Construction of SnS-Mo-graphene nanosheets composite for highly reversible and stable lithium/sodium storage

Deliang Cheng,Lichun Yang,Renzong Hu,Jie Cui,Jiangwen Liu,Min Zhu

Sn-based chalcogenides are considered as one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high capacities through both conversion and alloying reactions. However, the realization of full capacities of Sn-based chalcogenides is mainly hindered by the large volume variation and inferior reversibility of conversion reaction during cycling. In present work, a new ternary SnS-Mo-graphene nanosheets (SnS-Mo-GNs) composite is fabricated by a simple and scalable plasma milling method, in which SnS nanoparticles are tightly bonded with Mo and GNs. The Mo and GNs additives can effectively alleviate the large volume change of SnS upon cycling, which leads to a stable electrochemical framework. Moreover, they can significantly suppress the Sn agglomeration in lithiated SnS, which enables highly reversible conversion reaction during cycling. As anode for LIBs, the SnS-Mo-GNs composite exhibits a high initial coulombic efficiency of 86.9% (almost complete reversibility of SnS, ∼97.3%), high cyclic coulombic efficiency after initial three cycles (> 99.5%), and long lifespan (up to 600 cycles). Moreover, it also demonstrates superior electrochemical performance for sodium storage. Thus, this work demonstrates a potential anode for batteries application and provides a viable strategy to obtain highly reversible and stable anodes for lithium/sodium storage.

Facile growth of AgVO3 nanoparticles on Mo-doped BiVO4 film for enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Lili Gao,Xuefeng Long,Shenqi Wei,Chenglong Wang,Tong Wang,Feng Li,Yiping Hu,Jiantai Ma,Jun Jin

BiVO 4 is largely restricted by its intrinsic poor electron mobility and sluggish surface reaction. Aiming at eliminating the deficiency of BiVO 4 , we assemble a novel composite photoanode through simultaneous bulk and surface modification. In detail, controllable Mo doping is manipulated through a spin-coating method, and AgVO 3 nanoparticles are loaded by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) process. The as-prepared photoanode boosts the photocurrent density by 7 folds at 1.23 V vs. RHE and moves the onset potential negatively by 387 mV compared to the bare BiVO 4 . Furthermore, the charge injection efficiency is substantially boosted to 49% at 1.23 V RHE , nearly 5 times as that of pure BiVO 4 . With detailed physical and electrochemical characterization, we reveal the essential reason for the boosted photoelectrochemical activity. Appropriate Mo doping can simultaneously enhance the carrier density and electron mobility of BiVO 4 . Specifically, more (0 4 0) facet are exposed for retarding charge recombination and increasing photocatalytic reaction sites. Then the simple SILAR process grows AgVO 3 nanoparticles homogeneously with uniform diameter of 3–5 nm on BiVO 4 , forming p-n heterojunction to accelerate charge separation, and abundant oxygen vacancy emerged on the surface, which has been demonstrated as active sites for water oxidation reaction.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Mo alloys reinforced with the combination of PSZ and Ti3AlC2

Tianrun Ma,Fengshun Du,Bohua Duan,Dezhi Wang,Zhuangzhi Wu,Xinli Liu

The development of novel Mo alloys that combine high strength and toughness has been a critical goal in the research community. A co-reinforced Mo alloy was prepared through powder metallurgy by adding partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) and MAX phase Ti 3 AlC 2 to the Mo matrix. The influence of varying PSZ/Ti 3 AlC 2 ratios on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mo alloys was thoroughly studied. The results indicate that as the PSZ/ Ti 3 AlC 2 ratio is increased, the density, elongation, and fracture toughness of sintered molybdenum alloys are enhanced, while their strength and hardness also show varying degrees of improvement. At a PSZ/Ti 3 AlC 2 ratio of 7:3, the prepared Mo alloy exhibits optimal comprehensive properties, with a relative density of 96.8%, a hardness of 193.1 Hv, a tensile strength of 537.4 MPa, an elongation of 21.69%, and a fracture toughness of 29.1 MPa·m 1/2 . The synergistic effect of PSZ and Ti 3 AlC 2 optimizes the alloy's microstructure and enhances its overall performance through multiple mechanisms. PSZ has a more pronounced effect on the ductility, whereas Ti 3 AlC 2 plays a more significant role in enhancing the strength. The findings provide a new strategy for the preparation of high-performance molybdenum alloys.

Mo(SO)2 porous nanoparticles achieve effective antibacterial through electron attack on the respiratory chain

Yaqi Cui,Zulpya Mahmut,Yangdong Xie,Fangyu Shi,Jiaqi Zhou,Yaqi Zhu,Ruilin Lou,Zhenzhou Wang,Lin Xu,Lin Wang,Biao Dong

Manipulating the “bacterial current” by targeting the electron transport chain (ETC) presents a transformative antibacterial strategy, yet achieving precise targeting and elucidating the molecular mechanism remain challenging. Here, we break through the synthetic bottleneck to engineer a robust, electron-donating nanomaterial for targeted bacterial ETC disruption. A novel in-situ sulfur-doping and vacancy-engineering strategy was employed to fabricate porous Mo(SO)₂ from MoS₂, which features abundant oxygen vacancies and expanded interlayer spacing. These vacancies serve as electron-deficient centers that facilitate a rapid and strong electron donation. By functionalizing with 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) for targeting, the electrons are specifically transferred to the bacterial ETC. We systematically unveil the molecular mechanism: the donated electrons suppress the expression of ubiC , a key chorismate lyase for ubiquinone synthesis, via interaction with the guanidyl group of Arg63. This disruption halts proton pumping and ATP synthesis, leading to bacterial death via energy depletion.

Evolution of structural dependent superconducting properties on Re-Os-W-Mo-Ta high entropy alloys

Manikandan Krishnan,Jiaojiao Meng,Bai-zhuo Li,Yanmei Ma,Cao Wang,Dilip Bhoi,Yoshiya Uwatoko,Qiang Jing,Bo Liu

Structural, superconducting ground state, and normal state properties on Re-Os-W-Mo-Ta high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were investigated using powder x-ray diffraction, magnetization measurements, electrical resistivity analysis, and specific heat measurements. The structural phase transformation was found to develop through compositional variations of the primary elements of HEAs, leading to the formation of phases such as bcc-type Re23Os5W33Mo34Ta5, σ-type Re31Os18W23Mo23Ta5, and α-Mn-type Re33Os34W11Mo11Ta11. These impurity-free samples, displaying a single-phase structure, exhibit bulk superconducting behavior. Low-temperature specific heat analysis indicates that the bcc-type and σ-type HEAs exhibit weakly coupled, whereas the α-Mn-type HEA exhibits strongly coupled, isotropic and fully gapped superconductivity. Moreover, the stability of bcc-type, σ-type, and α-Mn-type HEAs is significantly influenced by key factors such as valence electron count and electronegativity differences. This study presents observations of structural transformations in HEAs driven by compositional variations without the introduction of additional elements, providing significant insights into the correlation between structural changes and superconducting properties in highly disordered systems.

Mo-mediated electronic modulation of RuO2 for improved acidic oxygen evolution activity and Ru retention

Yuhan Wang,Yihao Qu,Min Yu,Ji Yang

Proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysers require active and stable anodic oxygen evolution catalysts. RuO 2 offers high intrinsic activity but dissolves rapidly in acid. Here, high-valence molybdenum is introduced into rutile RuO 2 to regulate the local Ru-O chemical and electronic environment. The sample labels Mo-x-RuO 2 refer to nominal Mo/(Mo + Ru) precursor ratios. XRD, EDS, XPS and DFT analyses support Mo incorporation within the rutile framework and reveal an altered local Ru/O chemical environment, providing insights into the electronic regulation induced by Mo incorporation. Mo-17-RuO 2 requires 207 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec −1 . After 75 h of acidic half-cell operation, it shows 6.64% cumulative Ru dissolution based on the nominal initial Ru loading. The commercial RuO 2 reference exhibited 27.95% cumulative Ru dissolution after approximately 17 h of operation. For the selected computational models, the AEM- and LOM-like pathways exhibit comparable thermodynamic limiting steps, with theoretical overpotentials of 275 and 262 mV, respectively, suggesting that Mo incorporation modulates oxygen reaction energetics without exclusively favoring a single pathway. These findings provide insight into composition-dependent Mo engineering for improving the performance and Ru retention of acidic OER catalysts.

Crystal structure and dielectric properties of Mo-modified BaZnP2O7 ceramics in microwave and terahertz frequencies

Yongjie Zhou,Cheng Liu,Xinlin Wei,Junxiao Liu,Liang Shi,Hao Li,Yuanxun Li,Huaiwu Zhang

In this study, BaZnP 2- x Mo x O 7+ x /2 (BZPM x , 0 ≤ x  ≤ 0.03) ceramics were successfully sintered at low temperatures via the solid-state reaction. Rietveld refinement, surface morphology characterization, and Raman spectroscopy were employed to clarify the effects of Mo 6 + substitution on the crystallology and microstructure evolution of the BZPM x ceramics. Dielectric properties were evaluated in both microwave and terahertz frequencies. Optimal microwave dielectric properties were obtained at x  = 0.02, sintered at 825 ℃ for 4 h: ε r = 8.073(±0.012), Q×f = 73,172(±1187) GHz (@13.687 GHz), and τ f = -31.9(±1.6) ppm/℃. Compared with the pure BaZnP 2 O 7 ceramic sintered at 875 ℃ ( Q×f = 47,984 GHz and τ f = −40.2 ppm/℃), the incorporation of Mo 6+ could reduce the dielectric loss and improve the thermal stability while reducing the sintering temperature simultaneously. In the terahertz frequency range of 0.2 ∼ 1.2 THz, the ε r values decreased to 5.35 ∼ 7.24 while the tan δ values were within the range of 0.0105 ∼ 0.0319. All experimental results indicated that the BZPM x ceramics are promising for LTCC devices in both microwave and terahertz frequencies.

Modulating Hydrocarbon Coverage on Mo-Doped RuO2 Anodes Enables Energy-Efficient and Selective Kolbe Electrolysis

Jian Yang,Fan Lin,Shaojie Lei,Zichen Li,Hui Zhang,Zhibao Huo,Dezhang Ren

The development of efficient and low-energy-consumption electrocatalytic decarboxylation (Kolbe electrolysis) is of great significance for the conversion of biomass-derived carboxylic acids into high-grade hydrocarbon fuels. RuO2 is considered a promising anode material. However, its intrinsic high activity towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) poses challenges in terms of reaction selectivity and high driving potentials in practical applications. This study investigated the modulation of RuO2 electrode performance through the systematic screening of various metal dopants (Mo, Ta, Zr, W, Sn). Results show that while doping generally enhances OER, certain dopants sustain decarboxylation under high potentials by suppressing OER via hydrocarbon product coverage. Among them, the Mo-doped RuO2 coating improved decarboxylation selectivity and Faradaic efficiency to some extent while facilitating product desorption to inhibit interface resistance increase. By further optimizing the doping ratio and calcination temperature, the resulting RuO2-5%Mo anode achieved a remarkable reduction in cell voltage (by approximately 1 V) in the presence of OA during constant-current electrolysis, leading to a ~20% decrease in energy consumption per unit product compared to undoped RuO2, alongside good stability over 10 cycles. This work provides new material design strategies and mechanistic insights for developing Kolbe electrolysis anodes with high selectivity and low energy consumption.

Constructing Asymmetric M-SV-Mo Active Sites to Boost Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation for Water Purification

Hongji Chen,Yue Mao,Zihao Ji,Ho Ngoc Nam,Quan Manh Phung,Hongfei Yin,Shuo Liu,Chunyu Yuan,Xiang Li,Dongdong Xiao,Yusuke Asakura,Yongzheng Zhang,Yusuke Yamauchi

Enhancing the activation efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS) is crucial for improving the catalytic performance of Fenton-like reactions. Strategies on the regulation of active sites and the enhancement of interfacial electron transfer from catalysts to PMS have become central to achieving effective PMS activation in Fenton-like catalysis. In this work, single-atom M-doped sulfur vacancies (S v )-MoS 2 (M = Co, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) catalysts with atomic-level asymmetric M-S V -Mo sites are proposed for efficient PMS activation and the degradation of organic pollutants. Among these catalysts, the Co-S V -MoS 2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability, resulting in a removal efficiency of ≈100% for Rhodamine B (RhB) within just 6 min. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the construction of asymmetric Co-S V -Mo sites effectively enhanced the electron density near the Fermi level, facilitated more electron transfer to PMS as well as lengthened the O–O bond of PMS, thereby significantly promoting the generation of ROS. This work provides a strategy for regulating atomic-level active sites and a novel perspective for developing advanced Fenton-like catalysts.

Improved H₂S sensing performances of facility-synthesized In₂O₃ nanocubes by doping with Mo

Xiaohua Wang,Yanwei Li,Guang Sun,Jianliang Cao,Yan Wang

The pressing demand for environmental and health safeguarding has spurred intense enthusiasm among researchers to delve into metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) based gas sensors. Particularly, the accurate detection of trace hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), which has drawn growing attention, has become a focal point. Herein, a molybdenum (Mo) doping strategy was presented to enhance the H₂S-sensitive properties of In₂O₃ nanomaterials to detect the presence of 1 ppm H₂S at comparatively lower temperatures. The Mo-doped In₂O₃ cubic nanoparticles (Mo-In₂O₃ CNPs) were synthesized through a hydrothermal route using In(OH) 3 as a precursor. When used as a sensitive material for the detection of H₂S, the Mo–In₂O₃ CNPs have shown some impressive improvements compared to pure In₂O₃ counterparts, including a reduction in working temperature (240 °C vs 300 °C), an increase in sensitivity (18.46 vs 11.34 for 20 ppm H₂S), a better selectivity (6.2 vs 2.84 times to ethanol), and a lower limit of detection (0.79 vs 0.47 ppm). Even to 1 ppm H₂S, the Mo-In₂O₃ sensor can give a response of 2.18, signifying its application feasibility in detecting trace amounts of H₂S. The multiple sensitization effects and their potential mechanism of Mo-In₂O₃ CNPs were discussed in detail.

Highly Efficient Catalytic Oxidation of Glucose to Formic Acid over Mn-Mo Doped Carbon Nanotube

Hongrui Guo,Fan Yang,Siwei Chen,Hejuan Wu,Jirui Yang,Feng Shen

The production of formic acid (FA) from lignocellulose and its derived sugars represents a pivotal upgrading reaction in biorefinery. This work prepared a Mn-Mo doped carbon nanotube composite catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of glucose into FA in an O2atmosphere, under extremely low Mn (3.27%) and Mo (0.40%) loading conditions, displaying a comparable performance with the traditional vanadium-based catalyst suffering from toxicity issues. It was confirmed that the doping of Mo led to the formation of MnMoOXand increased the contents of low-valence Mn species (Mn2++ Mn3+), lattice oxygen (Olatt), and surface adsorbed oxygen (Oads) based on various characterization methods, such as XRD, XPS, TEM and ICP, which were beneficial to improve the catalytic performance. The maximum FA yield of 58.8% could be achieved over Mn9Mo1OX@MWCNT after reaction for 6 h at 140 °C, which was far more than that obtained with undoped MnOX@MWCNT (14.5%) at the identical conditions. Glyoxylic acid and arabinose were identified as two main intermediates, suggesting that the transformation of glucose into FA over Mn9Mo1OX@MWCNT involved two different paths. This work proved that manganese-based catalyst was a green alternative for upgrading lignocellulose via catalytic oxidation.

High-efficient separation mechanism of Co/Mo/V system by ethanolamine-induced phosphonic acid extractants

Hongtao Liu,Jiawei Wen,Lei Cao,Junlian Wang,Xin Wang,Guoyong Huang,Shengming Xu

Conventional phosphonic acid extractants such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204) have only been used for cobalt extraction and perform poor separation efficiency. In this work, we propose a route to synergistically extract and separate Co, Mo, and V from spent hydrogenation catalysts by utilizing the modulating effect of ethanolamine (MEA) on phosphonic acid-based extractants, which eliminates the need for saponification and acidification of the extractants. The extraction mechanism of V, Co and Mo have been explained detailedly. By performing quantum chemical calculations on the surface properties of various amines, their metal extraction effects were predicted and validated using machine learning, laying the foundation for the design of synergistic extractants. The Co/Mo/V selective separation process was finally built with the aim of extracting cobalt first in the form of Co(RNH 2 ) 2 A 2 . At a P204 concentration of 25 %, MEA addition of 5 %, stirring time of 10 min, stirring rate of 400 rpm, the combined recoveries of the three metals Co, V and Mo reached 94.56 %, 85.60 % and 88.81 %, the separation factors β Co/Mo and β Co/V could be increased up to 44748.77 and 1174.04, respectively. It was also demonstrated that the extractant was also suitable for the selective extraction of Ni 2+ . This work provided fundamental research for the development of high-performance extraction systems.
