Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for contamination analysis of Sr and Cs on 316L stainless steels in alkaline environment for spent nuclear fuel storage

Yupeng Xie,Jie Wang,Yaocheng Hu,Jing Zhang,Yong Gao,Haipeng Li,Sheng Wang

The contamination of fission products ( 90 Sr and 137 Cs) on the metallic material (316L stainless steel) of alkaline spent fuel storage pond threatens to decommission nuclear facilities. Compared with previous studies unable to detect Cs on the surface of contaminated steel by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), this study selected the emission lines of Sr II 407.74 nm and Cs I 455.77 nm as the analytical spectral lines of LIBS, and for the first time satisfactorily measured and analyzed the accumulation of Sr and Cs on the surface of 316L stainless steel for 7, 14, 21, 30 and 60 days, respectively. It was found during the accumulation, the concentration of Sr and Cs on the surface reached their maximum after 21 days, and relatively stabilized 30 days later. In addition, combined with the physicochemical characterizations, the contamination mechanism of Sr and Cs on 316L stainless steel was proposed, with the contaminants gradually diffusing from the oxide layer dissolved and damaged in the alkaline corrosive environment to the matrix. Strontium had two forms on the steel surface: SrCrO 4 in the oxide layer and SrCO 3 in the matrix, but the contamination of Cs was more inclined to the surface than Sr.

Plasma-assisted coating mitigates degradation of (Sr,Ca)AlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphors under thermal‐moisture‐sulfur condition: from synergistic aging mechanisms to protective strategies

Changran Zheng,Zhoudong Yang,Baotong Guo,Hanqing Dai,Tianhe Lu,Xi Zhu,Huimin Xu,Bobo Yang,Jun Zou,Sergey Lishik,Jiajie Fan

(Sr, Ca)AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ (SCASN) phosphors are widely used in white LEDs due to their excellent red spectral performance. However, exposure to high temperature, high humidity, and sulfur-containing environments significantly degrades their performance and long-term stability. Herein, a rapid plasma-assisted deposition technique is employed to apply an ultrathin Si-based nanolayer onto SCASN (SCASN-Coated), enhancing its durability under such harsh conditions. Accelerated aging tests conducted at 100 °C, 100 % relative humidity (RH), and in a sulfur-containing atmosphere reveal that unmodified SCASN retains only 24.1 % of its initial luminous intensity after 1008 h, whereas the SCASN-Coated preserves approximately 41.2 % of their original brightness without compromising intrinsic luminescent properties. First-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations further elucidate that SCASN has a strong chemical adsorption effect on SO 2 (−3.056  eV). And the combined presence of SO 2 and H 2 O promotes the displacement of Ca 2+ ions, accelerating degradation. The protective SiO 2 nanolayer drastically reduces the SO 2 adsorption energy (−0.124  eV) and inhibits Ca 2+ ion migration. This surface protection strategy not only augments the resilience of SCASN phosphors under extreme conditions but also provides research paradigm into the degradation mechanisms, thereby offering new avenues for extending the service life of LED devices in challenging environments.

Halting Mitochondrial Domino Effect in Acute Liver Injury: Polyphenol-Sr Nanodrugs Attenuate Cell Death and Sterile Inflammation by Combating ROS Burst and Calcium Overload

Min Liu,Shuya Wang,Ruishi Li,Weimin Qi,Tingli Xiong,Xiaojing Shi,Wensheng Chen,Feixiang Ding,Chenglong Wei,Junyan Liu,Niansheng Li,Qiong Huang,Zhaoqian Liu,Kelong Ai

Acute liver injury (ALI) is a significant clinical cause of liver failure, potentially occurring at any stage of liver disease and posing a considerable health burden. One prevalent model of ALI stems from acetaminophen (APAP) overdose, where a vicious cycle of “mitochondrial damage-inflammation amplification” and limited availability of small molecular drugs hinder current therapeutic approaches. Herein, a novel tannic acid (TA)-strontium (Sr) nanodrug (SrTA) is proposed. With liver-accumulating and mitochondria-targeting capabilities, SrTA effectively harnesses the broad-spectrum antioxidant properties of TA along with the calcium homeostasis-regulating function of Sr 2+ . And its therapeutic efficacy surpassed that of an equivalent dose of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Mechanistically, SrTA directly scavenges mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), protects mitochondrial integrity, and alleviates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and intracellular oxidative damage. Additionally, SrTA antagonizes calcium signaling, reduces the formation of mitochondria-ER contacts, and inhibits mitochondrial calcium overload. By safeguarding mitochondrial function and preventing the aberrant opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), SrTA significantly curtail hepatocyte death and mitigates mtDNA-induced sterile inflammation, effectively halting the injury cascade. In conclusion, this study presents a novel therapeutic strategy for ALI that targets mitochondria and synergistically regulates ROS bursts and calcium overload, achieving multifaceted therapeutic effects.

Yujiang Gou,Xinglan Fu,Long Huang,Jian Zhang,Chongshan Yang,Changbo Song,Shixiang Ma,Chunjiang Zhao,Guanglin Li

AuAgNCs-NFM is used for the efficient enrichment of HMs in soil. • The detection sensitivity and accuracy for Cs, Sr, and Co are enhanced. • The LODs for Cs, Sr, and Co reach 0.078, 0.085, and 0.16 mg/kg, respectively. • The 1D-CNN model is developed to improve predictive performance. Rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection of heavy metals (HMs) in soil is of importance for ensuring food security and advancing smart agriculture. However, conventional detection methods face numerous limitations, such as complicated operations and time-consuming procedures. This study proposed a novel method using AuAg nanoclusters (AuAgNCs)-modified nanofibrous membranes combined with double-pulse LIBS (DP-LIBS) for the sensitive detection of available cesium (Cs), strontium (Sr), and cobalt (Co) in soil. The AuAgNCs-modified nanofiber membranes were utilized to efficiently adsorb Cs + , Sr 2+ , and Co 2+ from soil solution, with simultaneous DP-LIBS detection. The results revealed that the limits of detection (LODs) for Cs, Sr, and Co in soil reached 0.078 mg/kg, 0.085 mg/kg, and 0.16 mg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model was developed for accurate quantitative analysis and exhibited excellent predictive performance. The residual predictive deviations (RPDs) for Cs, Sr, and Co in soil were 6.0121, 5.1844, and 6.7082, respectively. This method holds great application potential in HMs monitoring, soil risk assessment, and human health protection. Download: Download high-res image (322KB) Download: Download full-size image

Rational B-Site Engineering of a Co/Sr-free Ba0.95La0.05FeO3-δ Cathode With Superior CO2 Resistance and High Activity for Microtubular Ceramic Fuel Cells

Zichen Zhuang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Ting Chen,Zuzhi Huang,Guozhu Zheng,Baoshui Wu,Guangjun Zhang,Xiaofeng Ye,Lang Xu,Shaorong Wang

Co/Sr-based perovskite oxides are extensively utilized as cathodes for both solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs), mainly because of their excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and superior electrical conductivity. However, the high cost and intrinsically unstable nature of Co, coupled with Sr segregation tendency, severely degrade the long-term durability of these cathode materials. In this study, a Co/Sr-free perovskite oxide, Ba 0.95 La 0.05 Fe 0.95 Zr 0.05 O 3-δ (BLFZ), was designed and synthesized via rational doping of 5% high-valent Zr 4+ cation at the B-site of Ba 0.95 La 0.05 FeO 3-δ (BLF) as a bifunctional mixed-conducting cathode material. Systematic measurements coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Zr incorporation effectively enhances the hydration capacity, CO 2 tolerance, oxygen-vacancy concentration, and ORR activity. As a result, excellent electrochemical performance was obtained with BLFZ-based composite cathodes on microtubular PCFCs and SOFCs, achieving peak power densities of 968 mW cm −2 at 700°C and 877 mW cm −2 at 800°C, respectively. The cells also showed favorable long-term stability for over 200 h. Collectively, these results highlight BLFZ as a robust and versatile cathode candidate for dual application in PCFCs and SOFCs.

Structural optimization of Sr/Zn-phosphate conversion coatings triggered by ions preloading on micro/nanostructured titanium surfaces for bacterial infection control and enhanced osteogenesis

Zuo Kangqing,Li Aonan,Si Taoning,Lei Weiyi,Liu Yusheng,Zhang Linbo,Zhang Taixing,Xiao Guiyong,Lu Yupeng,Li Ningbo

Phosphate conversion coatings on metallic implants can synergistically integrate functional components and structural regulation, offering excellent biocompatibility and osteogenic activity. However, the passive oxide layer on the titanium (Ti) surface impedes the following chemical reactivity, adversely affecting the microstructure and properties of phosphate coatings. This study proposes a strategy for achieving structural optimization and properties enhancement of strontium-zinc phosphate (SrZnP) conversion coatings on Ti via regulating interface chemical reaction between coatings and Ti substrates. The results indicated that Sr 2+ and Zn 2+ ions-preloading (IPL) treatment enhanced the interfacial reactivity, which can further achieve crystal refinement and uniform crystal size in nucleation. In contrast, microstructural modifications on Ti substrates induced by acid etching, sandblasting, and alkali etching had minimal effects on the phase composition and crystal morphology (irregular cubic) of the SrZnP coatings. The coatings on IPL-Ti exhibited better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Besides, the coatings with optimized structures and surface characteristics elicited bacterial growth inhibition rates of 91.09% and 84.04% against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), respectively. Meanwhile, the crystal-refined coatings further significantly enhanced the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), proving anticipated osteogenic activity. Overall, the ions preloading strategy on variable micro/nanostructured Ti substrates facilitates the potential application of Sr/Zn-phosphate conversion coatings for repairing infected bone defects.

Energy extraction from dark Fe3+ in A2Sc2B4O11:Fe3+, Yb3+ (A = Sr, Ba) toward promoted NIR luminescence and pc-LED light source for multifunctional applications

Yu Dechao,Liu Haisheng,Lv Mengting,Li Benchun,Zhou Yayun,Han Xinxin,Zhang Dawei

New generation of Cr 3+ -free eco-friendly phosphors (no risk of Cr 3+ → Cr 6+ oxidization toxicity) are highly sought to develop broadband NIR light sources. As an essential element for body health, Fe 3+ ion would be an exceptional alternative in strong octahedral crystal field. Here, the Fe 3+ activators were utilized in orthoborate-pyroborate A 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 for creating novel NIR-emitting phosphors. A broad absorption over 240–450 nm due to O 2- → Fe 3+ charge transfer transition was recorded for Sr 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Fe 3+ (SSBO:Fe 3+ ) at 370 nm and Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Fe 3+ (BSBO:Fe 3+ ) at 355 nm. Resultant NIR emissions with large full width at half maximum about 170 nm were obtained for SSBO:Fe 3+ peaked at 975 nm and BSBO:Fe 3+ at 930 nm. The unique excitation of Fe 3+ doping towards near-ultraviolet (near-UV) region was initially achieved for potential advantage of coupling a mainstream UV chip. Codoping of Yb 3+ into A 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Fe 3+ made emission peak red-shift towards 1000 nm and ~ 160-fold enhancement in the integral intensity owing to a robust energy extraction from the major dark (nonluminous) Fe 3+ . The optimized SSBO:0.02Fe 3+ ,0.15Yb 3+ exhibited considerable internal and external quantum efficiency ~ 78% and 48%, respectively. Compared to the luminescence thermal stability of ASBO:Fe 3+ (32%@373 K, i.e., sustaining 32% of its room-temperature emission intensity at 373 K), the Yb 3+ codoping endowed much superior stability > 63%@373 K, and additional temperature sensing with relative sensitivity ~ 1.5% K −1 at 423 K. Ultimately, by coating the novel phosphors onto UV ~ 365 nm chips, the home-made pc-LEDs were applied in night vision, food inspection, biomedical imaging, and spectroscopy analysis.

Strongly enhanced photoluminescence and X-ray excited optical luminescence of the hydrothermally crystallized (Sr,Mn)5(PO4)3(F,Cl) nanorods by composition modulating

Zhihao Wang,Mengxiao Zhang,Jiao He,Yongan Tang,Tingchao He,Qiang Sun,Dianyuan Fan,Yu Wang

The development of emitting materials that present both photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray excited optical luminescence has recently been attracting rising research interest for visualization applications. We introduced in this study the hydrothermally crystallized (Sr 1- x Mn x ) 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F 1- y Cl y ( x  = 0–0.05, y  = 0–0.40) nanorods with favorable PL and X-ray excited optical luminescence properties after composition modulating. The effects of solution pH and Cl − incorporation on structure and morphology of the products were firstly unveiled. (Sr 1- x Mn x ) 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F gives green emission at ∼548 nm ( 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 ( 6 S)) under either 402 nm excitation or X-ray irradiation, and the optimal PL and X-ray excited optical luminescence were observed at x  = 0.03. The replacement of F − by larger Cl − led to the generation of an amount of Frenkel defects (the dislocated F − and anion vacancies V F . ) along the c -axis, benefit from which the (Sr 0.97 Mn 0.03 ) 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F 1- y Cl y samples present enhanced PL and X-ray excited optical luminescence intensities by factors of 1.6 and 7.4, respectively, and the corresponding optimal y values are determined to be 0.20 and 0.30. Fluorescence decay analysis found steadily shortened fluorescent lifetime for Mn 2+ at higher Mn 2+ and Cl − concentrations, and the underlying mechanism was discussed. The (Sr,Mn) 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (F,Cl) apatite material, with enhanced PL and X-ray excited optical luminescence, may find novel applications for both lighting and scintillating.

Luminescence color tuning and energy transfer properties in (Sr,Ba)2LaGaO5:Bi3+,Eu3+ solid solution phosphors: realization of single-phased white emission for WLEDs

Dongjie Liu,Peipei Dang,Xiaohan Yun,Guogang Li,Hongzhou Lian,Jun Lin

Recently, controllable luminescence tuning and single-phased white light emission have been extensively studied to improve the luminescence performances of phosphors for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In this work, the controllable photoluminescence tuning from bluish-green to red was successfully achieved in Bi3+,Eu3+-codoped Sr2−yBayLaGaO5 solid solutions, combining the effects of crystallographic site engineering and energy transfer. The phase composition and structural variation of the designed phosphors were thoroughly analyzed through X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement. The effects of cation substitutions on the photoluminescence properties were investigated in detail and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. A regular red-shift of Sr2−yBayLaGaO5:0.02Bi3+ in the bluish-green region could be observed when Sr2+ was substituted by Ba2+, which is attributed to the crystal field splitting and nephelauxetic effect. The red-shift of emission of Ba2LaGaO5:0.02Bi3+ phosphor with gradually increasing excitation wavelength reveals that Bi3+ ions occupy different cation sites to form multiple luminescent centers. Besides, the efficient energy transfer was designed and successfully realized in Sr2−yBayLaGaO5:0.02Bi3+,zEu3+ (y = 0–2.0; z = 0–0.20) samples. The energy transfer efficiency can reach up to 88%, 91% and 77% at z = 0.20 for y = 0, 1.0 and 2.0, respectively. Moreover, the thermal quenching behaviors of the studied phosphors reveal that the codoping of Eu3+ could efficiently improve the thermal stability of Sr2LaGaO5:0.02Bi3+ phosphor. Finally, the WLED devices were fabricated by composing 370 nm UV chips and single-phased Sr2−yBayLaGaO5:0.02Bi3+,0.05Eu3+ (y = 0, 1.0, 2.0) phosphors. The as-fabricated devices presented relatively excellent EL performances, the color coordinates of which all locate in the warm white light region. These results indicate the as-prepared Sr2−yBayLaGaO5:Bi3+,Eu3+ phosphors can be potential candidates for color tuning and efficient single-phased white emission in UV-based WLED lighting applications.

Determination of concentrations of Sr and Ba in coal and coal combustion by-products: A comparison between results by ICP-MS and XRF techniques

Xiao Tian,Lei Zhao

Concentrations of trace elements in coal and coal combustion products are commonly analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) due to large number of elements detected and the relatively the low detection limits of this technique. Like other geological samples, complete dissolution of coal and coal combustion products is also essential for accurate ICP-MS results. In this study, Sr and Ba in coal and coal combustion products (fly and bottom ashes) from two coal-combustion power plants from North China analyzed by XRF and ICP-MS were comparatively studied. The concentrations of Sr and Ba analyzed by ICP-MS, when a mixture of acids (2 ml HF + 5 ml HNO 3 for each 50 mg coal sample and 5 ml HF + 2 ml HNO 3 for each 50 mg ash sample) was used for microwave-assisted digestion, do not fit well with the their relative XRF results. This is most probably due to the formation of the fluorides during microwave digestion, and this assumption is supported by the presence of various fluoride compounds, NaMgAl(F, OH) 6 ·H 2 O, NH 4 MgAlF 6 , AlF 3 , and K 2 SiF 6 , in the residues of all the coal and ash samples in our sequential extraction experiment. Cations of Sr and Ba were probably trapped into the divalent cation sites of the fluorides. Concentrations of Sr and Ba analyzed by ICP-MS using increased HF and HF/HNO 3 ratio (7 ml HF and 2 ml HNO 3 for each 50 mg coal/ash sample) are in better agreement with the XRF results. Our results indicate that excess amount of HF probably has led to the suppression of these elements due to fluoride precipitation. The results indicate that the modified digestion method is capable of achieving complete digestion of coal samples and results in a reliable analysis of Sr and Ba concentrations in coal samples and most fly ashes by ICP-MS. However, the formation of insoluble fluorides is probably not completely suppressed for some bottom ash samples, which can result in underestimation of Sr and Ba concentrations. Nevertheless, XRF analysis can serve as a reliable cross-check method to assist in the evaluation of the accuracy of ICP-MS results.

Synergistic effect of 2[V2P2O14]∞ layers and hydrogen bonds inducing large birefringence in M(VO)2(PO4)2·4H2O (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) systems

Xinmei Wang,Lu Qi,Lei Wu,Ruixin Zhang,Maierhaba Abudoureheman,Jiarong Lv,Peng Wang,Xiaoyu Dong,Qun Jing,Zhaohui Chen

Three non-centrosymmetric (NCS) alkaline earth vanadyl(IV) phosphate hydrates, M(VO)2(PO4)2·4H2O (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) 1–3, have been successfully synthesized by a mild hydrothermal technique. The birefringence of 1–3 was calculated to be 0.093@1064 nm, 0.070@1064 nm and 0.133@1064 nm by first principles calculations, respectively. The large birefringence mainly comes from the perfect parallel arrangement of 2[V2P2O14]∞ layers and the force of hydrogen bonds, which is conducive for the enhancement of polarization anisotropy. Furthermore, we also studied other optical and thermal properties for the title compounds as well as the relationship between structures and properties. The results provide a new perspective for exploring nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with large birefringence in vanadyl phosphate hydrates.

A novel M2Ga2GeO7:N3+ (M = Ca, Ba, Sr; N = Cr, Nd, Er) sub-micron phosphor with multiband NIR emissions: preparation, structure, properties, and LEDs

Zhihua Li,Xin Ding,Bing Yu,Yu Min,Bin He,Youqing Shen,Hailin Cong

Near-infrared (NIR) emission materials can be widely applied in various fields, such as food detection, imaging, treatment, electronic products. With the trend of miniaturization of equipment, smaller materials are needed. In this work, we successfully synthesized a series of M2Ga2GeO7:N3+ (M = Ca, Ba, Sr; N = Cr, Nd, Er) samples and then focused on the study of Nd3+ doped Sr2Ga2GeO7 (SGGO). A series of SGGO:xNd3+ sub-micron phosphors were prepared via a microwave-assisted sol–gel process combined with subsequent calcination at 750 ℃, and the structural information and luminescent properties were systematically studied. SGGO is a representative tetragonal crystal and belonging to the space group of P4¯21m (113). The Nd3+ ions occupy eight-coordinated Sr2+ sites in the crystal lattice. From SEM analysis, the average particle size distribution is 219.7 ± 41.4 nm. The sub-micron phosphors have rich excitation spectra ranging from 350 nm to 850 nm and can produce multiband NIR emissions of 1331, 1056, and 905 nm when excited by ultraviolet and NIR light. The maximum emission intensity was obtained by optimizing the doping ratio of Nd3+ ions. A commercial chip was then utilized to fabricate light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to verify its application potential in NIR-II mini-LEDs. Compared with blue light LEDs, the as-prepared LEDs had good imaging penetration depth and could be clearly observed under 10 mm of chicken breast coverage. The maximum imaging penetration depth can be 33 mm.
