Modification of silica gel by butanedioic anhydride (SiO 2 –BDAH) results in efficient adsorbents for removal of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) from aqueous solutions. SiO 2 –BDAH was characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, thermogravimetic analysis, and potentiometric titration. The effect of contact time, pH, and initial concentration of radioactive solutions and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the sorbent was investigated. The sorption equilibrium times of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) onto SiO 2 –BDAH were 1.5, 2, and about 10 h. The sorption percentages of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) increased with increased pH from 1 to 5. The sorption process of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) can be described by the Langmuir model, with sorption capacities of 5.10 × 10 −5 , 5.06 × 10 −5 , and 3.44 × 10 −5 mol/L, respectively. The enthalpy and entropy changes were all positive, whereas the free energy changes were negative. This study indicated that SiO 2 –BDAH can remove U(VI) and Th(IV) at the same time in the presence of multiple ions from waste water quickly.

The uniform 1D nano-rods of RE 3+ doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 ( Ln = Y and Lu; RE = Pr, Sm and Eu) were synthesized through a facile two-step hydrothermal method without extra fluorine source followed by post-heat treatment. The phase formation, morphologies, as well as photoluminescence properties of the materials were investigated. The precursor composition was determined to be Ln (OH) 1.69 F 1.31 using the Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The average lengths of Y 7 O 6 F 9 and Lu 7 O 6 F 9 were about 6.8 and 7.9 μm, respectively, with the average width of about 650 nm. It was interesting that the tip of the nano-rods exhibits a straight line and divergent umbrella shaped bifurcation for Y 7 O 6 F 9 and Lu 7 O 6 F 9 , respectively. Upon ultraviolet excitation, Pr 3+ , Sm 3+ and Eu 3+ ions in Ln 7 O 6 F 9 showed blue, orange and red emissions originating from their characteristic f-f transitions. In addition, the 4 f 1 5 d 1 → 4 f 2 band emissions (340–450 nm) as well as typical 4 f 2 → 4 f 2 line emissions (450–700 nm) of Pr 3+ were observed in Pr 3+ -doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 . For Sm 3+ -doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 , only the typical f - f transitions of Sm 3+ were observed with the absence of charge transfer (CT) band. However, the broad excitation bands at 255 nm attributing to the charge transfer transition of Eu 3+ (i.e. O 2− → Eu 3+ CT) were observed in Eu 3+ -doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 .

In this work, a hydrophilic Eu-based ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor (PAAC-Eu) was developed for Cu2+ ion detection in aqueous solution and imaging in living cells. The sensor was prepared via a simple one-step reaction at room temperature, leveraging the synergistic coordination of commercially accessible polyacrylic acid (PAA) and coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (CCAH) with Eu3+ ion. PAAC-Eu was easy to disperse in aqueous media and exhibited two characteristic emissions at 406 nm and 618 nm, respectively, upon excited at 350 nm. Cu2+ ion could bind with the free carboxyl groups in PAAC-Eu within 10 min leading to a decrease in the fluorescence at 618nm (I618), but negligible effect on the fluorescence at 406 nm (I406). Accordingly, a rapid, sensitive and selective method for detecting Cu2+ ion was established. By this method, Cu2+ ion assay could be completed within 30 min. A good linear relationship was obtained between I406/I618 and Cu2+ ion concentration at 0-20.0 μM (0-1.28 mg L-1) with the detection limit as low as 0.175 μM (11.2 μg L-1). The proposed method has been successfully applied to quantify Cu2+ ion in real water samples. Moreover, a portable paper-based sensor was exploited by loading PAAC-Eu in filter paper, by which the visual detection of Cu2+ ion could be achieved independent of large instruments. Finally, cell experiments have demonstrated the low cytotoxicity and good cell-permeability of PAAC-Eu, and it has been successfully used for ratiometric fluorescence imaging of Cu2+ ion in living cells.

The NaCl:xEu 3+ (x = 0.002, 0.004, 0.006, 0.008, 0.01, 0.02) ceramics were synthesized using a cold sintering method under varying temperature and pressure conditions. The impact of Eu 3+ ions on the structural and optical properties of NaCl ceramics was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), analytical scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV–visible spectroscopy, reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and fluorescence lifetime measurements. XRD analyses confirmed the incorporation of Eu ions into the matrix lattice. SEM results indicated that the ceramics achieved high density when the uniaxial pressure exceeded 300 MPa. EDS analysis demonstrated a well-distributed presence of rare earth ions, devoid of impurities. PL spectroscopy revealed that the intensity of the emission spectra increased the increase of Eu 3+ concentration and observed the optimal luminescence performance at x = 0.01 mol% and a sintering temperature of 125 °C. XPS results indicated that the Eu ions were predominantly in a trivalent state within the NaCl ceramics. Collectively, the above results provide valuable insights for the preparation of rare-earth doped alkali halide ceramics using cold sintering technology.

In this work, a layered nanocomposite with a superior adsorption ability has been designed and prepared for the preconcentration of Eu(III), a chemical analogue of trivalent lanthanides [Ln(III)] and actinides [An(III)] in nuclear waste. This nanocomposite was obtained by fabricating magnesium silicate (MgSi) of the Talc-phase Mg 3 Si 4 O 9 (OH) 10 on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, in which the GO matrix can effectively avoid the agglomeration of MgSi. A hierarchical structure of GO@MgSi with interwoven nano-sized MgSi lamellae dispersedly standing on the surface of GO was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Such a hierarchical structure effectively increases the surface area of MgSi, leading to up to date the highest adsorption capacity (344.82 mg·L −1 ) for enriching Eu(III). Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (PXRD) of Mg 3 Si 4 O 9 (OH) 10 shows that the (0 2 0) and (2 0 0) diffraction peaks disappear after the adsorption of Eu(III), indicating structural changes in MgSi lamellae after adsorption. The infrared absorption spectra (IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements confirm the structural transformations in the Si O tetrahedral and Mg OH octahedral sheet in MgSi, suggesting that MgSi lamella rather than GO sheet might play a dominant role during the adsorption process. The superior adsorption behaviors of GO@MgSi indicate that it is a highly promising and efficient candidate for Eu(III) preconcentration in aqueous solution.

Eu 3+ -doped Y 2 O 3 -based luminescent materials can be used as a scintillator for electron or high energy β-ray irradiation, which are essential for applications such as electron microscopy and nuclear batteries. Therefore, it is essential to understand their defect mechanisms and to develop materials with excellent properties. In this paper, Y 2 O 3 -based transparent ceramics with different Eu 3+ doping concentrations were prepared by solid-state reactive vacuum sintering. This series of transparent ceramic samples exhibits strong red emission under electron beam excitation at the keV level. However, color change appears after the high-energy electron irradiation due to the capture of electrons by the traps in the Y 2 O 3 lattice. Optical transmittance, laser-excited luminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other analyses indicated that the traps, or the color change, mainly originate from the residual oxygen vacancies, which can be suppressed by high Eu doping. Seen from the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, higher doping concentrations of Eu 3+ showed stronger resistance to electron irradiation damage, but also resulted in lower emissions due to concentration quenching. Therefore, 10% doping of Eu was selected in this work to keep the high emission intensity and strong radiation resistance both. This work helps to enhance the understanding of defect formation mechanisms in the Y 2 O 3 matrix and will be of benefit for the modification of scintillation properties for functional materials systems.

The presence of methyl orange (MO) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely studied as photocatalysts for wastewater treatment. However, TiO2 NPs have the drawbacks of high energy required for activation, fast electron–hole pair recombination and difficulty in recovering from water. To overcome these problems, europium decorated titanium dioxide/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (Eu–TiO2/PVDF) membranes were successful prepared in this work by combining the modified sol–gel method and the immersion phase inversion method. The Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes obtained with the increase of Eu–TiO2 NPs content during the preparation process were named M1, M2 and M3, respectively. The pure PVDF membrane without the addition of Eu–TiO2 NPs was named M0, which was prepared by the immersion phase inversion method and served as a reference. The prepared Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes could not only adsorb MO, but also degrade CIP under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes exhibited adsorption–photocatalytic activity towards a mixture of MO and CIP under visible-light irradiation. Last but not the least, the Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes exhibited excellent recyclability and reusability, opening the avenue for a possible use of these membranes in sewage-treatment plants.

Rare earth luminescent complexes encounter defects such as poor thermal stability, poor dispersibility, and easy quenching of fluorescence emission by water in practical applications. To improve these defects, we innovatively propose using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) to enhance the performance of rare earth complexes. We designed and prepared POSS-MAA-EuL composite materials. POSS is modified with long chains containing -COOH functional groups, allowing it to bind with rare earth complexes through coordination interactions. Experimental results have shown that the combination of POSS not only improves the dispersibility of rare earth complexes, but also enhances their thermal stability. It is worth noting that the binding of POSS endows rare earth complexes with the ability of resisting fluorescence emission quenching by water. When the same volume of deionized water is added (2000 μL), the fluorescence of rare earth complex is almost completely quenched, with a quenching efficiency of 99.0 %, while the quenching efficiency of POSS-MAA-EuL is only 39.2 %. There are few reports on improving the water quenching resistance of rare earth luminescent complexes by combining with POSS. Therefore, this work provides a new way to improve the performance of rare earth complexes.

The development of probes for the efficient detection of volatile organic compounds is crucial for both human health protection and environmental monitoring. In this study, we successfully synthesized a ratiometric fluorescent sensing material [Eu-UiO-67 (1:1)], featuring dual-emission fluorescence peaks via a one-pot method. This material demonstrated exceptional ratiometric fluorescence recognition properties for liquid styrene and isoprene, achieving low limit of detections (LODs) of 6.2 and 20.24 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, we leveraged its outstanding photoluminescence properties to fabricate a Eu-UiO-67 film, which exhibited distinctive fluorescence responses toward gaseous styrene and isoprene. This unique behavior resulted in LODs of 12.42 ppb for gaseous styrene and 15.39 ppb for gaseous isoprene. The investigation into the sensing mechanisms revealed that the fluorescence response for styrene was mediated by an internal filtration effect, which arose from the competitive energy absorption between styrene and the Eu-UiO-67 (1:1) material. In contrast, fluorescence resonance energy transfer occurred between isoprene and the Eu-UiO-67 (1:1) materials. This approach offers a sensitive and reliable method for the detection of liquid/gaseous styrene and isoprene.

Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, is associated with severe endocrine disruption and carcinogenic risks, posing persistent biological and environmental hazards. Herein, a bimetallic Fe/Eu–based metal–organic framework (Fe/Eu–MOF) with distinct multi–emission properties was developed as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for sensitive and intelligent visual detection of DES. The Fe/Eu–MOF exhibited stable red emission at 615 nm and DES–responsive blue emission at 410 nm, enabling self–referenced quantification. The sensor showed two linear ranges (0.005–2 and 2–30 μg/mL), a low detection limit (1.78 ng/mL), and excellent selectivity against potential interferents. Its practicality was validated in milk and shrimp, demonstrating excellent recovery and reproducibility. Additionally, a paper–based sensor integrated with smartphone RGB analysis enabled rapid, on–site, and instrument–free detection. Mechanism studies revealed that DES coordination with Fe centers suppressed non–radiative decay and enhanced fluorescence. This work provides a robust and intelligent platform for portable monitoring of DES residues, offering significant potential for real–time biohazard surveillance and visual diagnostics in resource–limited settings.

Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+) doped bismuth-based inorganic compounds have attracted considerable interest as promising candidates for next-generation inorganic luminescent materials. Here, a series of K0.3Bi0.7F2.4(KBF) nanocrystalline particles with controlled morphology have been synthesized through a low-temperature aqueous-phase precipitation method. Using KBF as the host matrix, Eu3+, Tb3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+,and Dy3+ions are introduced to obtain K0.3Bi0.7F2.4:Ln3+(KBF:Ln) nanophosphors. The as-prepared KBF:Ln nanophosphors exhibit commendable photoluminescence properties, in which multicolor emissions in a single host lattice can be obtained by doping different Ln3+ions when excited by ultraviolet light. Moreover, the morphology and photoluminescence performance of these nanophosphors remain unchanged under different soaking times in water, showing good stability in a humid environment. The proposed simple and rapid synthesis route, low-cost and nontoxic bismuth-based host matrix, and tunable luminescent colors will lead the way to access these KBF:Ln nanophosphors for appealing applications such as white LEDs and optical thermometry.

An Eu(III)-functionalized strontium-organic framework (Eu 3+ @Sr-MOF) was synthesized by encapsulating Eu 3+ ions into the pores of Sr-MOF via postsynthetic modification (PSM) and fully characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA. The luminescent properties of Eu 3+ @Sr-MOF were measured and investigated in detail, which demonstrated that Eu 3+ @Sr-MOF not only possessed excellent water and chemical stabilities in a wide pH range (5–10) but also displayed red luminescence with excitation/emission maxima at 332/617 nm. The Eu 3+ @Sr-MOF can be considered as a highly selective and sensitive recyclable luminescence probe for sensing Cr(III) and Cr(VI) based on strong luminescence quenching effects; it can be recycled at least five times. The luminescence probe for Cr 3+ , CrO 4 2− , and Cr 2 O 7 2− shows low detection limits (0.15 μM, 0.17 μM, and 0.13 μM, respectively), relatively broad linear ranges (0.6–150 μM, 0.1–200 μM and 0.4–180 μM, respectively), and high quenching constants K SV . The signals can be observed by the naked eye under UV light of 365 nm. The method was applied to the determination of total Cr in environmental water samples.
