Phase change materials (PCMs) offer great potential for realizing zero-energy thermal management due to superior cold storage and stable phase change temperatures. However, the widespread use of PCMs is consistently impeded by issues such as liquid leakage and solid rigidity. Here, we present a simple yet effective strategy for developing highly flexible polymer-based phase change materials. Our approach involves creating a dual three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked network of acrylamide (AM) and sodium alginate (SA) within a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. The synergy between H-bonds and AM-SA networks significantly enhances the mechanical strength, thermal stability, and leakage resistance of PVA@AM-SA. Our research offers a promising approach to designing phase change materials with both high latent heat capacity and exceptional mechanical strength, making them ideal for use in wearable thermal management applications.

Abstract Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3–) is highly desired for the synthesis of value-added nitrogenous compounds, where precise selectivity control remains as a key challenge to be tackled. In addition to catalyst composition, electrolyte microenvironment offers another feasible handle for selectivity regulation, where the interfacial H-bond network could be effectively tuned for directed H-atom transfer for selectivity manipulation. Herein, two molecules with distinct molecular configurations, oxalic acid (OA) and acetic acid (HOAc), were introduced into the electrolyte microenvironment to investigate the in-depth structure-functional relationship between electrolyte structure and electrocatalytic NO3– selectivity, where vicinal H-bond acceptors (carboxylic groups) makes OA an ideal “molecular glue” to fortify the H-bond network for H atom transfer. As a result, OA significantly facilitates electrocatalytic NO3– hydrogenation, leading to efficient production of NH2OH (219 μmol·cm–2·h–1, 78.2%). Contrastingly, partially hydrogenated NO2– is characterized as the major product upon HOAc introduction (284.4 μmol·cm–2·h–1, 82.4%), which lacks vicinal carboxylic groups for H-bond network fortification. The NH2OH and NO2– products were effectively converted to formaldoxime and nitrophenol, which extended the directed electrocatalytic NO3– conversion toward synthetic applications.

C-H functionalization shows significant potential for upgrading low-cost semi-crystalline polyolefins. However, current homogeneous functionalization methods encounter an inherent trade-off between crystallinity and functionalization, severely limiting the application of resulting functional polyolefins in both emerging and previously established fields. Here, we demonstrate an electrostatic-confinement-induced C-H functionalization strategy that decouples the functionalization from the crystallinity of resultant functionalized polyolefins in a well-controlled manner. During functionalization, multivalent cations spatially confine electronegative polar functional groups within amorphous domains through electrostatic interactions. This enables highly selective functionalization of amorphous regions at temperature approaching the melting point, yielding functionalized polyethylene exhibiting a higher crystalline fraction, larger crystallite dimensions, and distinct nanoscale sheet-like aggregates of incorporated polar groups. These structural improvements elevate melting temperatures and impart mechanical property enhancement to a typical prototype. This strategy highlights the potential for overcoming traditional crystallinity-functionalization trade-offs in post-polymerization functionalization and offers promising avenues for advanced materials development with target properties.

Silicon-based anode materials attract ever-increasing attention owing to their high theoretical capacity. However, their practical application is significantly hindered by the dramatic volume change during the charge/discharge process, during which not only the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) but also the electrode might be ruined. Here, we propose a H-bond network-regulated binder by introducing low-molecular-weight cross-linkers, lithium oxalate and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD), into alginate (Alg). The balance between the binding strength and Li ion diffusion is realized through the control of the ratio between them. Lithium oxalate and α-CD can effectively regulate the H-bond network of the binder by forming intermolecular dynamic H bonds with Alg and reducing the intramolecular ones. Although the hybrid binder shows lower adhesion force than Alg, better electrode integrity is obtained during the charge/discharge process. Meanwhile, Li+ transportation is facilitated due to extra Li+ supplied by lithium oxalate, thereby achieving better rate capability.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is widely used as a representative transition metal oxides (TMOs) catalyst for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, the low stability, low selectivity, low ammonia (NH 3 ) yield and high overpotential of TiO 2 towards NRR strongly restricted its application in NRR. Here, we firstly add H to the lattice to synthesize a black TiO 2−x with oxygen vacancies (OVs) (B-TiO 1.8 ) for electrocatalytic NRR. After we optimized the amount of H and OVs, the NH 3 yield and stability can achieve 31.6 μg h −1 mg cat −1 and 100 h at − 0.1 V ( vs . RHE), respectively, the faradaic efficiency (FE) can achieve 47.7% at 0 V ( vs . RHE). In situ FTIR / ESR / XPS / TPD illustrate that OVs can promote the adsorption and activation of nitrogen (N 2 ), and lattice H can increase the number of OVs and stabilize them, suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and promote the hydrogenation of N 2 .

This article reports on the high-efficiency preparation of few layers h-BN nanosheets (BNNSs) by a high-pressure homogenizer. Then, the BNNSs/chitosan microspheres (BN-CS-M) are finally prepared by mixing BNNSs with chitosan under alkaline conditions. The BNNSs dispersion is investigated by UV-vis spectrophotometer and Transmission Electron Microscopy. In addition, we use Scanning Electron Microscopy and Laser particle size analyzer to characterize the microscopic and macroscopic morphology of BN-CS-M composites. Raman spectroscopy and Specific surface area testing are also used to explore the intrinsic properties of BN-CS-M. Thermal gravimetric analysis shows that composites with high content of BNNSs possess higher thermal stability. The results show that BNNSs is dispersed in the network of chitosan microspheres, and the higher the rate of centrifugation, the fewer BNNSs dispersed in the microspheres. The chitosan microspheres composite with pore diameters in the range of 1.7–2.9 nm belongs to the type IV adsorption curve.

Novel films composed of Haematococcus pluvialis residue (HPR), chitosan (CS), citric acid (CA), glycerol (GL), and calcium chloride (CaCl₂) were developed to improve strawberry preservation. The rheological, structural, and functional properties of film-forming aqueous solutions (CS/CA, CS/CA/GL, CS/CA/GL/Ca, CS/CA/GL/Ca/HPR) were analyzed. It revealed HPR-induced shear-thinning behavior ( η = 2260 Pa·s) and enhanced rigidity (G'' = 750.51 Pa at 100 rad/s) via hydrogen bonding and Ca²⁺ crosslinking. FTIR and UV-vis spectra confirmed molecular interactions between carboxyl groups of HPR and amino residues of CS. The films with 0.6% HPR exhibited superior mechanical strength (tensile strength: 12.16 MPa; elongation at break: 135.36%), reduced water vapor permeability (1.14 × 10 -10 gm ⁻¹ s ⁻¹ Pa ⁻¹ ), and antioxidant activity (73.16% DPPH scavenging) than CS film. Antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli peaked at 0.8% HPR. The weight loss of strawberry was reduced by using the HPR film (13.08% vs. control: 29.5%), retained ascorbic acid (19.98 mg/100 g vs. control: 6.75 mg/100 g). The shelf life of strawberries was extended by 30 days, which is 15 days longer than that of those wrapped with polyethylene film. The polysaccharides, astaxanthin, and algal proteins in HPR improved barrier properties, oxidative stability, and microbial resistance. These results highlight the potential of HPR films as sustainable, multifunctional packaging to extend fruit shelf life.

The Ce-modified OMS-2 catalyst (Ce x -OMS-2) was synthesized by the hydrothermal synthesis method, after which its catalytic efficacy in the selective reduction of NO by CO was assessed. The experiments showed that Ce 0.08 -OMS-2 was capable of 100% NO conversion between 175 and 300 °C when 0.05%NO, 0.1%CO, 5%O 2 and N 2 were used as equilibrium gases, and the N 2 selectivity peaked at 93.2% at 175 °C. Additionally, Ce 0.08 -OMS-2 exhibits good sulfur resistance in the presence of 0.02% SO 2 and maintains more than 88% NO conversion at 175–275 °C. By using BET, XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, and In situ DRIFTS to characterize the catalysts, the effects of doping the active metal Ce on the physicochemical characteristics of OMS-2 catalysts were under investigation. In conclusion, the improvement of the low-temperature activity of the Ce x -OMS-2 catalyst is facilitated by lower agglomeration and crystallinity , larger specific surface area, smaller average pore size, enhanced surface oxygen vacancies, increased Mn 4+ concentration, and richer Brønsted acid. Reaction gas adsorbed species and intermediates on the catalyst surface were dynamically captured during In situ DRIFTS experiments. The CO-SCR reaction of the catalyst was found to follow the E-R mechanism below 200 ℃ and the L-H mechanism at 200–350 ℃.

Sulfonated carbon materials are promising heterogeneous Brønsted acid catalysts for biomass valorization, but the facile construction of carbon frameworks with accessible acid sites remains challenging. Herein, a sulfonated fructose-based porous nanosheet carbon (SPC) was synthesized via a facile and energy-efficient two-step strategy involving P 2 O 5 -assisted rapid self-propagating carbonization and concentrated sulfuric acid sulfonation, and subsequently employed for fructose dehydration to HMF in a low-boiling 1,4-dioxane/H 2 O solvent system. During carbonization, P 2 O 5 simultaneously promoted fructose carbonization and directed the formation of a porous nanosheet architecture, avoiding conventional high-temperature activation processes. The resulting porous nanosheets provided abundant sites for -SO 3 H grafting and enhanced Brønsted acid site accessibility. Consequently, SPC exhibited efficient catalytic performance for the selective dehydration of fructose, affording an HMF yield of 70.1% at 140 ℃ for 30 min. Moreover, SPC efficiently converted concentrated fructose (1.0 g fructose) to HMF with a 59.4% yield and exhibited moderate recyclability. This work provides a facile strategy for constructing biomass-derived sulfonated carbon solid acids with effectively utilized Brønsted acid sites for biomass upgrading.

Chemotherapy is a widely used cancer treatment modality, while the complex tumor microenvironment (TME) significantly impedes drug delivery and deep tissue penetration. An MR molecular imaging drug-loaded nanomotor has been developed to achieve deep tumor tissue penetration and imaging-guided drug delivery, enabling combined photothermal and chemotherapeutic treatment of pancreatic cancer. A Janus-type nanomotor (Au@H-MP NMs) was fabricated via magnetron sputtering for application in photothermal therapy. Doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded onto one hemisphere of the nanomotor, achieving combined photothermal and chemotherapeutic treatment. Additionally, the nanomotor exhibits dual responsiveness to pH and glutathione (GSH), facilitating the controlled release of DOX within deep tumor tissues. Studies confirmed the nanomotors excellent biosafety, strong photothermal conversion capability, and effective induction of apoptosis. Tumor tissue penetration was validated through in vitro migration and infiltration assays, while in vivo experiments demonstrated significant tumor suppression and enhanced drug accumulation. Moreover, MR imaging technology enables real-time monitoring of nanomotor dynamics. These findings suggest that the synthesized Janus-type MR molecular imaging nanomotor offers a promising strategy for multimodal treatment of pancreatic cancer with significant clinical potential.

The present study developed a prolonged oxidizable sulfur(IV)/ferrate(VI) system for the generation of hydroxyl radical ( OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 − ) within 120 min, and proposed a reaction mechanism. In the presence of H + in solution, the S(IV)/Fe(IV) system provided excellent oxidation performance of refractory organics O,O-dimethyl-S-methylcarbamoyl methyl phosphorothioate (dimethoate, a widely used organophosphorus pesticide) within 120 min. The degradation efficiency of dimethoate in the bisulfite/Fe(VI) system (e.g., 90.06% dimethoate) was higher than that in the sulfite/Fe(VI) system (e.g., 51.03% dimethoate), while Fe(VI) alone degraded 27.81% of dimethoate. In the S(IV)/Fe(VI) system, the active species consisted of Fe(VI) (including the highly-reactive iron-based intermediate species, i.e. Fe(V) and Fe(IV)), OH and SO 4 − , with OH being identified as the main active species, contributing more than half of the total. The degradation mechanism of dimethoate in the S(IV)/Fe(VI) system mainly included the cleavage of the S-P bond, C-S bond and the oxidation of the P = S bond. Two plausible degradation pathways were proposed based on the detected transformation products. Dimethoate could be efficiently degraded when the [bisulfite]/[Fe(VI)] molar ratio was 4:1 with a low Fe(VI) dosage (218 µM), the changes in HA and HCO 3 − concentrations affected the transformation of dimethoate, the presence of Cl − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − had a negligible effect, and the S(IV)/Fe(VI) system performed well in real waters. The S(IV)/Fe(VI) system has excellent oxidation performance for the removal of organic pollutants in water, with a final pH (pH = 6.6) close to neutral and ultimate products of SO 4 2− and Fe(OH) 3 , which has great potential for engineering applications.

Membrane filtration is regarded as one of the promising technologies for water treatment. However, insufficient micropollutants removal and membrane fouling still limited the further application. Herein, this study engineered a novel membrane hybrid system integrating typical pharmaceuticals removal and membrane self-cleaning by assembled layered MXene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). By doping a small amount of MXene into h-BN (mass ratio of 1 to 10), the synergetic process of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation were achieved. Based on experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, the chemisorption-photodegradation performance of the membrane hybrid system assembled with 1/10 MXene@h-BN was significantly enhanced due to the termination group and conductive property of MXene. In addition, trimethoprim (TMP) degradation by the above membrane followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, indicating pollutants removal initiated not only on the membrane surface but also in the bulk solution under simulated solar irradiation. This phenomenon was attributed to the generation of •OH and 1 O 2 by forming Ohmic contact with altered internal band structure. The durability and practical experiments with secondary effluent from local wastewater treatment were also tested. The exceptional self-cleaning performance of the membrane hybrid system assembled with 1/10 MXene@h-BN was demonstrated by lower membrane fouling and maintaining durability even after five cycles. Furthermore, the performance (both pollutants removal and flux) of the modified membrane for secondary effluent treatment was also considerable, validating its potential for practical application. Owing to the excellent features, the membrane assembled with MXene@h-BN is anticipated to be an ideal candidate for advanced wastewater treatment.
