Preparing methane-resistant Ru catalysts via moderate metal-support interactions for polyethylene hydrogenolysis

Yiwei Fang,Yundao Jing,Jinquan Ming,Wenjie Wang,Weixiao Sun,Xiaohu Ge,Wenyao Chen,Gang Qian,Yueqiang Cao,Xuezhi Duan,Xinggui Zhou,Jing Zhang

Polyethylene is the most abundant component of plastic waste. One dominant polyethylene recycling route is metal-catalyzed hydrogenolysis, since it operates at relatively low temperatures and favors formation of high-value liquid alkanes. Ru catalysts exhibit higher hydrogenolysis activity compared to Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ni. Nevertheless, this also brings a high tendency for terminal C–C scission to form low-value methane. Consequently, highly-selective Ru catalysts often require complex syntheses (e.g., site isolation, composite supports). Here, we report that methane-resistant Ru catalysts can be realized through simple, industrially-compatible impregnation via a moderate metal-support interaction. The choice of ZrO 2 strikes a balance: it promotes H 2 spillover to create an H 2 -rich surface beneficial for hydrocarbon fragment hydrogenation while avoiding excessive retention of the fragments that would favor undesirable overcracking. The resulting nano-sized Ru/ZrO 2 achieves 88.4% selectivity to liquids at full conversion—comparable to state-of-the-art systems—while being prepared by industrially-compatible impregnation.

Polarized Ru-HxWO3 Interface Drives Interfacial Water Restructuring for Accelerated Neutral Hydrogen Evolution

Hongfei You,Jin Zhang,Kuanchang He,Qian Liu,Sihao Lv,Min Zhang,Faliang Cheng,Fan Chen,Wei Li

The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in neutral media is fundamentally limited by sluggish water dissociation. Here we report a Ru single-atom catalyst supported on hydrogen tungsten bronze (Ru─H x WO 3 ) and show that its high activity originates from strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) at the Ru─O─W interface. The strong Ru-support coupling induces pronounced interfacial polarization, which restructures the local hydration layer and enriches activation-relevant interfacial water configurations for the Volmer step. As a result, Ru─H x WO 3 achieves an ultralow overpotential of 14 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , delivers a high Ru mass activity of 11.09 A mg Ru −1 at 100 mV, and sustains stable HER operation for 80 h at 1 A cm −2 in neutral media. This work elucidates a complete mechanistic pathway, demonstrating how strong Ru-support coupling leverages interfacial electronic modulation to dynamically control hydration-layer structure, thereby accelerating HER kinetics in neutral media.

Boosting selective room-temperature hydrogenation of furfural over carbon supported Ru-Sn catalyst

Zhao Yang,Bing Hui Chen

Introduction of Sn boosts selective C O hydrogenation of furfural. • Catalyst shows 99% yield of furfuryl alcohol without any external heat input. • Ru-SnO x interface fabricated by ethylene glycol method enhances activity. • Constructed metal-support interaction strengthens the reusability. Catalytic hydrogenation of C O is critical for converting biomass-derived platform molecules to value-added chemicals. However, how to strike a balance for the catalysis between high efficiency and green production remains a challenge. In this work, carbon supported Ru-Sn catalyst showed excellent room-temperature performance in furfural hydrogenation, > 99% furfural conversion with > 99% product selectivity to furfuryl alcohol can be achieved without external heating source. The solvent was found to play an important role in catalytic performance. Compared with Ru/C, introduction of Sn markedly enhanced the catalytic performance. The introduced Sn behaves as the electrophilic C O activation sites in catalysis, a synergy between Ru and Sn enhances the activity. Ru-Su/C synthesized via ethylene glycol (E-G) method showed a higher activity than that synthesized by hydrazine hydrate (H-H) method, whereas the latter exhibited a better reusability than the former. Ru-SnO x interface fabricated by E-G method boosts the catalytic activity, whereas the strong anchoring effect of the support in Ru-Sn/C (H-H) strengthens the catalytic reusability. This study revealed a practical way to regulate the Ru-Sn sites configuration of Ru-Sn/C used in efficient furfural hydrogenation at room-temperature. Defect-anchored Ru clusters enable accelerated water dissociation for diversified carbon-source reforming

Wenyang Li,Chaonan Cui,Haijiao Lu,Shuo Li,Huili Zhang,Zhou-jun Wang,Yunming Fang

Anchoring Ru clusters (1.9 nm) onto N-terminated defects of h-BNNS via EMSI strategy • The surface EMSI environment in Ru/h-BNNS facilitates water adsorption/dissociation. • Ru/h-BNNS is efficient in “Diversified Carbon-Source Steam Reforming to Hydrogen”. • Record-high H 2 yield achieved from C 1 (CO/CH 3 OH) and C 2+ (C 2 H 5 OH/C 12 H 26 ) feedstocks Efficient water activation remains a pivotal challenge‌ in ‌the steam reforming‌ of ‌diverse carbon sources‌. This study addresses the limitation by ‌anchoring Ru clusters‌ on ‌N-terminated defects‌ of ‌hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNS)‌, leveraging ‌electronic metal–support interaction (EMSI)‌ to stabilize ‌highly dispersed, electron-deficient Ru sites‌. The resulting ‌Ru/h-BNNS catalyst‌ achieved ‌up to 100% conversion‌ of ‌C 1 feeds (CO, CH 3 OH)‌ at ‌250–300 °C‌ and ‌complete conversion‌ of ‌C 2+ feeds (ethanol, isododecane)‌ at ‌550–600 °C‌, delivering ‌high H 2 yield‌ and ‌long-term stability‌ that are highly competitive with representative noble-metal catalysts‌. In-situ spectroscopy‌ and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that ‌defect-induced electronic modulation‌ accelerated ‌H 2 O dissociation‌ and strengthened ‌Ru O binding‌, thereby ‌lowering water activation barriers‌ and ‌suppressing metal sintering‌. These attributes establish a ‌“Diversified Carbon-Source Steam Reforming to Hydrogen” strategy (C x TH, x refers to CO, methanol, ethanol, and hydrocarbons)‌, which aligns with the Green Carbon Science framework by enabling efficient H 2 production with high catalytic activity and enhanced Ru atom utilization. The adaptable effect of Ru on hydrogen sorption characteristics of the MgH2 system

Darvaish Khan,Jianxin Zou,Saz Muhammad,Niaz Ali Khan,Shah Saud,Subrata Panda

In this study, a MgH 2 –Ru composite is prepared by mechanical ball milling of MgH 2 and Ru powders. The microstructural analysis revealed the uniform distribution of Ru nanoparticles in the MgH 2 matrix and the formation of intermetallic compounds (i.e. Mg 6.2 Ru and Mg 1.5 Ru) after dehydrogenation of the composite. The substantial improvements in the de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 are due to the adjustable catalytic role of Ru under low temperature and pressure conditions. MgH 2 –Ru composite started to release hydrogen at an onset temperature of 300 °C, much lower than the mechanically milled pure MgH 2 (350 °C). Hydrogen absorption of the MgH 2 –Ru composite is relatively fast at 350 °C and stored 6.1 wt% in 5 min. At the same temperature, the hydrogenated MgH 2 –Ru composite released all stored hydrogen in less than 5 min. Compared with the catalyst-free MgH 2 , the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activation energies of the MgH 2 –Ru composite are reduced to 65.12 ± 2.4 kJ/mol H 2 , and 97.46 ± 4.15 kJ/mol H 2 , respectively. In addition, it further demonstrated how the reversible transformation of Mg–Ru intermetallic phases induces the thermodynamic destabilization of the MgH 2 system. The presence of Ru not only facilitated the breaking of the Mg–H bond but also provided very good catalytic interfaces for enhanced de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 .

Single atomic Ru in TiO2 boost efficient electrocatalytic water oxidation to hydrogen peroxide

Zhaolei Wang,Wenhai Xu,Guoying Tan,Xinxuan Duan,Bichen Yuan,Marshet Getaye Sendeku,Hai Liu,Tianshui Li,Fengmei Wang,Yun Kuang,Xiaoming Sun

Electrocatalytic two-electron water oxidation affords a promising approach for distributed production of H 2 O 2 using electricity. However, it suffers from the trade-off between the selectivity and high production rate of H 2 O 2 due to the lack of suitable electrocatalysts . In this study, single atoms of Ru were controllably introduced into titanium dioxide to produce H 2 O 2 through an electrocatalytic two-electron water oxidation reaction. The adsorption energy values of OH intermediates could be tuned by introducing Ru single atoms , offering superior H 2 O 2 production under high current density . Notably, a Faradaic efficiency of 62.8% with an H 2 O 2 production rate of 24.2 μmol min −1 cm −2 (>400 ppm within 10 min) was achieved at a current density of 120 mA cm −2 . Consequently, herein, the possibility of high-yield H 2 O 2 production under high current density was demonstrated and the importance of regulating intermediate adsorption during electrocatalysis was evidenced.

The Promotional Effect of Na on Ru for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Bingxin Guo,Chengfei Zhao,Yingshuang Zhou,Junjie Guo,Zhongzhe Wei,Jing Wang

Alkali metals, as ideal electron donors, can effectively regulate the valence state distribution of the host metals. Nevertheless, no studies have reported the application of alkali metal promoters in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we designed an efficient and wide pH-universal hydrogen evolution catalyst that utilizes alkali metal to control the valence, size, and dispersion of Ru NPs. The experimental results reveal that the alkali metal additives contribute to the dispersion and stabilization of metallic Ru. More importantly, the interaction between Na and Ru regulates the distribution of Ru valence states and helps to form more active components of Ru0. Additionally, NaCl functioned as an in situ template to assist the construction of a porous carbon skeleton promotes mass transfer and exposes more active sites, further promoting the synergistic effect of Ru and Na. As a result, the optimal Ru0.3/C−800 delivers high efficiency for HER with an overpotential as low as 29 mV in 1.0 M KOH and 83 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4under 10 mA cm−2. Particularly, the catalytic performance of Ru0.3/C−800 even outbalanced that of commercial Pt/C in an alkaline medium. This rational construction strategy opens up new avenues for obtaining superior pH-universal electrocatalysts. Keywords:alkali metal;Ru based;hydrogen evolution reaction;wide-range pH;promotional effect

Hydrogenation of dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate to dimethyl tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dicarboxylate over Ru/HY

Li Chengfeng,Lyu Qishen,Li Zheng,Yang Shuliang,Sun Yong,Tang Xing,Zeng Xianhai,Lin Lu

The hydrogenation of biomass-based furan compounds is an important step for the catalytic valorization of biobased chemicals. In this work, Ru-based catalysts supported on different supports, such as HY, MgO and Amberlyst-15, were prepared and estimated for the hydrogenation of dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (FDMC). Among them, Ru/HY provided a desirable yield of 99.4% for tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (THFDMC) under 90 °C and 3 MPa H 2 . Based on catalyst characterization, Ru/HY could offer more surface Ru 0 species and carbon radical intermediates than other catalysts, which could largely favor the activation of hydrogen and then promote the hydrogenation of FDMC over Ru/HY.

Activable Ru-PdRu nanosheets with heterogeneous interface for High-efficiency alcohol oxidation reaction

Yuefan Zhang,Jie Li,Cheng Wang,Dongmei Liu,Rui Yu,Changqing Ye,Yukou Du

Fabricating 2D nanomaterials with heterogeneous structure is a feasible way to improve catalytic performance owing to its large surface area and tunable electron structure. However, such a category has not been widely reported in the field of alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR). In this work, we reported a new type of heterostructure nanosheet with Ru nanoparticles decorated around the edge of PdRu nanosheets (Ru-PdRu HNSs). Particularly, strong electronic interaction and sufficient active sites attributed to the construction of heterogeneous interface, is the key to the superior electrocatalytic behavior of Ru-PdRu HNSs towards methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR), and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). Remarkably, owing to the enhanced electron transfer brought by the introduction of the Ru-PdRu heterogeneous interface, these novel nanosheets are highly durable. Apart from being able to maintain the highest current density after 4000 s chronoamperometry test, Ru-PdRu HNSs can be reactivated with negligible activity loss in MOR and GOR test after four consecutive i-t experiments. Impressively, in the EGOR test, after reactivation, the current density is step-wisely increased, making it one of the best AOR electrocatalysts.

High-Performance Li-CO2 Battery Based on Carbon-Free Porous Ru@QNFs Cathode

Ting Zhu,Sheng Wang,Zhiqian Yu,Hucheng Song,Jun Xu,Kunji Chen

Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO 2 ) batteries have attracted much attention due to their high theoretical energy density. However, due to the existance of lithium carbonate and amorphous carbon in the discharge products that are difficult to decompose, the battery shows low coulombic efficiency and poor cycle performance. Here, by adjusting the adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on ruthenium (Ru) catalysts surface, this work reports an ultralow charge overpotential and long cycle life Li-CO 2 battery that consists of typical lithium metal, ternary molten salt electrolyte (TMSE), and Ru-based cathode. Experimental results show that the Ru catalysts deposited on quartz nanofiber (QF) can suppress the four-electron conversion of CO 2 to lithium carbonate (Li 2 CO 3 ). As a result, the battery shows a long-cycle-life of over 457 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g −1 Ru . Remarkably, a recorded low discharge potential of ≈3.0 V has been achieved after 35 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , with a charge potential retention of over 99%. Moreover, the battery can operate over 25 A g −1 and recover 96% potential. This battery technology paves the way for designing high-performance rechargeable Li-CO 2 batteries with carbon neutrality.

Ru/La2S3 nanorods as an electrocatalyst for efficient N2 fixation under ambient conditions

Wang Yingshu,Wang Hong,Tang Yixin,Shu Yu,Zhao Suying,Hong Lu,Xu Zhenqi

Electrochemical ammonia synthesis has advantages over the conventional Haber–Bosch process in terms of environment friendliness, sustainability, and cleanliness. However, this process is facing challenges such as low ammonia yield and low Faraday efficiency due to the low solubility and the difficulty in activation of nitrogen in aqueous solutions. To overcome these limitations, finding a catalyst of high efficiency, stability, and selectivity is crucial. Inspired by the concept of noble metal doping and two-dimensional layered catalysts, we have designed a novel catalyst for nitrogen reduction by incorporating ruthenium into lanthanum sulfide. In this context, the inclusion of ruthenium serves to optimize the electron transfer interface, enhance the low conductivity of lanthanum sulfide, and increase the number of active sites. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between the ruthenium and lanthanum ions significantly improves the activity of the catalyst. As a catalyst for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR), Ru/La2S3 demonstrates a superior NH3 formation rate of 19.40 μg h−1 mgcat−1 and a faradaic efficiency of 7.77% at −0.5 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). These values are significantly higher compared to those of La2O3 (1.4%; 12.5 μg h−1 mgcat−1) and La2S3 (2.3%; 10.7 μg h−1 mgcat−1), and most reported values in this field.

Colloid carbonization-stabilized Ru nanoparticle catalyst for efficient ammonia synthesis at mild conditions

Xuanbei Peng,Kailin Su,Hongpeng Fang,Qianjin Sai,Jun Ni,Haifeng Qi,Yanliang Zhou,Lirong Zheng,Jianxin Lin,Lilong Jiang,Xiuyun Wang

Ruthenium-based catalysts are widely used in ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis because of a high affinity for N 2 activation, while confronting the challenge of facile deactivation due to sintering. Herein, for the first time, we develop a highly active and sintering-resistant Ru2.1-CC catalyst via colloid carbonization (CC) for NH 3 synthesis. It exhibits a superior NH 3 synthesis rate around 9.4-fold that of Ru catalyst synthesized by impregnation method, displaying extremely high stability without aggregation of Ru nanoparticle after 100 h stability test. Our studies show that Ru2.1-CC possesses the average Ru particle size of 2.1 nm with narrow size distribution and thus exposes more active sites for N 2 activation. Moreover, the formation of Ru-C interaction via colloid carbonization over Ru2.1-CC can stabilize Ru particle size to realize high stability, meanwhile reduce work function and upshift the d-band center of Ru metal to accelerate its electron transfer for N 2 activation and NH 3 synthesis. This study provides a new strategy for simple synthesis of noble metal-based catalysts that are highly active and stable for NH 3 synthesis.
