Multicomponent assembly of luminescent hybrid materials of ZnO-lanthanide polymer complex functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous host by chemical bonds

Yan-Fei Shao,Bing Yan,Zhao-Yan Jiang

In this paper, methacrylic-group-modified ZnO nanoparticles (designated ZnO-MAA) are prepared through the sol–gel reaction between zinc methacrylate and LiOH, which is then functionalized with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) to form the ZnO-MAA-PHEMA hybrid system after addition polymerization reaction. Then ZnO-MAA-PHEMA unit is modified with 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl isocyanate (TEPIC) through the addition reaction and subsequently to achieve the functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous hybrids (ZnO-MAA-PHEMA-SBA-15) by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and modified polymer ligand (HEMASi) in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as template. Finally, lanthanide (Eu3+, Tb3+, Nd3+) complex systems with β-diketonates (2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (TTA), 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionate (DBM), 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate (BTA) and nicotinate (NTA)) are introduced to obtain multicomponent organic–inorganic hybrid materials through the coordination bonds between the lanthanide ion and the carbonyl group of ZnO-MAA-PHEMA-SBA-15. The detailed physical characterization and especially the photoluminescence of these hybrid materials are studied in detail. The results provide a strategy to assemble luminescent lanthanide hybrids with multicomponent units such as semiconductors, polymers and mesoporous silica and lanthanide complexes.

Optimized Fabrication of Ni–Mo/USY@SBA-15 Core–Shell Catalysts via Acid-Tailored Synthesis for Enhanced Naphthalene Hydrocracking

Jinna Liu,Yi Wang,Yang Li,Peiliang Sun,Zhichao Sun,Ying-Ya Liu,Chong Peng

Encapsulating the USY zeolite within a mesoporous SBA-15 shell is a promising strategy to construct hierarchical catalysts with regulated acidity. However, the acidic conditions required for SBA-15 synthesis pose a stability challenge to the acid-sensitive USY core. In this work, we first systematically investigated the physicochemical evolution of USY under simulated SBA-15 synthesis conditions by varying the acid concentration, temperature, and treatment time. Through XRD, N2 physisorption, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR analysis, the optimal conditions for USY to retain its framework integrity and Brønsted acidity were determined to be ≤1.0 M HCl and treatment time ≤24 h. This acid-tailored optimization is essential for the subsequent fabrication of the core–shell structure. Guided by these findings, the Ni–Mo/USY@SBA-15 core–shell catalyst is successfully prepared and evaluated in naphthalene hydrocracking, achieving 97.8% conversion and 51.6% BTX selectivity, outperforming conventional Ni–Mo/USY (92.6% conversion and 26.0% BTX selectivity). XPS analysis provides direct evidence of the spatially regulated metal-acid distribution and enhanced electron density on active sites. The performance enhancement is attributed to the hierarchical pore structure and the spatially regulated metal-acid distribution, which together enhance mass transfer, optimize acid site accessibility, and suppress overcracking. This study provides an acid-tolerance-guided synthesis strategy for designing high-performance core–shell zeolite catalysts.

Rational Design of Mesoporous Silica (SBA-15)/PF (Phenolic Resin) Nanocomposites by Tuning the Pore Sizes of Mesoporous Silica

Hongxia Liu,Yijia Lao,Jiayi Wang,Junjie Jiang,Chuanbai Yu,Yuanli Liu

The development of composite materials with functional additives proved to be an effective way to improve or supplement the required properties of polymers. Herein, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with different pore sizes were used as functional additives to prepare SBA-15/PF (phenolic resin) nanocomposites, which were prepared by in situ polymerization and then, compression molding. The physical properties and structural parameters of SBA-15 with different pore sizes were characterized by N2adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal properties of the SBA-15/PF hybrid were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical, friction, and dynamic mechanical properties of SBA-15/PF nanocomposites were also studied. The results revealed that the pore sizes of SBA-15 have a significant effect on the resulting SBA-15/PF hybrid and SBA-15/PF nanocomposites. The thermal stability of the SBA-15/PF hybrid was dramatically improved in comparison with pure PF. The friction and dynamic mechanical properties of the SBA-15/PF nanocomposites were enhanced significantly. Specifically, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposite increased by 19.0 °C for the SBA-15/PF nanocomposites modified with SBA-15-3. In addition, the nanocomposite exhibited a more stable friction coefficient and a lower wear rate at a high temperature. The enhancement in thermal and frictional properties for the nanocomposites is ascribed to the confinement of the PF chains or chain segments in the mesopores channels.Keywords:SBA-15/PF;nanocomposites;pore expanding;thermal properties;frictional properties

Enhancing the stability of a cobalt-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis catalyst using g-C3N4-coated SBA-15 as support

Yanxi Zhao,Shiyan Huang,Chengchao Liu,Yuhua Zhang,Longsheng Wang,Aihua lin,Jinlin Li

Background The design and synthesis of catalysts with high stability, activity and selectivity in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) have been attracting extensive research attention. Maintaining high catalytic stability and activity is the best strategy for improving the catalyst efficiency and economic benefits. Methods In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 )-coated SBA-15 was utilised as a support material to prepare cobalt-based FTS catalysts. The catalysts coated with g-C 3 N 4 were studied via TEM, XPS, XRD, H 2 -TPR, TG, N 2 adsorption–desorption, and tested in a fixed-bed reactor. Significant findings The catalysts coated with g-C 3 N 4 were considerably more stable than the Co/SBA-15 catalyst without g-C 3 N 4 coating during a 100 h test period. Furthermore, the CO-conversion performance of the Co/SBA-15 catalyst decreased continuously. Notably, the activity of the Co/ [email protected] 3 N 4 catalyst with a low g-C 3 N 4 loading was higher than that of the Co/SBA-15@1C 3 N 4 catalyst with a relatively high g-C 3 N 4 loading. g-C 3 N 4 can significantly strengthen the interaction between the cobalt species and the support, thereby increasing the catalyst stability. Therefore, a highly stable catalyst with good activity can be achieved by employing a small amount of g-C 3 N 4 for surface modification. The results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for preparing highly stable, cobalt-based catalysts with good activity.

Ru Nanoparticles on a Sulfonated Carbon Layer Coated SBA-15 for Catalytic Hydrogenation of Furfural into 1, 4-pentanediol

Cui Kai,Qian Wei,Shao Zhengjiang,Zhao Xiuge,Gong Honghui,Wei Xinjia,Wang Jiajia,Chen Manyu,Cao Xiaoming,Hou Zhenshan

Furfural (FFR) is one of the most important biomass-derived chemicals. Its large-scale availability calls for the exploration of new transformation methods for further valorization. Herein, we demonstrate that Ru nanoparticles (Ru NPs)-supported on a sulfonated carbon layer coated SBA-15 can be employed as an efficient bi-functional catalyst for one step conversion of FFR into 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PeDO). The optimum bi-functional catalyst can afford the full the conversion of FFR and 86% selectivity to 1,4-PeDO. The catalysts have been characterized thoroughly by using a complementary combination of powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization revealed that acidic groups (–SO 3 H) have been introduced on the surface of the carbon layer coated SBA-15 support after sulfonation with 98% H 2 SO 4 and the surface acidity can be tuned facilely by the sulfonating time. Meantime, Ru(0) sites was highly dispersed via an impregnation and sequential reduction and directly adjacent to the surface –SO 3 H group. There existed an electronic interaction between Ru(0) sites and sulfonic groups, in which the electronic transfer from sulfonic sites to Ru(0) sites occurred. Brönsted acid sites (–SO 3 H) have a significant influence on the FFR conversion and the selectivity to 1,4-PeDO. The ordered mesoporous structure, the appropriate density of acid sites and the electron-rich Ru(0) sites accounted for the the excellent performance of the catalyst for an efficient production of 1,4-PeDO from FFR. Three-dimensional Co–N/SBA-15/alginate hydrogels with excellent recovery and recyclability for activating peroxymonosulfate to degrade ciprofloxacin

Yanan Qin,Junmei Luo,Qingda An,Zuoyi Xiao,Jingai Hao,Yao Tong,Shangru Zhai

A facile and environmentally friendly method to synthesize efficient catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade contaminants is highly important yet remains challenging. By combining the superiorities of ordered Co/N@ZS and alginate hydrogels, namely regular and stable channels, large specific surface area, outstanding hydrophilicity and unique three-dimensional structure, an excellent recovery and recyclability catalyst, Co 0·6 /N@ZS-SA, exhibited outstanding performance in activating 0.50 g/L PMS for ciprofloxacin degradation (20 mg/L) with a high degradation rate of 82.52%. The effect of diversified influencing parameters, stability and recyclability on the degradation efficiency was systematically investigated. More importantly, the composite hydrogel with excellent recovery and recyclability could still degrade more than 63.4% CIP after three consecutive reactions. In addition, combined EPR analysis and ROS quenching research indicated that HO • , SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 were generated but CIP degradation dominated by the radical mechanism comprising the yield of SO 4 •− . Besides, the intermediate products were identified by LC-MS analyses to propose the possible degradation pathways.

Highly efficient adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution using amino-functionalized SBA-15/calcium alginate microspheres as adsorbent

Yongcun Song,Li-Ye Yang,Yang-guang Wang,Di Yu,Jiafeng Shen,Xiao-kun Ouyang

In this work, amino-functionalized Santa Barbara Amorphous-15/calcium alginate (ASBA-15@CA) microspheres were fabricated and characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, TGA , and XPS analyses. The Pb(II) adsorption properties of the ASBA-15@CA microspheres were studied in terms of the effects of the adsorption time, adsorbent dose, solution pH, temperature, and initial concentration of Pb(II) on the adsorption capacity. At pH 6 and 298 K, the adsorption reached equilibrium after 100 min and the sample exhibited a good adsorption effect, affording a maximum adsorption capacity of 1029.58 mg/g and a removal rate as high as 98.99%. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir model ( R 2  = 0.9937) and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model ( R 2  = 0.9995). Regeneration experiments showed that the removal rate of the sample reached 75% even after 6 cycles. Overall, this study provides new insights into the development of novel, highly efficient, and repeatable degradation materials for the removal of Pb(II).

Optimizing CO2 Hydrogenation to DME through Tailored Interfacial Interactions: Weakening Synergy in CuZnZr and Al-Modified SBA-15 Catalysts

Chi Sun,Yudong Xia,Xue Ye,Wenlin Xu,Hui Shi,Xinhua Gao,Jinghao Yu,Lisheng Guo,Jie Li

The direct dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis reaction via CO2 hydrogenation typically requires a bifunctional catalyst that effectively combines a methanol synthesis catalyst with a methanol dehydration catalyst, but the effect of the relationship between the two catalysts on the catalytic performance has not been as well studied. In this study, we developed a CuZnZr/Al–S(10)-PG bifunctional catalyst physically mixed with Al-modified SBA-15 and the traditional CuZnZr catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to DME. A pivotal discovery is that the modulation of interaction intensity between these two constituents significantly influences the electronic configuration of each component. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization and methanol dehydration experiments, it was confirmed that diminishing the synergistic interplay between CuZnZr and Al-modified SBA-15, which regulated the electronic structure of the Cu–Zn interface and enhanced the Cu–Zn interfacial interaction, played a crucial role in enhancing the catalyst’s performance in CO2 hydrogenation to DME. This finding contests established beliefs about the necessity of strong synergistic interactions in such systems and provides new insights for designing rational bifunctional catalysts.

Organic phosphonic acid modified SBA-15 assisted enhanced high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance of polybenzimidazole membranes

Taipu Chen,Lei Chen,Yutong Zhao,Jinkai Hao,Zhigang Shao

To tackle the challenges of phosphoric acid (PA) leakage and suboptimal proton transfer efficiency in PA-polybenzimidazole (PBI) high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HTPEMs), this research has pioneered the development of a novel porous silicon material, DP/S15, which has been tailored through organic phosphonic acid modification. S15 or DP/S15 was utilized to fabricate PBI composite membranes and subjected these membranes to a thorough examination of their properties. The integration of DP/S15 into the membrane matrix notably enhanced acid uptake and facilitated the formation of a robust and extensive proton transportation network. This was largely attributable to the synergistic interaction between the organic phosphonic acid groups in DP/S15 and PA. As a result, the membranes incorporating DP/S15 exhibited a host of commendable properties, most notably their substantial mechanical strength , which registered at 89.80 MPa with undoped PA and 13.10 MPa with doped PA. Furthermore, theoretical analyses lent credence to the efficient adsorption between DP/S15 and phosphoric acid. Consequently, the composite membranes delivered superior performance metrics, evident in their high conductivity (reaching 57.7 mS cm −1 at 160 °C) and excellent PA retention capabilities (up to 89.5 %). Of paramount significance was the performance of the single fuel cell equipped with the PA-DP/S15-PBI composite membrane, which achieved a peak power density of 672.29 mW cm −2 . This figure impressively surpassed that of the pure PBI membrane by 262.23 mW cm −2 . In light of these promising outcomes, the PA-DP/S15-PBI composite membrane harbors significant potential for deployment in HT-PEMFCs.

Ternary europium mesoporous polymeric hybrid materials Eu(β-diketonate)3pvpd-SBA-15(16): host–guest construction, characterization and photoluminescence

Yan-Jing Gu,Bing Yan,Yan-Yan Li

Novel organic–inorganic mesoporous luminescent polymeric hybrid materials containing europium(III) complexes incorporated to mesoporous silica SBA-15/SBA-16 have been prepared by simple physical doping (impregnation) methods, followed by the addition polymerization reaction of the monomer 4-vinylpyridine (vpd) extending along the mesoporous channels. The precursor europium(III) complexes are synthesized by β-diketonate (β-diketonate=2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (tta), hexafluoroacetylacetonate (hfac), trifluoroacetylacetonate (taa)) and monomer 4-vinylpyridine (vpd) coordinated to Eu 3+ , and SBA-15/SBA-16 are obtained via a sol–gel process. After the physical doping and the polymerization reaction , the final ternary materials Eu(β-diketonate) 3 pvpd-SBA-15/Eu(β-diketonate) 3 pvpd-SBA-16 (β-diketonate=tta, hfac, taa) are received. The physical properties and espeically the photoluminescence of these hybrids are characterized, and the XRD and BET results reveal that all of these hybrid materials have uniformity in the mesostructure. The detailed luminescence investigation on all the materials show that Eu(tta) 3 pvpd-SBA-16 have the highest luminescence intensity and the materials with taa ligands have longer lifetimes.

Sn@SBA-15 with temperature responsive acid-base dual functional sites for catalyzing biomass-derived sugars to ethyl lactate

Yifan Liu,Jiangang Wang,Yuhan Liu,Yuan Zhang,Hongzi Tan,Hongyou Cui

Herein, a series of Sn-based catalysts supported on SBA-15 with temperature responsive ability to in situ construct acidic and basic sites are reported for efficient conversion of biomass-derived sugars into ethyl lactate (EL). Based on the investigation on the effects of the molar ratio of Cl/OH in Sn(OH) x Cl 2-x and the support types, it is found that Sn(OH) 0.5 Cl 1.5 @SBA-15 is an excellent catalyst in catalytic conversion of various sugars to EL, achieving a maximum EL yield of 68.1 % from sucrose. The in situ generated basic SnO sites play important roles in accelerating the retro-aldol condensation reaction, while the concomitantly released acidic sites (Sn 2 + , SnCl + and H + ) could catalyze the reactions of hydrolysis, isomerization, intermolecular rearrangement and esterification to EL. Benefiting from the temperature responsive effect, not only can the reaction pathways be regulated toward high EL selectivity, but also the catalyst can be recycled easily. This research paves an avenue for exploring efficient catalysts for biomass valorization.
