxygen/catalysts/electrolytes three-phase interface by rGO. Furthermore, a home-made ZAB based on Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 /rGO shows a high open circuit voltage of 1.54 V, a large power density of 194.6 mW cm −2 and good long-term cycling stability of nearly 400 h at 5 mA cm −2 , which affords a promising bifunctional oxygen catalyst for rechargeable ZABs.

Jin-Cheng Shu,Si-Qi Zhu,Wen-Qiang Cao,Mao-Sheng Cao

A multi-functional electromagnetic (EM) device is an important pillar for promoting the progress of an intelligent society. Herein, a ZIF-67 nanoneedle array assembled on a nickel substrate is used as a precursor to construct a C/Co3O4 nanoarray via a simple thermal treatment approach, integrating the two functions of EM and thermal shielding. Its unique three-dimensional porous structure and integrated components endow this material with an average shielding efficiency of 99.62% and a maximum temperature difference of about 25 K. In addition, this skeleton structure features light weight, low density and small cost, which can be utilized to construct wearable devices to protect human beings from EM and thermal radiation. This study furnishes a novel horizon for the design and construction of multi-functional and wearable EM devices, and promotes the development of the EM field and the progress of multi-disciplinary technologies.

MOF-Derived Porous Hollow Co3O4@ZnO Cages for High-Performance MEMS Trimethylamine Sensors

Wenjun Yan,Huoshu Xu,Min Ling,Shiyu Zhou,Tong Qiu,Yanjun Deng,Zhidong Zhao,Erpan Zhang

Trimethylamine (TMA) sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have drawn great attention for real-time seafood quality evaluation. However, poor selectivity and baseline drift limit the practical applications of MOS TMA sensors. Engineering core@shell heterojunction structures with accumulation and depletion layers formed at the interface is regarded as an appealing way for enhanced gas sensing performances. Herein, we design porous hollow Co3O4@ZnO cages via a facile ZIF-67@ZIF-8-derived approach for TMA sensors. These sensors demonstrate great TMA resistive sensing performance (linear response at moderate TMA concentrations (<33 ppm)), and a high sensitivity of ∼41 is observed when exposed to 33 ppm TMA, with a response/recovery time of only 3/2 s. This superior performance benefits from the Co3O4@ZnO porous hollow structure with maximum heterojunctions and high surface area. Furthermore, great capacitive TMA sensing with linear sensitivity over the full testing concentration range (0.33–66 ppm) and better baseline stability were investigated. A possible capacitive sensing mechanism of TMA polarization was proposed. For practical usage, a portable sensing prototype based on the Co3O4@ZnO sensor was fabricated, and its satisfactory sensing behavior further confirms the potential for real-time TMA detection.

Imidazolate-mediated synthesis of hierarchical flower-like Co3O4 for the oxidation of toluene

Huimin Niu,Zhiruo Wu,Zhong-ting Hu,Jinghuan Chen

Cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) materials with specific structure have shown great potential as highly efficient catalysts in the oxidation reactions. In this work, a novel hierarchical flower-like Co 3 O 4 was synthesized by the imidazolate-induced hydrothermal and subsequent thermolysis method. The effect of reaction parameters as well as the phase evolution of the flower-like structure was investigated in detail. For comparison, a rod-like Co 3 O 4 was also prepared with urea under similar conditions. The morphology-dependent effect of Co 3 O 4 towards toluene oxidation was studied. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of Co 3 O 4 were analyzed by various characterization techniques. The flower-like Co 3 O 4 catalyst presented a higher catalytic activity for toluene oxidation than the rod-like Co 3 O 4 , which was associated with hierarchical flower-like morphology, reactive exposed planes, abundant adsorbed oxygen species at surface and better low-temperature reducibility.

Synthesis of ultrathin porous C3N4-modified Co3O4 nanosheets for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Huan Wang,Yanming Liu,Zhonghua Sun,Jianhai Ren,Xiaoran Zou,Chun-Yang Zhang

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays important roles in energy storage and conversion technologies, but the sluggish kinetics of OER may result in a large overpotential, and thus there is urgent need for the exploration of new electrocatalysts with a low overpotential and good stability. In this research, we integrate the melamine-assisted alkaline cobalt carbonate (CoCH) nanosheets pyrolysis with high-temperature solid phase fusion to construct the 1-C 3 N 4 /Co 3 O 4 /Ni foam hybrid electrode with Co 3 O 4 ultrathin porous nanosheets as the host, trace C 3 N 4 as the guest, and Ni foam (NF) as the current collector. Benefiting from the unique structure, the obtained 1-C 3 N 4 /Co 3 O 4 hybrid nanosheets can significantly reduce the charge transfer distance between the catalysts to electron collector and improve the electron transportation during the OER process. Moreover, the intimate interaction of Co 3 O 4 with C 3 N 4 can induce a charge redistribution at the interface. Consequently, the 1-C 3 N 4 /Co 3 O 4 /NF hybrid electrode exhibits an enhanced OER performance (166 mV at 10 mA•cm −2 ) and good stability, superior to the commercial RuO 2 particles and the reported transition metal-based electrocatalysts.

Fabrication of methane thermoelectric gas sensor based on 3D porous Pd/Co3O4 catalyst

Li Sun,Chuanliang Li,Hua Zhang,Binlin Dou,Wenxian Su,Lixin Zhang

BACKGROUND At present, much attention has been focused on the development of methane (CH 4 ) sensors due to a series of explosions and fires caused by CH 4 gas leakage. RESULTS Here, a CH 4 thermoelectric gas sensor (TGS) was fabricated by fixing 3D porous palladium/cobalt oxide (Pd/Co 3 O 4 ) catalyst on a commercial thermoelectric module. 3D porous Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation and gel-casting method. The pore structure in catalysts could be tailored only by adjusting the gel viscosity during the formation process. The protocol to tune the pore structure is facile and effective for the improvement of the activity of catalysts. By means of various techniques, the catalysts were characterized and then the possible catalytic mechanism was revealed. The CH 4 TGS based on the optimal Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalyst began to respond at 200 °C, following an obvious output voltage (Δ V ) of 5 mV. Enhancing the operating temperature to 240 °C, the value of Δ V reached to 31 mV and exhibited a linear relationship with CH 4 gas concentration. Meanwhile, the CH 4 TGS showed high sensitivity, repeatability and stability. CONCLUSION The easy and effective preparation method presented to prepare 3D porous Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalyst can provide an unique perspective on the development of 3D porous materials with excellent properties. It can be anticipated that the CH 4 TGS based on the 3D porous Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalyst will be a potential candidate for the detection of CH 4 gas in industrial settings. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

High temperature Mn2O3/Mn3O4 and Co3O4/CoO systems for thermo-chemical energy storage

Jia Liu,Jan Baeyens,Yimin Deng,Xianlu Wang,Huili Zhang

A major action to reduce CO 2 emissions is replacing fossil fuels by renewable energy sources . Matching the energy supply and demand by the mostly intermittent renewable resources (wind, solar, wave) is hence a hot topic, and energy storage has become crucial. Thermo-chemical energy storage (TCES) has a higher energy density than sensible and latent heat storage , and allows energy to be stored in the reaction products for multiple reuse and even off-site application. Design parameters are the equilibrium temperature , the reaction heat and the reaction rate, as obtained from both thermodynamic and kinetic assessments. Equilibrium temperatures of the selected metal oxides , Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 /CoO are between 1115 K and 1179 K. The present research studies both redox reactions as examples. Commercial Mn 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 were previously investigated in detail, and suffer from incomplete reversibility . The present study investigates the use of self-made Mn 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 mesoporous particles, of micrometer or nanometer scale, respectively. The average particle size of self-made Mn 2 O 3 particles is < 5 μm, with a BET surface area of 239.7 m 2 /g, and T eq of 1177 K at ambient pressure . Self-made Co 3 O 4 was of nano size, with average size of about 100 nm, a BET surface area of 54.2 m 2 /g, and T eq of 1109 K at ambient pressure. The redox reactions of these ultrafine particles are fast and nearly fully reversible. The effect of adding inert Al 2 O 3 or Fe 2 O 3 was also studied, but proven to offer no kinetic benefit, while reducing the reaction heat due to their inert additive character. The findings were used in the design of a 10 kW TCES pilot plant that is currently being tested in a concentrated solar furnace .

Effect of Residual Chlorine on the Catalytic Performance of Co3O4 for CO Oxidation

Muhong Li,Feifei Bi,Yida Xu,Panpan Hao,Kun Xiang,Yu Zhang,Shanyong Chen,Jia Guo,Xuefeng Guo,Weiping Ding

An oxide catalyst plays an important role in environmental catalysis. Metal chlorides are widely used as precursors in the preparation of oxide catalysts. However, residual chlorine usually influences the performance of catalysts. In this work, we systematically investigate the influence and efficient removal of chlorine residue on the Co3O4 catalyst in CO oxidation by control experiments and related characterizations. Compared to the cobalt nitrate-derived catalyst, the cobalt chloride-derived Co3O4 catalyst shows a significant improvement in catalytic activity after being washed with water, suggesting that residual chlorine exerts a detrimental effect on the Co3O4 catalyst in CO oxidation. Further investigations show that residual chlorine inhibits the activity of surface oxygen species as well as blocks the active sites. It is noteworthy that residual chlorine cannot be efficiently removed before the calcination because of the strong interactions between the chloride anions and cobalt precursor. In addition, the washed chloride-derived catalyst even shows a better catalytic performance than the nitrate-derived one because of more active sites that are exposed on the surface with the removal of residual chlorine. More importantly, most of the commercial Co3O4 samples are found to be seriously poisoned by chlorine. Hence, efficient elimination of residual chlorine is very important and should be undertaken before the use of catalysts in the case of using chlorides as precursors.

Oxygen vacancies enriched Co3O4 nanoflowers with single layer porous structures for water splitting

Jian Du,Chao Li,Qunwei Tang

Vacancy enriched electrocatalysts are crucial in enhancing the catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through a defect engineering. Herein, oxygen vacancies enriched Co 3 O 4 nanoflowers with single layer porous structures are made to study their catalytic activity toward water splitting. The as-synthesized defects enriched Co 3 O 4 presents flowers-like nanostructures and possesses high specific surface area (84 m 2  g −1 ) with uniform pore size (4 nm). On behalf of the unique morphology and electronic structure, the Co 3 O 4 nanoflowers display enhanced HER and OER performances compared with commercial Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (∼50 nm). In addition, it still presents good catalytic without remarkably decay in potential over 9 days.
