Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is recognized as a promising candidate for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER); however, its practical application is hindered by limited active sites and low electrical conductivity. Fluorine (F), known for its strong electron affinity and electronegativity, can modulate the surface electronic structure and physicochemical properties of catalysts. In this study, we synthesized MnO2 nanosheets and fluorine-doped MnO2 (F-MnO2) using simple hydrothermal and ion-exchange methods. We then assessed the influence of fluorine doping on the intrinsic OER activity and stability of these catalysts, as well as their underlying catalytic mechanisms. By manipulating the amount of fluorine introduced and the fluorination temperature, we explored the relationship between varying fluorine concentrations and OER performance. The experimental results show that F-MnO2 exhibits higher OER activity than pristine MnO2. At a current density of 10 mA cm–2, the overpotential required for F-MnO2 is merely 320 mV, substantially lower than that of pristine MnO2. This enhanced performance is ascribed to fluorine doping, which leads to an increased quantity of active Mn3+ centers and oxygen vacancies, along with an expanded electrochemically active surface area. Furthermore, F-MnO2 displays improved stability during the testing period. It maintains long-term stability for over 25 h, further corroborating the catalyst's excellent anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties in alkaline water electrolysis.

Fluoride ions (F − ) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in industrial wastewater pose a serious threat to the global environment. Adsorption is the most widely used treatment technology for F − and PFAS in the field of water pollution control. However, existing zirconium-based MOFs face challenges such as the inability to synergistically and efficiently adsorb PFAS, high preparation costs, limited adsorption capacity, and an insufficiently understood adsorption mechanism in multi-component pollution systems. Here, we prepared a novel cerium/zirconium/lanthanum tri-metallic MOF (denoted as Ce/Zr/La-M) by doping low-cost metals and loaded it onto a sponge modified with dimethyloctadecyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride (DTSACL), ultimately obtaining Ce/Zr/La-MSD. The practical adsorption capacity of Ce/Zr/La-MSD for F − is 255 mg/g, which is the highest reported value at similar initial concentrations, while the removal rates for PFAS (C 6 -C 8 ) and PFAS (C 4 ) exceed 96% and 84%, respectively.DFT calculations revealed that doping with La shifted the d-band center of the metals in the MOF closer to the Fermi level, enhancing the material's electron-donating capability. A series of characterization and kinetic simulation results demonstrated that the adsorption mechanism of F − by Ce/Zr/La-MSD involves electrostatic interactions, complexation effects, ion exchange and hydrogen bonding. The primary adsorption sites for PFBA, PFBS, PFOS, and PFHxS were the quaternary ammonium groups containing three carbon atoms, whereas the primary adsorption sites for PFOA and PFHxA were the C 18 chains on DTSACL. In summary, this study provides new insights for the rational design of multifunctional adsorbents and the interpretation of their mechanisms.

Bisphenol F (BPF) has been used in the syntheses of polymers, which are widely used in coatings, varnishes, adhesives, and other plastics. During the past decades, BPF contamination in the aquatic environment has dramatically increased due to its release from manmade products. Concerns have driven much attention to whether it may adversely impact aquatic lives or human beings. The present study performed an acute toxic exposure experiment and a 15 d developmental exposure of BPF at environmental concentrations (20, 200, and 2000 ng/L) using Chinese medaka (Oryzias sinensis). In the acute toxic exposure, the LC50of BPF to Chinese medaka is 87.90 mg/L at 96 h. Developmental exposure induced a significant increase in the frequency of larvae with abnormalities in the 2000 ng/L BPF group compared to the control group. Transcriptomic analysis of the whole larvae revealed 565 up-regulated and 493 down-regulated genes in the 2000 ng/L BPF exposure group. Analysis of gene ontology and KEGG pathways enrichments indicated endocrine disorders to be associated with BPF-induced developmental toxicity. The present results suggest that BPF is developmentally toxic at 2000 ng/L concentration in Chinese medaka and causes endocrine-related aberrations in the transcriptional network of genes. Keywords:Bisphenol F;Chinese medaka;toxicity;developmental defects;endocrine disruptor

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalysts provide promising OER activity which can be employed in overall water splitting for hydrogen production. However, their weak surface hydrogen adsorption (Had) and high water dissociation energy can result in the inferior hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) activity. In this paper, a highly efficient HER catalyst of F-doped NiCoMo LDH is successfully designed and synthesized through in situ growing on nickel foam (F-NiCoMo LDH/NF) for overall water splitting. DFT calculations demonstrate that the introduction of Mo and F atoms in NiCo LDH can induce the generation of anisotropic lattice strain, resulting in the generation of high-energy active interface and shifting the d-band centers. Therefore, the adsorption energy of Had is optimized and the water dissociation energy barrier is decreased. As a result, this F-NiCoMo LDH/NF catalyst electrode displays a low overpotential of 107.5 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 67.2 mV dec−1 for HER. The assembled electrolyzer by employing this catalyst electrode requires only 1.83 V to deliver 300 mA cm−2 and operates stably for 100 h.

Carbon dots (CDs) as a new type of carbon nanomaterial have gained tremendous attention due to their wide applications in photocatalyst, sensor, bioimaging and so on. In the present work, a novel kind of fluorine and nitrogen co-doped CDs (F,N-CDs) have been synthesized from 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) and p -phenylenediamine ( p -PD) via a hydrothermal method . An electrochemical sensor for detecting catechol was designed and constructed on the basis of F,N-CDs and laccase (Lac). Compared with the traditional detection methods of catechol, the as-fabricated sensor Lac-F,N-CDs/glassy carbon electrode (GCE) shows a comparatively low detection limit (0.014 μM) as well as a high sensitivity (219.17 μA cm −2 mΜ −1 ) through the amperometric i-t responses method. The most significant feature of the sensor is its long cycle stability and can be used for many times (≥50) under ambient conditions. The prepared Lac-F,N-CDs/GCE sensor has been employed for detection of catechol in tap water and lake water successfully. This work provides a new pathway to stabilize laccase by using CDs and other carbon nanomaterials to construct efficient electrochemical sensor for detecting catechol and its analogue.

Medium-temperature molten salt reserve primary cell utilizes low-melting nitrate electrolyte, that is considered suitable for geothermal borehole as well as oil and gas exploration . In this work, Cr 3+ and F − ions were introduced into spinel lithium manganate oxides by high-temperature solid-state method and verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of fluorine content on the morphology and discharge performance of the LiCr 0.1 Mn 1.9 O 4− x F x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) have been studied in LiCr 0.1 Mn 1.9 O 4− x F x /LiNO 3 -KNO 3 -Ca(NO 3 ) 2 /Li-Mg-B system. Fluoride-doped samples have a significant improvement in discharge performance at the condition of 10 mA·cm −2 and 250 °C because of the stabilization of the crystal structure. Factors of operating temperature and current density have a significant effect on battery discharge performance, and the surroundings of 10 mA·cm −2 and 200–250 °C contributes the battery to achieve high performance. That indicates the LiCr 0.1 Mn 1.9 O 4− x F x /LiNO 3 -KNO 3 -Ca(NO 3 ) 2 /Li-Mg-B battery shows great potential in geothermal borehole as well as oil and gas exploration environment.

Driven by the increasing global energy demand, the development of innovative energy conversion and storage systems is becoming more and more urgent. As one of the attractive means, water splitting has attracted widespread attention because of its great potential in storing electricity in the form of chemical fuel which also makes it a promising solution to the utilization of non-grid electricity generated by solar or wind. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is generally deemed as the key rate-limiting step of water splitting, and thus studying efficient OER electrocatalysts with a low overpotential and good stability is of vital importance. Here, we successfully prepared an OER catalyst with excellent electrochemical performance through a simple anion doping. Firstly, a stable cubic perovskite SrCoO3−δ was prepared by anion F-doping instead of traditional A and/or B site doping. Secondly, SrCoO2.85−δF0.15 demonstrates excellent OER activity superior to its parent hexagonal compound H-Sr2Co2O5 and those perovskites prepared via complicated A- and/or B-site doping. DFT calculations and XPS investigations reveal that the cubic structure and the highly oxidative oxygen species (O22−/O−) via F− doping jointly contribute to the better OER properties of SrCoO2.85−δF0.15. Our work brings forth a promising strategy to stabilize cubic structures from hexagonal ones via a simple anion doping strategy, which may open a new avenue for the development of even more effective OER catalysts and may be applied in many other fields related to structure transformation, in addition to energy and catalysis fields.

The application of photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is strongly limited by catalyst deactivation , low mineralization ability and mass-transfer in gas-solid phase. Wet-scrubbing coupled with PCO (WPCO) provides a novel and efficient method for VOCs degradation. Fluorine-doped TiO 2 (F-TiO 2 ) photocatalyst was prepared and applied in this coupled process for toluene degradation. Toluene removal efficiency reached 80% over F-TiO 2 , while it was only 25% over TiO 2 in the WPCO process. As for gas-solid PCO process, F-TiO 2 had a low toluene removal efficiency of 10%. Furthermore, the mineralization capability of WPCO process over F-TiO 2 also remarkably increased, achieving about 92 ppmv CO 2 generated from toluene oxidation . Compared with TiO 2 , the surface fluorinated TiO 2 significantly enhanced toluene degradation since it generated mobile hydroxyl radical ( OH) in the WPCO process. The F/Ti molar ratio ( R F ) greatly affected photocatalytic activity towards toluene degradation, and the F-TiO 2 with R F at 1 obtained the best performance. The photocatalytic activity of F-TiO 2 had good stability and remained highly efficient after four runs.

A sensitive nanocomplex probe prepared from fluorescent polydopamine nanoparticles (F-PDA) and cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanosheets was established for the determination of α-glucosidase activity. In this detection system, the fluorescence of F-PDA was firstly quenched by CoOOH nanosheets based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Subsequently, ascorbic acid was produced from 2-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- l -ascorbic acid which was selectively hydrolyzed by α-glucosidase. CoOOH was reduced to Co 2+ by the released ascorbic acid, which resulted in the recovery of F-PDA nanoparticles fluorescence. In consequence, α-glucosidase activity was determined by the fluorescence recovery degree of the F-PDA nanoparticle. This fluorescent method showed a good linear relationship with the activity of α-glucosidase from 2 to 80 U L −1 and low detection limit of 1.65 U L −1 (S/N = 3). This fluorescence probe with high selectivity and sensitivity demonstrated a remarkable applicability in human serum samples and provided an alternative for α-glucosidase inhibitors screening in the discovery of anti-diabetes drugs.

Food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio is one of the most important factors affecting microbial growth and pollutant removal in biological wastewater treatment system. For stability of aerobic granular process, optimal range of F/M ratio and a maneuverable F/M ratio control method via quantitative sludge discharge were investigated in this study. Results showed that stable aerobic granules were achieved with good settleability, high pollutant removal efficiency and microbial diversity when F/M ratio was controlled at 0.4–0.5 gCOD/gSS d. In addition, a maneuverable F/M ratio control method via quantitative sludge discharge was developed to verify the feasibility for optimization of F/M ratio. By this method, aerobic granules cultivated with the F/M ratio of 0.4 ± 0.02 gCOD/gSS d had better pollutant removal performance and stable structure with higher protein-like components in EPS. This study further revealed the importance of F/M ratio in the stability of aerobic granular sludge process.

MXenes, a new family of two-dimensional materials, have been recognized as promising candidates for supercapacitors because of their unique chemical and physical properties. It has been proven that the terminal groups on MXenes play a decisive role in the pseudocapacitance . In this study, we report a highly efficient strategy to remove the –F terminal groups of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Our initial purpose was to explore the application of Ti 3 C 2 T x in sodium-ion batteries, whereas we found that almost all the –F terminal groups on Ti 3 C 2 T x could be eliminated by reaction with Na metal at high temperature, and abundant terminal –O was introduced after the subsequent washing step. The mechanism involved is clarified by combining systematical spectra analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the modulated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene shows an extraordinarily high specific capacitance of 521 F·g −1 (at scan rate of 2 mV·s −1 ) or 578 F·g −1 (at a discharge rate of 1 A·g −1 ) in 1 м H 2 SO 4 , and 92% capacity could be retained even after 10000 cycles. This study should provide new insight into the surface chemistry of MXenes and facilitate its applications in a variety of fields.

Preparation of high-performance semiconductor photocatalysts is often considered to be the challenge and focus in dealing with water contaminations, and attracts numerous concerns and research interests nowadays. In this work, high-performance Z-scheme AgI/(Na,F) doped g-C 3 N 4 composites were synthesized by facile calcination and in-situ deposition methods and employed for ultrahigh-performance degradation of broad-spectrum antibiotics contaminants. The prepared (Na,F) doped g-C 3 N 4 showed narrower bandgaps, enhanced solar-light absorption, and highly improved visible-light photocatalytic performance. Besides, the strong combined interfaces between AgI nanoparticles and (Na,F) doped g-C 3 N 4 was contributing to visible-light harvesting and highly boosted charge separation of the samples, among which AgI/(Na,F)–CN-40% composite presented the best visible-light photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic reaction rate constant of the AgI/(Na,F)–CN-40% composite was as high as approximately 0.2007 min −1 , which was 65.80 times of pristine g-C 3 N 4 and 3.60 times of AgI, mainly because of the construction of direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathways between AgI and (Na,F) doped g-C 3 N 4 . Finally, the radical scavenger experiments, possible degradation pathways , and photocatalytic mechanism were also proposed.
