A polyethylene oxide based electrolyte enabled by the synergistic effect of active LiGaO2 filler and ionic liquid for superior lithium metal batteries

Xiongwei Luo,Xijun Xu,Fangkun Li,Shaomin Ji,Weizhen Fan,Jingwei Zhao,Jun Liu,Yanping Huo

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) electrolytes have been extensively researched in solid-state batteries due to their excellent interface compatibility, high flexibility, and ease of machining. However, its practical application is still hindered by low ionic conductivity (∼10 −6  S cm −1 at room temperature) and a narrow electrochemical stability window. To settle these shortcomings, a PEO-based composite electrolyte enabled by active LiGaO 2 filler and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (AMIm-TFSI) ionic liquid is constructed for lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of LiGaO 2 filler and AMIm-TFSI ionic liquid, this composite electrolyte not only enhances the ionic conductivity (2.08 × 10 −3  S cm −1 ) and electrochemical window (5.2 V vs. Li + /Li) but also reduce the interfacial impedance. Furthermore, the Li//Li symmetric cells achieved an ultralong lithium deposition/stripping cycle over 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . The assembled solid-state LiFePO 4 //Li cell exhibit superior rate capability (164.2, 158.5, 154.8, 148.6, 119.4 mAh g −1 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 C, respectively) and excellent cycling stability (147.3 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.2C). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis reveals that the composite electrolytes in situ form an inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interface layer. This work provides guidance on designing superior organic-inorganic composite electrolytes for LMBs.

Lanthanum-doped LiFePO4 cathode materials for lithium ion battery by citric acid-assisted carbothermal reduction method using acid-washed iron red as raw material

Cong Jun,Luo Shao-hua,Li Peng-yu,Li Kun,Wang Ya-feng,Yan Sheng-xue,Li Peng-wei,Chen Huan-huan

To realize the high value–added utilization of acid-washed iron red, in this paper, acid-washed iron red is used as raw material. Aiming at the problem of low conductivity of iron-based lithium ion batteries (LIBs) LiFePO 4 /C materials, different metal ions are doped in the iron position, and the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the obtained material are systematically studied. Here, LiFePO 4 /C is synthesized through simple carbothermal reduction method using acid-washed iron red as the iron source. On this basis, La (1%, 2%, 3%) doping modification is carried out. Then doped modification is performed on this basis, preferably 2% La-doped LiFePO 4 /C materials. The XRD patterns show that the diffraction peaks of the samples prepared at all doping amounts can be perfectly matched with the standard card ( PDF # 40–1499), and there is no impurity peak, all of which are pure phases. According to the refined data, it is clear that minor amount of La has successfully replaced the position of Fe and incorporated into the lattice. Electrochemical tests show that LiFe 0.98 La 0.02 PO 4 /C has the highest charge and discharge capacity of 146.5/138.2 mAh·g −1 in the first cycle at 0.5C, and the reversible specific capacity of 136.5 mAh·g −1 remains after 50 cycles. Furthermore, the first-principles calculations more strongly confirm that La doping can significantly improve the defects of low electronic conductivity of LiFePO 4 .

A simple green method for in-situ selective extraction of Li from spent LiFePO4 batteries by synergistic effect of deep-eutectic solvent and ozone

Shujie Tang,Ziyue Yang,Mei Zhang,Min Guo

Efficient and clean extraction lithium (Li) from spent LiFePO 4 batteries (LIBs) still remains a challenge. In this paper, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on ethylene glycol (EG) and choline chloride (CC), combined with ozone (O 3 ) from air source, realized highly selective leaching Li from LiFePO 4 in situ for the first time. The influence of experimental parameters on Li and Fe leaching efficiencies ( η Li , η Fe ) were studied by orthogonal and single-factor tests, and η Li  ≥ 92.2% while η Fe  ≤ 1.6% were obtained under the optimal conditions (6 h, 20 g/L, 8EG:1CC, 40 °C). The impurity Fe in the filtrate was completely precipitated as amorphous FePO 4 ·3H 2 O after heating (150 °C, 0.5 h), achieving a pure Li-solution. The leaching mechanism elucidated that the synergistic effect (acidification, replacement and oxidation reaction) between the DES and O 3 determined the phase transition of Li and Fe, promoting the efficient selective extraction of Li and in-situ separation of Fe (FePO 4 ). The average η Li and η Fe were separately 85.4% and 2.0% after ten cycles of the 8EG:1CC, indicative of its’ excellent reusability. Meanwhile, LiCl was recovered from the filtrate. This process avoided the use of strong acid/alkali and discharge of waste water, providing fresh perspectives on the green recovery of spent LiFePO 4 batteries.

A sustainable strategy for spent Li-ion battery regeneration: microwave-hydrothermal relithiation complemented with anode-revived graphene to construct a LiFePO4/MWrGO cathode material

Zhenyu Jiang,Jing Sun,Pingshan Jia,Wenlong Wang,Zhanlong Song,Xiqiang Zhao,Yanpeng Mao

With the upcoming retirement of widely employed LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries, a sustainable strategy for recycling their valuable components is urgent. In this work, spent LFP cathodes were revived through a microwave-hydrothermal relithiation process, complemented with microwave-reduced graphene oxide (MWrGO) derived from spent graphite anodes, to form a composite LFP/MWrGO cathode material. The defect–repair process, performed under optimal conditions (150 °C for 1 h), allows LFP cathodes to gain better morphology and electrochemical performance with a specific capacity of 150.5 mA h g−1 at 0.1C. The introduction of anode-revived graphene via electrostatic self-assembly helps form a hierarchical structure and conductive network for regenerated LFP, enabling fast ion and electron transfer for redox reactions. When doped with 5 wt% graphene, the regenerated LFP/MWrGO composite displays an enhanced specific capacity of 161.4 mA h g−1 and high capacity retention (i.e., 94.9% over 100 cycles) at 0.2C. Laboratory-scale economic and environmental analyses indicate that the entire regeneration process has a favorable atom economy of recovery with low energy/time/reagent consumption and greenhouse gas emission, owing to the featured microwave-material interaction. This study provides a green facile method as a reference for the regeneration of spent LFP batteries, which can be extended to other types of batteries, and promotes the sustainability of Li-ion battery downstream technology.

Preparation and performance study of a BaTiO3-LiFePO4 piezoelectric composite-based lithium-ion sieve for lithium extraction from salt lake brines under natural conditions

Xiaoyu Song,Meitang Liu,Haisheng Hu,Qian Liu,Lu Xiong,Xinyu Li

Lithium is widely used in digital products and new energy vehicles due to its low density and low redox potential, and there are huge prospects for extracting lithium from the brines of salt lakes. In addition, it is well known that the majority of the lithium salt lake brines on Earth have been identified in high-altitude areas with harsh geographical environments. Nevertheless, there are also rich natural energy sources, such as wind and tidal energy. Therefore, it is vital to develop a novel variety of lithium-ion sieves that can utilize natural energy. It is highly exclusive and selective for lithium-ions in salt lakes to achieve low-cost and large-scale lithium extraction under natural conditions. In this paper, BaTiO 3 -LiFePO 4 (BTO-LFP) piezoelectric composite-based lithium-ion sieve materials were successfully prepared and utilized to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, which should be used in lithium extraction from raw brines with natural energy. According to the experiments, the materials can reach adsorbing equilibrium in simulated brine after 48 h. The lithium adsorption amount is 21.5 mg/g and can also reach adsorbing equilibrium in Yi-Liping raw salt lake brines after 72 h, and the adsorption amount can also reach 21.7 mg/g which indicates that this lithium-ion sieve is specific and selective for lithium-ion. What's more surprising is that this lithium-ion sieve only uses natural kinetic energy as the driving force for lithium extraction. Therefore, this study has devised an innovative technique for extracting lithium from natural brines, which shows significant promise, for the large-scale exploration of lithium resources from salt lakes under harsh natural conditions.

E-pH diagram-guided low-temperature short-time sulfuric acid leaching for efficient recovery of lithium and iron from high-aluminum LiFePO4 black powder

Ke Xu,Shengde Dong,Chunxi Hai,Luxiang Ma,Yanxia Sun,Qi Xu,Xin He,Yuan Zhou

The recycling of cathode materials in waste lithium-ion batteries is of great significance to resource utilization and environmental protection. However, few studies have addressed the challenges posed by high-aluminum LiFePO 4 black powder (HALFP-BP) resulting from inadequate pre-treatment. This study proposes a low-temperature short-time sulfuric acid leaching method based on thermodynamic analysis of E-pH diagrams. Under optimized conditions, the leaching efficiencies of Li and Fe reached 99 %, while 86 % of Al was selectively removed. Furthermore, the guiding role of E-pH diagram in the recovery process and the chemical reactions and Gibbs free energy analysis during the acid leaching process were analyzed. It revealed that the dissolution kinetics inhibition of the dense Al 2 O 3 film on the surface of aluminum impurities in the sulfuric acid system was the key to achieving selective separation. This method provides an energy-saving and efficient solution for the resource utilization of the HALFP-BP.

High-Performance Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Based Composite Polymer Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries Based on Halloysite Nanotubes with Polyethylene Oxide Additives

Xiaofei Wang,Shuonan Wang,Zhangkuo Han,Hao Liu,Libing Liao

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are considered to be an important move to revive high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries due to their good flexibility and high safety. However, the low room-temperature ionic conductivity of SPEs has always been a stumbling block for their practical applications. Herein, a composite SPE has been fabricated by the cooperation of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and a type of natural nanoclay-halloysite nanotube (HNT) in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. It is expected that the sticky PEO can improve the interfacial stability of the SPE and lithium foil, while the special structure and surface charge properties of the HNTs changed the coordination environment of lithium ions and facilitated Li+ running on highways along the HNT outer surface. The optimized SPE composite showed an outstanding room-temperature ionic conductivity of 2.45 × 10–4 S cm–1 and high ion transference number of 0.67 at 25 °C. A LiFePO4/SPE-H5/Li full battery retained a discharge capacity of 142 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at a rate of 0.2 C (25 °C). In addition, SPE-H5 can also be used in a 4.3 V high voltage NCM/SPE-H5/Li battery due to its excellent electrochemical stability window (more than 5 V). This work also reveals that lower-cost natural clay minerals are excellent nanoceramic fillers in realizing sustainable high-energy-density energy storage.

A sustainable revival process for defective LiFePO4 cathodes through the synergy of defect-targeted healing and in-situ construction of 3D-interconnected porous carbon networks

Jing Sun,Zhenyu Jiang,Pingshan Jia,Su Li,Wenlong Wang,Zhanlong Song,Yanpeng Mao,Xiqiang Zhao,Bingqian Zhou

The reutilization of spent cathode materials plays a key role in the sustainable development of Li-ion battery technology. However, current recycling approaches generally based on hydro-/pyrometallurgy fail to cater to Co-free cathodes ( e.g. , LiFePO 4 , or LFP) owing to high consumption and secondary contamination. Here, a sustainable process is proposed for the revival of defective LFP cathodes through the synergy of defect-targeted healing and surface modification. Li deficiency and Fe oxidation of cathodes are precisely repaired by solution-based relithiation; meanwhile, 3D-interconnected porous carbon networks (3dC) are in-situ constructed with the intervention of salt template during annealing, which enhances the rate performance and electronic/ionic conductivity, by providing more convenient migration channels for Li ions and controlling carbon hybridization. Nitrogen is also doped via induction of urea to fabricate advanced nanohybrid rLFP@3dC-N. New cells using rLFP@3dC-N as cathode exhibit a reversible capacity of up to 169.74 and 141.79 mAh g −1 at 0.1 and 1C, respectively, with an excellent retention rate of over 95.7% at 1C after 200 cycles. Impressively, a high capacity of 107.18 mAh g −1 is retained at 5C. This novel concepts for Li replenishment and the construction of ion-transfer channels as well as conductive networks facilitate the regeneration of spent LFP and the optimization of its high-rate performance.

An In Situ Polymerized Comb-Like PLA/PEG-based Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium Metal Batteries

Muhammad Zaheer,Hongli Xu,Bingbing Wang,Lianwei Li,Yonghong Deng

High ionic conductivity is a prerequisite for the application of solid-state polymer electrolyte towards the safe and high energy density electrochemical devices. Here we report the preparation and properties of an in-situ polymerized comb-like copolymer-based SPE (PLA/PEG-SPE) with high ionic conductivity from methyl acrylate functionalized poly(D,L-Lactide) (PLAMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA). A remarkably high ionic conductivity value of 6.9 × 10−5 S cm−1 at ambient temperature and a maximum ionic conductivity of 4.3 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 60°C were detected, with an activation energy of 0.2 eV and a Li+ transference number (tLi+) of 0.36. The PLA/PEG-SPE exhibits a wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.6 vs. Li/Li+ and very good lithium metal electrode compatibility. Solid-state LiFePO4/SPE/Li cells with integrated cathode and lithium metal deliver superior cycling stability with high discharge capacities (149 mAh g−1 as the initial specific capacity) and high capacity retention (exceeded 82% of its initial specific capacity) at 0.2 C at 60°C. The solid-state cells are also capable of being cycled at room temperature at 0.2 C. This work highlights a facile, in-situ fabrication strategy involving a vinyl-functionalized PLA precursor that yields a high-performance ion-conducting membrane attractive for lithium metal battery applications.

Stable Lithium Metal Anode Enabled by a Lithiophilic and Electron/Ion Conductive Framework

Tao Zhang,Huichao Lu,Jun Yang,Zhixin Xu,Jiulin Wang,Shin-ichi Hirano,Yongsheng Guo,Chengdu Liang

Li metal anode has been considered as the ideal anode for next-generation batteries due to its ultrahigh capacity and lowest electrochemical potential. However, its practical application is still impeded by low Coulombic efficiency, huge volume change, and safety hazards arising from Li dendrite growth. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) structured highly stable Li metal anode is designed and easily preapred. Benefiting from the in situ reaction between Li metal and AlN, highly Li+ conductive Li3N and lithiophilic LiAl alloy have been simultaneously formed and homogeneously distributed in the framework, in which Li metal is finely dispersed and embedded. The outstanding electron/ion mixed conductivity of Li3N/LiAl and 3D composite structure with enhanced interfacial area significantly improve the electrode kinetics and suppress the volume change on cycling, while a lithiophilic effect of LiAl alloy and uniform distribution of Li ion flux inside the electrode avoid dendritic Li deposition. As a result, the proposed Li metal electrode exhibits exceptional electrochemical reversibility in both carbonate and ether-based electrolytes. Paired with LiFePO4 and sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S@pPAN) cathodes, the full cells deliver highly stable and long-term cycling performance. Therefore, the proposed strategy to fabricate Li metal anodes could promote the practical application of Li metal batteries.

Three-dimensional printed Li4Ti5O12@VSe2 composites as high-performance anode material in full 3D-printed lithium-ion batteries with three-dimensional -printed LiFePO4@AC/rGO cathode

J.P. Mwizerwa,K. Xu,C. Liu,N. Zhao,Y. Li,P. Ndagijimana,Z. Chen,J. Shen

Currently, the development of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with improved areal capacity is still challenging. The common strategy to improve areal capacity is to increase the thickness of electrode materials. However, the application of thick electrodes remains challenge due to poor mechanical properties , slow charge and ion transport, and poor electrolyte infiltration . In this study, thick electrodes are constructed by 3D printing a Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 @VSe 2 -based ink. The highly electrical conductor VSe 2 on the Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 surface improves the ion and charge transport and eases the internal resistance of the 3D-printed electrode during charge and discharge. As a result, LIBs employing these thick electrodes show a high-rate capability of 128.9 mAh/g at 10 C, improved areal capacities up to 6.2 mAh/cm 2 , and ultrastable cycling capability (84.5% of capacity retention after 1700 cycles). Moreover, full cells utilizing 3D-Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 @VSe 2 as the anode and 3D-LiFePO 4 @AC/rGO as the cathode with 1.81 V potential yield a high specific capacity of 152.5 mAh/g at 0.1C, a high specific energy density of 276.025 Wh/kg, and a power density of 30.5 W/kg at 0.1C. This work paves the way to designing thick electrodes for high-performance LIBs.

Long-term cycling quasi-solid-state lithium batteries enabled by 3D nanofibrous TiO2−x@Li anodes and in-situ polymerized gel-electrolytes

Kejin Jiao,Shujie Liu,Yanyan Ma,Shuo Chen,Liying Wei,Jianhua Yan

Lithium (Li) metal battery is a promising next generation energy storage system due to its high energy density , but what hinders its commercialization is the safety hazard of Li-anode, especially under high current densities. Here, we report a dual strategy of using electronic conductive black TiO 2−x nanofiber films to construct composite Li-metal anodes with stable 3D networks and applying an in-situ polymerized ionic conductive gel-electrolyte to construct efficient quasi-solid-state Li-batteries (QSSLBs). The 3D nanofibrous Li-anode shows a stable and small nucleation barrier and can run stably (>1600 h) at a high current density of 10 mA/cm 2 . When matching with high-loading cathodes of LiFePO 4 , the QSSLBs exhibit excellent long-term cycling stability (>500 cycles) and high-rate capability (>1 C). In addition, the in-situ polymerization strategy can be incorporated with the commercial lamination manufacturing to produce 63-Ah pouch cells of LiFePO 4 ||graphite, which deliver a high initial Coloumbic efficiency, a large energy density at 0.3 C, excellent rate capability from 0.25 to 2 C, and long-term cycling performance at 0.3 and 1 C, showing potential commercial prospects.
