Seawater electrolysis is an attractive way to generate hydrogen energy . However, to commercialize this technology, it has been focused on developing chlorine-less oxygen generating electrodes for decades. Here, different from common ideas of minimizing chlorine formation at the anode, we aimed at reusing the waste chlorine from seawater electrolysis to mitigate nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. NOx removal performance of electrolyzed seawater containing chlorine was investigated under 254 nm ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in a semi-continuous bubbling reactor. Comparative parametric experiments were conducted for each factor with and without UV irradiation. Significant contributions of UV irradiation on denitrification performance of chlorine were observed under all investigated conditions. A ten-folder improvement in denitrification efficiency by the UV irradiated electrolyzed seawater was achieved under optimal conditions. Possible free radicals’ reaction mechanisms were discussed preliminarily. Results reveal that UV irradiated electrolyzed seawater is a promising way to reuse electrolyzed chlorine and mitigate acid gas emissions.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered to be a new type of solvent due to their low vapor pressure, some unique properties and are expected to be used widely in the following days. Given their water solubility, stable chemical structure, and biological toxicity, ILs probably reach aquatic environments and become long-term pollutants. We studied the fate of benzothiazolium-based ionic liquids catalyzed by UV-H2O2in water. Due to the synergistic effect of UV and H2O2, the degradation efficiency can be significantly improved compared to any of them alone. Fitting results showed that the degradation reaction follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and reaction rate constants with hydroxyl radicals ranging from 0.0005 s−1to 0.0529 s−1. The experimental data showed that satisfactory results can be obtained at a temperature of 45 ℃, an initial concentration of ionic liquid of 0.1 M, and a hydrogen peroxide concentration of 0.1 M. We also explored the effects of chloride ions and pH on degradation reactions. In an appropriate situation, the degradation yield of [C4Bth]PF6could achieve 97% in 60 min and 99% in 90 min. The UV-H2O2combination process could provide an effective technique for the treatment of benzothiazolium-based ionic liquids in wastewater. Keywords:photocatalysis;degradation;benzothiazole ionic liquid;H2O2

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is considered an energy source for the prebiotic chemical synthesis of life’s building blocks. However, it also results in photodegradation of biology-related organic compounds on early Earth. Thus, it is important to find a process to protect these compounds from decomposition by UV irradiation. Herein, pH effects on both the adsorption of peptides on montmorillonite (MMT) and the abilities of peptides to resist UV irradiation due to this adsorption were systematically studied. We found that montmorillonite (MMT) can adsorb peptides effectively under acidic conditions, while MMT-adsorbed peptides can be released under basic conditions. Peptide adsorption is positively correlated with the length of the peptide chains. MMT’s adsorption of peptides and MMT-adsorbed peptide desorption are both rapid-equilibrium, and it takes less than 30 min to reach the equilibrium in both cases. Furthermore, compared to free peptides, MMT-adsorbed peptides under acidic conditions are well protected from UV degradation even after prolonged irradiation. These results indicate amino acid/peptides are able to concentrate from aqueous solution by MMT adsorption under low-pH conditions (concentration step). The MMT-adsorbed peptides survive under UV irradiation among other unprotected species (storage step). Then, the MMT-adsorbed peptides can be released to the aqueous solution if the environment becomes more basic (releasing step), and these free peptides are ready for polymerization to polypeptides. Hence, a plausible prebiotic concentration–storage–release cycle of amino acids/peptides for further polypeptide synthesis is established.Keywords:pH-dependent;adsorption;peptides;UV radiation protection;montmorillonite

UV-cured materials with antibacterial and degradable functions have a wide range of applications, especially in the biomedical field. Herein, a series of UV-cured materials have been prepared based on 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl acetoacetate (EAM), poly (ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (PM) and poly (propylene glycol) bis (2-aminopropyl ether) (D230) at different ratio via UV-thermal dual curing technique. The curing behaviors of these UV-curing systems were monitored by flourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal-mechanical and coating properties of these UV-cured materials were investigated in detail. The results revealed that the various properties of these UV-cured materials could tuned by varying the contents of PM and D230. In addition, the degradable and antibacterial properties of these UV-cured materials were also studied. Notably, these UV-cured materials possessed good degradable and antibacterial properties. They showed great potential for applications the biomedical field.

In recent years, superhydrophobic coatings with self-cleaning abilities have attracted considerable attention. In this study, we introduced hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (OH−PDMS) into castor-oil-based waterborne polyurethanes and synthesized silicone-modified castor-oil-based UV-curable waterborne polyurethanes (SCWPU). Further, we identified the optimal amount of OH−PDMS to be added and introduced different amounts of micro- and nanoscale heptadecafluorodecyltrimethoxysilane-modified SiO2particles (FAS−SiO2) to prepare rough-surface SCWPU coatings with dense micro- and nanostructures, thus realizing waterborne superhydrophobic coatings. The results show that when the OH−PDMS content was 11 wt% and the total addition of FAS−SiO2particles was 50% (with a 1:1:1 ratio of 100 nm, 1 µm, and 10 nm particles), the coatings exhibited a self-cleaning ability and superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of (152.36 ± 2.29)° and a roll-off angle of (4.9 ± 1.0)°. This castor-oil-based waterborne superhydrophobic coating has great potential for waterproofing, anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, and other applications. Keywords:superhydrophobic coating;self-cleaning;castor oil;silicone modification;UV curing;waterborne polyurethane coating

Phase matching is indispensable for high efficiency of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals. Thousands of these crystals rely on birefringence phase matching, whereas only a few of them are quasi-phase matching without the restriction of birefringence. Herein, using oriented seeds inch-sized LiNH 4 SO 4 (LAS) single crystals are successfully grown. LAS is NLO-active with a very short deep-UV absorption edge of 171 nm and high laser damage threshold up to 1.47 GW cm −2 at 1064 nm, 10 ns, but its birefringence is merely 0.0078@532 nm, which is too small to realize birefringence phase matching in deep-UV region. Fortunately, P − E hysteresis loop, variable-temperature NLO tests, and ferroelectric domain observations confirm that LAS is ferroelectric. Furthermore, LAS exhibits small refractive index dispersion resulting in a relatively long periodic length of 1.4 µm and its single domain structure can be easily obtained by electrical poling. These attributes make LAS a scarce NLO candidate for deep-UV quasi-phase matching. This work highlights the longly overlooked potential of sulfates and provides new opportunities for deep-UV NLO materials.

To further improve the performance of all-inkjet-printing ZnO UV photodetector and maintain the advantages of inkjet printing technology, the inkjet printing Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on the inkjet printing ZnO UV photodetector for the first time. The inkjet printing Ag NPs can passivate the surface defects of ZnO and work as surface plasmons from the characterization of photoluminescence (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and finite difference time domain method (FDTD) simulation. The normalized detectivity ( D * ) of the Ag NP-modified detector reaches to 1.45 × 10 10 Jones at 0.715 mW incident light power, which is higher than that of 5.72 × 10 9 Jones of the bare ZnO photodetector. The power-law relationship between the photocurrent and the incident light power of the Ag NP-modified ZnO detector is I pc ∝ P 2.34 , which means the photocurrent is highly sensitive to the change of incident light power.

In order to improve the curing efficiency and reduce energy consumption of silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive (SiPSA), a kind of UV-curable SiPSA based on thiol-ene reaction was prepared with methyl vinyl MQ resin as hard segment, methyl vinyl silicone rubber (110-2S) as soft segment and mercaptyl silicone oil as cross-linker. The UV-cured SiPSA exhibited excellent thermal stability and water resistance. Its physical features such as chemical composition, cross-linking extent and dispersion of MQ resin in silicone rubber were directly related to the vinyl content in MQ resin, the thiol/ene ratio and the resin/rubber ratio, which further affected mechanical properties and adhesive properties of SiPSA. With the vinyl content in MQ resin of 56 mmol/100 g, the thiol/ene molar ratio of 0.8 and the resin/rubber mass ratio of 1.4, the UV-cured SiPSA-B1.4–0.8 had better mechanical properties, moreover it had higher tensile shear strength of >2.0 MPa and showed interface failure on the surface of substrates, indicating that it had great potential applications as PSA.

Metal oxide materials are widely adopted in UV sensing due to their advantages of reliability, stability, and high sensitivity. However, the fabrication of metal oxide films on flexible substrates using micro/nano printing techniques still poses challenges. Notably, inks containing oxide nanoparticles often lead to nozzle clogging during the printing process. In addition, methods relying on precursor solutions typically require high post-processing temperatures that conventional flexible substrates cannot withstand. In this study, a novel precursor ink based on zinc amine hydroxide complexes is proposed, enabling post-processing at a low temperature of 250 °C. Through a fully printed approach, a wearable UV sensor based on a zinc oxide nanofilm on a flexible substrate is successfully fabricated. The sensor exhibits outstanding sensitivity and rapid response characteristics. By incorporating silver nanoparticles into the ink, the baseline resistance of the sensitive material is adjusted. Furthermore, a smart patch utilizing the NFC communication protocol is developed, allowing for wireless, passive, and wearable UV detection. In this study, a process paradigm for fabricating metal oxide films on flexible substrates using micro/nano printing techniques is introduced, showcasing significant potential in the field of micro/nano sensor fabrication.

A simple and chromium-free method for the metallization on engineering plastic polyamide-6 (PA6) by UV irradiation is proposed in this article. The surface graft polymers with specific adsorption activity are developed through one-step UV exposure operation, which captures Pd 2+ in the activation process. The chemisorption of Pd 2+ is further reduced into catalytic Pd 0 to enable the substrate with catalytic nucleus for conventional copper electroless deposition (ELD). The grafting layer and the deposited copper coating are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that successful grafting occurs on PA6 after UV excitation. In addition, the as-deposited copper layer shows excellent conductive performance and high adhesion with the PA6 substrate. It’s expected that this emerging and feasible approach would have broad prospects for the metallization of plastic and offer significant value in the plating industry.

Tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) have been frequently detected in natural and engineering waters, especially in aquaculture water. However, literatures involving in the influence of Cu(II) on the transformation of TC are still insufficient. In this study, we investigated the photolytic fate of TC induced by Cu(II) under UV irradiation. Cu(II) significantly promoted the removal of TC with photolysis rate constant of 0.467 h −1 at TC:Cu(II) molar ratio = 1, which was 49.04% higher than that without Cu(II) (0.238 h −1 ). Cu(II) exhibited multiple influences on both direct and indirect photolysis of TC. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) made a major contribution to Cu(II)-induced TC photolysis, with contribution rates of 24.69% and 12.96%, respectively. Besides, Cu(II) preferred to complex between O20-O21 or O26-O27 to form TC-Cu(II) complexes with complexation ratio of 1. The Condensed Fukui Function and Condensed Double Descriptors values of TC-Cu(II) complexes were calculated for the first time with density functional theory. It showed that TC-Cu(II) complexes were more vulnerable to ROS attack, thus promoting TC degradation. Moreover, Cu(II) greatly changed the photolysis path of TC, mainly through hydroxylation, hydrogen extraction, and deamidation reaction into new byproducts. Furthermore, Cu(II) changed the toxicity of the products via changing the original TC photolysis products. This study provides new insights for the environmental fate of antibiotics, and also has far-reaching implications for wastewater treatment in pharmaceutical and aquaculture industry.

Poly (propylene carbonate) diol with double-bonds on the side chains (PPCAGE) was synthesized form CO 2 , propylene oxide (PO), polyether diol (PPG) and allyl glycidyl ether (AGE). Then, three kinds of CO 2 based polyurethane oligomers (PPCAGE-PU) (PPCAGE-PUA, PPCAGE-PUB and PPCAGE-IPDI, respectively) with different contents of double bond were prepared through the reaction of PPCAGE, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA). The content of -NCO was adjusted by varying the ratio of -NCO terminated prepolymer and HEA. Acrylate copolymer with side double bonds and hydroxyl groups (GMA-PSA) was synthesized by the ring-opening reaction of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and acrylate copolymer (PSA) containing -COOH and -OH. CO 2 based UV-induced peelable adhesive was prepared by mixing PPCAGE-PU, GMA-PSA, active diluent and photoinitiator. The structure of PPCAGE was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR). The reaction of PPCAGE-PUB and GMA-PSA was monitored by FT-IR, companied by the titration of -NCO and epoxide. The molecular weight of PSA and GMA-PSA was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The surface morphology of the adhesive was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The viscoelasticity of adhesive was measured by real-time rheology. The 180° peel strength , micro-surface morphology, gel content, unsaturation conversion and glass transition temperature of UV-induced peelable adhesive were characterized. The results showed that the peel strength of adhesive was 17.82 N/25 mm before UV curing. After UV curing, the surface morphology changed from smooth to rough, the peel strength decreased to 0.08 N/25 mm and the modulus of the PSA increased due to the cross-linking. DSC results showed that the glass transition temperature increased after UV curing.
