Compared to the generation of singlet oxygen in photodynamic therapy, photo-generation of nitric oxide (NO) would not be limited by the concentration of molecular oxygen. However, therapeutic applications of exogenous nitric oxide are usually limited by its short half-life and its vulnerability to many biological substances, thus straightforward and precise control over NO delivery may be critical to its therapeutic effects. Herein, we demonstrate a mitochondrial-targeting and photoactive NO-releasing system as an anticancer drug. Fabricated by covalently incorporating a photo-responsive NO-donor and a mitochondrial targeting ligand onto carbon dots, this nanosystem exhibits a multi-functional nature which combines mitochondrial-targeting, photocontrollable NO-releasing and cell imaging. Upon cellular internalization, the nanosystem could target mitochondria effectively. Furthermore, the system displays little dark toxicity under physiological temperature; but upon light irradiation, it could release NO, efficiently damage mitochondria and consequently cause prominent apoptosis of cancer cells. Moreover, evaluated by using MTT assay, this nanosystem shows high cytotoxicity towards two cancer cell lines. These observations provide new insights for exploiting NO in disease therapy.

MnO and CeO 2 powders were mechanically mixed by a spatula and by milling to obtain loose-contact and tight-contact mixed oxides, respectively. The monoxides and their physical mixtures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, O 2 temperature-programmed desorption (O 2 -TPD), H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and NO temperature-programmed oxidation (NO-TPO). The MnO x -CeO 2 solid solutions did not form without any calcination process. The oxidation state of manganese tended to increase while the ionic valence of cerium decreased in the mixed oxides, accompanied with the formation of oxygen vacancies. This long-ranged electronic interaction occured more significantly in the tight-contact mixture of MnO and CeO 2 . The formation of more Mn 4+ and oxygen vacancies promoted the catalytic oxidation of NO in an oxygen-rich atmosphere.

Ordered mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanomaterials were successfully prepared through the nanocasting route using SBA-15 and KIT-6 as hard templates. These mesoporous nanomaterials were characterized using XRD, BET, TEM, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, NO-TPD, XPS and DRIFT. The low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity of NO with NH3 was investigated, which revealed that 3D-MnCo2O4 using KIT-6 as a template can totally clean all NO over a wide temperature range of 100–250 °C with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 32 000 h−1, while 2D-MnCo2O4 with SBA-15 as a template had 95% conversion rate at the same condition. 3D-MnCo2O4 showed the best performance to clean NO due to its typical three-dimensional porous structure, large specific surface area, abundant active surface oxygen species and Lewis acid sites. All the results indicate that a novel, cheap catalyst for catalytic removal of NO can be designed by controlling the morphology at the nanoscale.

Neoadjuvant radiotherapy, a preoperative intervention regimen for reducing the stage of primary tumors and surgical margins, has gained increasing attention in the past decade. However, radiation-induced skin damage during neoadjuvant radiotherapy exacerbates surgical injury, remarkably increasing the risk of refractory wounds and compromising the therapeutic effects. Radiation impedes wound healing by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species and inducing cell apoptosis and senescence. Here, a self-assembling peptide (R-peptide) and hyaluronic-acid (HA)-based and cordycepin-loaded superstructure hydrogel is prepared for surgical incision healing after neoadjuvant radiotherapy. Results show that i) R-peptide coassembles with HA to form biomimetic fiber bundle microstructure, in which R-peptide drives the assembly of single fiber through π–π stacking and other forces and HA, as a single fiber adhesive, facilitates bunching through electrostatic interactions. ii) The biomimetic superstructure contributes to the adhesion and proliferation of cells in the surgical wound. iii) Aldehyde-modified HA provides dynamic covalent binding sites for cordycepin to achieve responsive release, inhibiting radiation-induced cellular senescence. iv) Arginine in the peptides provides antioxidant capacity and a substrate for the endogenous production of nitric oxide to promote wound healing and angiogenesis of surgical wounds after neoadjuvant radiotherapy.

Synergistic removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) can be achieved using multifunctional catalytic membranes. In this work, CePO4 nanorods were loaded on the pore surfaces of SiC membranes to construct the CePO4/SiC-X catalytic membranes. The stacked nanorod structure of the CePO4 catalyst layer facilitates the diffusion of gases to the catalyst surface during reactions. Owing to the high specific surface area, rich surface acidity, and strong redox capacity, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane exhibits the best ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (NH3–SCR) denitration activity, achieving >90% NO conversion at a temperature of 250–380 °C and negligible N2O byproduct. In addition, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane demonstrates excellent H2O and SO2 resistance. The performance of dust filtration and simultaneous dust filtration and denitration at 250–350 °C proposed that the dust rejection efficiency reached more than 99% at various conditions, and the dust filtration process did not affect the NH3–SCR performance of the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane. From the above results, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane presents a broad application prospect in the simultaneous dust removal and denitration of high-temperature flue gas.

Nitrogen oxides are an industrial and domestic waste gas, which pollutes the air and affects health. In this paper, we use the template method to achieve the doping of alkaline earth metals, and the alkaline earth metals are doped into cerium-manganese-based three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) catalysts to detect NO oxidation. The introduction of alkaline earth metals can improve the stability and thickness of macroporous results, which increases the contact area between the catalyst and reactant gases. At the same time, alkaline earth metal doping can promote the formation of more oxygen vacancies and unsaturated structures, and improve the catalytic activity of NO oxidation. The NO conversion rate of CM-3Mg doped with 3% Mg was 61.25% at 250°C, and the NO conversion rate was the highest at 303°C, which was 79.2%. This study provides a promising catalyst candidate for NO oxidation in practical applications.

CeO2–CuO/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by three different methods and their activities for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 were investigated. As can be seen from the experimental results, the catalyst prepared by the single-step sol–gel (SG) method showed the best SCR activity and resistance to SO2 and H2O. In order to investigate the relationship between the preparation method and the performance of SCR catalysts, the catalysts were characterized by using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed reduction with hydrogen, temperature programmed desorption with ammonia, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques. It was found that the excellent performance of CeO2–CuO/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by the single-step SG method should be resulted from its large surface area, low crystallinity, high oxygen storage capacity, high NH3 adsorption capacity, high concentration of surface chemisorbed oxygen, weak sulphation process and weak water absorption.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a prevalent critical condition in hospitalized patients with an elevated risk of death. Challenges in AKI management persist due to the absence of efficient early diagnostic modalities and the lack of effective therapeutic interventions, imposing significant burdens on medical resources for prolonged treatment. Here, we proposed a second near-infrared (NIR-II) photoacoustic imaging (PAI) guided triggered on-demand release of (nitric oxide) NO from the injury zone to monitor and treat AKI through the anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and oxidative stress-damage-reducing cell- or organ-protective effects of NO. We engineered hollow copper sulfide nanoparticles (Cu 9 S 8 NPs) loaded with platelet membrane-encapsulated NO-releasing precursors (S-Nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine, SNAP), as a nanoplatform for early AKI diagnosis and precise spatiotemporal NO release Besides acting as a drug carrier, the inherent PAI compatible Cu 9 S 8 also enables targeted renal injury localization, exploiting the natural propensity of platelets to accumulate at vascular injury sites, facilitating real-time AKI monitoring in murine models. Experiments demonstrated that nitric oxide delivery nanoparticles can specifically target and accumulate in the kidney, reduce inflammation, and promote damage repair. Overall, this gas therapy strategy represents a new therapeutic pathway for the clinical AKI management.

Conventional Anammox systems using NO₂ − -N as an electron acceptor consistently face challenges of incomplete nitrogen removal due to NO₃ − -N production. Nitric oxide, a key intermediate in nitrogen cycling, presents a promising alternative electron acceptor for Anammox bacteria (AnAOB). To explore its feasibility, this study investigates the effects of NO on nitrogen transformations, microbial community dynamics and metabolic regulation within Anammox systems. Results revealed that NO elicited varied responses among nitrogen-transforming bacteria. Specifically, NO stimulation increased the relative abundance of AnAOB by 20.1 %–40.2 %, while suppressing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and denitrifiers (DNB). Consequently, the NO-dependent Anammox pathway contributed 15.4 % of total nitrogen removal and the NO₂ − -based pathway improved by 49.4 % according to isotope tracing. This shift was attributed to the ability of AnAOB to moderately uptake and efficiently utilize NO, maintaining intracellular NO levels 13.6 %–45.6 % lower than other bacteria, thereby avoiding oxidative stress and enhancing core metabolism. Additionally, NO facilitated ecological niche differentiation, strengthening interspecies cooperation mediated by metabolites, particularly between AnAOB and DNB ( Planctomycetia bacterium , Cyanobacteria bacterium CYA , etc.). Notably, NO supplementation increased NH 4 + -N removal by 1.5–1.9 times, with ΔNO₃ − -N/ΔNH₄ + -N decreasing by 45.2 %–54.8 %. These findings underscore the potential of NO-enhanced Anammox systems for advanced nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment.

The environmental benefits of photocatalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) critically depend on the selective conversion of NO to nitrate (NO 3 − ) rather than to toxic by-products like nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). However, conventional photocatalysts suffer from low carrier separation efficiency and insufficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in low selectivity of NO 3 − and high levels of toxic by-products. To address this issue, this study incorporates sulfur into thin-layer Bi 2 MoO 6 to induce charge rearrangement, precisely regulate electron transfer pathways, and promote the generation of targeted ROS. Experimental results showed that the S-doping Bi 2 MoO 6 catalyst exhibited exceptional photocatalytic performance, achieving 71.2 % NO removal efficiency, 93.1 % NO 3 − selectivity, a low NO₂ by-product concentration (43.2 ppb), and good cycle stability. Combining electron spin resonance (ESR) and ROS quenching experiments, the S-doping mediated electron transfer mechanism and ROS dominated by 1 O 2 were revealed, and the synergistic effect between surface electron enrichment and O 2 activation was elucidated. Theoretical calculation indicated that S 2− could act as electron capture centers to promote directional transfer of electrons by the strengthen Bi S covalent interaction, achieving high chemical adsorption activation of O 2 to trigger 1 O 2 generation. This research provides a novel strategy for steering ROS generation through directed electron transfer engineering, advancing the development of efficient and eco-friendly photocatalysts for air pollution remediation.

Photo/electrocatalytic ammonia (NH3) synthesis via nitrous oxide (NOx) reduction is challenged by low NO solubility in electrolytes, inefficient electron and proton supply, and the high cost of separating NH3 from dilute NH4+ product solutions. In this study, we present a continuous, separation-free gas–solid photoreduction strategy for direct NH3 gas production from flue gas, enabled by dynamic band structure regulation of the photocatalyst. Comprehensive in situ characterization and theoretical analysis demonstrate that this approach utilizes photoexcited oxygen vacancies (PVO) in TiO2 to generate high-energy electrons in deep conduction bands, thereby enhancing the reduction capacity, accelerating electron transfer, and lowering the activation energy for both H2O dissociation and NO hydrogenation. The real-time tracking of NO radicals in a gas–solid system using operando EPR provides crucial mechanistic insights into high-energy electron behavior and the NO-to-NH3 conversion pathway, where these high-energy electrons not only promote efficient NO-to-NH3 conversion but also prevent toxic N2O byproduct formation, ensuring selective and efficient reduction. The optimized TiO2–PVO catalyst achieves an NH3 production rate of 79.86 ± 3.48 μmol g–1 h–1 with nearly 100% selectivity, a 16-fold improvement over pristine TiO2. This study offers valuable insights into solar-driven gas–solid NH3 synthesis from flue NOx.

Liver fibrosis (LF) is a leading cause of liver-related mortality worldwide. Although antifibrotic drugs are commonly used in clinical practice, their efficacy remains limited. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the fibrotic liver microenvironment play a crucial role in LF progression. Nanozymes, owing to their enzyme-mimicking catalytic activity and antioxidant properties, offer a promising strategy for LF treatment. Vanadium-based nanozymes exhibit ROS-scavenging capabilities and promote fibrosis reversal, while zirconium (Zr)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), such as UiO-66, possess excellent biocompatibility and catalytic activity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of nanozymes is hindered by their intrinsic catalytic limitations. Ultrasound (US), a non-invasive therapeutic modality, has been shown to enhance nanozyme activity and improve treatment outcomes. In this study, we developed a dual-nanozyme composite (UiO-66/V 2 C/L-Arg/pPB, UVLp) with targeted ROS-scavenging and L-arginine (L-Arg) delivery capabilities. Upon ultrasound exposure, UVLp releases L-Arg and nanozymes, facilitating nitric oxide (NO) generation, alleviating oxidative stress, and mitigating liver fibrosis. This work introduces a novel ultrasound-activated nanozyme platform for LF therapy, providing valuable insights for clinical translation.
