An Electrochemical Biosensor Based on NiO Nanoflowers/Polymethylene Blue Composite for Non-Enzymatic Glucose Detection

Luyi Zhu,Zhenbo Wei,Jun Wang,Jianli Zhong

It is of great importance to determine the quantification of glucose in human serum. In this work, a novel NiO nanoflower/polymethylene blue (NiO/PMB) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated and taken as a non-enzymatic glucose biosensor. The composite was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical properties of the modified biosensor were investigated by the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. This biosensor combined the advantages of NiO nanoflower and PMB, so that a series of characterization results indicated that the composite material exhibiting satisfactory catalytic activity towards glucose. The quantitative determination of glucose was carried out by chronoamperometric measurements (i–t) method and showed linear ranges between 3−50 μM and 50−80 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 2 × 10 −7 M (S/N = 3). Under optimal conditions, the sensitivity of the self-assemble biosensor was calculated to be 413.06 μ A cm−2 mM−1 for glucose. The selectivity, reproducibility, and stability of the glucose biosensor were also confirmed in the study. In addition, this glucose biosensor was successfully applied for the analysis of glucose in real human serum samples.

Orderly Arranged Bead-Chain Cu2O-Mn3O4-NiO Ternary Nanocomposites with High Specific Capacitance for Supercapacitors

Lei Su,Chunyong Zhang,Li Shu,Linna Huang,Jianning Li,Hengfei Qin

A series of metal oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized by electrospinning technology. The obtained nanocomposites (Cu 2 O-Mn 3 O 4 -NiO) are an ordered arrangement of metal oxide particles (10 nm), with the shape like bead chain. The acquired Cu 2 O-Mn 3 O 4 -NiO ternary nanocomposites were used as electrode materials to manufacture a supercapacitor. Electrochemical tests showed that the synthesis of nanocomposites made of electrode materials had good electrochemical performance in 6 mol/L KOH electrolyte. The results showed that at a scan rate of 5 mV/s, the specific capacitance of Cu 2 O-Mn 3 O 4 -NiO had a larger specific capacitance of 1306 F/g than NiO, Cu 2 O-NiO and Mn 3 O 4 -NiO. The excellent electrochemical performance showed that the electrostatic spinning method is an effective technology for developing nanocomposites for energy storage devices.

A comparison of NiO–CuO–CeO2 composite catalysts prepared via different methods for CO oxidation

Yafei Guo,Guodong Wang,Xi Yao,Bingqian Liu

Several NiO–CuO–CeO 2 catalysts were prepared via different methods and characterized by different techniques. Structure-activity relationships of the catalysts were demonstrated, and the effect of preparation methods on CO oxidation behaviors was illustrated. Catalytic results evidenced that the NiCuCe-CP and NiCuCe-SG catalysts prepared by co-precipitation and sol-gel methods exhibited better CO oxidation activities and kinetic performance, as evidenced by their lower T 50 values (102 °C and 100 °C) and apparent activation energies (48.80 and 59.28 kJ/mol) as well as higher reaction rates (3.84 and 3.45 μmol/g/s). The XRD and HRTEM results suggested that the active species showed uniform dispersion with minimum crystallite size in the desired catalysts. The XRD, XPS , H 2 -TPR and Raman analysis suggested the formation of Ce 1- x Cu x O 2- δ and Ce 1- x Ni x O 2- δ solid solutions, indicating that the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods reinforced the interactions amongst the ternary metal oxides . This would afford the catalysts more oxygen vacancies for boosted CO oxidation activity. The mechanism was then proposed with the dual synergetic effects in solid solutions for facilitated oxygen mobility and the amorphous active metal oxides for promoted CO chemisorption . The desired NiCuCe-CP and NiCuCe-SG catalysts show potential application for CO abatement in closed-loop air revitalization.

NiO nanosheets on pine pollen-derived porous carbon: construction of interface to enhance microwave absorption

Wang Huiya,Wu Xiaofen,Wang Qiuyue,Chen Siyi,Chen Gang,Dong Chengjun,Guan Hongtao

Efficient microwave absorbing materials have been drawn extensive attention. Herein, biomass porous carbon (BPC) from pine pollen has been obtained through KOH carbonization. In order to tune the microwave absorption, NiO has been composited with the as-prepared BPC with different contents. Despite the high specific surface area for the BPC activated at 600 °C, it exhibits poor microwave absorption properties as pure NiO. In contrast, the BPC/NiO composite with proper nickel precursor (0.1:1.0) has the maximum reflection loss ( RL ) of − 52.6 dB at 10.0 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth ( RL  < − 10 dB) reaches up to 4.9 GHz (from 7.8 to 12.7 GHz) when the absorber thickness is 3 mm. Three-dimensional porous architecture, interfacial polarization and their related relaxation from defects and interfaces cooperatively favor the impedance matching and strong EM wave attenuation capacities, which brings about multiple absorption mechanisms of the microwave. The present study not only provides a facile route to prepare porous carbon, but also sheds light on a new strategy in constructing BPC/NiO composites for excellent microwave absorption.

1D hierarchical CdS NPs/NiO NFs heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation

Chonghai Deng,Hanmei Hu,Hong Yu,Man Wang,Mengyi Ci,Lili Wang,Sane Zhu,Yiping Wu,Huirong Le

One-dimensional (1D) hierarchically structured CdS nanoparticles (NPs)/NiO nanofibers (NFs) heterostructures with remarkable removal efficiency for diazo dye Congo red (CR) were fabricated by a stepwise synthesis process, which was involved a chemical bathing deposition combined with calcination, and a microwave-assisted wet chemical reaction. The crystal phases, morphologies, optical absorption properties, and adsorption/photocatalytic activity of as-prepared products were investigated by XRD, FESEM, TEM, high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum respectively. The experimental results indicated that binary satellite- core CdS NPs/NiO NFs heterojunctions are comprised of n-type CdS NPs with size of 10–30 nm decorated onto 1D p-type NiO NFs with diameter of 60–180 nm and length up to microns, which are self-assembled by nanoparticles with 30–100 nm in size. The possible formation mechanism for satellite-core structured CdS/NiO heterojunction is proposed. Interestingly, the decolorization efficiency over CdS/NiO heterostructures reached up to 91.2% in removal of aqueous CR at high concentration within 40 min under visible light irradiation, which was approximately 5.2 and 3.8 times as high as that of pure CdS nanocrystals (NCs) and the mixture of NiO NFs and CdS NCs. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was also investigated. The as-designed hybrid CdS NPs/NiO NFs heterostructures exhibited improved photocatalytic activity, which is attributed to the enhancement of the visible light adsorption, the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and the high adsorption capacity towards CR molecules, thereby displaying superior visible- light-driven photodegradation of CR in high concentration. This work may provide a green engineering heterojunction technology to develop the advanced multifunctional nanocomposites for their applications in wastewater purification.

Bin Tong,Gang Meng,Zanhong Deng,Jingjing Gao,Hongyu Liu,Tiantian Dai,Shimao Wang,Jingzhen Shao,Ruhua Tao,Fantai Kong,Wei Tong,Xuan Luo,Xiaodong Fang

Identifying the defect type which closely correlates with gas/metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) interfacial charge exchange is of utmost importance for rationally designing high performance MOS gas sensors, which are essential for the emerging sensing electronics for assessing the personal health and environment pollution. Herein, we report the sensing performance of p-type NiO toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) molecules could be drastically improved by Sc dopant . At an optimal doping ratio of 7.4 at.%, the sensor response to 100 ppm acetone was boosted from 8.2 (pure NiO) to 109.4, with a low detection limit of 10 ppb. Comprehensive defect characterizations indicate surface unsaturated oxygen vacancy (V O ) defects act as active sites that facilitate the interfacial charge exchange at elevated temperatures. Our work highlights that abundant V O defects induced by aliovalent Sc dopant play an important role in boosting the sensitivity of p-type NiO toward VOCs, and provide valuable guidance in designing high performance p-type MOS sensors.

Core-Shell NiO/C@NiFe-LDH Nanocomposite as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xue Li,Mingli Fan,Danan Wei,Xiaolong Wang,Yinling Wang

Highly efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts have been urgently needed for the development of renewable hydrogen energy via water electrolysis. Herein, a core-shell NiO nanoparticles decorated carbon sphere (NiO/C) and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanocomposite (NiO/C@NiFe-LDH) was prepared by a calcination-hydrothermal synthesis approach. In this nanocomposite, NiO/C as the core were derived from Ni based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs), which not only provide a porous and conductive carbon support for NiFe-LDH nanosheets to expose active sites, but also offer a synergistic active site for NiFe-LDH nanosheets. The structure and morphology of NiO/C@NiFe-LDH were mainly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption test. The OER catalytic activity of NiO/C@NiFe-LDH was optimized by adjusting the ratio between NiO/C and NiFe-LDH and adding bridging agents. Under the optimum conditions, the overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 for NiO/C@NiFe-LDHs is only 299 mV(vs RHE), lower than that of commercial RuO2 (330 mV). Besides, the NiO/C@NiFe-LDH exhibits a good stability in 10-hour testing. These results show that the ingenious combination of different OER catalysts may be an effective strategy to prepare low-cost OER catalysts with good performance.

Homogenous Cr and C Doped 3D Self-Supporting NiO Cellular Nanospheres for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhaojun Tan,Chuanbin Li,Lijun Wang,Mingjie Kang,Wen Wang,Mingqi Tang,Gang Li,Zaiqiang Feng,Zhenwei Yan

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one promising technique to obtain high-purity hydrogen, therefore, exploiting inexpensive and high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts is a matter of cardinal significance under the background of achieving carbon neutrality. In this paper, a hydrothermal method was used to prepare the Cr-NiC2O4/NF (Ni foam) precursor. Then, the NiO-Cr-C/NF self-supporting HER catalyst was obtained by heating the precursor at 400 °C. The catalyst presents a 3D cellular nanospheres structure which was composed of 2D nanosheets. Microstructure characterization shows that Cr and C elements were successfully doped into NiO. The results of electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that under the synergy of Cr and C, the conductivity of NiO was improved, and the Gibbs free energy of H* (∆GH*) value is optimized. As a result, in 1.0 M KOH solution the NiO-Cr-C/NF-3 (Ni:Cr = 7:3) HER catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 69 mV and a Tafel slope of 45 mV/dec when the current density is 10 mA·cm−2. Besides, after 20 h of chronopotentiometry, the catalytic activity is basically unchanged. It is demonstrated that C and Cr co-doping on the lattice of NiO prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and subsequent heat treatment to improve the catalytic activity and stability of the non-precious metal HER catalysts in an alkaline medium is facile and efficient. Keywords:hydrogen evolution reaction;NiO;electrocatalysts;nanosphere

Direct Laser Printing of 3D Porous Ni(OH)2/NiO Microarchitectures via Confined Interfacial Nucleation

Wenxiang Hou,Yusheng Zhang,Xuefei Chen,Xun Wang,Dayu Li,Wendai Cheng,Xixi Gong,Qu Wang,Ruofan Huang,Guanyuan Su,Chunmei Zhang,Liang Yang

Abstract Transition-metal hydroxides and oxides are widely used in optoelectronic and electrochemical devices, yet precise control over their three-dimensional (3D) microarchitecture and morphology remains a major challenge for microscale device fabrication. Here, we report a laser-confined interfacial nucleation and hierarchical growth (LCING) strategy that enables direct laser printing of Ni(OH)2/NiO microarchitectures with high spatial resolution and programmable porous structures. The localized photothermal field drives interfacial nucleation and hierarchical growth, allowing conformal integration of hydroxide microstructures and flexible construction of complex 3D geometries. We further elucidate the coupled mechanisms of mass transport, heat transfer, and reaction kinetics governing the LCING process. By rationally tuning laser printing parameters, the morphology and porosity of the resulting microstructures can be precisely controlled. The printed Ni(OH)2/NiO microdevices enable high-resolution structural color patterning and enhanced sensing performance, with the 3D porous Ni(OH)2/NiO architectures showing improved gas-sensing responses compared with lower-dimensional and nonporous counterparts. This work presents a versatile and programmable approach for high-precision manufacturing of functional metal-oxide microdevices.

Morphology Engineering toward Highly Efficient NiO Nanocatalysts for Oxygen-Promoted Hydrogen Production from Formaldehyde Solution

Hongliang Zhu,Ziqiang Miao,Leilei Du,Renhong Li

Renewable biomass solutions for hydrogen production are a sustainable technology to boost the hydrogen economy, in which formaldehyde reforming into hydrogen using cost-effective catalysts has garnered significant attention. In this study, we successfully fabricated two stable NiO nanostructures with distinct morphologies, namely nanospheres and nanosheets, through a simple two-step process. The morphology-dependent efficiency of hydrogen production under oxygen-promoted conditions was investigated. The nanosphere-shaped NiO (NiO–NP) exhibited a distinctive three-dimensional network and showed a much higher turnover frequency (TOF: 277.2 h–1) for H2 production from alkaline formaldehyde (HCHO) solution at room temperature, in contrast to NiO nanosheets (NiO–NH, TOF: 153.3 h–1). Scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric tests revealed that the porous structures consisting of nanoribbons in NiO–NP catalysts facilitated the exposure of the active sites and mass transfer processes. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated a larger peak area ratio of defect sites/lattice oxygen in NiO–NP, suggesting a higher number of oxygen vacancies (Vo). This ensured favorable chemisorption of molecular O2 on the catalyst surface, establishing a channel for electron delivery to O2 species, which provided evidence for the more efficient hydrogen production of NiO–NP catalysts under oxygen partial pressure (pO2). Electron paramagnetic resonance results indicated that the breaking of the C–H bond of HCHO was coupled with the O2 reduction, forming •OOH through preferential two-electron reduction. Notably, •OOH played a crucial role as reactive oxygen species in dehydrogenation reactions, with the •OOH–NiO complex serving as the active center. These findings not only offer possibilities for enhancing catalytic performance through nanostructure engineering but also provide insights into hydrogen production from renewable biomass using cost-effective catalysts.

NiO nanoparticles decorated pine needle-liked CuO as efficient electrocatalysts to boost methanol oxidation reaction

Tang Xiao,Wang Zhenwei,Cai Dandan,Shao Qinsi,Qin Ziwei,Liu Yang,Li Wenxian,Li Ying,Zhang Jiujun

Design and synthesis of high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) are of great significance in energy conversion applications. In this work, g-NiO/CuO composites with high catalytic performance for MOR are successfully synthesized by a template method using g-C 3 N 4 flakes as the sacrificial template. NiO nanoparticles are dispersed uniformly on the surface of the pine needle-liked CuO substrate, resulting in a synergistic effect which can enhance the electrocatalytic MOR activity and stability of g-NiO/CuO catalysts. The catalyst shows a maximum peak current density of 159 mA cm −2 and also long-term stability. The bimetal-oxide-synergistic strategy in this work highlights a promising way for the design of catalysts with high electrochemical performance for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).
