The solvent extraction and separation process of Sc(III) and Fe(III) from a strongly acidic and highly concentrated ferric solution using mixtures of di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (D2EHPA) and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) in sulfonated kerosene was studied. The effects of various parameters, including D2EHPA concentration, dosage of TBP, and phase ratio, were investigated for the extraction process. The results indicated that the extraction rate of Sc(III) was 99.72% with 1.09% Fe(III) co-extracted after two stages of counter-current extraction under optimal conditions. Moreover, saturation capacity and slope analysis were used to determine the reaction mechanism. Sc(III) is extracted in the form of HSc(SO 4 ) 2 ·4HL. Further separation of Sc(III) and Fe(III) was realized in a scrubbing and stripping process. First, 98.67% of the co-extracted iron in the loaded organic phase was scrubbed with a dilute HCl solution by a three-stage counter-current scrubbing. Then, 85.00% of Sc(III) can be stripped efficiently with a 2-mol/L NaOH solution saturated in 1-mol/L NaCl by three-stage cross-current stripping.

The nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing (NRFO) process plays a crucial role in geochemical Fe N coupled cycling under anoxic conditions. Both nitrate and nitrite can act as electron acceptors for NRFO bacteria, resulting in the formation of Fe(III) minerals. Nevertheless, the stability of Fe(III) minerals generated during the NRFO process remains unclear. In this study, the Fe(III) minerals were obtained using the model NRFO bacteria strain Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1 in the presence of nitrate or nitrite. The stability of the Fe(III) minerals was examined in the presence of the model Fe(III) reduction bacteria Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (strain MR-1), the chemical reducing reagent sodium dithionite (Na 2 S 2 O 4 ), and hydrochloric acid (HCl), respectively. The main Fe(III) minerals were goethite in the nitrate treatments (named M nitrate ) and tightly attached to the surface of cells. Meanwhile, the main Fe(III) minerals were lepidocrocite in the nitrite treatments (named M nitrite ), showing slight adherence to the cell surface. The reductive dissolution kinetics of M nitrate by strain MR-1 revealed a gradual increase in Fe(II). Little Fe(II) was formed when reduced M nitrite , which was attributed to the residual nitrite acted as a competitive electron acceptor to Fe(III), inhibiting the microbial Fe(III) reduction processes. Furthermore, the Fe(III) minerals were harvested by centrifugation and then reacted with sodium dithionite and hydrochloric acid (HCl), respectively. The incorporation of sodium dithionite and hydrochloric acid facilitated the dissolution of Fe(III) minerals. In the M nitrite treatments, the Fe(III) minerals exhibit enhanced stability due to their inherent higher crystallinity and the protective influence of cell surface and microbial carbon. This study broadens our understanding of the formation and transformation of microbial Fe(III) minerals, thereby improving our knowledge of biogeochemical iron cycling under anoxic conditions.

The advanced oxidation process (AOP) based on hydroxyl radical ( • OH) has garnered increasing attention in water purification and wastewater treatment. However, producing • OH by activating hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) encounters the challenges associated with the sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) regeneration. Herein, we developed a carambola-like catalyst of boron (B)-doped TiO 2 mesocrystals-based iron catalyst (Fe-B-MST), which served as a photocatalyst to modulate the regeneration of Fe(II) in photo Fenton-like systems. We successfully used the electrospinning method to gain membrane and realised the remediation of different industrial wastewater. The Fe-B-MST catalyst exhibits excellent efficiencies in the oxidative degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) pollutants, effectively facilitating the production of • OH while minimising the formation of toxic byproducts, with the first-order kinetic constant ( k = 2.372 min −1 ) being approximately 6.1 times greater than that without B doping, and 19.8 times greater than that observed with commercial TiO 2 . Theoretical calculations and related physicochemical characterisation reveal that B occupies an interstitial site in titania, conferring a sufficiently high valence band potential, making it thermodynamically favourable for H 2 O 2 oxidation and weakening its interaction with • OH, consequently increasing higher reactivity toward the targeted organic pollutant. The B doping facilitates electron transfer, promotes rapid reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), and further enhances • OH production via a photo Fenton-like reaction. The oxidation reaction stoichiometry efficiencies were quantified for different organics and calculated to be in the range of 7.70–24.20 % in Fe-B-MST/H 2 O 2 vis. system, representing an enhancement of 1.18–1.54 times compared to Fe-MST/H 2 O 2 vis. , alongside the utilisation efficiency of H 2 O 2 ( η ) of Fe-B-MST/H 2 O 2 vis. is 1.37–1.67 fold greater than that of Fe-MST/H 2 O 2 vis. after 30 min of reaction. This study expands our understanding and provides valuable insights into applying photocatalysis for enhanced wastewater treatment.

Fe(III)-coordinated mesoporous silica adsorbents functionalized with different loadings of ethylenediamine groups were prepared by a new NH 4 F-assisted co-condensation method and impregnation of Fe 3+ cations. Various characterization techniques, e.g. XRD , SEM, TEM, ICP-MS, elemental analysis , FT-IR spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption, were utilized to investigate the effect of functionalization degrees of adsorbents on their chemical composition, surface chemistry, pore structures and phosphate adsorption capacities in detail. In the batch adsorption tests, the functionalized adsorbents with increasing loadings of ethylenediamine groups possessed markedly enhanced adsorption capacities, although there was a gradual loss of ordered mesostructures accompanied. The adsorption isotherms were represented better by using Langmuir model than Freundlich model, which indicated the presence of monolayer adsorption. In particular, for the resulting adsorbent prepared with 0.5:1 M ratio of AAPTS and TEOS, the maximum phosphate capture capacity calculated from Langmuir model is 20.7 mg P/g. In the kinetic study , the phosphate adsorption followed pseudo-second-order equation well with a correlation coefficient of 0.999, suggesting the adsorption process be chemisorption . The phosphate adsorption efficiency of prepared adsorbent was highly pH-dependent and the high removal of phosphate was achieved within the pH between 3.0 and 6.0. The presence of Cl − and NO 3 - exhibited small impacts on the phosphate adsorption by using our synthesized absorbent; whereas, there were significantly negative effects from HCO 3 - and SO 4 2 - on the phosphate removal. In 0.010 M NaOH, more than 90% of the absorbed phosphate anions on the spent adsorbent could be desorbed, suggesting the absorbent with a capacity of regeneration.

A novel diatomite/chitosan–Fe(III) composite (Fe(III)/Cs@Dia) was synthesized successfully to use as an adsorbent for the removal of anionic azo dye. The composite was further characterized by SEM, FTIR, XPS, and C 13 / Si 29 NMR, and then the adsorption batch experiments were carried out as a function of initial dye concentrations, pH values, contact time and temperatures to determine the adsorption capacities of Fe(III)/Cs@Dia. Compared with several typical isotherm models, the adsorption isotherms were all best-fitted by the Langmuir model, with a maximal 2GL dye uptake of 1250 mg g −1 at pH 6 and 298 K. In addition, kinetic studies followed the pseudo-second-order model and thermodynamic studies revealed that the uptake was exothermic in nature. The adsorption mechanisms were proposed with observation that electrostatic interaction and complexation played the key roles in adsorption process. Moreover, the composite also showed favorable adsorption properties for other four anionic azo dyes (direct yellow R, congo red, methyl orange and direct red 23).

The paper presents a green and easily prepared water-soluble fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots (N CDs) synthesized by one-step hydrothermal process. The N CDs displays brilliant blue fluorescence excited by UV light, with excellent water solubility, and a quantum yield of 15.7 %. The fluorescence intensity of N CDs remains unchanged after 48 h of exposure to ultraviolet light, exhibiting good photostability. Moreover, the ion sensing characteristics of these N CDs have been explored for more than a dozen anions and cations. The result reflects that this fluorescent CDs exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for Fe 3+ within a range spanning of 40 ∼ 500 μΜ with a limit of detection down to 0.22 μΜ. The principle of sensor sensing is likely related to the formation of the internal filtering effect (IFE), which leads to a decline in the fluorescence intensity of N CDs in aqueous solutions containing Fe 3+ . Due to the excellent water solubility, good photostability and high yield of N CDs, the application of prepared N CDs/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as fluorescent materials for white LED devices was explored. The prepared N CDs/PVA (NCP) composite film can also exhibit bright blue light under 365 nm excitation, indicating good application prospects in the area of white LED devices and agricultural films.

Although the reduction of pentavalent arsenic (As(V)) bound to Fe(III) (hydr)oxides (As(V)-containing FeOOH) coupled with organic matter (OM) degradation has received extensive attention, little is known about in situ reduction of FeOOH mineral-bound As(V) (As(V) (s) ) via electron shuttling in the presence of As(V)-reducing bacteria (AsRB). Here, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA), and fulvic acid (SRFA) were used to establish an agar electron shuttle system with ferrihydrite-As(V)/goethite-As(V) and AsRB, which was isolated from high-As groundwater as the candidate strain (RA-1). We found that AQDS was more efficient in shuttling electrons to reduce As(V) (s) and Fe(III) than SRHA and SRFA. High contents of quinone moieties in AQDS indicated that quinone moieties were conducive to As(V) (s) and Fe(III) reduction. The reduction kinetic rates ( K red ) of As(V) (s) were higher than those of Fe(III), indicating the occurrence of in situ As(V) (s) reduction via electron shuttling. Furthermore, K red of As(V) (s) for ferrihydrite-As(V) systems was greater than that of goethite-As(V) systems, demonstrating that As(V) bound to ferrihydrite via monodentate was more easily reduced than that bound to goethite via bidentate. The relative expression levels of As metabolic genes ( ars C, arr A, and ars B) initially increased and then decreased in the late stage of experiments. High As concentrations in suspension inhibited the transcriptional activity of As metabolic genes in the late stage, reducing the electron production efficiency of RA-1 and subsequently slowing in situ reduction of As(V) (s) . This study highlights the importance of OM electron shuttling in the reduction of As(V) (s) , offering new perspectives in As enrichment in groundwater. Plain Language Summary OM can promote microbial As(V) reduction in high As groundwater systems. As a result, we explored how FeOOH mineral-bound As(V) could be in situ reduced via electron shuttling between AsRB and different OM. Our findings showed that AQDS was more effective than other two natural organic matter (NOM, i.e., SRHA and SRFA) in reducing both As(V) (s) and Fe(III), due to its high content of quinone moieties. The results of kinetic analysis demonstrated in situ reduction of As(V) (s) , and As(V) bound to ferrihydrite was more readily reduced than As(V) bound to goethite. In addition, the transcriptional activities of three As metabolic genes initially increased but later declined due to high As concentrations, which further slowed the As(V) (s) reduction process. Overall, these findings provide new insights into organic-mediated As cycling in contaminated groundwater. Key Points High quinone contents in AQDS led to a higher reduction extent of As(V) (s) than in SRHA and SRFA The values of K red, As were greater than those of K red, Fe , demonstrating in situ reduction of As(V) (s) Changes in As metabolic genes affected the electron production efficiency of RA-1 and As(V) (s) reduction

In this work, two−dimensional Mo 2 CT x MXene pillared with transition metal complexes [Fe(III), Co(III), or Ni(II)] was prepared, which shows ultra−high performance as the anode of lithium−ion batteries (LIBs). Firstly, Mo 2 CT x was pretreated with hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant and then mixed with hydrated chloride (FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O, CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O, or NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O) at room temperature. The molar ratio of MXene to hydrated chloride was 1:1. In this process, metal ions (Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , or Ni 2+ ) were successfully loaded on the nanosheets of Mo 2 CT x . The ions were combined with the surface terminated oxygen of MXene to form transition metal complexes by liquid phase agitation method. Moreover, transition metal complexes contribute a portion of their capacity and help Mo 2 CT x enhance its own capacity to a large extent. However, the electrochemical effects on Mo 2 CT x vary depending on the type of transition metal ions. As anodes of LIBs, the final discharge specific capacities after 100th cycles at 2 A g −1 were 511.68 mAh g −1 , 229.22 mAh g −1 and 78.19 mAh g −1 for Fe(III)@Mo 2 CT x , Co(III)@Mo 2 CT x , and Ni(II)@Mo 2 CT x , respectively, while the capacity of pure Mo 2 CT x after delamination was only 31.17 mAh g −1 . At 6 A g −1 , the final discharge capacity of Fe(III)@Mo 2 CT x was 227.4 mAh g −1 after 500th cycles. Therefore, Mo 2 CT x MXene pillared by the complexes, especially Fe(III) complexes, is a promising anode material with high−performance for lithium−ion batteries.

Bacterial infection severely hinders skin wound healing, highlighting the critical application value of developing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory hydrogel dressings. In this work, we focused on β-glucan from Hericium erinaceus (HEBG) as the research object, and proposed a solvent-induced combined temperature manipulation technique to trigger multilevel self-assembly of β-glucan. Furthermore, we incorporated green synthesized near-infrared photosensitizer tannic acid (TA)/iron (III) complex into the system. A hydrogel with exceptional antibacterial properties, capable of responding to near-infrared photothermal stimuli while exhibiting remarkable stiffness and structural consistency, was successfully synthesized. Under near-infrared radiation, HEBG/TA/Fe hydrogels produced local hyperthermia and exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against bacteria-infected wounds. Moreover, the HEBG/TA/Fe hydrogel demonstrates its ability to regulate cytokines by effectively inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators TNF-α and IL-6, while simultaneously enhancing the expression of cell proliferation factor KI-67 and markers associated with angiogenesis such as CD31 and α-SMA. Notably, the results of tissue staining revealed that the NIR + HEBG/TA/Fe 5 hydrogel could effectively promoting granulation and vascularization, improving collagen deposition in infected wounds thereby accelerating the healing process. These findings indicate that mixed hydrogels exhibit potential as viable options for the treatment of bacterial infections.

The widespread application of Fe-based heterogeneous Fenton in water treatment is hindered by two main challenges: the inefficiency of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and the requirement of acidic conditions. In this study, combining schwertmannite with iron phosphide (Sch/FeP) via pre-adding FeP in the formation process of Sch could enhance the Fe(II)/Fe(III) conversion and self-producing acidic environment by SO42– substitution. Specifically, the inclusion of FeP in the Sch/FeP composite markedly increased the content of ≡Fe(II) species, thereby improving the activation of H2O2 to produce substantial quantities of •OH and •O2– radicals. Sch/FeP-driven heterogeneous Fenton exhibited high total organic carbon (TOC) removal (∼60%) and utilization efficiency of H2O2 (100%) after 20 min. Furthermore, Sch/FeP exhibited excellent degradation performance across a broad pH range (2–10), which could be attributed to the SO42– substitution reaction. This study not only addresses critical challenges in heterogeneous Fenton processes but also provides a novel strategy for modifying sulfate minerals to enhance their environmental applicability.

The bacterium Comamonas terrigena strain HJ-2 has been reported as a nitrate-dependent iron-oxidizing bacterium, surprisingly with Fe(III) reduction ability. The control of iron redox cycling by the strain HJ-2 in the Fe(II)-Fe(III) co-existing system is mysterious and worthy of exploration. The present study demonstrates that HJ-2 utilizes nitrate as an electron acceptor to rapidly oxidize Fe(II), with negligible Fe(III) reduction, under neutral anaerobic conditions in a co-existing Fe2+ and ferrihydrite system. Nitrate significantly influences the iron transformation mediated by HJ-2. The final conversion ratio of Fe(II) increased from 27.94% to 96.67%, and the bio-oxidation rate of Fe(II) escalated from 0.000143 to 0.013 h⁻¹ as nitrate concentrations rose from 0.1 to 10 mM. X-ray diffraction results indicated that in the absence of HJ-2, goethite was the sole product, regardless of the nitrate concentration. While in the presence of HJ-2, the minerals formed transitioned from crystalline goethite and lepidocrocite to amorphous or weakly crystalline minerals with increasing nitrate concentration. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the morphology of the final mineral formed under high nitrate conditions resembled ferrihydrite, with higher carbon content on the mineral surface at elevated nitrate concentrations, suggesting enhanced production of bio-iron oxides and increased adsorption capacity for aqueous Fe(II). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed higher Fe(II) content on the amorphous minerals surface than goethite. This work provides new insights into microbial-mediated Fe-N cycling in natural environments, highlighting the significance of nitrate in driving iron redox processes and the iron mineral transformation by strain HJ-2.

Fenton oxidation technology is a widely-used advanced oxidation technology. However, the generation of hydroxyl radicals is restrained by the sluggish recovery of Fe(II), thus affecting its long-lasting performance for water decontamination. Here, a novel niobium carbide (Nb 2 C) MXene material was applied as a green co-catalyst. Nb 2 C MXene can significantly promote Fenton reactions to produce hydroxyl radicals for degrading dimethyl phthalate (DMP) with high efficiency and high stability for long-term operation, which outperforms than various reported co-catalysts. Meanwhile, the Nb 2 C/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system is capable of non-selectively degrading a wide spectrum of refractory pollutants. Mechanism investigation reveals that Nb 2 C MXene as an electron donor can straight reduce Fe(III), meanwhile mediate electron shuttle from Fe(II) to H 2 O 2 to strongly expedite the generation of hydroxyl radicals. In addition, four main degradation routes of DMP were proposed. Therefore, this study offers an updated and valid strategy for the refractory organic pollutants elimination by coupling Nb 2 C MXene and Fenton oxidation.
