Unraveling the Beneficial Electrochemistry of IrO2/MoO3 Hybrid as a Highly Stable and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalyst

Muhammad Tariq,Waqas Qamar Zaman,Wei Sun,Zhenhua Zhou,Yiyi Wu,Li-mei Cao,Ji Yang

Minimization of noble metal contents along with enhancement in electrochemical properties with high durability is a major challenge to be overcome for commercializing water electrolyzers and cheap energy storage devices. Sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) within the electrolytic cell and high energy demand to form O═O bonds have attracted more responsiveness to this area. We report the OER beneficial mixed oxide composite of molybdenum and iridium oxides by a facile hydrothermal method. Adhered IrO2 nanoparticles on MoO3 large particles synergistically possessed a robust nature toward harsh acidic water electrolysis as compared to an alkaline environment. Mass specific OER activity of iridium active centers was greatly enhanced by 7-fold, twice the current density, and was attributed to electronic modulation of noble metal. Enhanced surface area and the existence of highly oxidative species in the O(1s) spectrum of IrO2 and two doublet regions in the X-ray photoelectron spectrum of molybdenum metal were found, accountable for the robust performance. Prepared composite possessing only 30% molar fraction of noble metal presented an excellent long-term stability for 40 000 s. Reduction in the Tafel slope from 57 to 77 mV dec–1 for IM-30 and IrO2 respectively was observed. The conducted research will open up new avenues for more applications of molybdenum oxides and their derivatives for water splitting.

Rapid room-temperature preparation of MoO3−x quantum dots by ultraviolet irradiation for photothermal treatment and glucose detection

Hongru Zu,Yanxian Guo,Haiyao Yang,Di Huang,Zhiming Liu,Yingliang Liu,Chaofan Hu

Oxygen deficient molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) spurred intense scientific interest in biomedical research owing to the strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect in NIR region. Although a considerable number of methods have been used to prepare MoO3−x nanomaterials, most of them are limited by long reaction time, low yield and poor water solubility of the products. Herein, a novel ultraviolet irradiation method was developed to synthesize MoO3−x quantum dots (QDs) within 30 min, which rendered excellent water solubility and low cytotoxicity. The as-prepared MoO3−x QDs exhibited a relatively narrow size distribution with an average diameter of 5.63 nm, which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, an intense LSPR effect in NIR regions was verified by UV-vis spectroscopy. Thus, the materials were used in photothermal ablation of cancer and glucose detection, showing high photothermal conversion efficiency and good sensitivity.

Fe containing MoO3 nanowires grown along the [110] direction and their fast selective adsorption of quasi-phenothiazine dyes

Ying Cao,Huixiang Wang,Xiaobo Ren,Fan Li,Jing Wang,Ruimin Ding,Liancheng Wang,Jianbo Wu,Zhong Liu,Baoliang Lv

Herein, MoO3 nanowires (Fe–MoO3 NWs) along the [110] direction were successfully synthesized in the presence of Fe3+ cations. The Fe–MoO3 NWs present a large specific surface area of 174.7 m2 g−1 and rich surface –OH groups, and the possible formation mechanism of such a structure is due to the adsorption of Fe3+ cations toward non-(110) planes of MoO3 in solution with pH greater than its isoelectric point. The obtained Fe–MoO3 NWs show excellent and highly selective adsorption capacity toward quasi-phenothiazine dyes (methylene blue, toluidine blue, azure I, and acridine orange). The dye removal rate could reach 99% in 3 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity is up to 144.3 mg g−1 and the adsorption is up to 28.86 mg g−1 per minute, which is 11 times greater than that of pure MoO3 and far greater than that of the recently reported MoO3 nanostructures. This excellent selective adsorption performance of Fe–MoO3 NWs was mainly attributed to the enhanced chemical adsorption of quasi-phenothiazine dyes by rich surface –OH groups and Fe species through hydrogen bond and coordination bond adsorption with N and S, respectively, which was confirmed by adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics. These results suggest the potential application of Fe–MoO3 NWs in the field of water pollution treatment.

Coupled MoO3−x@CoP heterostructure as a pH-universal electrode for hydrogen generation at a high current density

Pengzuo Chen,Kaixun Li,Yutong Ye,Doufeng Wu,Yun Tong

Developing high-performance and low-cost self-supporting electrodes as pH-universal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) and realizing high-quality hydrogen production at a high current density are highly desirable, but are hugely challenging. We created a self-supporting electrode with a coupled hierarchical heterostructure by simple electrodeposition followed by sulfurization. It comprised oxygen-deficient molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) and cobalt phosphide (CoP) on nickel foam (NF), which represented a highly active pH-universal electrocatalyst for the HER at a high current density. Benefiting from a plethora of catalytic active sites, improved interfacial charge transfer, and strong electronic interaction, this type of MoO3−x@CoP/NF electrode delivered a superior catalytic performance. Overpotentials of only 100 mV, 135 mV, and 400 mV were needed to realize a high current density of 1 A cm−2 in alkaline, acid and neutral media, respectively, which were superior to those of most other well-developed materials based on non-noble metals. Our experimental work demonstrates the synergistic advantages of a MoO3−x@CoP heterostructure for improving the intrinsic catalytic performance but also paves a new path for the rational design of advanced electrodes for hydrogen generation in a wide range of pH conditions.

Facile Ball-Milling Strategy for Constructing Covalently Connected Black Phosphorus–MoO3–x Heterostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Miaomiao Hu,Jiafeng Zhu,Wenyao Guo,Qunjie Xu,Yulin Min,Jinchen Fan

Photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen is considered to be a promising approach to clean, sustainable, and renewable energy. The highly efficient photocatalysts play a key role in photocatalytic hydrogen production. Owing to its high charge carrier mobility and tunable band gap, black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a potential photocatalyst. However, when using BP for photocatalytic hydrogen production individually, the inherent instability and light-harvesting capability greatly restricted the further application, as well as the fast photogenerated electron–hole recombination. Herein, a novel heterostructured photocatalyst BP-MoO3–x was prepared via the direct ball-milling method for H2 photogeneration. The result demonstrated that coupling BP with the localized surface plasmonic defective MoO3–x through covalent Mo–P bond improves the chemical stability, enables the visible-to-near infrared photons to harvest, and promotes the photogenerated carrier separation. As a result, the BP-MoO3–x could deliver high photocatalytic hydrogen production rates of 396.3 and 156.4 μmol·g–1·h–1 under visible and near-infrared lights, which are ∼40 and 80 times higher than that of BP without any sacrificial agent, respectively. Furthermore, the BP-MoO3–x also shows good stability under visible light irradiation from cycle stability testing. Combining with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the synergistic effect of Z-scheme BP-MoO3–x heterostructure and strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhances light-harvesting capacity and improves the photoexcited charge transfer efficiency.

In situ enhance lithium polysulfides redox kinetics by carbon cloth/MoO3 self-standing electrode for lithium–sulfur battery

Zeng Min,Wang Mingshan,Zheng Luojia,Gao Weichen,Liu Rui,Pan Jie,Zhang Hongqing,Yang Zhenliang,Li Xing

Lithium-sulfur battery is expected to be the new generation of high-performance electrochemical storage system benefiting from its high energy density and low cost. However, the slow redox kinetics caused by the low conductivity of sulfur and the shuttle effect result from lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) limit its practical utility. In this work, a highly efficient strategy of freestanding carbon cloth supported molybdenum oxide (CC/MoO 3 ) with in situ deposition of Li 2 S 8 as an active matrix is designed. This chemistry enables strong affinity of Li 2 S 8 on CC/MoO 3 electrode, meanwhile, the strong polarity of MoO 3 catalyzes the mutual transformation of LiPSs and inhibits the shuttle of liquid LiPSs. With the above superiorities, the CC/MoO 3 @Li 2 S 8 electrode shows impressive electrochemical performance, with a high initial discharge specific capacity of 1274 mAh g −1 at a rate of 0.1 C with the sulfur loading of 2 mg cm −2 , and a capacity retention rate of 93.1% compared to the initial stable specific capacity. Even with a high sulfur loading of 4 mg cm −2 , it still maintains high electrochemical activity with a high reversible specific capacity of 916 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Those results show that coupling polar metal oxide material with flexible conductive carbon cloth provides a highly efficient catalytic/conductive network to accelerate sulfur utilization and stability. Graphical abstract A highly efficient strategy of freestanding carbon cloth supported molybdenum oxide with in-situ deposition of Li 2 S 8 as active matrix is realized, resulting in a robust Li + storage capacity for lithium-sulfur battery.

Spray deposition of colorimetric H2 detector with Pd/MoO3 nanocomposites for rapid hydrogen leakage monitoring at room temperature

Xiaolu Sun,Lifeng Hao,Liuyang Chen,Xingkui Guo,Chuang Han,Jingfu Chen,Weicheng Jiao,Rongguo Wang,Xiaodong He

Here, we demonstrate a rapidly responsive colorimetric hydrogen detector based on Pd/MoO 3 nanocomposites for hydrogen leakage monitoring at room temperature. The Mo 5+ -rich MoO 3 nanobelts are synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method by adding NaCl as the mineralizer. The structure of the detector is fabricated by a general spray deposition technique, not only forming uniform porous microstructures to promote the adsorption and diffusion of H 2 but also solving the issue of performance degradation in ambient conditions by the strategy of on-site fabrication for immediate detection. The detector exhibits a rapid color change which could be recognized with naked eyes within 10 s even in as low as 1% of H 2 at room temperature (25 °C) owing to the high content of active absorption sites (Mo 5+ ) and the large surface area. The detector is also tested on a hydrogen storage tank with a prefabricated defect in the inner liner and exhibits a prompt and intense color change at the exact hydrogen leakage site, demonstrating its high efficiency in the visual hydrogen leakage detection in complicated systems. The facile fabrication approach as well as the rapid visual detection strategy enable the detector extensively applicable in the hydrogen industry.

2D amorphous-MoO3−x@Ti3C2-MXene non-van der Waals heterostructures as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Pengfei Yan,Liang Ji,Xiaopeng Liu,Qinghua Guan,Junling Guo,Yonglong Shen,Haijun Zhang,Weifeng Wei,Xinwei Cui,Qun Xu

2D heterostructures offer a great opportunity in seeking high-performing energy storage materials ; however, performance ceiling exists, limited by their van-der-Waals (vdW) interactions. Here, we explore a novel 2D, amorphous MoO 3−x (aMoO 3−x ) on Ti 3 C 2 -MXene, non-vdW heterostructure via a facile synthesis route. Density functional theory computations suggest that the non-vdW heterostructure can strongly stabilize aMoO 3−x while maintaining electrical conductivity at a high level. Facile 2D Li-ion diffusion can then be achieved in the restacked 2D non-vdW heterostructures due to the weakened interactions between two defective MoO 3−x layers, leading to a capacitor-like interlayer diffusion reaching a large capacity of 426 C g −1 on the surface of the amorphous layer and a diffusion-controlled intralayer diffusion of 546 C g −1 within the amorphous layer. These characteristics optimize Li-ion storage kinetics while achieving full capacities of amorphous materials with high stability. This work might offer a feasible platform of 2D non-vdW heterostructures for boosting and understanding Li-ion storage performance.

Highly enhanced H2 evolution of MoO3/g-C3N4 hybrid composites based on a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system

Kunqiao Li,Wanbao Wu,Yanqiu Jiang,Zhe Wang,Xing Liu,Junzhuo Li,Debin Xia,Xianzhu Xu,Jizhuang Fan,Kaifeng Lin

The Z-scheme photocatalytic system has great potential in solar energy conservation with simultaneous wide light-absorption range, efficient electron–hole pair separation and strong redox ability. Herein, a direct Z-scheme g-C3N4/MoO3 photocatalytic composite with oxygen vacancies is successfully fabricated via a facile in situ method of a one-pot pyrolysis strategy. The as-prepared g-C3N4/MoO3 possesses a porous architecture with increased specific surface area. The existence of an oxygen vacancy in MoO3 is verified by XPS, UV-DRS analysis and electrochemical measurements. The g-C3N4/MoO3 exhibits superior visible-light photocatalytic performance for water splitting, as evidenced by an about 17-fold (20.52 μmol h−1) increase in the rate of H2 evolution relative to pristine C3N4 (1.23 μmol h−1). According to the characterization results and boosted photocatalytic performance, the migration and separation of photoinduced charge carriers in g-C3N4/MoO3 follows a possible mechanism based on a Z-scheme photocatalytic system constructed by the oxygen vacancies. The O-vacancy functions as the recombination and storage center for fast charge transfer through two components. The combined effect of defective MoO3 and a Z-scheme interfacial heterojunction has achieved greatly enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work demonstrates the facilitation effect of an effective Z-scheme system involving oxygen vacancies on the charge transfer to enhance the photocatalytic activity for water splitting.

Constructive defect engineering MoO3 and CdLa2S4 to form S-scheme heterojunction for synergistic and efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Weijie Zhang,Lufang Fan,Kai Wei,Changchang Ma,Sheng Feng

This work provided innovative apertures with great exploratory value for engineering oxygen defects and designing S-scheme photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this study, the S-scheme heterostructure CdLa 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x (CLSMO) was synthesized by electrostatic self-assembly to solve the problem of electron hole recombination in hydrogen evolution half-reaction. The results showed that the hydrogen precipitation rate of the optimized CLSMO was 41.41 mmol g -1 h −1 , which was 12.70 times higher than that of monomeric CLS. The presence of oxygen vacancies (Ovs) increased the range of light absorption and reduces the surface dynamic barrier. More importantly, the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that CdLa 2 S 4 and MoO 3-x strictly followed the S-scheme charge transfer path, accumulating photogenerated electrons in the CLS conduction band, and achieving efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. This study provided a new idea to solve the problem of photocatalyst activity using OVs and S-scheme heterojunctions.

A room-temperature ammonia gas sensor based on the h-MoO3@Graphene composite film with fast response time

Yu Chang,Jianan Zhang,Ivan S. Babichuk,Hailong Liu,Yijie Liu,Jian Yang

The release of ammonia (NH 3 ) in industry or daily life is harmful to human health. A gas sensor was developed using h -MoO 3 nanorods and graphene film to detect and eliminate this. The h -MoO 3 nanorods were first synthesized by chemical bath deposition using ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (NH 4 ) 6 Mo 7 O 24 •4H 2 O and HNO 3 and then deposited on the graphene film transferred to SiO 2 /Si substrate by electrochemical bubbling method. Subsequently, gas-sensitive h -MoO 3 @Graphene composite films were prepared and analyzed using Raman, XRD, SEM, and UV–vis. The gas sensor's performance was evaluated to detect NH 3 at a room temperature concentration range of 1–60 ppm. Compared with graphene, the conductivity of the composite film with 10 mg/ml h -MoO 3 nanorods was increased by 40 % and the sensitivity increased by 10 times. The sensor h -MoO 3 @G-10 showed the best sensing performance to 1 ppm NH 3 . Sensor sensitivity, response and recovery time are 1.1 %, 46.8 s and 17.8 s.

Vacancy-dependent interfacial Mo-S bridge in S-scheme CdIn2S4/MoO3-x heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting

Kai Wei,Jiasheng Zhu,Lufang Fan,Weijie Zhang,Huarui Han,Changchang Ma,Kan Hu,Sheng Feng

Here, we constructed S-scheme CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x (CISMO) photothermal catalyst with interface Mo-S bond for efficient overall water splitting. As expected, hydrogen (H 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) evolution rates of the optimized CISMO reached 554.71 and 277.88 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , respectively, far higher than that of CdIn 2 S 4 (71.78 and 34.45 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and MoO 3-x (0 and 21.83 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). Mechanism analysis revealed that the photogenerated carrier transfer followed an S-scheme route. More importantly, the photocatalytic performance of CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x was highly relevant with the oxygen vacancies (Ovs) in pristine MoO 3-x . In S-rich environment, the Ovs could be imbedded by sulfur (S) for the formation of interface Mo-S bond during CISMO fabrication. Interface Mo-S bridge facilitated the photogenerated carriers transfer between CdIn 2 S 4 and MoO 3-x . Moreover, the metal-free localized surface plasmon resonance effect, originating from the residual Ovs in CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x , could further enhance the water splitting performance through photothermal conversion. This work shed light on controllable interface chemical bond formation in heterojunction photocatalysts to signally promote the photocatalytic performance.
