A novel thiosemicarbazide modified adsorbent (PAN MW –TSC) based on polyacrylonitrile fiber was successfully synthesized under microwave irradiation, which was applied for the uptake of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution subsequently. Microwave irradiation method is a new approach to achieve the modification and it turns out that just a 30 min process is enough for the anchoring of functional groups in the fiber matrix. The surface characterization was performed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) elemental analysis (EA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), indicating that the modification was successfully accomplished. Batch adsorption experiments including equilibrium isotherms, kinetics and the effects of pH and temperature on the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) were systematically studied. Among three kinetic models, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provides the best correlation for the process. The nonlinear resolution of the Langmuir isotherm equation has been found to show the closest fit to the equilibrium date. Thermodynamic parameters, involving △ G , △ H and △ S were also calculated from graphical interpretation of the experimental data, which suggest that metal ions adsorption onto PAN MW –TSC fibers is spontaneous and exothermic. Regeneration of PAN MW –TSC fibers loaded with metal ions was efficiently done with 0.5 M HNO 3 , by which the investigated adsorbent could be used reproductively for five times with a small decrease in sorption capacity. The feasible preparation of PAN MW –TSC fibers with high adsorption capacities opens a new perspective in the potential application for wastewater treatment .

A novel pH-sensitive polystyrene (PS)-type resin was developed by grafting of poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PSPMA) brushes onto a cross-linked poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC) microsphere via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and was further utilized as a highly efficient and recyclable sorbent to remove Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The as-synthesized PSPMA-grafted PVBC microspheres were characterized by ATR-FTIR, XPS and SEM. Batch adsorption results revealed that the solution pH had an evident effect on the adsorption capacity of the PSPMA-grafted microspheres towards Pb(II) ions with an optimal sorption pH of above 5.0. The PSPMA-grafted microspheres had rapid adsorption kinetics of Pb(II) ions to reach adsorption equilibrium within 60 min. The Langmuir-fitted adsorption isotherms at pH 5.0 with an initial Pb(II) concentration range of 0.12–0.97 mmol L −1 (i.e. 50–200 mg L −1 ) revealed a maximum capacity of Pb(II) ions of 0.82 mmol g −1 . The calculated thermodynamic parameters demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Pb(II) ions on the PSPMA-grafted microspheres. With the inherent stability, high adsorption capacity and good regenerability, the PSPMA-grafted PVBC microsphere resin provides a novel promising PS-type adsorbent for effective removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution.

In this study, Xanthate-modified magnetic chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol) particles (XMMCP) were synthesized by momentary gelation method and characterized to evaluate its properties. The results of FTIR and XRD analysis indicated that most of basic characteristic peaks were weakened in the spectrum of XMMCP compared with the spectrum of pure chitosan, PVA, and Fe 3 O 4 and the diffraction intensity decreased owing to a decline in crystallinity, respectively. The BET surface area, total pore volume and magnetization saturation value of XMMCP were 15.52 m 2 /g, 0.048 cm 3 /g and 34.8 emu/g, respectively, which ensured enough contact of material surface with the metal ions present for adsorption. Based on SEM images, rough and uneven surface of adsorbent was benefited to adsorption performance of Pb(II). Furthermore, the resulting adsorbent showed stability below 150 °C and good magnetic properties. The resulting material was stable in deionized water, acidic, and basic media in 10 days. Continuous adsorption–desorption cyclic results demonstrated that XMMCP could effectively adsorb Pb 2+ and Pb 2+ -loaded XMMCP could be effectively regenerated by HCl solution. Meanwhile, regenerated composite particles could be employed for repeated use without significant capacity loss. Therefore, XMMCP can be a promising material to treat water with Pb 2+ .

Pb(II) removal from water is essential for human health due to their high toxicity and carcinogenicity. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential to remove heavy metal ions because of their adjustable structure and tunable pore size. However, the microporous structure limits their removal performance because Pb(II) mainly exists in water as hydrated ion, which is larger than the pore size of MOFs. Defect engineering is promising to form suitable pore to capture Pb(II). Herein, we developed an etched Cu 0.3 Zr 0.7 -MOF-808 MOF by a mixed-metal strategy followed with an etching process. We replaced part of Zr 4+ in the MOF-808 skeleton with Cu 2+ through competition between Zr 4+ /Cu 2+ for coordinating with –COOH on 1,3,5-Benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) to increase its specific surface area. Then H 3 PO 4 and EDTANa 2 ·2H 2 O as etchants were used to break the coordinate bond between Zr 4+ /Cu 2+ and –COOH on H 3 BTC to achieve macroporous structure to inhabit Pb(II). The powder property of MOFs limits their practical applications due to their poor recyclability. We crosslinked the MOF on CMC by coordinating Zr 4+ on the MOF with –COOH on CMC to form aerogel to facilitate its recyclability. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) was 542.77 mg/g at 45 °C. The adsorption of Pb(II) conformed to the intra-particle diffusion model and the Langmuir model, illustrating that the adsorption process was monolayer adsorption and affected by intra-particle diffusion. The electrostatic attraction and chelation between Pb(II) and –COOH accounted for the effective Pb(II) removal performance. This work provides a novel idea for the removal of heavy metal ions from water.

Green and high-performance biomass-based adsorbents have a good application prospect for the removal of heavy metals. At present, the preparation of chitosan/lignin biomass adsorbents mainly adopts dissolution-drying method, and the obtained adsorbents show relatively poor adsorption performance for heavy metals. To overcome this problem, a novel chitosan/lignin hydrogel (CSL) is prepared by a simple one-pot method through the Mannich reaction. Research findings show that the hydrogels present higher adsorption selectivity for Pb(II) and Cu(II) than other common heavy metals. Among them, the optimal hydrogel CSL1 shows unexpectedly ultrafast adsorption rate for Pb(II) and Cu(II) with equilibrium time of only 1 min and 2 min. Meanwhile, the maximum adsorption capacities of CSL1 for Pb(II) and Cu(II) are 139.86 and 98.71 mg·g −1 , respectively. Compared with the reported adsorption materials related to chitosan or lignin, the CSL1 has the advantages of simple preparation process, considerable adsorption capacity, and short adsorption equilibrium time. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism is investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results prove that the adsorption mechanism is chemical complexation. This work not only contributes to the advancement of hydrogel-based adsorbents, but also holds significant industrial potential for addressing water pollution issues and promoting sustainable development.

A novel, simple, and versatile electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform for Pb(II) ions was developed based on DNAzyme with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) with positive charge was adsorbed onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and then CdS quantum dots (QDs) with negative charge were enriched to the surface of GO by electrostatic interaction between CdS QDs and PDDA to prepare a composite (denoted as [email protected] ) which was immobilized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). When hydrogen peroxide was used as coreactant CdS QDs can produce ECL signal. G-rich DNA strand, i . e . T30695, can combine with Pb (II) ions to form a stable parallel G-quadruplex. The G-quadruplex can further combine with hemin to form DNAzyme which have catalysis towards the reduction of hydrogen peroxide causing the decrease of ECL signal. Amino-modified T30695 was attached to [email protected] composite by the reaction between the amino group of T30695 and carboxyl group of CdS QDs. The ECL signal of the biosensor was linearly dependent on the logarithm of Pb(II) concentration from 1.0 × 10 − 14 to 1.0 × 10 − 11 M with a detection limit of 9 fM. An excellent performance of ECL biosensor indicated that it is promising for Pb(II) detection in real samples.

In this work, an energy-efficient capacitive deionization (EACDI) system with energy-recovery and enhanced adsorption capacity was firstly built by using metallocene-doped MoS 2 /CNT (mFc@MoS 2 /CNT). The structures and morphologies of the porous materials including single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), MoS 2 /CNT and mFc@MoS 2 /CNT were investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectra and N 2 adsorption-desorption tests, and the performance of EACDI system on the removal of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were evaluated by electrosorption tests. The results suggest that this EACDI system shows higher adsorption capacity on the removal of heavy metal ions at the concentration level of mg/L, with respect to traditional capacitive deionization (CDI). Moreover, this new method shows good selectivity and high energy effectiveness on the separation of trace Pb 2+ with the adsorption efficiency of 96 % at 10 μg/L level and an energy consumption of 0.98 kJ/m 3 with 24.2 % energy recovery. As a result, this research reveals an advanced electrosorption method to purify the drinking water polluted by trace heavy metals with the advantage of low cost and high energy efficiency.

Wastewater containing heavy metals and organic dye pollutants discharged into receiving waters poses a serious environmental concern. Herein, a novel EDTA-chitosan/alginate porous composite bead adsorbent (EC–AB) was reported for the simultaneous removal of lead (Pb(II)) and methyl blue (MB) complexes from wastewater. Characterization results showed that EC–AB contained plenty of oxygen/nitrogen functional groups. The effect of CaCO3 addition, pH of the initial solution, contact time, initial pollutant concentration, and ionic strength on EC–AB pollutant removal performance and the adsorption mechanism were systematically analyzed. These findings indicated that EC–AB exhibited high removal efficiency over a wide pH range and at high ionic strength. The maximum adsorption capacities of EC–AB for Pb(II) and MB were 504.11 mg g−1 and 660.76 mg g−1, respectively, at 298 K. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies indicated that the adsorption well fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm. A possible adsorption mechanism involving electrostatic attraction, chelation, ion exchange, H-bonding and synergistic effects was proposed. Moreover, EC–AB showed superior stability and reusability, with removal efficiencies of 76.64% for Pb(II) and 80.29% for MB after five continuous adsorption–desorption cycles for treating complex wastewater. In summary, this work provides a beneficial strategy for designing high-performance adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater.

Chelating 1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acids were successfully introduced onto the cross-linked PGMA microsphere surfaces by the combination of ring-opening reactions and the click chemistry process between the alkynyl groups of propiolic acid (PA) and the epoxy groups on the surfaces of the PGMA microspheres. The resultant PA-conjugated PGMA microspheres were found to be an effective adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by ATR-FTIR, XPS and SEM characterization. Batch and column adsorption experiments were performed to determine the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics of Pb(II) ions on the as-synthesized microspheres. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) ions was found to be 69.41 mg g−1 at a solution pH of 5.0, together with the adsorption equilibrium being achieved within 60 min. The thermodynamic studies demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Pb(II) ions on the PA-conjugated PGMA microspheres. Column adsorption studies revealed the decrease in the adsorption capacities of the breakthrough and exhaustion points with increasing flow rate. The postulated adsorption mechanism was attributed to the electrostatic interactions from carboxylic groups and chelation or coordination of Pb(II) ions from the triazole moieties, which was facilitated to form a pluralistic potential trap for Pb(II) ions, as confirmed by XPS characterization.

To recover Gd from LiCl-KCl eutectic, the coreduction mechanism of Gd(III) with Pb(II) was investigated using electrochemical methods. The formation potentials related to the formation of three Gd-Pb intermetallics were detected by cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and chronopotentiometry, and the formation mechanism of Gd-Pb compounds could be described as xPb(II) + 2xe− = xPb. Meanwhile, the electroreduction of Gd on liquid Pb electrode was explored. The diffusion coefficient of Gd metal in liquid metallic Pb was determined by anodic chronopotentiometry. The kinetic parameters of Gd(III)/Gd(in Pb) couple in the temperature range from 723 K to 873 K were determined employing linear polarization (LP) method. Based on the relationship of exchange current density and temperature, the reaction activation energy was estimated to be 23.17 kJ mol−1. In addition, the recovery of Gd from molten salts was performed assisted by liquid Pb electrode by constant potential electrolysis (CPE) and constant current electrolysis (CCE). The products characterized using XRD, SEM with EDS are comprised of GdPb3 and Pb phases. The concentration change of Gd during CCE process was monitored by ICP-AES, and the recovery rate was estimated. The results showed that Gd concentration decreased and recovery rate increased with the duration.

Ternary amino-functionalized magnetic illite-smectite (AMNI/S) nanocomposites were prepared via integrating two-dimensional illite-smectite nanoflakes (NI/S), magnetite nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ), and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The results show that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles can be well dispersed on NI/S flakes and the hydrolyzed APTES molecules can simultaneously bond to the hydroxyl groups of Fe 3 O 4 and NI/S. Due to the synergetic effect, magnetic NI/S composite can graft more amount of APTES molecules rather than Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles or NI/S alone. When the mass ratio of NI/S:Fe 3 O 4 is 1:1, the saturation magnetization of AMNI/S-1 is 17.4 emu/g, facilitating the efficient magnetic separation in aqueous solution. Also, AMNI/S-1 shows a maximal adsorption amount of Pb(II) ions of 227.8 mg/g calculated by the Langmuir model. The effects of initial concentration of Pb(II) ions, pH value, adsorption time, and temperature on the adsorption amount of Pb(II) ions were investigated. The adsorption kinetic models and isotherm models were applied to analyze the adsorption of Pb(II) ions, respectively. The thermodynamic analysis reveals that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto AMNI/S-1 is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The mechanism for the adsorption of Pb(II) ions onto AMNI/S-1 is due to the surface complexation of Fe 3 O 4 and NI/S, and the chelation of amine groups (–NH 2 ). AMNI/S-1 can be efficiently reused and the regenerated AMNI/S-1 remains 82.91% of initial adsorption capacity after 6-cycle adsorption/desorption process. Thus, ternary AMNI/S-1 could be used as a prospective effective adsorbent.

A series of novel polyethyleneimine/graphene oxide (PEI@GO) membranes were prepared and their adsorptions for heavy metal ions in mixed solutions were examined. It was found that they had good sorption performances for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in water. Their adsorptions for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) obeyed the first-order kinetic modeling, dominating a physical style. Meanwhile, the fitting of intra-particle diffusion showed that Pb(II) and Cu(II) did not conform to the intra-particle diffusion stage, whereas Zn(II) did. Moreover, it was confirmed that the sorption of PEI@GO membranes for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) followed the Langmuir isotherm modeling, and the maximal values could reach 79.6 mg/g for Pb(II), 35.01 mg/g for Cu(II), and 32.27 mg/g for Zn(II), respectively. The calculation of thermodynamic parameters indicated that these adsorptions were spontaneous and endothermic processes. Further, the investigation of PEI@GO membranes for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in ternary mixed systems evidenced that Zn(II) can be preferentially removed via step-by-step mode. In addition, the exploration of sorption mechanism using XPS and FTIR analyses showed that ligand interactions were involved in the adsorptive removal of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II). This study discloses that PEI@GO membranes are promising adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions from water.
