Discharged Na5V12O32 Nanowire Arrays Coated with Cu-Cu2O for High Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Guangjie Yang,Mengmeng Cui,Tao Han,Dong Fang,Xingjie Lu,Sui Peng,Olim Ruzimuradov,Jianhong Yi

Sodium vanadate have been widely used as a lithium-ion battery anode. However, its further application is restricted by the capacity attenuation during cycles because of its easy solubility in electrolyte, huge structural change, and low conductivity. Here, a lithium-ion battery electrode based on Cu-Cu2O coated Na5V12O32 nanowire arrays using a predischarge-electrodeposition method is freported. Remarkably, in the Cu-Cu2O@Na5V12O32 electrode, the Na5V12O32 nanowires function as the skeleton, and Cu-Cu2O nanoparticles function as the coating layer. At a specific current of 50 mA g−1, the composite electrode exhibits discharge and charge capacity of 837 and 821 mAh g−1 after 80 cycles, respectively, which is much higher than that of the Na5V12O32 nanowires electrode. This research provides a new pathway to explore electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical performance.

Carbon-Bridged-Mediated Electron Transfer in Cu2O–ZnO Nanocomposites Enabling ROS-Driven Antimicrobial Activity

Sehrish Ibrahim,Wensheng Xie,Xiaofeng Li,Guofeng Li,Xing Wang

Engineering interfacial electronic interactions between physically distinct metal oxides without phase transformation, doping, or lattice fusion remains a central challenge of interface science. Conventional Cu2O–ZnO systems rely on heterojunction formation or compositional mixing, whereas carbon-mediated electronic coupling between discrete phases remains largely unexplored. Here, we report strongly electronically coupled carbon-bridged Cu2O/ZnO nanocomposites (Cu2O–C–ZnO NCs) synthesized by incorporating spherical Cu2O and diamond-shaped ZnO nanoparticles into a gallic-acid-derived carbon framework. Structural and compositional analyses confirm the coexistence of crystalline Cu2O and ZnO interlocked in a homogeneous carbon matrix, with oxygenated carbon functionalities verified spectroscopically. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals binding energy shifts in Cu and Zn core levels, providing direct evidence of interfacial electronic coupling and charge redistribution without lattice fusion or heterojunction formation. This electronic interface coupling helps regulate charge transfer between the oxide materials, allowing the controlled release of metal ions and enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species. As a functional consequence, the NCs exhibit significant antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as substantial antialgal activity against freshwater species. Mechanistic evidence validates that the activity stems from a synergy of phenomena, including controlled ion release, ROS, and membrane damage due to oxidative stress, supported by findings from enzymatic and cellular assays. These results demonstrate that carbon-mediated interfacial electronic coupling is a viable method for controlling the surface reactivity of multicomponent oxide systems with the intact structural integrity of individual components.

Magnetically Recyclable Fe3O4/Cu2O Heterojunction for Photo-Assisted Peroxymonosulfate Activation Toward Bisphenol A Degradation

Xiuzhu Ma,Fengyuan Tian,Xinghao Yan,Dan Xue

Efficient removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from aquatic environments is urgently needed due to its toxicity and persistence. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes offer a promising solution, and their effectiveness critically depends on catalysts with efficient charge transfer and stable interfacial properties. Herein, a magnetically recyclable Fe 3 O 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction was constructed via covalent esterification between polydopamine and citrate layers on each component. Under optimized conditions (catalyst: 90 mg/L, PMS: 2.0 g/L, BPA: 20 mg/L, pH 11), the heterojunction achieved 98% BPA removal within 60 min and retained over 90% of its initial activity after five cycles. Mechanism investigation confirmed •OH and SO 4 • − were the dominant reactive species and elucidated a plausible BPA degradation pathway. This work provided an efficient and recyclable photocatalyst for water treatment and establishes an interfacial engineering strategy for constructing advanced catalysts with promising applications in the environmental and energy fields. Graphical Schematic illustration of the proposed mechanism for PMS activation and BPA degradation over the Fe 3 O 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction.

Local oxophilicity Sm incorporation drives structural alteration of Cu2O/Cu catalyst in CO2 electroreduction

Zihao Wei,Yulin Qin,Mengbo Zou,Lin Jia,Haorun Li,Yuekun Zhang,Jinyu Wang,Zeyu Guo,Hao Wu,Zeyu Zhang,Shanghong Zeng

The rational surface regulation of Cu electrocatalysts through doping foreign components has emerged as a feasible pathway in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction. Herein, the catalysts comprising the Cu 0 -Sm 3+ -Cu + sites are reported to explore the doping-driven the alteration of surface structure and properties. The incorporation of Sm with oxygen affinity in Cu 2 O/Cu decreases the crystallite sizes and evokes lattice expansion of Cu 2 O and Cu to generate surface defects. The interaction of Cu 0 , Sm 3+ and Cu + promotes dual-carbon production by stabilizing Cu + and enhancing *CO coverage and water dissociation. Our findings therefore reveal the role of Sm in promoting beneficial changes of Cu-based electrocatalysts.

Surface Oxygen Species Modulation of Cu2O/Cu Foam for Enhanced Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Yanjun Wang,Yuancai Lv,Yifan Liu,Minghua Liu

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate for ammonia production is recognized as a viable method to support a sustainable artificial nitrogen cycle. Extensive research has been focused on enhancing the performance and selectivity of electrocatalysts for NO 3 - RR (nitrate reduction reaction). In this study, we show that modifying the surface oxygen species via thermal treatment and dispersant addition is an effective way to improve the NO 3 - RR performance of Cu 2 O/CF. Using advanced spectroscopic methods, we show that thermal treatment and dispersant addition can greatly boost the generation of oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups on the surface of Cu 2 O/CF. Electrocatalytic reaction rate experiment, in-situ FT-IR, DEMS analyses and DFT calculations further suggest that oxygen vacancies on the Cu 2 O/CF surface promote the adsorption and conversion of nitrate and its intermediate, nitrite. Meanwhile, hydroxyl groups promoted the selective hydrogenation of NO to NH 3 . Our findings highlight the essential role of surface oxygen species in NO 3 - RR and provide a foundation for designing advanced electrocatalysts through surface engineering approaches.

NIR-enhanced nanoreactors within Cu2O@Au–Pt scaffold for antibacterial therapy of diabetic wounds

Cijun Shuai,Jiang Xiao,Kangdong Wang,Gao Pan,Shuping Peng,Qi Zhong

Diabetic patients frequently suffer from skin ulcers exacerbated by bacterial infections. Cu 2 O nanozymes present a promising antibacterial alternative to antibiotics due to their enzyme-like catalytic activity. However, their efficacy is hindered by the low H 2 O 2 concentration in the bacterial microenvironment and the slow electron transfer during catalysis. To mitigate these limitations, we exploited Cu 2 O's intrinsic reducing ability to grow Au–Pt nanoparticles, thereby creating Cu 2 O@Au–Pt nanoreactors. Subsequently, we fabricated Cu 2 O@Au–Pt/Polycaprolactone skin scaffolds using laser powder bed fusion. In the scaffold, Cu 2 O catalyzed H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals, inducing bacterial apoptosis. Au–Pt nanoparticles enhanced this catalysis in three manners: by providing additional H 2 O 2 through glucose oxidation, elevating the reaction temperature via plasmonic resonance, and facilitating electron transfer through metal-support interactions. Photothermal experiments and simulations illuminated the near-field coupling and interface hotspot formation mechanisms in the Cu 2 O@Au–Pt hybrid structure, boosting the catalytic rate at the interface. DFT calculations and electrochemical tests verified a reduced energy barrier for electron transfer in the Cu 2 O@Au–Pt system, enhancing its redox capability. Upon NIR irradiation, the scaffold increased intracellular ROS by 84.5 % and achieved a 99.9 % antibacterial efficacy against E. coli. These findings highlight the potential of the Cu 2 O@Au–Pt nanozyme scaffold for treating diabetic wounds.

Unveiling pH-Dependent Mechanistic Shifts in Cu2O-Catalyzed Nitrate Electroreduction for Selective Ammonia Synthesis

Zizi Wang,Fengchen Zhou,Binxin Lv,Jiayue Yu,Junjun Zhang,Yifan Zhang,Yang Wu,Yong Wang,Wen Luo

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) offers a sustainable route for ammonia synthesis, yet its practical implementation requires catalysts adaptable to pH fluctuations inherent in industrial wastewater systems. Herein, Cu 2 O nanocubes as a model catalyst is synthesized and decoupled the pH-dependent reaction mechanisms with systematic experimental investigations. In acid electrolytes, the catalyst exhibited 93.3% faradaic efficiency for NH 3 with a yield rate of 34.6 mg h −1 mg cat −1 at −0.7 V versus. RHE. In contrast, in alkaline and neutral electrolytes, NH 3 synthesis is impeded by the formation of NO 2 - which served as the predominant by-product. Through operando infrared spectroscopy analysis, proton availability as the pivotal regulator is identified: Acidic media facilitates the further conversion of * NO 2 intermediates into NH 3 via the NOH pathway, whereas H + -deficient environments in neutral/alkaline conditions divert reaction flux through the NHO pathway. This mechanistic elucidation establishes proton concentration as a key parameter for steering nitrate-to-ammonia conversion efficiency.

Photothermal catalysis over core-shell Cu/Cu2O catalyst for overall N2 fixation from air

Tong Li,Huiying Yang,Meiyuan Wu,Kelei Huang,Xiangchao Meng,Zizhen Li

Industrial nitrogen fixation processes, such as the Haber-Bosch and Ostwald processes, are energy-intensive and cause environmental issues. Here, a photothermal evaporation catalytic evaporator was constructed using a core-shell Cu/Cu 2 O (Copper/ Copper(I) oxide) catalyst supported on carbon foam (CF) for efficient overall nitrogen fixation under air. The evaporator utilized the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Cu nanoparticles and the excellent photothermal conversion capability of CF. It could achieve a surface temperature of 362.2°C under full spectrum light intensity of 1500 mW·cm −2 . The gaseous reaction environment generated by this photothermal evaporator overcame the low solubility of conventional photocatalytic N 2 in water and enhanced mass transfer. The Cu/Cu 2 O interface promoted charge separation, and the hot carriers from Cu nanoparticles accelerated the activation of N 2 . Meanwhile, the charge transfer process between the interfaces (Cu 0 -e - →Cu + , O 2- -e - →OV (Oxygen vacancy), Cu + +e - →Cu 0 , O 2 filled OV) made it possible to ensure the structural integrity throughout the reaction cycle. Under air conditions, the evaporator yield rate of NH 4 + and NO 3 - reached 691.96 μmol g −1 h −1 and 423.87 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, surpassing most reported catalysts. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the interface of Cu/Cu 2 O facilitated electron transfer to N 2 , weakening the N N bond and lowering reaction barriers. This work demonstrated a synergistic photothermal-evaporation strategy for efficient nitrogen fixation, providing a sustainable pathway for overall nitrogen fixation in air.

Internally hollow Cu2O nanoframes with the abundance of {110} facets enhance direct propylene epoxidation

Qiu Yueming,Zhang Yichen,Zhang Ronghui,Huang Meng,Tan Kok Bing,Zhan Guowu,Fu Gang,Li Qingbiao,Huang Jiale

The gas-phase direct epoxidation of propylene (DEP) using molecular oxygen, which has been deemed the ‘dream reaction’ for propylene oxide (PO) production due to its efficiency and environmental benefits, remains highly regarded by researchers. In this contribution, we engineer a series of Cu 2 O nanocatalysts by employing the ligand-protection/selective facet-etching technique. Among these, the internally hollow Cu 2 O nanoframes, featuring increased specific surface area and a prevalence of {110} sites, achieve a triple-win in activity, selectivity, and stability, with an optimal PO formation rate of 0.18 mmol g cat -1 h -1 and a selectivity of 83.8% at 175 °C. In addition, long-term tests confirm that these internally hollow nanoframes maintain high activity and selectivity for over 300 minutes. Further characterizations, combined with density functional theory calculations, confirm that the unique atomic arrangement of copper and oxygen on the Cu 2 O {110} facet facilitate the formation of chemically adsorbed oxygen species and propylene oxide as well. We anticipate that the ligand-protection/selective facet-etching approach may serve as a versatile method for fabricating well-defined catalyst architectures.

Spherically aggregated Cu2O–TA hybrid sub-microparticles with modulated size and improved chemical stability

Chao Cai,Tang Zhu,Dongdong Li,Yun Ran,Haixia Dong,Ning Zhao,Jian Xu

In this paper, tannic acid (TA) was used to assist the fabrication of spherically aggregated Cu2O–TA hybrid sub-microparticles with good chemical stability and controllable sizes. TA exhibited multiple functions in the synthesis: the reductant for the formation of Cu2O crystal seeds, the stabilizer of the primary Cu2O crystals and the protector against the oxidation of Cu2O. A probable mechanism was presumed, including 1) seed formation and TA encapsulation, 2) primary crystal nucleation and growth, and 3) aggregation into spheres. We found that pH played a key role in determining the final morphology of the product while the precursor concentration strongly influenced the size of the particles. At a suitable pH, hierarchically structured Cu2O–TA sub-microspheres with nanocrystals as building blocks were produced. The size of the spheres can be tuned from 130 to 670 nm by adjusting the precursor concentration. Cu2O–TA hybrids exhibited excellent chemical stability against water and oxygen. The method reported here possessed many advantages like cost-effectiveness, facility of preparation, environmental friendliness, chemical stability and excellent adjustability. The properties of the prepared Cu2O particles might facilitate their applications in marine antifouling paints, adsorption materials and antibacterial agents.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and photodegradation performance of Ag and Cu2O co-decorated TiO2 nanotubes

Xianshu Zheng,Rui Piao,Xueqin Wang,Peng Qiao,Xin Guo,Meiru Zheng,Yanxiu Liu,Yuanyuan Wang,Hua Song,Yanguang Chen,Fuping Feng

In this study, TiO2 nanotubes were synthesized through anodic oxidation and subsequently coated with Ag and Cu2O nanoparticles via a two-step photochemical deposition process. The photocatalytic performance of the samples was further analyzed by the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and photodegradation of Rhodamine B. The Ag/Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes (4.34 at% of Ag and 0.13 at% of Cu) showed optimal photocatalytic performance. The nanocomposite catalyst delivered a photoinduced current density of 0.335 mA cm−2 and achieved 96.7% RhB degradation within 120 minutes of the reaction. The theoretical hydrogen production rate was 5.06 µmol cm−2 h−1, showing a 1.9-fold enhancement over that of pure TiO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and LSV tests further revealed that the Ag/Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes exhibited improved charge transfer properties and hydrogen evolution activity. The performance is ascribed to the built-in p–n heterojunction between Cu2O and TiO2 that promotes carrier separation, further amplified by the intense local electromagnetic field generated through the LSPR effect of Ag, which collectively accelerates both photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen production rate over the Ag/Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes. The methodology developed herein offers a practical guide for constructing novel multifunctional photocatalysts with controlled heterojunctions for diverse applications.

Lignin confined in wood as a sensitizer for Cu2O: Study on photocatalytic performance enhancement

Wenxuan Wang,Feihan Yu,Ming He,Shengkai Liu,Huiling Li,Junreng Liu,Xi Li,Jing Wang,Guihua Yang,Daxin Liang

Wood, as a renewable resource, is mainly composed of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. Lignin is spatially confined within the rigid cage-like structure formed by cellulose and hemicellulose, which restricts its rotation and thereby enhances the phosphorescence emission of lignin. To investigate the effect of the phosphorescence emission properties of lignin on photocatalysts, this study employed a demethylation reaction to perform in-situ modification of lignin in wood. Through the chelating effect of demethylated lignin, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) photocatalysts were anchored on the wood surface via an in-situ synthesis method, forming a stable heterostructure. The design of lignin-sensitized catalysts with lignin spatially confined in wood was verified using the catalytic reduction reaction of 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The results show that the loading of the stable heterostructure and the sensitization effect of spatially confined lignin can increase the photocatalytic efficiency of Cu 2 O by 23.08 times, which provides an effective approach for the high-value application of wood.
