Hierarchically organized porous materials are indispensable for advancing high-performance device applications. In this study, a morphological evolution of the primary-to-hierarchical microporous architecture was demonstrated by a facile one-step manipulation of the crystalline and breath figure (BF) co-ordering behaviour in poly(ethylene oxide)- block -polystyrene (PEO- b -PS) and PEO/PEO- b -PS blend films. The characteristic parameters of hierarchically ordered micro- and submicroporous films could be controlled by changing the volume content of the crystalline PEO block ( f PEO ). With the increasing of f PEO (0 ∼ 0.278), the shape of the pores changed from an open spheroid to a semiopen polygon and hierarchical ellipsoid within the polygon. Notably, 14% PEO/PEO- b -PS multilevel porous films exhibited an optimal morphology, with a relatively large micropore diameter (3.73 ± 0.94 μm) and submicropore diameter of (0.75 ± 0.70 μm). In addition, some hierarchical TiO 2 @C porous films with high porosity were successfully fabricated by the sol–gel, ageing and calcination methods. This simultaneous active control over both the crystallization process and the polymer solidification process offers an affordable one-step route for fabricating diverse predictable hierarchically organized porous materials.

Solid electrolytes with desirable properties such as high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stable window, and suitable mechanical strength, and stable electrode–electrolyte interfaces on both cathode and anode side are essential for high-voltage all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) to achieve excellent cycle stability. In this work, a novel strategy of using LiF and LiNO 3 as synergistic additives to boost the performance of PEO-PVDF/LLZTO-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) is developed, which also promotes the assembled high-voltage ASSLBs with dual-interfaces stability characteristic. Specifically, LiF as an inactive additive can increase the electrochemical stability of the CSE under high cut-off voltage, and improve the high-voltage compatibility between cathode and CSE, thus leading to a stable cathode/CSE interface. LiNO 3 as an active additive can lead to an enhanced ionic conductivity of CSE due to the increased free-mobile Li + and ensure a stable CSE/Li interface by forming stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li anode surface. Benefiting from the improved performance of CSE and stable dual-interfaces, the assembled NCM622/9[PEO 15 -LiTFSI]-PVDF-15LLZTO-2LiF-3LiNO 3 /Li cell delivers a high rate capacity of 102.1 mAh g −1 at 1.0 C and a high capacity retention of 77.4% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, which are much higher than those of the ASSLB assembled with additive-free CSE, with only 60.0 mAh g −1 and 52.0%, respectively. Furthermore, novel cycle test modes of resting for 5 h at different charge states after every 5 cycles are designed to investigate the high-voltage compatibility between cathode and CSE, and the results suggest that LiF additive can actually improve the high-voltage compatibility of cathode and CSE. All the obtained results confirm that the strategy of using synergistic additives in CSE is an effective way to achieve high-voltage ASSLBs with dual-interfaces stability.

Achieved coatings exhibiting coexistence of crystalline and amorphous SiO 2 phases. • Revealed the three-dimensional distribution and phase composition of coating pores. • Elucidated the mechanism by which SiO 2 coatings influence thermal management performance. • I corr is reduced by more than two orders of magnitude compared to the matrix. This study addresses the insufficient thermal stability and corrosion resistance of 7075 aluminium alloy by employing staged voltage-boosted plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technology to fabricate an ultra-thick composite coating containing amorphous/crystalline SiO 2 within an organosilicon electrolyte. The system investigated the regulation mechanisms of duty cycle on coating phase composition, microstructure, thermal control performance, and corrosion resistance. Utilising advanced characterisation techniques such as Grazing Incidence X-Ray diffraction, X-ray computed tomography, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, its underlying mechanisms were elucidated. By modulating energy input, the duty cycle significantly influenced coating growth, achieving a maximum thickness of 181.76 μm-far exceeding conventional PEO coating thickness levels. XCT analysis revealed the phase distribution and pore characteristics of the coating at a 20% duty cycle. Pores with diameters between 0 and 5 μm constituted the highest proportion (approximately 68.85%), while interconnected pores exceeding 30 μm in diameter dominated the total pore volume. Optimal thermal management performance was observed at a 30% duty cycle (absorptance 0.36, emissivity 0.89), confirming a critical thickness threshold (130 μm) and the pivotal role of amorphous SiO 2 . Corrosion resistance peaked at a 10% duty cycle, with corrosion current density reduced to 2.368 × 10 −8 A·cm −2 , representing a near two-order-of-magnitude decrease compared to the substrate. Background The speed of the interfacial polymerization reaction is considered to be the decisive factor for the thickness and surface morphology of the polyamide layer. The reaction rate can be controlled by controlling the diffusion rate of the aqueous monomer. Methods Here, firstly, polyethylene oxide was added into the aqueous solution to increase the viscosity of the aqueous phase to reduce the reaction rate. Then choline chloride (CC) was grafted on the surface of the nascent polyamide membrane by a surface grafting method for secondary modification. A polyamide nanofiltration membrane with a special Turing structure was prepared on the surface of polyethersulfone support membrane. The desalination performance of composite membrane was investigated. Significant findings The results showed that the addition of PEO resulted in the regular Turing structure on the surface of the composite membrane. When the addition amount reached 1%, the performance of the composite membrane was the best. After the secondary modification of CC, the rejection rate of Na 2 SO 4 was more than 96%, and the permeation flux could reach 125.9 L/(m 2 ·h·MPa). It is expected to be applied in the fields of seawater desalination and sewage purification.

Imine-linked porous organic polymers (POPs) have attracted much attention in gas separation due to their high porosity and adjustable structure, and they are great potential candidates for nitrogen-doped porous carbons for CO 2 /N 2 separation in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, we synthesized imine-linked POPs via a facile method and obtained their derived carbons N-CSs via carbonization under an inert atmosphere. We found that the textural structure and functional surface of N-CSs are well inherited and further developed due to the high thermal stability of N-POPs. Nitrogen-containing functional groups in N-POPs and N-CSs improved the interfacial compatibility between polymer and fillers via hydrogen bonds . The textural structure of N-CSs with abundant narrower ultra-micropores (0.53 nm), as well as high nitrogen functional groups (4.65 wt%), endows poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) membranes with superior molecular sieving ability for CO 2 over N 2 and fast CO 2 transport channels. For instance, MMMs with 2.0 wt% loading of N-CSs exhibit an admirable gas separation performance with CO 2 permeability of 540.4 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 61.3, surpassing the Upper bound (2019). The long-term stability of both MMMs is explored, which shows great potential in practical CO 2 capture applications. This strategy of carbonization of imine-linked porous polymers provides ideas for the preparation of high-performance porous carbon-based MMMs and carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs).

Solid-state poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolyte exhibits a low ionic conductivity at ambient conditions, and large interfacial resistance between PEO and electrodes obstructs its applications in lithium metal batteries. Heterogeneous solid electrolytes (HSEs) are an alluring solution for the exploitation of PEO. Herein, PEO/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/micron-sized Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) heterogeneous solid electrolytes are originally prepared to decrease the crystallinity of PEO and interfacial resistance between HSEs and electrodes. Heterogeneous solid electrolyte composed of PEO/PVDF-HFP/5% micron-sized LATP (PPL-5) exhibits superior electrochemical properties in ionic conductivity (3.01 × 10 −5 S cm −1 ), lithium transference number (0.55) at 30 °C, and a broad potential window (5.31 V). Li/PPL-5/Li symmetric cell displays a relatively stable potential response during 800 h cycling, authenticating long-term compatibility between the as-prepared electrolyte and lithium metal. LiFePO 4 (LFP) is used as a cathode to test the chemical and electrochemical stability of PPL-5. The discharge capacity of LFP/PPL-5/Li coin cell maintains 97.9 mAh g −1 at 0.8 C after 500 cycles with capacity retention of 86.7%. Such excellent performance of PPL-5 can be ascribed to the reduction of crystallinity of PEO and the improvement of the interfacial contact between electrolyte and electrodes, when PVDF-HFP and micron-sized LATP are simultaneously incorporated with PEO electrolyte.

Amphiphilic triblock copolymers of PEO–PPO–PCL with various block compositions have been synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) initiated by the OH group of methoxy–poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide) (Me–PEO–PPO). Their structures were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) measurements, and their self-assembly in aqueous solution was studied using fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and surface tension. For the copolymers studied in this paper, the critical aggregation concentrations (CAC) ranged from 5 × 10 3 to 2 mg/L. The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) decreased with increasing PCL block length, and the downtrend was more significant in the short PCL block length. All of the three copolymers were capable of solubilizing hydrophobic molecules (pyrene) in aqueous solution and copolymers with a longer PCL block exhibited a stronger solubilizing ability. The TEM images showed that the size and morphology of the aggregations could be tuned by varying the compositions or the concentration.

A photoresponsive poly(o-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine)-b-PEO (PNBL-b-PEO) polypeptide copolymer was synthesized and its photosensitive cleavage and self-assembly were monitored by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR, DLS, and TEM. Three kinds of dual-sensitive (i.e., photo/pH-thermo) polypeptide normal and reverse micellar hydrogels were then fabricated by the physical cross-linking of the self-assembled micelles. Utilizing the inclusion complexation between α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and PEO of the normal micelles of PNBL-b-PEO or polylysine-b-PEO, photo/pH-thermo-sensitive normal micellar hydrogels were fabricated; in contrast, the reverse micelles of polylysine-b-PEO@α-CD self-assembled at pH = 3 and then were transformed into a pH-thermo-sensitive reverse micellar hydrogel at pH = 10. The multiple self-assembly and hydrogel properties were thoroughly characterized by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), DLS, zeta potential, rheology, TEM, and SEM. Notably, these dual-sensitive polypeptide hydrogels with a higher mechanical modulus (10–105 kPa) were facilely constructed and the mechanical modulus can be further tuned by varying the UV-irradiation time, the amount of α-CD added, and the copolymer concentration. Consequently, this work provides a versatile platform for constructing polypeptide copolymer hydrogels with tunable mechanical and stimuli-sensitive properties.

This study reports the synthesis of a novel block copolymer, PEO-PFc-PCA, comprising cinnamic acid and ferrocene units via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP), and its application as a positive electrode material in pseudocapacitors. Ferrocene functions as redox-active sites for energy storage, while cinnamic acid, when crosslinked under UV light, forms a nano-network that reduces ferrocene leaching, thereby enhancing the stability and lifespan of the pseudocapacitors. Comprehensive structural characterization, including nuclear magnetic resonance and UV–visible spectroscopy, was conducted on PEO-PFc-PCA. Electrochemical tests—cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy—revealed that UV crosslinking improved the electrochemical performance, indicated by a slight increase in current and extended charging plateaus. Specific capacitance and energy density increased by 10 % post-crosslinking, demonstrating improved energy storage capacity. Nyquist plots showed reduced internal and charge transfer resistance after crosslinking, enhancing the electrochemical pathway. Stability tests indicated that crosslinked PEO-PFc-PCA retained 90.1 % of its capacitance after 3000 cycles, compared to 86.6 % pre-crosslinking, highlighting its superior longevity. This research presents a promising approach to enhancing pseudocapacitor energy storage through cinnamic acid photopolymerization, potentially benefiting broader pseudocapacitive electrode designs.

The unstable Na/electrolyte interface, plagued by Na dendrites and interface degradation, critically hinders solid-state Na batteries. We propose the design of thin poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based composite polymer electrolytes with a stabilized solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Incorporating SnF 2 into PEO and infusing the composite into an ultrathin polyethylene (PE) scaffold (PEO-xSnF 2 @PE) promotes a stable Na 15 Sn 4 /NaF-rich SEI that facilitates uniform Na⁺ deposition, while the PE layer ensures a thin yet mechanically robust structure. Consequently, the optimized composite polymer electrolyte, featuring an ultrathin 20 µm thickness, low areal density of 1.9 mg cm −2 , and ultrahigh tensile strength of 35 MPa, demonstrates exceptional dendrite-suppressing capability. Such synergistic effects enable Na symmetric cells employing PEO-4SnF 2 @PE to achieve ultralong cycling exceeding 10800 h (>1 year), alongside a critical current density of 1.0 mA cm −2 . Full cells paired with a Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode exhibit exceptional cycling stability, achieving 97.6% capacity retention over 500 cycles. This work demonstrates that combining SnF 2 functional additives with a flexible, high-strength supporting layer effectively mitigates interfacial instability and dendrite propagation in solid polymer electrolytes, offering new design principles for long-life solid-state sodium metal batteries.

Increasing the proportion of inorganic electrolytes in organic–inorganic composite electrolytes can significantly improve the ionic conductivity of composite electrolytes. However, this method is confronted with some problems, such as the uneven dispersion of inorganic electrolytes and the aggregation of nanoparticles, which results in a worse performance of the electrolytes’ interface. In this study, we had the dopamine hydrochloride molecules self-polymerized on the surface of inorganic ionic conductor lithium titanium aluminum phosphate (LATP) particles to obtain PDA-coated LATP nanoparticles. Then, the coated LATP particles were composited with PEO at a ratio of 80 : 20, with the LATP's evenly dispersed in the PEO, and no aggregation happened. On adding a small amount of electrolyte (5 μL cm−2, 1 M Li TFSI), the ionic conductivity of the electrospun PI-loaded PEO0.2–PDA@LATP0.8 flexible composite solid electrolyte reached 2.07 × 10−4 at 30 °C and 2.05 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C. NCM811‖Li batteries assembled with this electrolyte had an initial discharge capacity of 178.0 mA h g−1 at 30 °C, and still remained at 172.1 mA h g−1 (96.7%) after 200 cycles. The research shows that there are three main conduction pathways of Li+ in this electrolyte: through the segments of the polymer chains, through the interface between the polymer and inorganic ionic conductor, and through the passage composed of a continuous inorganic ionic conductor. Further results show that the coating of LATP by PDA does not block the transmission of Li+ both inside the crystal and at the crystal interface of LATP.

PEO-derived polymer electrolytes hold promise for economical, deformable lithium metal batteries with elevated energy density. Nevertheless, their deployment is constrained by insufficient Li + transport, restricted electrochemical stability, uncontrolled Li dendrite proliferation, and inferior anode cyclability. Herein, we introduce oxygen-deficient Nb 2 O 5 (Ov-Nb 2 O 5 ) into a polyethylene oxide host to fabricate an innovative solid-state electrolyte. The Ov-Nb 2 O 5 particles anchor PEO chains via Lewis acid−base interaction, forming a robust oxide−polymer interface. This interaction effectively prevents filler aggregation and reduces PEO crystallinity, yielding a homogeneous electrolyte membrane with enhanced mechanical strength. The resulting architecture accelerates Li + migration across the polymer, thereby elevating ionic transport and restraining dendrite advancement. The PEO/LiTFSI/10%Ov-Nb 2 O 5 electrolyte demonstrates a conductivity of 2.5 × 10 −4 S cm −1 alongside a Li + transference number of 0.63 at 60 ° C. Furthermore, Li-metal symmetric cells sustain steady deposition/dissolution exceeding 1500 h under 0.2 mA cm −2 . When paired with a LiFePO 4 cathode, the full cell achieves a reversible capacity of 121.4 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C and retains 91.7% of its capacity after 400 cycles. This investigation underscores an effective approach for engineering multifunctional fillers toward advanced solid electrolytes featuring rapid ion conduction and exceptional interfacial durability.
