The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for renewable energy conversion and storage devices. However, the rational design of electrocatalysts with suitably high efficiency and stability in strongly acidic electrolytes remains a major challenge. Herein, a solid-phase synthesis strategy is developed for the preparation of Ir-Ln (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) alloy nanoparticles with uniform particle size on carbon supports as superior acidic OER catalysts. Tailoring by the rare earth (RE) elements, Ir 2 Pr achieves a maximum mass activity of 2.10 A mg −1 Ir at 300 mV overpotential and stability over 200 h at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 , which is 9.5 and 20 times higher to pure Ir nanoparticles. Furthermore, Ir 2 Pr alloy nanoparticles exhibit excellent durability in strongly acidic electrolytes. Theoretical calculations have confirmed that the OER performances are strongly related to the RE elements in the alloy, where the d-band centers show a consistent trend with the overpotential. Moreover, the highest electroactivity of Ir 2 Pr is attributed to the improved electron transfer by 4 f orbitals and the suitable binding strength of intermediates. Herein, a fundamental understanding of the lanthanide–electrochemical performance relationship is provided and will also inspire the rational design of efficient nanoscale RE alloy electrocatalysts.

Graphical The perfect ratio : Nanoporous Pt-encapsulated Ir black with an Pt/Ir mass ratio of 55/45 (Pt 55 @Ir 45 ) was synthesized by a water modified polyol process at room temperature to fabricate a bifunctional oxygen catalyst, which exhibited superior activity and durability toward ORR and OER due to the nanoporous Pt layer constructing a conductive network without hindering mass transport and protecting the inner Ir from being leached or severely oxidized. The exploitation of a bifunctional oxygen catalyst with high efficiency is crucial for a high-performance unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC). However, the existing bifunctional oxygen catalysts still suffer from low catalytic efficiency due to sluggish oxygen electrode reactions toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we report on a facile synthesis of nanoporous Pt-encapsulated Ir black with Pt/Ir mass ratio of 55/45 (Pt 55 @Ir 45 ) via a newly modified polyol process at room temperature with the aid of water. The resulting Pt 55 @Ir 45 catalyst demonstrated to be highly efficient and robust for both ORR and OER, relative to a mixture of commercial Pt and Ir black with Pt/Ir mass ratio of 50/50 (Pt 50 /Ir 50 ). Mass activity of Pt 55 @Ir 45 presented an 8.7- and 1.6-fold increase toward ORR and OER, respectively, compared with the Pt 50 /Ir 50 catalyst. The enhanced bifunctional performance was rationalized in terms of the maximized Pt utilization, achieved by the excellent dispersion of Pt nanoparticles, and the nanoporous Pt layer constructing a conductive network without impeding the transport of oxygen and water molecules. Our work demonstrates an effective means to encapsulate nanoporous Pt layers on Ir black for the fabrication of bifunctional oxygen catalysts.

Oxygen evolution reaction is one of the core half-reactions in proton-exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, but its slow reaction kinetics has been limiting the overall energy conversion efficiency (e.g., water splitting). It is urgent to develop efficient catalysts for OER in acidic media. At present, Ru-based catalysts have high activity, but their poor stability makes them difficult to be used in acidic oxygen evolution reactions. The involvement of lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) in the reaction is one of the main causes of instability in Ru-based catalysts. Herein, we synthesized SrRu 0.5 Ir 0.5 O 3 double perovskite by doping Ir into SrRuO 3 . The double perovskite displays an extraordinary OER performance with a low overpotential of 185 mV at 10 mA cm −2 current density and maintains its catalytic stability for over 50 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that the electronic synergistic effect between Ir and Ru enables the double perovskite materials with high activity. Meanwhile, the double perovskite catalyst inhibits the occurrence of the lattice oxygen mechanism during the OER, which greatly improve the catalytic stability of Ru-based perovskite materials.

Pt-based alloy nanomaterials with nanodendrites (NDs) structures are efficient electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), however their durability is greatly limited by the issue of transition metals dissolution. In this work, a facile trace Ir-doping strategy was proposed to fabricate Ir-PtZn and Ir-PtCu alloy NDs catalysts in aqueous medium, which significantly improved the electrocatalytic activity and durability for MOR. The as-prepared Ir-PtZn/Cu NDs catalysts showed distinct dendrites structures with the averaged diameter of 4.1 nm, and trace Ir doping subsequently improved the utilization of Pt atoms and promoted the oxidation efficiency of methanol. The electrochemical characterizations further demonstrated that the obtained Ir-PtZn/Cu NDs possessed enhanced mass activities of nearly 1.23 and 1.28-fold higher than those of undoped PtZn and PtCu, and approximately 2.35 and 2.67-fold higher than that of Pt/C in acid medium. More excitingly, after long-term durability test, the proposed Ir-PtZn and Ir-PtCu NDs still retained about 88.9% and 91.6% of its initial mass activities, which further highlights the key role of Ir-doping in determining catalyst performance. This work suggests that trace Ir-doping engineering could be a promising way to develop advanced electrocatalysts toward MOR for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising cancer treatment method. Traditional small-molecule photosensitizers (PSs) suffer from low intersystem crossing (ISC) ability and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), which adversely affects the luminous efficiency and singlet oxygen (1O2) yield of PSs in the aggregated state. Ir(III) complexes are promising PSs with long excited-state lifetime, good photophysical and photochemical properties and large Stokes shifts. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics could reduce the nonradiative recombination and improve the ISC ability of excited states through the restriction of the intramolecular motions in aggregated states. Accordingly, two AIE-active Ir(III) complexes Ir-1-N+ and Ir-2-N+ were successfully designed and obtained based on Schiff base ligands. Experimental results showed that Ir-1-N+ and Ir-2-N+ have good photophysical properties and the corresponding nanoparticles (NPs) have good water solubility and 1O2 generation ability. Notably, Ir-2-N+ NPs can be efficiently taken up by mouse breast cancer cells (4T1 cells) with good biocompatibility, low dark toxicity and excellent phototoxicity. This work demonstrates a versatile strategy for exploiting efficient transition metal PSs with a cationic ligand in PDT.

Oxidized single-wall carbon nanohorns (oxSWNHs) have shown great potential in drug delivery. The purpose of this study was to design an effective targeted drug delivery system (DDS) based on oxSWNHs, which could carry high dose of drug to tumor sites and improve the therapeutic efficacy with less adverse effects. OxSWNHs incorporated the anticancer drug vincristine (VCR) via physical adsorption, then wrapped DSPE-PEG-IGF-IR monoclonal antibody (mAb) through an amide liker to obtain the drug delivery system, VCR@oxSWNHs-PEG-mAb. The in vitro release behavior study indicated that the DDS had good sustained release and the cumulative release of VCR was 80% at 144 h. Compared with free VCR, the tumor targeting drug delivery efficiently enhanced the cytotoxicity in cultured MCF-7 cells in vitro , and afforded higher antitumor efficacy without obvious toxic effects to normal organs in tumor mice in vivo . In addition, the targeted DDS could reduce the toxicity of VCR to the living mice. This study demonstrated that VCR@oxSWNHs-PEG-mAb might be promising for high treatment efficacy with minimal side effects in future cancer therapy.

The hypoglycemic peptide MoHpP-2 from Moringa oleifera seeds exhibits excellent α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, but its amelioration in insulin resistant (IR) cells and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mice is still unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of MoHpP-2 on C2C12/IR cells, and gut microbiota and metabolite changes of T2DM mice using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics. MoHpP-2 within the concentration range could effectively enhance the glucose consumption levels and antioxidant capacity in C2C12/IR cells. MoHpP-2 intervention improves the blood sugar levels, liver function, and organ indices, reverses oxidative damage, and enhances the antioxidant capacity of T2DM mice. Furthermore, it increases the diversity of cecum microorganisms, decreases the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides and some pathogenic bacteria , and reshapes the gut microbial composition of T2DM mice. Moreover, the metabolomic analysis results showed that MoHpP-2 intervention might promote unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, inhibit bile acid formation, and regulate linoleic acid metabolism and amino acid metabolism related to oxidative stress, thereby improving insulin resistance and sensitivity in T2DM mice. Overall, the experimental results provide insights into the hypoglycemic effect of MoHpP-2 in vitro and in vivo and its application in hypoglycemic functional food products.

Introduction Quality evaluation of Huang-qin is significant to ensure its clinical efficacy. Objective This study aims to establish an accurate, rapid and comprehensive Huang-qin quality evaluation method to overcome the time-consuming and laborious shortcomings of traditional herbal medicine quality assessment methods. Methods The contents of baicalin, baicalein and scutellarin in Huang-qin from five different origins were analyzed by FT-IR and NIR spectra combined with multivariate data technology. The quality of Huang-qin from different origins was evaluated by TOPSIS and consistency analysis based on the content of three active ingredients. The correlation between ecological factors and the accumulation of active ingredients was explored. Results Satisfactory prediction results of PLS models were obtained. Relatively, the model based on FT-IR combined with the PLS regression method has higher R 2 and smaller RMSE than the NIR combined with the PLS method. TOPSIS and consistency analysis results showed that the quality of Huang-qin from different geographical origins was significantly different. The results showed that the quality of Huang-qin produced in Shanxi Province was the best among the five origins studied. The results also found that the quality of Huang-qin in different growing areas of the same origin was not completely consistent. The correlation study showed that altitude, sunshine duration and rainfall were the main factors that caused the quality difference of medicinal materials in different geographical origins. Conclusion This study provides a reference for the rapid quantitative analysis of the active components of herbal medicine and the quality evaluation of them.

The surface reconstruction of iridium-based derivatives (AxIryOz) was extensively demonstrated to have an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in an acidic medium. It is urgent to use various spectroscopy and computational methods to explore the electronic state changes in the surface reconstruction process. Herein, the underestimated Lu2Ir2O7 was synthesized and investigated. Four typical forms of electrochemistry impedance spectra involved in the reconstruction process revealed three dominating forms of reconstructed pyrochlore in the OER stage, including the inner intact pyrochlore, mid metastable [IrO6]–[IrO6] framework, and the outer collapse amorphous layer. The enhancing electron transport efficiency of the corner-shared [IrO6]–[IrO6] framework was revealed as a critical role in acidic systems. The density of state (DOS) for the constructed [IrO6]–[IrO6] framework corroborated the enhancement of Ir–O hybridization and the downshift of the d-band center. Additionally, we contrast the pristine and reconstruction properties of the Pr2Ir2O7, Eu2Ir2O7, and Lu2Ir2O7 in alkaline and acidic media. The DOS and the XANES results reveal the scale relationship between the O 2p band center and the intrinsic activity for bulk pyrochlore in alkaline media. The highest O 2p center and the highest Ir–O hybridization of Lu2Ir2O7 exhibited the best OER performance among the Ir-based pyrochlore, up to a ninefold improvement in Ir-mass activity compared to IrO2. Our findings emphasize the electrochemical behavior of the reconstruction process for activated water-splitting performance.

Taking advantage of a continuous-flow apparatus, the iridium(III)-containing polytungstate cluster K12Na2H2[Ir2Cl8P2W20O72]·37H2O (1) was obtained in a reasonable yield (13% based on IrCl3·H2O). Compound 1 was characterized by Fourier transform IR, UV–visible, 31P NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and thermogravimetric analysis measurements. 31P NMR, ESI-MS, and elemental analysis all indicated 1 was a new polytungstate cluster compared with the reported K14[(IrCl4)KP2W20O72] compound. Intriguingly, the successful isolation of 1 relied on the custom-built flow apparatus, demonstrating the uniqueness of continuous-flow chemistry to achieve crystalline materials. The catalytic properties of 1 were assessed by investigating the activity on catalyzing the electro-oxidation of ruthenium tris-2,2′-bipyridine [Ru(bpy)3]2+/3+. The voltammetric behavior suggested a coupled catalytic behavior between [Ru(bpy)3]3+/2+ and 1. Furthermore, on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface, 1,3,5-tris(10-carboxydecyloxy) benzene (TCDB) was used as the two-dimensional host network to coassemble cluster 1; the surface morphology was observed by scanning tunneling microscope technique. “S”-shape of 1 was observed, indicating that the cluster could be accommodated in the cavity formed by two TCDB host molecules, leading to a TCDB/cluster binary structure.

The one-pot tandem hydroformylation-reduction to synthesize alcohols from olefins is in great demand but suffering from low yields, poor selectivity and harsh condition. Herein, 1,10-phenanthroline ( L1 ) modified Ir-catalyst proved to exhibit multiple catalysis in terms of FA dehydrogenation, hydroformylation of olefins, and transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes to accomplish the tandem hydroformylation-transfer hydrogenation of olefins with formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source, as the result of 52–70% yields for the target alcohols and the corresponding formate esters (obtained upon esterification of the alcohol with FA). In this sequence, only the use of FA with trans - and cis -conformers could fulfill the reduction of aldehydes to the alcohols through transfer hydrogenation as well as greatly depress hydrogenation of the olefin, which universally occurred in the high pressured gaseous H 2 . Both the in situ FT-IR spectroscopic analysis and the DFT-calculations verified that, over L1 -[Ir(COD)Cl] 2 catalyst, cis -FA serving as the hydride-ligand was responsible for the efficient dehydrogenation of FA to release H 2 along with CO 2 , and trans- FA serving as the carbonyl O-containing ligand corresponded to the transfer hydrogenation of the aldehydes to the alcohols under the same catalytic conditions.

In recent years, breast cancer attracts more and more attention because of its high mobility and high mortality for women. Phototherapy, including photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), provides a new pathway to breast cancer therapy. Herein, we developed multifunctional
IR780 loaded nanoparticles based on folic acid modified chitosan (FASOC-IR780 NPs) for targeted imaging and phototherapy of cancer compatible with a single-nearinfrared (NIR) laser irradiation. In vitro characterizations demonstrated the self-assembled FASOC-IR780 NPs own narrow size
distribution and encouraging photothermal performance with enhanced generation of ROS under laser irradiation. The cytotoxicity studies on MDA-MB-231 cells showed enhanced toxicity upon NIR light irradiation. NIR small animal imaging demonstrated the significant tumor-selectivity of the nanoparticles
to breast cancer cells that over expressed folate receptor. In vivo treatments with FASOC-IR780 NPs resulted in effective tumor suppression. These results indicate that the multifunctional FASOC-IR780 NPs show notable targeting and theranostic potential in breast cancer therapy.
