In this work, we report the preparation of lanthanide (Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ )-complex-grafted copolymer of methyl methacrylate and maleic anhydride films. The lanthanide complex with three amino groups was used to react with poly(methyl methacrylate-co-maleic anhydride) (P(MMA-MAH)) via the amidation method. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to characterize those polymers. Luminescent properties were evaluated through conducting Photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra, emission spectra and fluorescence decay curves measurements. The infrared analysis reveals the amidation between amino groups and anhydride rings. The comparatively uniform morphology can be observed in the images of TEM and SEM. These polymers can emit intense characteristic lights including red light from Eu 3+ ions and green light from Tb 3+ ions under 294 nm excitation. The lifetimes of polymers are short (about 1 ms). Meanwhile, these luminescent polymers exhibit high thermal stability (T 5 > 200 °C). We also stimulate a lamp to illustrate the possible application. All these approved interesting results suggest that they hold significant promising applications as luminous layers for optoelectronic devices.

This study successfully synthesized Na 5 Y(WO 4 ) 4 doped with Sm³⁺, Pr³⁺, and Tb³⁺ using a high-temperature solid-state method. Photoluminescence spectra revealed that Na 5 Y(WO 4 ) 4 :Sm³⁺ phosphors emits a strong red glow at 646 nm under the excitation of 405 nm, and has an extremely high quantum yield, suggesting their suitability for plant growth LED lighting applications. In contrast, Na 5 Y(WO 4 ) 4 :Pr³⁺ phosphors displayed a lower efficiency but still aligned well with the red-wavelength absorption spectra of plants. Additionally, Na 5 Y(WO 4 ) 4 :Tb³⁺ phosphors demonstrated strong green emission under UV light, indicating potential applications in fingerprint detection. The Site Occupancy Theory (SOT) was utilized to explain the preferential occupation of dopant ions, showing that Sm³⁺ and Tb³⁺ preferred Y1 sites, whereas Pr³⁺ favored Na2 sites.

Lead-free metal halide double perovskites with non-toxicity and stable self-trapped excitons (STEs) have received considerable attention in the field of photoelectric applications. However, it is difficult to achieve independent control of its photoluminescence performance to meet the requirements of multi-band emission. Herein, a doping strategy was employed to introduce lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) into Cs 2 NaInCl 6 :Sb 3+ nanocrystals (NCs), enabling the multicolor emission modulation ranging from blue to red and even white light. Benefiting from the efficient energy transfer from Sb-related self-trapped excitons to Ln 3+ ions, green and red emissions originate from the 5 D 0 → 7 F J (J = 1, 2, 3, 4) transition of Eu 3+ ions and 5 D 4 - 7 F J (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transition of Tb 3+ ions, respectively. According to the tunable polychromatic photoluminescence characteristics of doped NCs, the dual-mode fluorescent anti-counterfeiting applications were exhibited. Furthermore, the distinct temperature sensitivities exhibited by blue (453 nm) and red (617 nm) emission in Cs 2 NaInCl 6 :Sb 3+ /Eu 3+ NCs provide the opportunity for the optical thermometry, which demonstrates the maximum absolute and relative sensitivity are 0.0018 and 0.43 % K −1 , respectively. These results indicate that the synthesized codoped NCs have the potential applications in multifunctional fields, such as optical thermometer, fluorescence anti-counterfeiting, and multicolor-LEDs.

A new aluminum-oxynitride Ce 3+ -Tb 3+ and Ce 3+ -Mn 2+ co-doped Mg 0·695 Si 0·695 Al 1·39 O 3·65 N 0.35 (MSAON) have been prepared by the high-temperature solid-state method at 1500 °C. The structure, photoluminescence properties, energy transfer (ET) mechanism, thermal quenching behaviors have been investigated. The MSAON host has been formed based on the co-substitution method of cation pair. Under UV excitation, the tunable-color emissions from violet to green and red can be realized by properly doping Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Mn 2+ ions. In addition, the type of ET mechanism from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ and Mn 2+ both are confirmed to be electric dipole-quadrupole interaction. However, as temperature increases, the emission intensity of Tb 3+ in MSAON: Ce 3+ , Tb 3+ phosphor occurs a significantly rising trend until 493 K, which is caused by increasing energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ due to the effect of enhanced electron–phonon coupling with rising temperature. This property may be helpful for the investigation of ratiometric optical thermometry. Meanwhile, the MSAON: Ce 3+ , Mn 2+ phosphor shows an excellent thermal stability, maintaining 84.25% of initial intensity at 423 K. The results suggest that they could be feasible multicolor-tunable emission phosphors for potential applications for near -UV WLEDs.

White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in lighting and display devices, and the exploration of phosphors with excellent luminescence performance and good stability is the key to the development of white LEDs. In this work, we reported novel near-UV-excited green-emitting Ca 2 LuHf 2 (AlO 4 ) 3 :Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ garnet phosphors with efficient Ce 3+ → Tb 3+ energy transfer. The CLHA:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ green phosphors were successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state method, and the phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, photoluminescence excitation and photoluminescence spectra, the Commission International de I’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates, quantum efficiency and temperature-dependent emission spectra. Due to the spin-allowed 4f → 5d transition of Ce 3+ ions, the CLHA:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphors exhibited a strong broad excitation band in the 300–470 nm near-ultraviolet (near-UV) range. Under 408 nm excitation, the CLHA:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphors showed strong green light with emission center at 543 nm. The mechanism of energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ ions was attributed to quadruple-quadruple interaction. Impressively, the internal quantum efficiency and external quantum efficiency of the optimal CLHA:0.02Ce 3+ ,0.5Tb 3+ green phosphors were measured to be 77.1% and 55.8%, respectively. Finally, using the CLHA:0.02Ce 3+ ,0.5Tb 3+ phosphors as green-emitting color converter, a near-UV-pumped white LED device was fabricated, and under 80 mA driving current the LED device demonstrated bright warm-white light with high color rendering index (93.7), low correlated color temperature (3574 K), CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.3922, 0.3633), and high luminous efficacy (29.35 lm/W).

Several kinds of novel lanthanide organic–inorganic mesoporous hybrid luminescent materials have been assembled by introducing the ternary lanthanide ions (Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ ) and beta-diketone (TTA, TAA) into the functionalized mesoporous hosts through the coordination bond and covalent bond by using 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane modified 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (Cyclen-Si) as an organic bridge molecule. These multicomponent hybrids are characterized by FTIR, TEM, XRD, thermogravimetric analysis, diffuse reflectance UV–Vis spectra and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, especially the photoluminescence properties of them. The luminescent spectra of the hybrids reveal that the MCM-41 based materials show strong emission intensities, high luminescent quantum efficiencies, long luminescent lifetimes and exhibit characteristic red and green luminescence originated from lanthanide ions (Eu 3+ or Tb 3+ ), which suggesting the Cyclen-Si bridge molecule is favorable for the assembly of lanthanide functionalized luminescent hybrids.

Here, we successfully synthesized the fast-X-ray-charged UV-visible mechanoluminescence (ML) phosphor CaMgGeO4:Tb3+. Fast X-ray charging (only 10 s of irradiation) can induce strong ML from CaMgGeO4:Tb3+, and the ML intensity reaches saturation after only 3 min of X-ray charging. The strong ultraviolet-blue ML emission (380 and 416 nm) of CaMgGeO4:Tb3+ can be used as an excitation source to effectively stimulate LED phosphors to produce ML emission of various colors. At the same time, there is a certain linear relationship between the ML intensity of the sample and the compressive load, indicating that the applied force can be accurately detected. According to the thermoluminescence results, the long-term and stable ML emission of CMG:Tb3+ is due to the continuous distribution of deep traps. The large number of deeply trapped electrons allows the long-term detection of stress bursts. After one-time X-ray charging for 3 min, even after a delay of 84 h, the signal-to-noise ratio can still reach 1.3 (2500 N) and 1.7 (3000 N) in multiple cycles of stress burst detection. The results have shown that CaMgGeO4:Tb3+ can not only be regarded as an efficient excitation source to realize various colors of ML emission, but it can also serve as a sensor to monitor potential force bursts over extended periods, which would expand the application of ML sensors.

Advanced data storage and anti-counterfeiting technologies are critical in addressing modern information safety. In this work, novel nanocomposites of Eu3+, Tb3+, Zn2+ and -hyaluronan for down-conversion and NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles for up-conversion have been synthesized and applied for innovative anticounterfeiting luminescent inks. These inks exhibit excellent fluorescence under dual UV or NIR excitation, and sensitive quenching in response to some ions or compounds, enabling multi-level data encoding, reversible Cu2+ detection, and dynamic information concealment. Utilizing electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing, we achieved precise patterns with line widths of approximately 20–50 μm, facilitating dynamic information concealment and secure data storage. The printed patterns, invisible under natural light, displayed distinct and bright fluorescence when stimulated by UV and NIR light, offering orthogonal readout capabilities for secure information retrieval. Additionally, the luminescent inks demonstrated remarkable sensitivity to Cu2+ ions, with fluorescence quenching efficiency reaching 85.3% at a Cu2+ concentration of 100 μg mL−1. The quenching process was reversible upon introducing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), enabling up to three cycles of fluorescence recovery and suppression with minor degradation (<15%) in intensity after repeated use. The high-resolution EHD printing technology combined with excellent sensing performance, such as a detection limit of 1.2 μg mL−1 for Cu2+, enables a promising strategy for advancing intelligent information systems and hazardous ion detection. This work offers a versatile solution for secure information coding, anti-counterfeiting, and environmental sensing, providing a significant advancement in multifunctional luminescent materials, especially for smart quadruplicate information coding and hazard sensing, with dual UV/IR excitation.

In this paper, a luminescent metal-organic framework Tb 3+ @tartaric acid-functionalized Zr-MOF (Tb 3+ @UiO-67-bpy-TA, TA = tartaric acid) was prepared by post-synthetic modification (PSM) and used as a fluorescence sensor for the detection of the pesticide nitenpyram (NTP). The fluorescence sensing experiment verified that Tb 3+ @UiO-67-bpy-TA had exceptional sensitivity and selectivity for NTP detection, and the detection limit was calculated to be as low as 1.28 µM. The mechanism studies indicated that competitive UV absorption, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and dynamic quenching contributed to the fluorescence quenching process. In addition, the detection of NTP in tap water and Yellow River water samples by the Tb 3+ @UiO-67-bpy-TA were also investigated using standard addition method, and satisfactory recoveries were achieved.

Nitrite (NO2–) and mercury (Hg2+) ions are recognized as two typical inorganic contaminations that can cause severe damage to the environment and humans. In this paper, the energy transfer from carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to Tb3+ by the antenna effect was found, which can promote the f–f transition of Tb3+ and emit strong characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+. Based on CQD-Tb3+ and 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA), which have respectively sensitive and specific fluorescent response to NO2– and Hg2+ with different fluorescent signals, a dual-emission fluorescent probe of the CQD-Tb3+/APBA hybrid was thus fabricated for the simultaneous detection of NO2– and Hg2+ in environmental water samples. They emit dual-emission fluorescence peaks centered at 373 and 545 nm, respectively. A good linearity between the quenching efficiency of (F0 – F)/F0 and the concentrations of NO2– and Hg2+ was in the range of 5.0–1200.0 nM for NO2– and 0.1–6.0 μM for Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD, 3σ/K) is ultrasensitive for NO2– (2.0 nM), and the LOD for Hg2+ is 38.1 nM. The dual-emission fluorescent probe was successfully applied for the determination of NO2– and Hg2+ in various environmental water samples. The possible luminescence and fluorescence quenching mechanisms of the probe are also discussed in detail. This study provides a new approach for fabricating a multifunctional fluorescent probe or sensor and a prospective application in environmental monitoring.
