Specific Sn–O–Fe Active Sites from Atomically Sn-Doping Porous Fe2O3 for Ultrasensitive NO2 Detection

Zhong Yihong,Yuan Guotao,Bao Dequan,Tao Yi,Gao Zhenqiu,Zhao Wei,Li Shuo,Yang Yuting,Zhang Pingping,Zhang Hao,Sun Xuhui

The heteroatom atomically doping strategy was reported to construct highly efficient sites on metal oxides for the detection of low-concentration gas. The atomically dispersed Sn atoms were intentionally incorporated into the Fe 2 O 3 lattice during the oxidative annealing of Fe-based metal organic framework, leading to specific Sn–O–Fe sites, porous structures, and abundant oxygen vacancies. The optimized Sn-Fe 2 O 3 exhibited exceptional sensing performance for NO 2 detection: ultra-high sensitivity ( Rg / Ra =2646.6 to 1 ppm NO 2 ), ultra-low limit of detection (10 ppb), and high selectivity.

A room-temperature nitrite-based hybrid bimetal molecular ferroelectric material: [(R)-3-quinuclidinol]2[LiCo(NO2)6]

Zhi-Yuan Yue,Rong-Meng Liao,Wang Luo,Na Wang,Le-Ping Miao,Heng-Yun Ye,Chao Shi

Organic–inorganic hybrid molecular ferroelectrics have attracted broad attention in the field of research of ferroelectric materials. Following the surge of stable candidates, hybrid bimetal molecular-based materials have been recently explored to achieve excellent ferroelectricity. However, rare hybrid bimetal molecular ferroelectrics were reported. Inspired by “ferroelectrochemistry”, a chiral nitrite-based hybrid bimetal molecular ferroelectric material, [(R)-3-quinuclidinol]2[LiCo(NO2)6] (1), was reported. The ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition (C2 ↔ P321) behaviour of 1; was found at 343 K (Curie temperature, Tc) with a spontaneous electronic polarization (Ps) of 0.52 μC cm−2 and a coercive field (Ec) of 48 kV cm−1 at 298 K. Various-temperature single crystal structural analysis and dielectric constant measurements reveal that the rapid rotation of the organic cation and slight order–disorder transition of the NO2− anion are the origin of the ferroelectricity. To our knowledge, 1 is the first example of a nitrite-based hybrid bimetal molecular ferroelectric material that is triggered by an external electric field. This finding establishes a clear stimulus–structure–response relationship in advanced hybrid ferroelectric materials.

The High Sensitivity NO2 Surface Acoustic Wave Sensor with New Sensing Film Made by a Novel Method

Youwang Hu,Chengzhi Xu,Ji'an Duan,Jiwen Xiang,Shu Wang,Xiaoyan Sun

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors have received great attention because of their compact design and excellent sensing performance, including high sensitivity, low detection limits. However, SAW sensors generally suffer from low quality of the solid thin films which has a significant effect to the detection performance of the sensors. To solve this problem, three different methods (spin coating, drop coating and spray coating) for fabricating thin films have been investigated for gaseous nitrogen dioxide (NO2) SAW sensors in this work. Spray coating method showed its advantages in improving the solid film quality of the sensing layer and the performance of the sensors. SEM characterization shows that the spray coating films are more uniform and poly-porous. Sensors with spray coating film can detect NO2 range from sub ppm to hundreds ppm with high sensibility and stability. Its sensitivity is 42.31 Hz/ppm and its sensing limit is down to 57.2 ppb.

[EMIm]NO2-Modified PVDF–HFP Ionic Gel Electrolyte Membranes for Improved Lithium-Ion Transport and Interfacial Stability

Ruifeng Wang,Huangxin Cheng,Jiangnan Li,Gengzhe Shen,Yu Li,Jingmei Lyu,Zhengjian Chen

Gel polymer electrolytes typically suffer from low ionic conductivity, limited oxidative stability, and thermal runaway. Nitrate additives can be beneficial, but they are limited by poor solubility. Herein, sandwich-structured ionic liquid gel electrolyte membranes were fabricated by incorporating a polyethylene (PE) interlayer between two poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF–HFP) layers loaded with LiTFSI and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([EMIm]NO2). The PFENE3 membrane prepared with 22.9 wt % [EMIm]NO2 shows optimal overall performance. Specifically, the PE scaffold provides robust mechanical strength (36.7 MPa). The incorporation of [EMIm]NO2 induces multiple synergistic effects: (i) increasing ionic conductivity to 5.03 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 25 °C by suppressing PVDF–HFP crystallinity; (ii) achieving a high Li+ ion transference number (0.449) by confining other charge carriers within the TFSI-[EMIm]+-NO2 hydrogen-bonding network; and (iii) the sacrificial decomposition of NO2 to form robust protective interphases on both the anode and cathode. Consequently, Li/PFENE3/Li symmetric cells demonstrated stable cycling for over 600 h at 0.3 mA cm–2. Furthermore, the Li/PFENE3/NCM622 full cell delivered an initial capacity of 170.9 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and 159.3 mAh g–1 at 0.5 C, with 78% retention after 100 cycles, significantly outperforming [EMIm]NO2-free systems. These findings provide a viable strategy for developing high-performance and safe Li-metal batteries.

On-chip surface-enhanced Raman scattering arrays for selective sensing of NO2 exhaust emissions from construction machinery

Yaping Tian,Ran Xu,Luqing Chen,Yuanyuan Liu,Xinming Nie,Xinyu Liu,Shoufeng Tang,Lulu Qu

Nitrogen oxides from construction machinery exhaust pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, effective capture and highly selective detection of NO 2 is of utmost importance. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a spectroscopic technique that provides molecular fingerprint information and enables qualitative and quantitative analysis of molecules at extremely low concentrations. However, the application of SERS for gas molecules with small scattering cross sections, such as NO 2 , is still in its infancy. Based on this, a sensing device for capturing and selectively detecting NO 2 from construction machinery exhaust was developed. The device consists of a gas collection module and a Raman signal amplification module containing a 4, 4’-diaminodiphenyl disulfide (APDS) probe-modified flexible Au@PDMS chip. The Au@PDMS chip amplifies the Raman signals of molecules, while the APDS selectively and rapidly captures NO 2 . The proximal electron-rich nitrogen atom and the ortho-electron-poor aromatic hydrogen atom of the APDS probe form a stable six-membered ring complex with the N atom of NO 2 , and hydrogen bonding interactions occur between the H atom in APDS and the O atom in NO 2 . This ring complexation allows the Au@PDMS chip to capture NO 2 quickly and effectively, resulting in changes in SERS signals and facilitating quantitative analysis of NO 2 . Combined with the gas detection device, the chip can identify NO 2 within 5 min with a detection limit of 3.5 ppm. This sensor device has high selectivity for NO 2 detection in real exhaust gases and has great potential for practical detection of construction machinery exhaust gases.

Synergistically enhanced room-temperature NO2 gas sensing via Au-decorated hierarchical SnO2 nanosheets under blue light excitation

Yihui Wang,Ting Yu,Huijun Yin,Shangyi Shen,Zhenqi Yang,Bohui Wang,Xingjie Wu,Honglong Chang,Haitao Zhao

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), a significant atmospheric pollutant primarily emitted from combustion processes, poses substantial environmental and health risks, underscoring the critical need for accurate detection methods. Conventional SnO 2 -based sensors are typically constrained by high operating temperatures and limited sensitivity. This study overcomes these limitations by introducing a novel approach that combines noble metal modification with bandgap-matched light excitation, enabling high-performance NO 2 detection at room temperature. Au/SnO 2 composites with hierarchical nanosheet architectures were synthesized via hydrothermal and impregnation methods, as confirmed by SEM. Their sensing properties were systematically investigated under blue light excitation. Among the samples tested, the 2.5 wt% Au/SnO 2 sensor demonstrated superior performance, exhibiting a remarkable response (149.25 @ 5 ppm), a low detection limit (150 ppb), and excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and humidity tolerance at room temperature. First-principles calculations reveal that the enhanced sensor performance originates from a synergistic effect between Au nanoparticle decoration, which enhances NO 2 adsorption and charge transfer, and the additional photogenerated carriers induced by blue light excitation. This study provides novel material design insights for developing high efficiency room temperature NO 2 sensors.

Low detection limit and high sensitivity NO2 gas sensor based on PdO/NiMoO4/NiO ternary composite materials

Zhang Saisai,Liu Shijie,Xing Mingli,Zhang Bo,Zhang Bowen,Wang Na Luo Yan

Developing nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensors that simultaneously deliver high sensitivity, selectivity, and long‑term stability remains a considerable challenge for practical applications. In this work, nanoflower‑like PdO/NiMoO 4 /NiO composites with tunable PdO loadings were fabricated via a hydrothermal method combined with in‑situ impregnation and annealing. The constituent nanosheets measure approximately 200 nm in length and 20 nm in thickness. The optimized sensor with 0.5 wt% PdO loading achieves a response of 59.94 toward 1 ppm NO 2 at 160 °C, representing a 3.7‑fold enhancement over the unmodified NiMoO 4 /NiO sensor, along with good selectivity and long‑term stability. This performance improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of heterojunction formation and PdO catalytic activation, which facilitate charge transfer and surface reaction kinetics. These results demonstrate the potential of the ternary composite for practical NO 2 detection. Graphical The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

Hydrazine-functionalized Al-MOF with pore-size regulation for selective iodine capture in NO2-containing off-gas

Guangyuan Chen,Zeru Wang,Chuan Tan,Yi Tan,Yawen Liu,Yikun Huang,Tao Duan,Lin Zhu

To address the competitive adsorption of NO 2 during gaseous iodine capture from spent fuel reprocessing off-gas, a hydrazine-functionalized aluminum-based metal-organic framework, CAU-10-N 2 H 3 , was constructed based on CAU-10. Considering the difference in kinetic diameter between I 2 and NO 2 , hydrazine functionalization was employed to synergistically regulate the pore size and pore electronic environment. After the introduction of -N 2 H 3 , the median pore size decreased from 0.6174 to 0.5186 nm, and the NO 2 uptake was reduced by 42.91%. Meanwhile, the introduced electron-rich -N 2 H 3 groups strengthened the interaction between the framework and iodine species, leading to adsorption capacities of 551.99 and 155.93 mg·g −1 for I 2 and CH 3 I, respectively, at 150 °C. Dynamic breakthrough experiments further showed that the I 2 adsorption capacity was only slightly affected by NO 2 , decreasing from 259.3 mg·g −1 under N 2 to 218.8 mg·g −1 under 5% NO 2 . Mechanistic analyses revealed that the introduced -N 2 H 3 groups promoted the conversion of I 2 into polyiodide species, thereby strengthening both iodine adsorption and fixation. These results demonstrate that introducing electron-rich functional groups to synergistically regulate pore size and pore environment is an effective strategy for improving the selective iodine capture performance of Al-MOFs in complex spent fuel reprocessing off-gas.

Fe3+-Induced surface hole generation for selective •OH formation and efficient NO2 Suppression in photocatalytic NO oxidation

Yuerui Ma,Peng Chen,Jiazhen Liao,Xing’an Dong,Wenjie He,Wendong Zhang

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of NO to nitrate (NO 3 – ) over toxic NO 2 remains challenging due to low selectivity and inefficient charge migration in existing systems. This study introduces Fe 3+ as an electron acceptor beneath a Bi 4 TaO 8 Cl/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction to precisely regulate electron pathways and promote targeted hydroxyl radical ( • OH) generation. Combined experimental and DFT analyses reveal Fe 3+ ’s dual role: enhancing interfacial electron transfer and activating H 2 O at surface sites to form • OH. The optimized heterojunction achieves 68.19 % NO conversion with minimal NO 2 selectivity (10.98 %). ESR and ROS quenching confirm Fe 3+ -driven electron migration enriches surface holes, boosting H 2 O adsorption and • OH production (2.76-fold increase). The strong oxidation capacity of • OH suppresses NO 2 formation, favoring complete NO oxidation to NO 3 – . This work provides a strategic approach for selective NO removal by electron-pathway engineering, advancing the design of eco-friendly photocatalysts for air pollution control.

Binary Solvent Engineering Modulates the Microstructure of Stretchable Organic Field-Effect Transistors for Highly Sensitive NO2 Sensing

Xiao Jiang,Jiaqi Zeng,Linxuan Zhang,Zhen Zhang,Rongjiao Zhu

Stretchable organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), with inherent flexibility, versatile sensing mechanisms, and signal amplification properties, provide a unique device-level solution for the real-time, in situ detection of trace gaseous pollutants. However, serious challenges remain regarding the synergistic optimization of OFET gas sensor production preparation, mechano-electrical properties, and gas-sensing performance. Although the introduction of microstructures can theoretically provide OFETs with enhanced sensing performance, the high-precision process required for microstructure fabrication limits scale-up. Herein, a straightforward hybrid solvent strategy is proposed for regulating the intrinsic microstructure of the organic semiconductor layer, with the aim of constructing an ultrasensitive PDVT-10/SEBS fully stretchable OFET NO 2 sensor. The binary solvent system induces the formation of nanoneedle-like structures in the PDVT-10/SEBS organic semiconductor, which achieves a maximum mobility of 2.71 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , a switching current ratio generally exceeding 10 6 , and a decrease in mobility of only 30% at 100% strain. Specifically, the device exhibits a response of up to 77.9 × 10 6 % within 3 min and a sensitivity of up to 1.4 × 10 6 %/ppm, and it demonstrates effective interference immunity, with a response of less than 100% to nine interferences. This work paves the way for next-generation wearable smart sensors.

High-performance and humidity-resistant NO2 gas sensors using ZnO/SnO2 Nano-heterostructures: Experimental and DFT study

Sufaid Shah,Muhammad Sajid,Mobashar Hassan,Zeeshan Muhammad,Xiaojin Zhao,Shahid Hussain,Matin Ashurov,Osama Gohar,Xiaofang Pan

We report a precisely controlled two-step hydrothermal synthesis of stannic oxide (SnO 2 ) nanoparticle-decorated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods and a comprehensive study combining experimental analysis with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to explain the improvement mechanism of NO 2 sensing. The optimized ZnO/SnO 2 sensor shows a significantly enhanced response of 249.9 s to 5 ppm NO 2 at 150 °C, a temperature particularly lower than that of many conventional metal oxide sensors, with fast response/recovery times (77/80 s) and outstanding selectivity. Importantly, the sensor demonstrates dynamic performance in humid environments and exceptional long-term stability. DFT calculations disclose that the heterojunction formation enables stronger NO 2 adsorption ( E ads  = −1.0 eV) and greater charge transform which is confirmed by density of states analysis. This study provides not only a high-performance sensor candidate for real-world NO 2 detection but also a profound mechanistic insight through the synergy of experimental besides theoretical approaches.
