Integration of other functional materials onto the surface or into the matrixes of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an attractive and effective approach to fabricate multifunctional MOFs. Herein, we report a facile and novel strategy for in situ synthesis of magnetic hybrid Fe 3 O 4 /MIL-101 via heterogeneous coprecipitation assembly. Characterizations showed that the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were uniformly coated on the outer-surface of MIL-101. The as-synthesized Fe 3 O 4 /MIL-101 composite holds larger BET surfaces area, pore volume and higher positive charge than MIL-101. These preferable properties make it to be an excellent candidate for adsorption and removal of anionic dye from aqueous solution. The present work provides a new insight for in situ synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 -functionalized MOFs, offering an alternative way to prepare magnetic hybrid materials for a wide range of applications.

The development of high carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sorption capacity materials is necessary for the deployment of the CO 2 capture and storage strategy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising substitutes for traditional liquid and solid CO 2 capture sorbents due to their high surface area, tunable pore size, diverse composition, and various physical and chemical properties. However, MOFs feature the intrinsic limitations of powder agglomeration, weak binding affinity, and sluggish diffusion kinetics, thus hindering their industrial application in CO 2 capture. Herein, we design an amine-functionalized MIL-101@cellulose (NH 2 -MIL-101@BM) composite sorbent by anchoring NH 2 -MIL-101 nanoparticles onto the BM matrix through hydrogen bonding interaction. The dual synergistic effect, origin from the physical sorption synergistic effect and chemisorption synergistic effect proposed between NH 2 -MIL-101 and BM, not only facilitates the mass transfer of CO 2 by reducing the diffusion resistance through hierarchical-pore structure but also offers stronger sorption sites with CO 2 by increasing the adsorption energy of metal-CO 2 or amine-CO 2 , which are confirmed by series of characterizations and theory functional calculations. Benefiting from the above merits, the NH 2 -MIL-101@20 %BM sorbent delivers a superior initial CO 2 sorption capacity of 13.4 mmol/g when the BM doping amount is 20 wt% at 25 °C, and also shows good recycle stability even after 15 runs with maintainable structure. This work displays the in-depth mechanism understanding for enhanced CO 2 capture, providing value inspiration for future MOF-based composite sorbent construction for CO 2 capture at ambient temperatures.

The immobilization of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with high efficiency, good reproducibility and stability for chiral separation has attracted much attention in the medicinal field. BSA was immobilized into MIL-101(Cr) by three ways for efficient chiral separation in this research. MIL-101(Cr)@BSA was firstly prepared by adsorption, NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ BSA by direct bonding, and NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ Glu ⊂ BSA by glutaraldehyde crosslinking bonding. Compared to the other two materials, NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ BSA as a new enantioselective separator, with the most BSA loading rate of 437.6 mg g −1 exhibited excellent chiral separation performances and succeeded in realizing a complete chiral separation of racemic 1–phenylethanol within 14 s. It was found that the NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ BSA was more strongly bound to R -1-phenylethanol and the ee value could reach 100 % when the material was added in three batches. The different interactions between BSA and racemates mainly including hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction and π-π interaction were revealed by the molecular docking studies, especially hydrogen bonding, accounting for the observed selective chiral recognition capacity of racemic 1–phenylethanol of NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ BSA. Moreover, both of NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ BSA and NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) ⊂ Glu ⊂ BSA showed excellent stability and reusability. This combination of theory and experiment provided a clearer basis for other researchers to have different requirements for protein immobilization, and provided new ideas and methods for the development of chiral selectors.

The interfacial characteristics of platinum (Pt) metal catalysts can be systematically regulated by interacting them with electropositive metals, leading to synergistic interactions for extensive catalytic applications. In this study, an evenly dispersed polyol-synthesized iron (Fe)-promoted Pt bimetallic nanoparticle (BNPs) system was embedded in MIL-101(Cr). The PtFe 2 @MIL-101(Cr) catalyst unveiled remarkable activity (86%) and selectivity (89%) for the superior hydrogenation of the targeted C O bond of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). The exceptional hydrogenation performance can be credited to the interplay of the geometric and electronic properties arising from charge shuttling between Fe and Pt within the homogenously distributed Pt–Fe bimetallic nanoparticle system. The experimental results indicate enhanced valence electrons in the Pt d-band through the mutual synergetic interface between the Pt and Fe BNPs. Consequently, these Fe–Pt sites functioned as interfacial electrophilic and nucleophilic (Lewis acid-base) sites, enhancing H 2 activation and facilitating C O bond conversion to yield unsaturated cinnamal alcohols (COL). Additionally, the narrow pores of MIL-101(Cr) encapsulating the Pt–Fe BNPs induced steric hindrance, allowing only C O bond hydrogenation. Furthermore, the PtFe 2 @MIL-101(Cr) catalyst maintained its optimal hydrogenation performance over five cycles, demonstrating no substantial loss in either CAL conversion or COL yield, thus endorsing the universal practical applicability of the catalyst.

A novel composite material, Poly(IL-AA)@MIL-101(Cr), combining metal-organic framework, polymeric ionic liquid and acrylic acid, was synthesized for the selective and efficient adsorption of rare earths europium(III) (Eu 3+ ). Characterization of the materials was carried out using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The results demonstrate successful incorporation of the polymeric ionic liquid onto the material surface while preserving the crystal structure and morphology of MIL-101(Cr). Adsorption experiments were conducted to explore parameters including solution pH, initial Eu 3+ concentration, and duration, with comprehensive analyses of adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and mechanisms. Findings reveal that Poly(IL1-AA)@MIL-101(Cr), Poly(IL3-AA)@MIL-101(Cr), and Poly(IL5-AA)@MIL-101(Cr) achieve adsorption equilibrium for Eu 3+ at approximately 9 h with an equilibrium pH of 6.2. The adsorption of Eu 3+ predominantly follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Moreover, the prepared composite material exhibits superior adsorption selectivity for Eu 3+ over other metal ions in the mixture (K + , Mg 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , La 3+ , and Nd 3+ ). Even after five adsorption-desorption cycles, the composite material maintains satisfactory adsorption performance.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can catalyte into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) which had received much attention as a potential biomass resource. Here, we used a simple and effective method to construct hollow CdS quantum dot (CdS QDs)/MIL-101 heterostructures with high contact area and multiple active sites. The structure of heterostructures could improve photocatalytic activity by charge transfer, photogenerated carrier separation and the multiple refractions of light supported within the hollow-structured CdS QDs. The detailed catalytic mechanism was illustrated by trap agent experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, in which superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) play a decisive role in the catalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF. Furthermore, the large specific surface area of MIL-101 adsorbs O 2 from the reaction system thereby accelerating the ·O 2 - formation process. Under environmental conditions, 70 % CdS QDs/MIL-101 exhibited optimal catalytic performance. Comparing with pure CdS QDs, the photocurrent enhances 1.8 times, HMF conversion is 1.5 times and DFF selectivity is 1.2 times. This work provide a useful way to improve the conversion of biomass by Z-heterostructures under ambient conditions.

Malathion (MA) is a widely used organophosphorus pesticide globally. Developing efficient photocatalysts is crucial for eliminating MA pollution in water by photocatalytic technology. This study focuses on preparing a series of H-PDI supermolecule/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) (PM) materials by amidating NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) with the more stable H-PDI supermolecule, forming a covalent O C–NH bond. Among these materials, 40 %PM (indicating a mass percentage content of 40 % H-PDI supermolecule in PM) exhibited the best performance for degradation of MA. Under simulated sunlight irradiation of a 10 mg·L 1 MA solution for 180 min, the reaction rate constants of 40 %PM were 5.95 times and 3.13 times higher than those of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) and H-PDI supermolecule, respectively. The enhanced performance is attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions in the 40 %PM composite lead to fast separation of photogenerated e − and h + . Combining the results of HPLC-MS with Fukui Function, the HOMO, LUMO, and pathway of degradation of MA attracted by 1 O 2 , •OH, and h + were speculated. The pathway involves oxidation, demethylation, P-S bond breakage, decarboxylation, and final conversion to some inorganic molecules. The toxicity of the degradation byproducts were lower than that of MA estimated by Toxicity Estimation Software Tool.

Effective identification of excavated leather artifacts assumes a crucial role in the subsequent restoration and protection of the artifacts, and on a deeper level, it holds significant implications for the history and culture represented by the artifacts. Existing approaches fail to address the pain points of micro-trace detection and species identification. In this work, two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides/carbon nanotubes (MXene/CNTs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were employed as electrochemical immunosensor materials to construct and utilize a sandwich-type immunosensor for the first time to detect leather artifacts. The sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range of 10 −1 –10 3 ng/mL and an extremely low detection limit of 83 pg/mL, which can fulfill the requirements of ultra-sensitive detection. In addition, the sandwich electrochemical immunosensor demonstrates excellent specificity and stability, with the redox peak current value retaining over 95 % of the original value after 10 repeats of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and more than 85 % of the original peak current after one week of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), with an RSD of 0.767 %. The immunosensor achieves satisfactory outcomes in both qualitative and quantitative detection when analyzing leather artifacts and micro-traces, and its performance surpasses that of existing methods. Therefore, this work not only introduces novel materials for the construction of sandwich immunosensors but also provides new concepts and approaches for archaeological detection of cultural relics.

Herein, we report a novel electrochemical sensor for determining glucose in sweat, employing a graphene/metal–organic framework (MOF) as a modifier for stainless steel (SS) electrode. The MOF structures, MIL-101(Cr), MIL-101(Cr)-NO 2 , and MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 , were hydrothermally synthesized and then characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD and SEM results proved the formation of the crystalline MIL-101(Cr) and MIL-101(Cr)-NO 2 , and the amorphous MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 . Additionally, FT-IR and isotherms confirmed their composition and mesoporosity, respectively. The amorphous MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 showed the best electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation among the fabricated MOFs. The electrocatalytic activity was also boosted after incorporating conductive graphene. Under optimized conditions, graphene/MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 /SS was used for glucose determination using square wave voltammetry and chronoamperometry with detection limits of 0.004 and 0.01 mM, respectively. Moreover, the modified electrode showed acceptable recovery values when it was applied to detect glucose in artificial sweat samples.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has been proven as a useful and advanced technique in the identification of polymers and proteins. However, MALDI-TOF-MS still has the unavoidable drawback of self-signal interference with traditional organic matrices, which could suppress and overlap with the analyte signals in the low-mass region. In this work, MIL-101(Cr), a kind of metal-organic frameworks which possess high molecular weight , π-conjugated 3-D structure, coordinately unsaturated chromium sites (CUS) and strong absorption in the UV range, was employed to replace traditional organic matrices, and it was found that MIL-101(Cr) can dramatically eliminate the background peaks, showing high signal-to-noise level in the analysis of small molecules. As proof-of-concept, quercetin , daidzein , genistein and naringenin , members of flavonol family which widely exists in food and natural products , were successfully determined by utilizing MIL-101(Cr) as the surface-assisted matrix, and the detection of quercetin was sensitive with good salt tolerance and reproducibility. Under optimal conditions, the mass peak intensity exhibited good linear relationships in the range from 0.25 µg/mL-7.00 µg/mL for quercetin ( R 2 =0.996) with detection limit 2.11 ng/mL (3σ/k), making the identification of quercetin in sophora japonica successfully. With this strategy we have demonstrated the potentiality of MIL-101(Cr) nanomaterials as MALDI-MS matrix for the detection of small molecules.

Achieving efficient ligand-metal charge transfer remains a significant challenge for constructing high-performance N 2 -fixing MOF photocatalysts. Herein, we successfully fabricated mixed-metal MIL-101(Fe/Cr) materials to achieve ligand-metal charge transfer, leading to significantly improved N 2 fixation performance. Performance test under visible light demonstrated that MIL-101(Fe/Cr) achieved nitrogen fixation activity of 125.19 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is 1.7 times greater than that of pure MIL-101(Fe). The experimental confirm that the incorporation of Cr metal enables the more favorable accumulation of photogenerated electrons at the Fe catalytic centers, attributed to increased electronic interactions and enhanced charge transfer efficiency, thus facilitating the activation process of N 2 , and consequently enhancing ammonia (NH 3 ) production. This work provides new insights into strategies for improving the ligand-metal charge transfer efficiency of MOF-based photocatalytic nitrogen fixation materials.

A deep purification treatment of trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the tail gas emitted from the top of oil storage tanks was performed. Metal organic framework MIL-101(Cr) (hereinafter referred to as MIL-101) was used to remove trace C4–C6 alkane mixture in the tail gas. Compared with the commercial activated carbon, adsorption and desorption processes of trace C4–C6 alkane mixture as well as the adsorption thermodynamic property of n-hexane on MIL-101 were analyzed. Results demonstrate that the adsorption isosteric heat of n-hexane on MIL-101 is 48–52 kJ/mol, 9 kJ/mol lower than that on activated carbon. Trace C4–C6 alkanes on MIL-101 were desorbed by a nitrogen purge at 393 K, and the desorption efficiency of MIL-101 was up to 98.9%, which is 35% higher than that of activated carbon (∼64.3%). After 10 adsorption/desorption cycles, the desorption efficiency of MIL-101 exceeds 97%, indicating good cycle stability. The desorption process is affected by the spatial fit between the molecular configurations of alkanes and the three-dimensional tetrahedral cage of MIL-101 or by the one-dimensional slit pore of activated carbon. For alkanes with the same carbon, n-alkanes are preferentially desorbed on MIL-101, whereas isoalkanes are preferentially desorbed on activated carbon. Rich mesopores connected with the tetrahedral cages of MIL-101 are beneficial for desorption of trace C4–C6 alkanes. It provides basic data for the deep treatment of VOCs in the tail gas of oil storage tanks.
