Aminopolycarboxylic acids (APAs) show a strong affinity toward heavy metal species, but straightforward and robust studies on the surface of porous adsorbents with APAs are rarely available. In this study, branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) is directly used to investigate the surface of a microcrystalline cellulose (MC)-supported porous monolith (MC@PEI) through an oil-in-water high internal phase emulsion technique. The residual amines of the covalently immobilized PEI are transformed into dense APAs (MC@PEI-APA). The open-cellular MC@PEI-APA monolith can effectively eliminate trace Cu(II) or Zn(II) from water relative to MC@PEI. Moreover, its adsorption complies with the second-order kinetics and follows the Langmuir adsorption model. MC@PEI-APA shows high adsorption capacities (e.g., 96 mg g −1 for Cu(II)). It also presents stronger metal affinities than the commercial Amberlite IRC-748 adsorbent possibly because of the cooperative ligation of metal species by the relatively dense APA groups of MC@PEI-APA. The proposed adsorbent is durable and has good recyclability.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal porphyrin frameworks (MPFs) with a π-conjugated skeleton, high surface area, and more accessible active sites have been applied as active materials for supercapacitors, but the poor electrical conductivity limits the enhancement of electrochemical performance. Moreover, MPF-based flexible supercapacitors have been rarely reported. Here, for the first time, we fabricated wrinkled 2D ultrathin 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxylphenyl)porphyrin copper(II) (Cu-TCPP) nanosheets through the surfactant-assisted synthetic method. The as-obtained wrinkled Cu-TCPP nanosheets were further composited with conductive polypyrrole (PPy) to construct a flexible Cu-TCPP/PPy film through the combination of the electrophoretic deposition method and electrochemical polymerization technology. The wrinkled 2D ultrathin Cu-TCPP nanosheets not only offer macroporous channels for fast ion/electron transport, but also effectively reduce the transmission path of electrolyte ions. The PPy affords 3D conductive networks for rapid electron transport and enhances the electrochemical kinetics. The synergistic effect of Cu-TCPP and PPy leads to the enhanced supercapacitive performance of Cu-TCPP/PPy in comparison with the individual components. As a result, the freestanding Cu-TCPP/PPy electrode shows a capacitance of 340.6 mF cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, 71.14 F cm−3 at 0.1 A cm−3, and 163.34 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, more than 45% greater than that of the pristine PPy film of 224.6 mF cm−2, 48.15 F cm−3 and 92.2 F g−1 at the corresponding current densities. Moreover, the fabricated binder-free symmetric supercapacitor possesses a maximum energy density of 2.27 μW h cm−2 at the highest power density of 50 μW cm−2. This work provides a new strategy to design 2D metal–organic framework-based flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors with high energy storage performances.

A fluorometric assay is described for sulfide ions determination. It is based on the finding that the oxidation of the non-fluorescent substrate thiamine (TH) by Cu(II) in basic solution to form fluorescent thiochrome is inhibited by sulfide ions. This results in a decrease in fluorescence intensity which is proportional to the concentration of sulfide ions. Under the optimized conditions, the decrease in fluorescence, best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 370/440 nm, decreases linearly in the 0.03 to 2.5 μM sulfide ions concentration range. The detection limit is 20 nM. The method shows excellent selectivity over many potentially interfering ions and has been successfully applied to the determination of sulfide ions in spiked tap water, lake water and the synthetic wastewater samples. The method is time-saving and environmentally friendly, and in our perception shows a great potential in water quality inspection and environmental monitoring.
A fluorescent assay for sulfide ions detection is proposed based on its inhibitory effect on the oxidation of thiamine by Cu(II) ions.

Further research into more cost-effective methods to treat toxic metal-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Me-EDTA) complexes is required due to their high bioavailability. In this study, we compared electrodialysis (ED) with different compartment designs (2-, 3- and 4-compartment designs) and electrochemical oxidation (EO, 1-compartment design) to treat a dilute Cu(II)-EDTA solution (1 mM). After a 48-h treatment with a constant current applied at 32 mA, the Cu removal efficiencies were achieved at 49%, 87%, 79% and 96% for 1-compartment EO and 2- to 4-compartment ED, respectively, and the total organic carbon concentrations decreased from 138 mg/L to 100, 64, 57 and 39 mg/L, respectively. The energy consumptions for 1-compartment EO and 2- to 4-compartment ED were 7.7, 8.4, 13.9 and 15.4 W h, respectively. Based on all above results, the most cost-effective design was determined to be the 2-compartment ED. Moreover, the 3- and 4-compartment ED treatments have faster contaminant removal kinetics than 1-compartment EO and 2-compartment ED. This study clarified the mechanisms of the migration and the transformation of Cu-EDTA during EO and ED with different membrane combinations, which is helpful for improved selection of compartment design for metal-chelate complex removal.

In this study, we fabricated a novel anti-fouling poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane using a novel amphiphilic copolymer of PVDF grafted with tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (PVDF-g-THFMA). This copolymer was synthesized via photoinduced Cu(II)-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization . The amphiphilic copolymer was characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . The morphology of the copolymer was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The permeability and hydrophilicity of the membranes were evaluated on the basis of their pure water flux and dynamic contact angles, respectively. The anti-fouling property of the membranes was evaluated by carrying out filtration using a bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. The PVDF-g-THFMA copolymer membranes showed a pure flux of up to 293.9 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and a molecular weight cut off of 39.5 kDa. After the filtration of the BSA solution, the PVDF-g-THFMA copolymer membrane was washed with deionized water and the recovery ratio of the pure water flux reached a value of 89.1%. The modified membrane showed good filtration performance and anti-fouling property.

Graphene oxide nanosheets (GO) were dispersed and crosslinked with a water soluble polymer, namely poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) with high amine density, to prepared a novel PAH-GO composite, which was used for removing Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The physico-chemical properties of PAH-GO composites were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, etc. Adsorption experiments indicated that adsorption process was strongly dependent on pH and temperature, however weakly dependent on ionic strength. The maximum adsorption capacity was about 349.03 mg/g higher than that of currently reported. Competitive adsorption studies for the ternary system suggested that the adsorption of PAH-GO composite for Cu(II) ions was much preferable to Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that adsorptions were endothermic and spontaneous processes. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was applicable fit adsorption process, and adsorption kinetic process could be described by the pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption–desorption results showed that the reusability of PAH-GO composite was encouraging. Based on the results obtained, we conclude that PAH-GO composite can be an effective and potential adsorbent for removing Cu(II) ions from an aqueous solution.

We describe a facile method for the preparation of magnetic microparticles consisting of a metal-organic framework (MOF) of Cu(II)-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) for rapid magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of the dye Congo Red (CR) from aqueous solution. Magnetization of the MOF and solid-phase extraction of CR was simultaneously accomplished by mixing, under ultrasonication, the MOF and silica-coated magnetite microparticles in the solution to be extracted. Under optimized conditions, the magnetic MOF hybrid exhibits a fast adsorption rate and a high removal efficiency (>97 %) toward CR even over 15-fold reuse, which also features high adsorption capacity of 97.7 and 92.5 % for cationinc Methylene Blue (MB) and Crystal Violet (CV), respectively. The desorption of CR from the magnetic MOF was realized by washing it with ethanol and water. The material is considered to be a promising new adsorbent for use in wastewater treatment and in analytical preconcentration.
We report on a method for magnetization of a Cu-BTC metal-organic framework for use in rapid magnetic solid phase extraction of Congo Red from aqueous solutions. The material maintains its high removal efficiency (of >97 %) over 15 recyclable experiments.

A novel nanocomposite based on black wattle (BW) tannin and nanocellulose was prepared and applied in heavy metal ions adsorptive removal from aqueous solutions. Firstly, nanocrystalline cellulose was oxidized by sodium periodate to get dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC). BW tannin was then covalently immobilized onto DANC, which was used as both the matrix and crosslinker, to obtain tannin-nanocellulose (TNCC) composite. The resulting nanocomposite was characterized using FTIR, AFM, and TG. The successful immobilization was confirmed by the chromogenic reaction between FeCl 3 and TNCC and FT-IR analysis. AFM images revealed that TNCC was ellipsoidal particles with lengths ranging from 100–400 nm. Zeta potential measurement showed that TNCC was negative charged at a pH range from 1–12. Compared to the original tannin, the thermal stability of TNCC was slightly increased by the addition of nanocellulose. TNCC demonstrated the maximum adsorption efficiency at pH 2 for Cr(VI) and pH 6 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The adsorption for these three metal ions followed pseudo second-order kinetics, indicating the chemisorption nature. The adsorption isotherms all fitted well with the Sips model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 51.846 mg g −1 , 53.371 mg g −1 and 104.592 mg g −1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr (VI), respectively.

Double-hole optical fiber (DHF) exhibits considerable potential for sensing applications due to its distinctive structural characteristics. In this study, a Sagnac interference (SI) optical fiber sensor based on a corroded DHF shows high refractive index (RI) sensitivity, allowing for the detection of copper ions, Cu(II), at very low concentrations. The dependence of DHF corrosion on the birefringence and RI sensitivity are investigated by the optical simulation. Experimental results illustrate that the RI sensitivity reaches 3267 nm/RIU within the range of 1.3333–1.3743, exhibiting good linearity. A chitosan derivative (CSD) with ion-imprinted (IIM) treatment is coated on the surface of the corroded DHF for Cu(II) detection. It is demonstrated that within the concentration range of Cu(II) from 10 −15 to 10 −6 M, both the maximum and average sensitivities can reach 12.08 × 10 9 and 129.96 nm/μM, respectively, without interference from other metal ions or temperature (25.3–44.0 ℃). The proposed corroded DHF sensor is a good candidate for RI and Cu(II) concentration detection due to its simple structure, high sensitivity, and selectivity.

The microbial manganese removal process is believed to consist of the catalytic oxidation of Mn(II) by manganese oxidase. In this study, the multicopper oxidase CopA was purified and exhibited high manganese oxidation activity in vitro, and it was found that Cu(II) can significantly enhance its manganese oxidation activity. Gene site-directed mutagenesis was used to mutate four conserved copper binding sites of CopA to obtain four mutant strains. The manganese removal efficiencies of the four strains were determined, and it was found that H120 is the catalytically active site of CopA. The loss of Cu(II) and the mutation of the conserved copper binding site H120 resulted in the loss of ethoxyformyl and quinone modifications, a reduction in the number of modifications, and a change in the position of modifications, eventually causing a decrease in protein activity from 85.87% to 70.1%. These results reveal that Cu(II) and H120 play an indispensable role in manganese oxidation by the multicopper oxidase CopA. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicates that biogenic manganese oxides produced by strains and by CopA were both composed of MnO 2 and Mn 3 O 4 and that the average valence of Mn was 3.2.

In this work, tannic acid was selected as a green cross-linking agent to cross-link carboxymethyl chitosan to prepare a magnetic adsorbent (CC-OTA@Fe 3 O 4 ), which was used to remove methylene blue (MB) and Cu 2+ . CC-OTA@Fe 3 O 4 was characterized by FTIR, 13 C NMR, XRD, VSM, TGA, BET and SEM. The adsorption behavior was studied using various parameters such as pH value, contact time, initial concentration of MB and Cu 2+ , and temperature. The results showed that adsorption of MB and Cu 2+ followed the pseudo-second-order model and the Sips model. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 560.92 and 104.25 mg/g MB and Cu 2+ at 298 K, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. According to the results of FTIR and XPS analyses, the electrostatic interaction was accompanied by π–π interaction and hydrogen bonding for MB adsorption, while complexation and electrostatic interaction were the predominant mechanism for Cu 2+ adsorption. Furthermore, CC-OTA@Fe 3 O 4 displayed remarkable stability in 0.1 M HNO 3 , exhibited promising recyclability, and could be easily separated from aqueous solutions in the magnetic field. This study demonstrates the potential of CC-OTA@Fe 3 O 4 as an adsorbent for the removal of cationic dyes and heavy metals from wastewater.

A novel absorbent called mercaptopropionyl wheat straw (MPWS) was prepared through alkali pretreatment and mercaptopropionyl modification for efficient removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. Single factor experiments were conducted to investigate various parameters affecting the adsorption of Cu(II) with MPWS. Adsorption experiments including kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, as well as various characterization methods were employed to discuss the mechanism of Cu(II) uptake by MPWS in this study. The results showed that MPWS exhibited high removal capacity for Cu(II), achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 97.28 % under optimal conditions: oscillation rate at 150 rpm, temperature at 303 K, duration at 2 h, pH value at 6.0, and initial concentration of Cu(II) at 100 mg/L. The fitting results indicated that pseudo-second-order kinetic model better described the experimental data while Freundlich model provided a better fit for isothermal data. Thermodynamic calculations confirmed that the adsorptive process was spontaneous and endothermic. Characterization techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy SEM imaging, and EDS analysis confirmed chemisorption between Cu(II) ions and functional groups present on MPWS including sulfhydryl groups, amine groups, hydroxyl groups, and carboxyl groups. Overall, the main mechanisms governing Cu(II) uptake onto MPWS included coordination, ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption, and physical adsorption.
