Although metal oxide nanofibers (MO-NFs) based field-effect transistors (FETs) prepared by electrospinning have gained great attention, it is still challenging to develop MO-NFs directly on flexible substrates such as polyimide (PI) to achieve a high flexibility due to the high annealing temperature. In this work, using a UV pretreatment and a subsequent “combustion synthesis” process, high-quality Pr-doped In2O3 (InPrO) electrospun NFs were successfully fabricated on a flexible PI substrate at a relatively low temperature (380 °C). It was found that the InPrO-based flexible FET (f-FET) prepared by UV pretreatment and low annealing temperature not only has a good interfacial adhesion but also show a good flexibility. When the f-FET was wrapped around the rigid cylindrical rod with a radius of 5 mm, it exhibited good performance including a high μFE of 2.12 cm2 V−1 s−1, a large Ion/Ioff of ∼108, and an excellent cycling stability (1000 bending cycles). This low-temperature processing route will certainly contribute to the future flexible electronics manufacturing.

The development of heterojunction composites with core–shell structure could effectively facilitate the separation of carriers. In this work, a novel In 2 O 3 -SnS 2 (IOS) core–shell heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized for the efficient photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), namely, the In 2 O 3 nanorods were obtained through successive hydrothermal and carbonization process using urea and glucose as template. Then, SnS 2 nanosheets were successfully in situ coated onto In 2 O 3 nanorods. The spectroscopic characterization and photo-electrochemistry test indicated that the IOS core–shell heterojunction could effectively accelerate the separation and transport of carriers and suppress the recombination of carriers. The photocatalytic performance of IOS was evaluated by photocatalytic reduction Cr(VI). The results showed that IOS-4 samples almost completely removed Cr(VI) (20 mg/L), within 90 min under visible light, which was superior to pure In 2 O 3 and SnS 2 . Furthermore, IOS samples also possess excellent stability, the removal efficiency was still maintained at 90% after five cycles. This work provided a reliable method for designing core–shell heterojunctions for the photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) under visible light.

Isoprene is a typical biomarker for advanced fibrosis and can be used to screen and grade chronic liver disease (CLD). To detect trace isoprene, the high specific surface area (77.38 m 2 /g), porous flower-like In 2 O 3 hierarchical microsphere material was prepared by simple hydrothermal method. In addition, the sensor based on synthetic flower-like In 2 O 3 microspheres was prepared and gas sensing properties were investigated. The results showed that flower-like In 2 O 3 nanomaterials had the highest response to isoprene at 190 °C. The response time was 53 s and repeatability was good. The relatively low operating temperature (190 °C) could extend the working life and also facilitate the portable application of the sensor. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibited selectivity over other typical biomarkers (ammonia, ethanol, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide). The unmodified pure flower-like In 2 O 3 material could detect 5 ppb of isoprene at 190 °C and the logarithm of the response had good linear relationship with the logarithm of the concentration. Thus, this flower-like In 2 O 3 material was promising to be developed into the portable breath isoprene detector that could be integrated into a micro system for noninvasive rapid screening and grading of CLD.

Triethylamine (TEA), a typical kind of volatile organic compound, is widely used as an industrial solvent, which is a threat to environment and human health. In this paper, a novel In2O3 nanocube gas sensing material with high sensing performances was synthesized through a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The gas sensing test results are satisfactory such that the single phase of In2O3 nanocubes even exhibits a quite higher response of 12–10 ppm of TEA at a lower temperature (180 °C) than many conventional In2O3-based complexes and maintains high consistency in morphology and stability after the consecutive tests of 2 months. This work provides a facile and quite effective gas sensing material for TEA gas monitoring with high sensitivity and stability and good selectivity at lower working temperature that can be prepared in batch and further used as templates.

Supported Pt catalysts have been extensively investigated for CO2 hydrogenation with methane and CO as the principal products. In this work, a Pt/In2O3 catalyst prepared with decomposition precipitation was tested for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. The Pt/In2O3 catalyst exhibited a highly improved activity towards CO2 hydrogenation, with methanol selectivity of ca. 100% at temperatures below 225 °C, 74% at 275 °C and 54% at 300 °C, respectively, compared to the pure In2O3 catalyst. This represents the highest methanol selectivity reported on Pt catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation. The stability of the Pt/In2O3 catalyst at elevated temperatures has also been higher than that of the pure In2O3 catalyst, indicated by the methanol formation rate decreasing only to 95% of the initial rate after 5 h in the reaction stream and remaining largely constant thereafter. In contrast, the pure In2O3 catalyst loses 20% of the initial methanol formation rate after 9 h in the reaction stream. The characterization of the catalysts confirms that the Pt nanoparticles are well dispersed on In2O3 with a particle size below 3 nm. The strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) between Pt and In2O3 improves the stability of the catalyst and prevents the over-reduction of In2O3. The synergy between the supported Pt nanoparticles and In2O3 balances the hydrogen activation and the density of the surface oxygen vacancies in In2O3, resulting in the high activity for CO2 hydrogenation and enhanced stability of the Pt/In2O3 catalyst.

Inspired by the multimodal information processing mechanisms of biological visual systems, the optoelectronic synaptic transistors integrate light sensing, memory, and computation functions, offering an innovative pathway for constructing neuromorphic systems with sensing-memory-computing integration. In this work, indium oxide (In2O3) thin-film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated via a low-temperature solution process. Leveraging the persistent photoconductivity of oxide semiconductors, a dual-wavelength optoelectronic synapse capable of both light perception and information retention was designed. Under optical stimulation with 405- and 532-nm light pulses, the device successfully emulated key synaptic plasticity behaviors, including excitatory postsynaptic current (EPSC), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and spike number-dependent plasticity (SNDP). Furthermore, the device was utilized to simulate cognitive functions, such as learning-forgetting-relearning processes, Pavlovian classical conditioning, and a $3\times 3$ array-based optical memory. Benefiting from the multilevel photoelectronic memory characteristics of the device, handwritten digit recognition based on the MNIST dataset was simulated, achieving a high recognition accuracy of 95%.

The UV-enhanced sensing performance of the two-dimensional polyimide/indium oxide (2DPI/In 2 O 3 ) based sensor towards NH 3 was investigated at room temperature of 25 °C. The 2DPI/In 2 O 3 composite materials with hydrogen bond were synthesized by hydrothermal method , which is sensitive to NH 3 in the absence or presence of UV illumination. The microstructure, morphology and constituent elements of the prepared samples were characterized by SEM, TEM , XRD , XPS , FT-IR and UV–visible analysis. The as-prepared 2DPI/In 2 O 3 based sensor shows the best sensing performance compared to those of pure 2DPI and pure In 2 O 3 sensors. In terms of the sensitivity of the 2DPI/In 2 O 3 based sensor, the synergistic effect between 2DPI and In 2 O 3 leads to an enhancement of three times response of the composite sensors under UV illumination compared with the response of composite sensors without UV illumination. Particularly, the response time and recovery time of the 2DPI/In 2 O 3 based sensor towards 1 ppm NH 3 are shortened by 10 s and 20 s under 365 nm UV illumination, respectively. The significant enhancement in sensing performance is due to the formation of the heterojunction between 2DPI and In 2 O 3 . Besides, 2DPI acts as photocatalytic promoter in the 2DPI/In 2 O 3 composite. The 2DPI/In 2 O 3 based sensor is a promising candidate for UV-assisted NH 3 detection at room temperature.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials have a promising application as they can interconvert thermal energy to electrical energy directly. Oxide TE materials have attracted more attention for this application due to their high temperature stability. In this work, In2O3(ZnO)5 intrinsic superlattice ceramics with a layered structure were synthesized by reaction sintering a mixed powder of In2O3 and ZnO at 1200 °C for different holding times (t = 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 h) in air. Their thermoelectric properties including the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity, were measured from 323 to 973 K. The thermoelectric properties depended on the holding time. The highest ZT value of 0.19 at 973 K was obtained for the sample with a 12 h holding time.

Breakthrough: Ag/Cu bimetallic sensitization and UV activation enables efficient room-temp NO 2 detection. • High response (2180 to 200 ppm NO 2 ) with fast 7/10 s response/recovery at RT under UV. • High selectivity and moisture resistance, integrated into smart masks for breath-level detection. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) NO 2 gas sensors are hindered from achieving high-performance, low-power practical applications due to their slow response/recovery times and excessively high operating temperatures. To overcome these obstacles, we propose a synergistic strategy combining silver/copper (Ag/Cu) bimetallic nanoparticle surface modification with ultraviolet (UV) light activation. Using NH 2 -MIL-68 as a sacrificial template, In 2 O 3 rod-like materials were prepared via a hydrothermal method, and Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles were further decorated on their surface to construct a high-performance NO 2 sensor (Ag/Cu-In 2 O 3 ) capable of operating at room temperature. Under UV light excitation, the Ag/Cu-In 2 O 3 -1 sensor exhibited a high response of 2180 toward 200 ppm NO 2 , with response and recovery times as short as 7 s and 10 s, respectively. Moreover, the sensor showed excellent selectivity for NO 2 against various interfering gases and good humidity tolerance. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic sensitization of Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles and the photogenerated holes induced by UV illumination during response and recovery. This study highlights the potential of Ag/Cu-In 2 O 3 for room-temperature NO 2 sensing and demonstrates the effectiveness of UV excitation in boosting MOS gas sensor performance. The reliance of conventional gas sensing on surface-adsorbed oxygen limits both performance and mechanistic understanding. This work breaks from this paradigm by establishing lattice oxygen as an intrinsic reactive species in the sensing process. Herein, we developed a one-step solvothermal synthesis where benzimidazole serves as a dual-function agent: its weak coordination acts as a structural director to steer the formation of a square-shaped In2O3 architecture, while its in-situ released nitrogen atoms incorporate into the lattice. This synergistic design not only tailors the electronic structure but, more pivotally, enhances the reactivity of lattice oxygen to promote its efficient participation in gas-sensing reactions. The optimized sensor achieves exceptional ethanol-sensing performance, such as a high response of 715 toward 200 ppm ethanol, representing an 8.5-fold enhancement over pristine In2O3, along with fast response/recovery (2 s/24 s), excellent selectivity, and outstanding long-term stability. This work demonstrates that this synergistic doping strategy for enhancing lattice oxygen activity provides a distinct and effective pathway to advanced metal-oxide sensors.

Rapid and reliable determination of rifampicin (RIF) is important for dose optimization and therapeutic drug monitoring during tuberculosis treatment. Herein, In 2 O 3 /CdS heterojunctions were fabricated through calcination followed by in situ CdS growth and employed as an efficient photoactive interface for photoelectrochemical RIF sensing. The In 2 O 3 /CdS heterojunction enhanced photoinduced charge separation and provided an amplified photocurrent background, while RIF induced a concentration-dependent photocurrent quenching response for signal-off PEC quantification. Under optimized conditions, the proposed sensor showed a linear response to RIF over the concentration range of 0.010-75 μM, with a detection limit of 1.45 nM (S/N = 3). The sensor exhibited satisfactory selectivity against common coexisting substances, as well as good repeatability and storage stability. Accurate RIF quantification was further achieved in spiked human serum, urine, and pharmaceutical capsule samples, affording recoveries of 97.73% and 103.49% with relative standard deviations below 4.1%. This work provides a sensitive and reliable PEC platform for RIF determination in complex biological and pharmaceutical matrices.
