As technology continues to advance, multifunctional flexible electronic devices for monitoring human health and managing thermal conditions have garnered considerable attention. Nevertheless, achieving a balance between a wide strain sensing range and high sensitivity remains a considerable challenge. Herein, PDA/PEBA/MWCNTs/rGO (PPMr) sensors were fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration of ultrasonically mixed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) loaded on polydopamine-modified PEBA nanofiber membranes. This sensor has a broad range of strain detection capabilities (0–127 % strain), high sensitivity (GF = 42), response/recovery times of 600/500 ms, and over 8000 cycles of stability. At the same time, this sensor also exhibits outstanding photothermal conversion capability (reaching 75.6 °C at 100 mW/cm 2 ), electrothermal conversion capability (up to 82.2 °C at 8 V), and excellent photothermal/electrothermal synergistic conversion capability (reaching 78.9 °C at 100 mW/cm 2 and 4 V). This strain sensor is noteworthy for its outstanding performance, as it can detect body movements across a wide range of strain, such as elbow joint movements, as well as subtle physiological signals like pulse waves. This capability highlights its significant potential for applications in human health monitoring and thermal management.

Monitoring salivary glucose has gained increased attention as a non-invasive approach to prevent and diagnose diabetes. Since the glucose concentration in saliva is lower than that in blood, the development of effective electrocatalysts for highly sensitive glucose detection is thus of great significance. In this study, a hollow nanocage from NiCo-layered double hydroxides (LDH) modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is designed and further employed as the sensing material to construct a novel non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensor with high sensitivity. It is synthesized by utilizing pre-synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67)/MWCNTs as a sacrificial template and subsequently conducting a simple solvent-thermal reaction with Ni(NO 3 ) 2 . Such a hollow nanocage preserves the polyhedral framework structure of the used precursor, where the hollow frame-like structure of NiCo-LDH offers accessible catalytic sites, and MWCNTs provides good conductivity. Their combination brings in a bridging effect between MWCNTs and NiCo-LDH, further leading to a large electrochemical active area and excellent catalytic activity of this hollow nanocage. The constructed sensor exhibits a detection limit as low as 0.03 μM for the glucose detection as well as wide linear ranges of 0.1–3000 μM and 3000–9231.8 μM, corresponding to the sensitivity of 2.55 and 1.15 μA mM −1 cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, this sensor enables the tracking of glucose concentration change in salivary before and after food intake. This work offers new highly sensitive sensing materials and potentially valuable approaches for non-invasive glucose detection.

Superhydrophobic coatings hold considerable promise for safeguarding metals against corrosion. However, realizing coatings with excellent superhydrophobicity, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance remains a great challenge. In this study, a robust superhydrophobic surface was achieved through the laser processing of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, resulting in a water contact angle (WCA) of approximately 165°. Notably, the coating demonstrated outstanding abrasion resistance in sandpaper abrasion, steel wool abrasion, and falling sand tests. The friction coefficient of the coating is only 0.25. In addition, the robust superhydrophobic coating also has good anti-corrosion. The lowest-frequency impedance value of the composite coatings increases seven orders of magnitude compared with that of carbon steel, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency ( η ) is 99.83 %. The outstanding corrosion resistance is primarily ascribed to the formation of a dual synergistic barrier by PDMS-MWCNTs, providing effective protection for carbon steel.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric nanofibers gain significant attention for flexible electronic devices, yet their low piezoelectric conversion efficiency remains a critical barrier to broader application. In this study, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are combined with fullerene (C60) to form a distinctive “grape-like” nanostructure (MC), which is then embedded into the PVDF matrix via electrospinning to produce PVDF/MC composite nanofibers. The incorporation of MC increases the β-phase content of the PVDF nanofibers by 11.07%, enhancing their piezoelectric properties, and also acts as localized conductive domains and stress concentration centers, synergistically boosting the output performance of the piezoelectric devices. Consequently, piezoelectric devices based on PVDF/MC-3 wt % composite nanofibers exhibit voltage and current outputs 559.1% and 1382.8% higher than those of pure PVDF, respectively. This innovative strategy of leveraging “grape-like” nanostructures to enhance PVDF’s piezoelectric performance represents a promising pathway toward achieving efficient energy conversion in piezoelectric materials.

Creating novel, high-efficiency and multi-functional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with high absorption attenuation is crucially important for integrated electronic devices. Herein, heterogeneous polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/graphene (Gr)@multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/CoFe 2 O 4 multilayer films featuring electric-magnetic coupling were fabricated through a facile vacuum filtration method. The asymmetric layered architecture was composed of a flexible PAN electrospun nanofiber mat, an electrically conductive hybrid of Gr@MWCNTs, and a layer of insulating CoFe 2 O 4 particles. The nanosized magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 particles with unique magnetic hysteresis loss and natural resonance were synthesized by hydrothermal method and deposited on the conductive layer, to improve the impedance matching and reduce the electromagnetic wave (EMW) reflection. As a consequence, after incorporating the CoFe 2 O 4 layer, the EMW absorption loss (SE A ) was improved from 21.7 to 25.7 dB. Furthermore, the hybrid conductive network was regulated by altering the ratio of two-dimensional (2D) Gr to one-dimensional (1D) MWCNTs, to endow the well-designed multilayer films with a high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 40.1 dB and a superior specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) of 326.3 dB/mm. By virtue of the fine-tuned Gr@MWCNTs conductive network, the PAN/Gr@MWCNTs/CoFe 2 O 4 multilayer films exhibited excellent Joule heating performance, with high sensitivity, low driving voltage, rapid response, superior cycling stability and long-term durability. The multilayer films could be controllably heated to 114.1 °C within 5 s under a low input voltage of 3.00 V. This work presents a viable strategy for exploiting functional materials that exhibit excellent EMI shielding and thermal management performance, suitable for applications in electronics operating at extremely low temperatures.

Rapid and accurate determination of rutin content in pharmaceuticals in an important issue. Here, a paper-based electrochemical sensor for in situ growth of chain ZIF-8 using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a template was constructed by hydrothermal method. The results showed that the combination of ZIF-8 and MWCNTs not only promoted the dispersion of MWCNTs, but also made up for the conductivity of ZIF-8. Under optimum conditions, the Ipa was linearly related to the concentration of rutin in the range of 0.01–10 and 10–190 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.82 nM. Finally, the paper-based electrochemical sensor can be used for the electrochemical detection of rutin through the determination of rutin in pharmaceuticals.

To control the eutrophication originating from phosphate discharge, a novel adsorptive membrane was prepared by vacuum filtrating lanthanum carbonate modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (LC@MWCNTs) on the UF membrane. The LC@MWCNTs were firstly made using an in-situ method by adding MWCNTs to LaCl 3 ·7H 2 O solution and forming lanthanum carbonate under alkaline conditions. The adsorption experiments exhibited that the maximum adsorption capacity of LC@MWCNTs was 77.58 mg P/g at pH 5. And the phosphate adsorption by LC@MWCNTs was not predominantly reliant on electrostatic interaction , but rather achieved through chemical interactions. Then, the prepared LC@MWCNTs membrane was systematically evaluated for its phosphate removal efficiency and anti-fouling performance during filtration. With the initial phosphate concentration of 1 mg P/L and membrane flux of 378 L·m −2 h −1 , the phosphate removal by LC@MWCNTs membrane approached almost 100 %. Moreover, the LC@MWCNTs membrane exhibited higher permeability (281.6 L·m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and effectiveness for humic acid (HA) removal (75 %), and LC@MWCNTs membrane mitigated the fouling caused by HA. XPS , FTIR and XRD elucidated that phosphate removal by LC@MWCNTs membrane primarily through the formation of La-O-P inner-sphere complexes via ligand exchange, resulting in the formation of adsorption product LaPO 4 ·0.5H 2 O. Under strong alkaline conditions, the LC@MWCNTs membrane rapidly restored its phosphate removal performance (30 min) with no significant detachment of the LC@MWCNTs layer, indicating its good recovery and reusability performance. Additionally, the LC@MWCNTs membrane could continuously remove phosphate from actual water, confirming its potential for future practical applications.

Due to the limitation of the intrinsic dielectric constant, the energy storage density of PVDF polymers cannot meet the needs of electronic materials. In this regard, this work focuses toward enhancing the dielectric and energy storage performance of PVDF by preparing PVDF nanocomposites impregnated with sepiolite modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB@Sep) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (C-MWCNTs). The results show that CTAB@Sep nanofibers can serve as efficient nucleation agents for γ-PVDF crystals. Furthermore, Sep nanofibers modified with CTAB can significantly promote the dispersion of C-MWCNTs through the electrostatic adsorption effect and then block the conductive path, therefore improving the dielectric and energy storage properties of PVDF-based composites. The dielectric constant of PVDF/CTAB@Sep/C-MWCNTs composites increases by 8 times compared with that of pure PVDF at 1 kHz, while the loss remains at only 0.08. Under an electric field of 110 kV·mm–1, the discharge energy density is 4.03 J·cm–3, and the energy storage efficiency reaches 81.85%. Therefore, this work provides an alternative strategy for preparing high-performance polymer-based energy storage materials under low field strength.

This study presents a bioinspired strategy to overcome the strength-toughness trade-off in polyurethane (PU) elastomers by engineering a synergistic dynamic hydrogen-bonding network. Herein, we developed a single-step, noncovalent functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using tannic acid (TA) and polyethylenimine (PEI), which enables uniform dispersion and strong interfacial interactions with PU. The resulting TA-PEI/MWCNTs/PU fibers exhibit unprecedented mechanical properties (true stress: 1.6 GPa, toughness: 690.2 MJ/m3), surpassing natural spider silk and conventional engineering materials. The innovation lies in the cooperative reinforcement mechanism: (1) TA-PEI/MWCNTs act as stress-transfer bridges via π–π interactions and hydrogen bonding; (2) dynamic H-bonds dissipate energy through reversible bond breaking; and (3) aligned microstructure enhances crack resistance. This scalable approach offers a paradigm for designing high-performance elastomers in flexible electronics and wearable devices.

Wearable gas sensors have drawn great attention for potential applications in health monitoring, minienvironment detection, and advanced soft electronic noses. However, it still remains a great challenge to simultaneously achieve excellent flexibility, high sensitivity, robustness, and gas permeability, because of the inherent limitation of widely used traditional organic flexible substrates. Herein, an electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber network was designed as a flexible substrate, on which an ultraflexible wearable gas sensor was prepared with in situ assembled polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a sensitive layer. The unique nanofiber network and strong binding force between substrate and sensing materials endow the wearable gas sensor with excellent robustness, flexibility, and gas permeability. The wearable sensor can maintain stable NH3 sensing performance while sustaining extreme bending and stretching (50% of strain). The Young’s modulus of wearable PAN/MWCNTs/PANI sensor is as low as 18.9 MPa, which is several orders of magnitude smaller than those of reported flexible sensors. The water vapor transmission rate of the sensor is 0.38 g/(cm2 24 h), which enables the wearing comfort of the sensor. Most importantly, due to the effective exposure of sensing sites as well as the heterostructure effect between MWCNTs and PANI, the sensor shows high sensitivity to NH3 at room temperature, and the theoretical limit of detection is as low as 300 ppb. This work provides a new avenue for the realization of reliable and high-performance wearable gas sensors.

Photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors hold immense potential for converting incident light signals into electrical signals, finding applications in sensing, astronomy, night vision, and communication. However, their widespread adoption is hindered by issues such as slow response times, low responsivity, and poor stability. In this study, a high-performance self-powered PTE detector based on the Ag2Se nanorods (NRs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is reported for the first time. The findings reveal that the electrical conductivity of the film increases with the addition of MWCNTs, albeit at the expense of the Seebeck coefficient. Notably, the film containing 0.5 wt% MWCNTs exhibited a superior power factor (303.22 μW·m-1·K-2) at 300 K. Owing to the high PTE performance, the photosensitive properties are characterized in an ultra-broadband range from the violet (405 nm) to infrared (2,500 nm) wavelengths, featuring rapid response time (1.4 s) and substantial output voltage (6.83 mV). Furthermore, the device demonstrated remarkable stability, with only a 3.4% decrease in output voltage after three months of air exposure and negligible changes in thirty cycles. Thus, the proposed device presents a novel strategy for developing PTE detectors characterized by broadband coverage, fast response times, and exceptional stability.

Abnormal purine metabolism can result in oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction, heightening the risks for conditions such as gout and cardiovascular disorders, which may subsequently trigger various physiological dysfunctions. Thus, the rapid and sensitive detection of metabolic abnormalities in purines is crucial for the early diagnosis and prevention of related diseases. Zebrafish has emerged as a popular model organism in metabolic, genetic, and toxicological studies due to its high genetic similarity to humans and the transparency of its embryos, facilitating observation. In this study, we developed a novel electrochemical sensor based on m OMe-Ir-PI/MWCNTs@PDA/GCE to detect purine molecules sensitively. Using this method, we analyzed the electrochemical behavior of zebrafish embryos, correlating the electrochemical signals with X/G and HX/A. Investigating purine metabolism in zebrafish embryos across different developmental stages, we found that from the cleavage stage to the somite formation stage, the activity of degrading enzymes increased, leading to enhanced purine oxidative degradation and the activation of metabolic pathways. This resulted in a decline in purine content, observed as decreasing electrochemical signals. Conversely, from the somite formation stage to hatching, cell differentiation, tissue formation, and organ development accelerated, leading to an increase in purines involved in energy metabolism and biosynthesis, which was reflected in rising electrochemical signals. This study represents the first application of electrochemical methods for detecting purine metabolism in zebrafish embryos throughout various developmental stages, thus providing insights into the role of purine metabolism in early life development.
