Polymer dots of DASA-functionalized polyethyleneimine: Synthesis, visible light/pH responsiveness, and their applications as chemosensors

Dan Zhong,Ziquan Cao,Bo Wu,Qing Zhang,Guojie Wang

Visible light/pH dual-responsive polymer dots (PDs) were facilely prepared from branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized with donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). The synthesized polymer dots were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 1 H NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The emission peak of the DASA-PEI polymer dots changed as the excitation wavelength varied from 360   nm to 520   nm. The strongest fluorescence emission was located around 522   nm upon 420   nm excitation. Moreover, the DASA-PEI polymer dots exhibited a typical photo-responsive behavior. After visible light irradiation, the triene of DASAs isomerized to the cyclopentenone form. Interestingly, the DASA-PEI polymer dots also responded to acid and alkali and showed a reversible transition between the triene and cyclopentenone isomers. It is demonstrated that the prepared DASA-PEI polymer dots could be applied as a turn-off chemosensor for the rapid and selective detection of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous solutions with detection limits of 10.1   nM and 1.3   nM, respectively.

A highly sensitive multi-catalytic sensing system for organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides based on the peroxidase-like activity of ferric ions

Yan Xu,Tao Yu,Xiao-Qiong Wu,Jiang-Shan Shen,Hong-Wu Zhang

Developing rapid, efficient and highly sensitive sensing systems for organophosphorus (OPs) and organochlorine pesticides is important due to their potential damage to human health. Considering that Fe3+ ions were recently found to have much higher peroxidase-like activity than that of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles, in this work, a novel and highly sensitive multi-catalytic sensing system has been successfully developed for OPs and organochlorine pesticides, on the basis of the color reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl benzidine (TMB) driven by Fe3+ ions, together with two enzymatic catalytic systems of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and choline oxidase (CHO). Sub nM level limits of detection could be achieved for four tested OPs and organochlorine pesticides. Furthermore, several fruit/vegetable samples were successfully employed for evaluating this established sensing system.

A reduction-oxidation strategy modulated fluorescence of MXene quantum dots for ultrasensitive Fe3+ sensing

Wenjuan Zhang,Chunhui Li,Xiangyue Yang,Zhenghao Song,Youliang Wang,Yiming Zhang,Zhiqi Feng,Peiqing La

The escalating threat of heavy metal pollution to both environmental integrity and public health underscores the urgent need to develop accessible, and highly efficient analytical methods. In this study, we propose a facile reduction-oxidation strategy for fabricating MXene quantum dots (r-MQDs) with high sensitivity toward Fe 3+ detection. The synthesis process involves the oxidative cleavage of MXene via H 2 O 2 -assisted hydrothermal treatment to yield quantum dots, followed by chemical reduction with NaBH 4 . The r-MQDs exhibit excellent fluorescence quantum yields, attributed to both strong quantum confinement effects and reduced non-radiative losses. Fe 3+ efficiently suppresses the fluorescence of r-MQDs through a cooperative mechanism where static quenching and the inner filter effect operate in tandem. The fluorescent probe exhibits a linear response to Fe 3+ in the range of 0.8 - 1.0 mM, along with a notably low detection limit of 5 nM. This study elucidates the selectivity mechanism of MQDs as fluorescent probes for metal ions and broadens the application prospects of MXene-based quantum dots for sensing.

Green Fe3+-activated near-infrared phosphor: energy transfer-driven luminescence enhancement and multifunctional applications

Chao Wei,Jie Zhang,Jingyu Ran

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes have been widely applied in biomedical imaging, night-vision security surveillance, and nondestructive inspection. Owing to its natural abundance, low cost, and environmental benignity, Fe 3+ is regarded as a promising activator for the development of broadband NIR phosphors. However, related studies remain relatively limited. In this study, an Fe 3+ -activated Sr 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 phosphor is successfully synthesized. Under excitation at 353 nm, the phosphor exhibits broadband NIR emission covering the range of 800–1400 nm, with an emission peak centered at approximately 956 nm, a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 183 nm, and an internal quantum efficiency of 34%. Furthermore, Yb 3+ co-doping is introduced to construct an energy transfer system to enhance the optical performance. The energy transfer interaction between Yb 3+ and Fe 3+ not only significantly improves the thermal stability but also increases the internal quantum efficiency to 75.5%. In addition, NIR pc-LED devices fabricated using the Sr 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 : Fe 3+ phosphor demonstrate promising application potential in venous imaging, night-vision security surveillance, information encryption, and nondestructive inspection.

A mechanically robust self-healing polysiloxane via Fe3+-dopamine metal coordination for flexible sensors

Yu Zhou,Youcheng Huang,Hangzhou Wang,Chenguang Kong,Shumin Jiang,Guohao Zhang,Yanting Tang,Chaolin Wang,Jun Shi,Kun Wu

In recent years, wearable electronic devices based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have garnered increasing attention. However, the limited mechanical strength of PDMS itself and its poor self-healing properties after prolonged use restrict its application in flexible sensors. Here, we propose a novel approach to successfully prepare a self-healing polydimethylsiloxane material (Si-DOPAx-Fey) with enhanced mechanical properties by introducing a metallic coordination network. The obtained Si-DOPAx-Fey exhibited a maximum tensile strength of 652 kPa and an elongation at break of 133%. When fracture damage occurred, Si-DOPA3-Fe0.6 achieved a self-healing efficiency of 90.3% after 8 hours of repair at room temperature. Based on Si-DOPA3-Fe0.6, we combined it with AgNWs to prepare Si-DOPA3-Fe0.6-AgNWs for measuring human physiological activity in real time. According to experimental results, Si-DOPA3-Fe0.6-AgNWs had a sensitivity of 4.6 and a linear response coefficient R2 of 0.999 within the 0–60% strain range, indicating good stability and sensitivity for this flexible sensor. This research not only advances the development of polysiloxanes in flexible electronic sensing but also holds promise for broad applications in medical health monitoring and human–machine interface fields, laying the foundation for next-generation smart material development.

Fe3+ regulated synthesis of Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe): nanoarchitectonics and enhanced photo-Fenton activity

Wang Hui,Liu Jun,Chang Meng-Jie,Li Jia,Feng Qing,Jia Bo

The weak light absorption, low charge separation efficiency, and poor recyclability severely restrict the practical application of heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst MIL-100(Fe). Herein, we report the synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) with tunable structures via hydrothermal growth, using Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O and H 3 btc as precursors on an Ag/Fe 3 O 4 template. Notably, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O serves dual roles: it acts as a precursor for MIL-100(Fe) formation and as an oxidizing agent to remove the Ag template. The microstructure of the resulting catalyst can be precisely regulated by varying the Fe 3⁺ dosage. By optimizing the Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O dosage, the optimal hollow Fe 3 O 4 /MIL-100(Fe) catalyst is obtained, which exhibits excellent dispersion, a distinct core/shell structure, a larger specific surface area (312.6 m 2 /g), a smaller average pore diameter (4.9298 nm), strong magnetic separability, and superior photo-Fenton degradation performance (95.6% within 30 min). After 4 consecutive cycles, the degradation efficiency toward Rhodamine B (RhB) remains above 90%, demonstrating outstanding cycling stability. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirms that both ·O 2 ⁻ and ·OH are the dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for the catalytic degradation reactions.

A Multifunctional Fe3+-Activated Garnet Phosphor Enabling Near-Infrared Imaging and Photochromic Information Encryption

Siyu Guo,Chao Tang,Rongfei Wei,Xiangling Tian,Fangfang Hu,Hai Guo

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are emerging as compact and energy-efficient light sources for next-generation optical technologies. Nevertheless, the development of Cr 3+ -free NIR phosphors that simultaneously deliver wideband luminescence, superior biocompatibility, and tunable photo-physical properties remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose novel La 3 Sc 2 Ga 3 O 12 :Fe 3+ phosphors featuring broadband NIR emission enabled by crystal-field engineering. Precise regulation of Fe 3+ concentration markedly reinforces the excitation band centered at 417 nm, ensuring high compatibility with commercial LED chips. Furthermore, Li + incorporation heals the lattice environment and suppresses non-radiative relaxation, substantially amplifying NIR emission. The optimized composition exhibits robust thermal stability, retaining 57.45% of its emission intensity at 423 K, together with pronounced and reversible photochromic behavior. Integrating it with a 420 nm chip yields a high-power NIR pc-LED prototype. The material demonstrates multifunctional optical responsiveness suitable for secure photonic encoding and intelligent sensing platforms. These findings establish valuable insights for design of new NIR materials and the development of advanced intelligent devices.

Decoding Balanced High-Performance in Fe3+ NIR Phosphors via Site-Selectivity for Versatile Applications

Peng Wang,Anfei Chen,Mekhrdod S. Kurboniyon,Dilshod Nematov,Bibo Lou,Rongxin Tang,Qi Wang,Dan Zhang,Qiaoling Chen,Chong-Geng Ma

The development of efficient and stable near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted LEDs has significantly advanced NIR photonics. However, widely reported Cr3+-activated NIR luminescent materials remain limited in performance and fail to satisfy the increasing demands of diverse applications. Herein, a Cr-free alternative utilizing a rigid garnet host is proposed. Through the design and synthesis of a novel Fe3+-activated phosphor, Ca3Sn2Ga2SiO12:Fe3+ (CSGS: Fe3+), efficient broadband NIR emission centered at 770 nm and spanning 600–1100 nm is successfully realized. This material achieves an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 62.38% and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 46.56%, while maintaining 62% of its emission intensity at 423 K. Its overall balanced performance exceeds that of most reported Fe3+-based systems. Supported by first-principles calculations, this study systematically clarifies the electronic structure, mechanical properties, site preference, and valence stability of Fe3+, elucidates the excited-state transition behavior, and proposes a crystal-field-induced site-selective luminescence mechanism. This work not only presents a high-performance Fe3+-activated NIR phosphor, but also provides theoretical insights and practical guidance for material design and optimization in solid-state lighting, nondestructive testing, and spectral analysis.

Breaking the Fe3+ regeneration bottleneck in aerated electro-Fenton systems through reductive pyrite activation

Jie Yu,Linxuan Sheng,Hengtong Liu,Tong Liu,Chuanping Feng,Nan Chen,Weiwu Hu

H 2 O 2 supply alone did not determine electro-Fenton efficiency. • Pyrite outperformed soluble Fe 2+ by sustaining Fe 3+ reduction. • Cathodic activation generated reactive Fe-S/sulfur mediators. • ·OH contributed to BPA oxidation and toxicity attenuation. Electro-Fenton systems are limited not only by H 2 O 2 production but also by the slow regeneration of Fe 2+ from Fe 3+ , which restricts continuous hydroxyl radical formation. Here, we developed an aerated electro-Fenton system coupled with natural pyrite and show that its high activity originates from matched H 2 O 2 supply and pyrite-sustained iron cycling. The aEF-pyrite system achieved nearly complete bisphenol A removal within 60 min, with an apparent rate constant of 0.052 min −1 , which was 26.0, 13.0 and 6.5 times higher than those of the electrochemical system, aerated electrochemical system and conventional aEF-Fe 2+ system, respectively. Cathodic aeration promoted in situ H 2 O 2 accumulation, whereas pyrite maintained a higher Fe 2+ concentration and suppressed Fe 3+ accumulation, enabling continuous conversion of H 2 O 2 into ·OH. Surface and solution analyses showed that pyrite participated in Fe and S redox transformation rather than acting only as a passive iron source. DFT-based electronic-structure analyses further indicate that electron injection into pyrite preferentially weakens S S antibonding states, providing a basis for reductive sulfur activation and the formation of reactive Fe-S/sulfur intermediates. These intermediates can serve as a mobile electron-transfer pool for Fe 3+ reduction, bypassing the sluggish H 2 O 2 -mediated regeneration pathway. The system also showed broad pH adaptability, reduced iron precipitation, effective toxicity attenuation and good performance in complex water matrices. This work identifies reductive pyrite activation as a mechanism for sustaining Fe cycling in aerated electro-Fenton chemistry and provides a practical route for improving Fenton oxidation through mineral-mediated Fe 3+ regeneration. Mussel-Inspired Self-Healing Waterborne Polyurethanes With Catechol–Fe3+ Coordination and Dynamic Disulfide Bonds

Ke Pan,Jinlin Li,Li Liu,Guangfeng Wu

Conventional self-healing waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) often suffer from an intrinsic trade-off between mechanical robustness and healing efficiency. To address this limitation, inspired by the hierarchical structure and dynamic interactions found in marine mussel byssus, a dual dynamic network WPU was synthesized via step-growth polymerization by integrating dopamine-derived catechol groups and aromatic disulfide bonds. Subsequently, F e C l 3 FeCl 3 $$ {\mathrm{FeCl}}_3 $$ was introduced to provide Fe 3+ species capable of forming additional reversible coordination interactions with oxygen-containing groups in the polyurethane network, including catechol groups and potentially DMPA-derived carboxylates. The combined presence of these reversible interactions may contribute to network rearrangement and energy dissipation during deformation, thereby improving mechanical performance while retaining self-healing capability. Experimental results demonstrate that at an optimal F e C l 3 FeCl 3 $$ {\mathrm{FeCl}}_3 $$ content of 0.1 wt%, the DWPU- F e C l 3 FeCl 3 $$ {\mathrm{FeCl}}_3 $$ -0.1% film exhibited a tensile strength of 29.8 MPa, an elongation at break of 553.2%, and a toughness of 83.3 MJ m −3 . Furthermore, the damaged film recovered 98.2% of its original tensile strength after thermal healing at 60°C for 2 h. These results demonstrate that the combined incorporation of multiple reversible interactions provides a feasible strategy for achieving a favorable balance between mechanical performance and self-healing capability under the investigated conditions. Graphical A mussel-inspired waterborne polyurethane incorporating aromatic disulfide bonds and Fe 3+ –catechol coordination is developed to balance mechanical performance and self-healing capability. An optimal Fe 3+ content enhances strength, toughness, and energy dissipation while maintaining high healing efficiency, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining multiple reversible interactions within a dynamic polyurethane network.

Sensitive and selective chemosensor for Fe3+ detection using carbon dots synthesized by microwave method

Xiang Deng,Huan Yang,An-Jie Gong,Xiao-Mei Huang,Lu Li

The excessive accumulation of heavy metal ions can pose significant hazards to human health and the environment, hence the detection and removal of heavy metal ions from water bodies are essential. Generally, carbon dots (CDs) are used as a good fluorescence sensor to sense heavy metal ions. In this study, using one-step microwave method, CDs were synthesized with the traditional Chinese medicine Radix Vladimiriae as a carbon source for the first time. These CDs display excellent fluorescence properties with an average particle size of approximately 5.9 nm and a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) about 0.15. The fluorescence emission spectra were recorded at different excitation peaks with the highest intensity emission peak observed at 465 nm with an excitation wavelength of 360 nm. Interestingly, fluorescence intensities of CDs greatly decreased in the existence of Fe 3+ . Under optimum conditions, a good linear relationship was observed between ( I 0 - I )/ I and the Fe 3+ concentration in the range of 0.2–200 μM with the correlation coefficient ( R 2 ) of 0.9992 and the limit of detection (LOD) of 62 nM. Finally, after adding Fe 3+ at concentrations of 5 μM, 20 μM, and 50 μM to real water samples, the relative standard deviation and spiked recovery rates were 1.2 %-2.7 % and 99.2 %-101.6 %, respectively. Thus, a novel method for rapid detection of Fe 3+ were successfully discovered.

Synchronization of Ti3C2 MXene/Fe3+ with sodium persulfate for the degradation of reactive dyes

Li Wanxin,Shu Dawu,An Fangfang,Liu Ruigang,Shan Juchuan,Han Bo,Cao Shaolei

Rapid activation of sodium persulfate (SPS) for the degradation of C.I. Reactive Red 218 (RR218) was achieved using Ti 3 C 2 MXene reduction of trace Fe 3+ . The degradation rate of RR218 reached 97.7% using a mixture containing 3 g L −1 of SPS, 3.35 mg L −1 of Fe 3+ and 60 mg L −1 of MXene stirred at 25 °C for 30 min. The intense reduction of Ti 3 C 2 MXene triggers the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle thereby accelerating the activation of SPS. When reactive dyes were degraded by Fe 3+ /SPS/MXene process, ·OH played a major role. The dye degradation capacity of the Fe 3+ /SPS/MXene process decreased after 5 cycles of recycling. In addition, the wastewater treated under these conditions resulted in high dyeing efficiencies in reuse experiments. This study not only improves the understanding of the catalytic reaction of MXene but also provides a wastewater treatment and reuse process with low metal consumption and high efficiency.
