Antibacterial and Biodegradable Bandage with Exudate Absorption and Smart Monitoring for Chronic Wound Management

Zhaochuan Yu,Hao Wu,Xing Zhang,Yang Jiang,Chao Liu,Yuqian Liu,Farzad Seidi,Chao Deng

Despite the promising potential of smart bandages in wound care, the lack of effective integration among infection control, exudate management, and real-time wound monitoring remains a major obstacle in clinical application. Herein, neomycin (NEO)-grafted cellulose-based nonwovens (CNs) were used as the antibacterial network and blueberry extract (anthocyanin, AC) as the colorimetric additive to create the excellent dual network gel (DNG) bandage for smart bandages along with a polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanofiber (PVA/CNFs) matrix. The aerogel bandage loaded with AC demonstrates a pH-sensitive color-changing response and high-efficiency free radical scavenging ability (all greater than 93.61%), enabling the in-situ monitoring of wound healing and inhibiting wound inflammation, while the nonwoven network grafted with NEO endows the aerogel composites with excellent antibacterial properties (> 99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli ). In vivo evaluation using a S. aureus -infected full-thickness wound model in mice demonstrated that the DNG bandage significantly accelerated wound healing and improved tissue regeneration, outperforming commercial dressings. Furthermore, upon absorbing exudate, the aerogel converts into a hydrogel, providing efficient fluid absorption and preventing wound re-contamination, thereby achieving dynamic exudate management. Evidently, the DNG smart bandage is a promising management tool for the synergistic treatment of persistent wounds and introduces a fresh strategy for medical regenerative medicine.

Self-utilization of indigenous materials in plateau areas: Peroxymonosulfate activation by manganese modified barley straw biochar for efficient degradation of enrofloxacin

Da Wang,Miao Zhang,Qingjie Xie,Song Han,Sisi Xiao,Huijuan Wang

In this study the indigenous materials in plateau areas were used to cope with the challenge of increasing antibiotics pollution in Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The barely straw was chosen as the raw material to prepare the manganese modified biochar (XBSMBC) and then combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to set up the PMS/XBSMBC system to treat the enrofloxacin (ENR) in water. The study showed that there was a higher PMS activation and thus ENR degradation of the manganese modified biochar prepared from the barley straw than those from Xizang wheat straw and Henan wheat straw. The preparation parameters of the XBSMBC, including the mass ratio of barley straw to manganese and the pyrolysis temperature, for the PMS activation as well as the ENR degradation were reviewed and found that the 1:1 and 900°C were the optimal preparing conditions (XBSMBC-900 (1:1)). The influence of the XBSMBC-900 (1:1) additive amount, PMS dosage and solution initial pH on the ENR degradation was also ascertained. Results of quenching experimental studies and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that ENR degradation in the PMS/XBSMBC system was achieved by a combined effect of SO 4 ·- , ·OH, ·O 2 - and 1 O 2 . Four possible pathways of ENR degradation were provided, and the toxicity analysis predictions were applied to infer the validity of the PMS/XBSMBC process for the ENR solution treatment.

Insight on graphitic carbon nitride prepared by LiCl molten salts for photocatalytic H2O2 evolution: Crucial role of bulk N-defects

Jinqiu Zhuo,Wenwen Lv,Zixin Li,Yaodan Cao,Bingbing Li,Yusen Huangfu,Yuchun Zhang,Jiaxu Zhang,Jie Wu

Molten salt method was effective to improve the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (CN). Nevertheless, various complex reactions took place in flux, leading to the complicated CN molecular structure. Therefore, besides high photoactivity, it was necessary to illustrate the structure-function relationship. Herein, CN nanosheets (CN-S) were prepared. After post-treated by LiCl molten salts, the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 rate over as-obtained CN-S-LiCl- x was dramatically increased from 22.3 to 81.4 mM·g −1 ·h −1 , much higher than the sample post-treated by NaCl and KCl molten salts. Compared to the initial CN-S, the -C N groups, bulk N-defects and surface N-defects were controllably introduced in CN-S-LiCl- x. These critical structural factors on photocatalytic H 2 O 2 performance were quantitatively studied, and the bulk N-defects displayed the correlation of linear relationship as high as 0.945. Electrochemical tests and DFT calculation indicated bulk N-defects were served as the main O 2 adsorption sites with adsorption energy of −4.33 eV, which not only accelerated surface reaction, but also extended light harvest and improved separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers. In photocatalytic H 2 O 2 mechanism study, one-step two-electron reduction and two-step single-electron reduction performed simultaneously, while the latter was primary. Our work has conducted a detailed analysis on the relationship between various structural factors and H 2 O 2 yield, and identified the key role of bulk N-defects. This provides new ideas to investigate photocatalytic H 2 O 2 evolution mechanism and design efficient CN-based photocatalysts.

High-efficient degradation of atrazine via UV-driven persulfate process: Transformation patterns, radical chemistry, and residual ecotoxicity evaluation

Ruipu Yao,Min Xiao,Xiaolong Yu,Xu Jin,Yicheng Dai,Mi Feng,Jiaxing Huang,Jianteng Sun

Atrazine, one of the widely used triazine herbicides, has been proven to endanger both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Herein, the degradation mechanisms of atrazine via ultraviolet-driven persulfate (UV/PDS) and toxicity evolution of its intermediates were specially concentrated. The UV/PDS system demonstrated the exceptional degradation efficacy of atrazine, and the kinetics reaction followed a pseudo first-order kinetic model ( k obs =0.1356 min −1 ). Radical quenching tests and EPR analysis validated that •OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •- mediated the decomposition of atrazine. The presence of HPO 4 2− and natural organic matter exerted a conspicuous suppression on atrazine removal, whereas Cl − displayed a limited adverse effect. The density functional theory (DFT) and Orbitrap-HRMS manifested that atrazine was destructed through dealkylation, dechloro-hydroxylation and alkyl chain oxidation. Toxicity prediction of these intermediates unmasked that most of them exhibited lower acute toxicity and bioaccumulation effects compared to the pristine atrazine. Effective detoxification of atrazine was confirmed by the observed decline in MDA levels and the recovery of Na +/ K + -ATPase activity and membrane potential in E. coli following UV/PDS treatment. The high-efficient removal of UV/PDS for broad-spectrum antibiotics proved the feasibility for pharmaceutical wastewater. This work afforded novel perspectives on the ecological risks of atrazine intermediates, generating crucial recommendations for the elimination of emerging contaminants through UV-AOPs.

Sensight enables quantitative multivariate engineering of high-performance chemical imaging tools

Wen Chenglong,Jiang Ying,Shen Tianruo,Jiang Xuefeng,Fan Shiqi,Yang Taorui,Liu Xiaogang,Luo Qiong,Li Xin

Chemical imaging probes enable the visualization of dynamic biology; however, engineering high sensitivity in live cells remains challenging. Here we present Sensight, a quantitative multivariate framework that integrates key photophysical and physicochemical descriptors to predict and optimize probe performance. Using a structurally diverse library, we identify five dominant parameters, define their optimal ranges, and unify them into a radar map representation with strong predictive power and intuitive visualization. This framework extends the structure–activity relationship analysis into imaging sensitivity, capturing complex structure–function relationships that shape probe behavior in live cells. Guided by Sensight, we design G 3 , a superoxide probe with exceptional sensitivity for detecting early oxidative events. The framework’s generality is further demonstrated across distinct systems, including tetrazine–bicyclononyne bioorthogonal chemistry and formaldehyde sensing. Together, these findings establish Sensight as a predictive and generalizable strategy for high-performance probe design, with broad implications for sensing, imaging, and even theranostics.

Acridinium-based photoredox nanocatalysts for site-selective arene C–H amination in water

Qi Liu,Tianyou Chen,Xiaorong Xiong,Yizhuo Lu,Wen Fan,Zushun Xu

The development of photoredox catalysis in water allows access to green and sustainable organic synthesis. Acridinium salts are entirely organic, powerful, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly photocatalysts, but most of them have poor solubility in aqueous media, leading to a lack of control over their sizes and morphologies that play an important role in catalytic performance. To tackle this challenge, here we have devised an effective strategy for the preparation of acridinium-based photoredox nanocatalysts with controllable size and morphologies in water by using mixing-induced nanoprecipitation (MINP). These catalytic systems could be utilized for site-selective arene C–H amination in water under open air. To inhibit the degradation of acridinium salts, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO) was incorporated for the enhancement of catalytic performance. Moreover, a TEMPO-containing polymer was synthesized for the co-immobilization of an acridinium salt and TEMPO to facilitate their recovery and reuse. As a proof-of-concept, this work may open up an avenue for the development of photoredox nanocatalysts with controllable size and morphologies and for their co-immobilization with other catalytic components.

Solar-driven photothermal activation of peracetic acid for efficient micropollutant degradation: Mechanisms, toxicity assessment and reusability

Jiaqi Meng,Yun Liu,Debing Wang,Bingbing Zhang,Xianchun Tang,Xinying Zhang,Zhichao Wu,Qiaoying Wang

Advanced oxidation processes utilizing peracetic acid (PAA) have garnered significant interest for the removal of micropollutants, while the mechanisms of employing both the light and thermal energy of solar radiation to activate PAA have not been explored. This study adopted the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a photothermal material under solar radiation to synergistically activate PAA for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). The temperature notably increased to a maximum of 63.0 °C under the rGO concentration of 5 mg/L, and an optimal removal efficiency of 92.45 % with a k obs of 0.014 min −1 was achieved. The primary mechanism for CBZ removal was the generation of reactive species through the photoactivation and thermal activation of PAA under solar irradiation. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance analysis identified CH 3 C(O)OO· as the principal contributor to CBZ degradation. Seven potential transformation products of CBZ were identified, and three possible degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity of CBZ polluted water was effectively reduced after photothermal-activated PAA treatment. The removal efficiency of CBZ remained above 90 % after four consecutive cycles of rGO reuse. This study comprehensively elucidates the mechanism of photothermal activation of PAA and thus contributes to the degradation of micropollutants.

Iron directional regulated MXene to construct Ti/O double vacancies for synergistic catalytic ozone to degrade benzotriazole: Enhanced surface hydroxyl groups and electron transfer

Zishui Dong,Sinuo Li,Eldon R. Rene,Zhifei Meng,Weifang Ma

Fe-MXene catalyst featuring Ti/O dual vacancies and multiple active sites was directional designed and synthesized via Molten Salt Self-Assemble, which could realize 96.73% degradation and 77.45% mineralization to 20 mg/L benzotriazole (BTA) within 20 min with amendment of 0.5 g/L Fe-MXene and 15 mg/L O 3 at pH 7.0. The degradation rate attained 0.1836 min −1 with 2.6 times enhancement compared to single O 3 . This highly efficient degradation was ascribed to synergetic effects from 55.92% hydroxyl radicals (•OH), 28.3% superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), and 9.24% singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). These approximately fivefold •OH and threefold •O 2 − active species generation were attributed to superior catalytic activity from Fe-MXene with multivalent redox couples (Fe (II)/Fe (III), Ti (III)/Ti (IV)) and Ti O double vacancies, which enhanced O 3 and electron transport. Fe-Mxene catalyst efficiency maintained over 96% after 5 recycle. This efficient and stable degradation mechanism is mainly driven by Ti O double vacancies, which accelerated direct adsorption O 3 conversion to •O 2 − and indirect chemical generation •OH driven by Fe/Ti electron transfer acceleration. This generation of multiple oxidizing active species accelerated three types of ring-opening behaviors for BTA from hydroxy substitution on benzene ring, oxidation ring-opening of triazole ring, and assistive double bond rupture driven by non-radical pathway. This rapid benzene ring-open induced ecotoxicity reduction, while triazole ring degradation triggered ecotoxicity increase. The extensive application of Fe-MXene catalyst demonstrated that the highly efficient and selective characteristics to refractory coal chemical wastewater containing toxic benzene rings and azole rings.

Bioinspired cellulose nanofiber/brushite composite films with high strength, toughness, and flame retardancy

Zhan Liu,Rui Xiong

The extensive use of petroleum-based plastics has led to severe environmental pollution and resource depletion issues, driving an urgent need for sustainable material alternatives. In this work, we present an environmentally friendly approach to fabricating bioinspired composite films by integrating cellulose nanofibers with brushite microplates via blade assisted assembly. The resulting nacre-like brick-and-mortar architecture is stabilized through hydrogen bonding and dynamic Ca 2+ -carboxyl coordination, leading to a combination of exceptional mechanical and functional properties. The composite films exhibit a tensile strength of 288.15 MPa, a Young's modulus of 7.4 GPa, a fracture toughness of 19.82 MJ·m −3 , and a wet strength of 22.97 MPa, outperforming most previously reported cellulose-based and bioinspired composites. The incorporation of brushite microplates delayed thermal degradation and conferred intrinsic flame retardancy, while also reducing surface hydrophilicity and enhancing long-term water resistance. Furthermore, these films can be easily patterned or printed into complex geometries and have been demonstrated to function reliably as sensors, showing stable and reproducible electrical response under repeated loading and instantly changing humidity.

Cellulose nanofibers reinforced biomimetic hydrogel featuring orthogonal anisotropic architecture for guiding BMSCs directional migration and osteogenic differentiation

Xuehui Zhang,Jinming Yao,Wenjing Yan,Jing Chen,Yanru Xue,Xiaogang Wu,Weiyi Chen,Yanqin Wang,Qiang Zheng,Qiang Li

Natural trabecular bone is typically a complex 3D honeycomb-like material, which can influence the behavior of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), particularly their migration and differentiation direction. However, engineering such biomimetic hydrogels with an orthogonal anisotropic structure similar with trabecular bone via a universal and scalable manner still poses a great challenge. This study develops a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) reinforced composite hydrogel with an orthogonal anisotropic structure, which exhibits a highly aligned fibrous configuration and structural densification, endowing it with excellent mechanical properties and damage-tolerant architectures. Moreover, compared with the composite hydrogel with uniaxially anisotropic structure, this as-developed composite hydrogel with orthogonal anisotropic structure utilizes the interactions between rigid and flexible components to form an anisotropic network structure in orthogonal directions, mimicking the microscopic interactions between collagen fibers and proteoglycans in natural ECMs. It could not only facilitate the physical alignment and directional migration of BMSCs, but also enhance their proliferation and differentiation into osteoblasts. Overall, replicating the structure and properties of natural trabecular bone enhances insights into cellular mechanisms, but also improves the efficiency of bone regenerative medicine treatments.

Highly disordered g-C3N4 with abundant carbon defects boosting photocatalytic tetracycline degradation

Jiaou Qi,Xuli Zhou,Ping Chen,Weixiong Huang,Yanglai Hou,Lilin Lu

Modulating electronic structure to improve photocarriers (photo-generated electrons and holes) separation and suppress photocarriers recombination is crucial for developing highly-active g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst to degrade tetracycline for alleviating environmental pollution. In this work, a highly disordered g-C 3 N 4 catalyst with abundant carbon defects has been developed via optimization of the precursor composition. The g-C 3 N 4 -M 1 C 2 , prepared by pyrolysis of mixed melamine/cyanuric acid precursors with the molar ratios of 1:2, possesses more sensitive photocurrent response, lower recombination of photocarriers and more negative potential of conduction band as compared to other g-C 3 N 4 catalysts. These enhance the photocarrier-production efficiency and promote the formation of superoxide radicals, thus boosting the photocatalytic tetracycline degradation performance. During a 90-min tetracycline degradation reaction catalyzed by g-C 3 N 4 -M 1 C 2 , the degradation ratio reaches about 87.0 %, demonstrating a substantial improvement in photocatalytic performance as compared to other investigated g-C 3 N 4 catalysts (g-C 3 N 4 -M, g-C 3 N 4 -C and g-C 3 N 4 -M 2 C 1 , which are prepared by pyrolysis of melamine, cyanuric acid and mixed melamine/cyanuric acid precursors with the molar ratios of 2:1, respectively). This work opens up new opportunity of developing high-performance g-C 3 N 4 catalysts by modulating electronic structure through optimization of precursor composition.

Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Bisphenol A Under UV–Visible Light Irradiation Using Au/Zn3In2S6 Schottky Junction Photocatalyst

Di Chen,Aoyun Meng,Zhen Li,Jinfeng Zhang

Designing and constructing heterojunctions has emerged as a pivotal strategy for improving the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductors. In this study, we report the controlled synthesis of an Au/Zn3In2S6Schottky junction through a combination of hydrothermal and in situ photodeposition methods. The structural, morphological, and photoelectrochemical properties of the catalyst were meticulously characterized using a suite of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements, and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The optimized 3% Au/Zn3In2S6composite exhibited a remarkable enhancement in both photocatalytic activity and stability, achieving a 90.4% removal of bisphenol A (BPA) under UV–visible light irradiation within 100 min. The corresponding first-order reaction rate constant was approximately 1.366 h−1, nearly 4.37 times greater than that of the pristine Zn3In2S6. This substantial improvement can be attributed to several key factors, including increased BPA adsorption, enhanced light absorption, and the efficient charge separation facilitated by the Au/Zn3In2S6heterojunction. Photogenerated holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals were identified as the primary reactive species responsible for the BPA degradation. This work highlights the potential of metal-modified semiconductors for advanced photocatalytic applications, offering insights into the design of highly efficient materials for environmental remediation.
