Oxychloride phosphors that contain active ions coordinated with both oxygen and chloride ions have garnered significant attention, but the application of oxychloride phosphors is yet limited because of their demanding synthesis condition of vacuum or reducing atmosphere. Herein, we synthesize a new serial oxychlorides of La 9 W 6 O 30 Cl (LWOC) and Er 3+ /Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ doped LWOC through molten salt shielding method (MSS) in air, which is more efficient compared to the traditional method in vacuum. The compound of LWOC crystallizes in the tetragonal system space group P 4 2 / nmc (No. 137) with cell parameters a = b = 10.0445(1) Å, c = 12.6826(4) Å, V = 1279.57(5) Å 3 and Z = 11. The asymmetric unit of LWOC includes three La atoms, one unique W atom, two disordered W atoms with occupancy factors of 0.16(5) and 0.84(5), respectively, one Cl atom and six O atoms. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, all the Er 3+ /Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped LWOC phosphors have excellent upconversion (UC) luminescence with bright visible light emission. A fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) type temperature sensor is developed by using LWOC: Er 3+ , Yb 3+ phosphor as sensing media, which has a maximum relative temperature sensitivity ( S r ) of 0.90 % K −1 at 300 K.

Upconversion nanomaterials have been extensively applied in many fields owing to their unique optical and electronic properties. In this work, β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microcrystals were synthesized by an improved hydrothermal method. The morphology and the composition of the prepared microcrystals were experimentally investigated in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Under the excitation of a 980 nm continuous-wave (CW) laser, the green (541 nm) and red (644 nm) upconversion luminescence (UCL) of Ho 3+ through the energy transfer upconversion processes assisted by the Yb 3+ ions were experimentally studied at the single-particle level. With the gradual increase of excitation intensity in the highly doped Yb 3+ microcrystals, the red UCL was enhanced significantly more than the green UCL and was dominant, resulting in the UCL color finally tuning to pure red. Comparatively, for the lightly doped Yb 3+ microcrystals, the green UCL exhibited a relatively similar increase to the red UCL. The populations of the Yb 3+ and Ho 3+ ions and transitions of the UCL were systematically demonstrated through calculation of the energy levels. Notably, a new UCL at 580 nm was observed, which was ascribed to the transition of 5 F 1 , 5 G 6 → 5 I 7 .

The thermal cycling behavior of Yb 3+ -Ce 4+ -La 2 Zr 2 O 7 /YSZ (LYZCO/YSZ) TBCs was systematically investigated via experiment and first-principles calculation. Results suggest that ceramic grain boundary cracking is the root cause of LYZCO/YSZ TBCs thermal cycle failure. Compared to La 2 Zr 2 O 7 /YSZ TBCs, LYZCO/YSZ TBCs own an outstanding thermal cycle life at 1100 ℃, which is attributed to LYZCO's higher TEC (10.431×10 −6 /K, 1100 ℃) and lower thermal conductivity (1.299 W/(m·K), 1100 ℃). Furthermore, Griffith's separation work of the LYZCO/YSZ interface is merely −0.576 J/m 2 , implying that the LYZCO/YSZ TBCs are particularly prone to cracking at this interface. Weakly bonded La-O is the first site at this interface cracking.

Rare earth (RE) dopants can modulate the bandgap of oxides of indium and gallium and provide extra upconversion luminescence (UCL) abilities. However, relevant UCL fine-tuning strategies and energy mechanisms have been less studied. In this research, InGaO, Ho3+ monodoped and Yb3+/Ho3+ codoped In2O3, and Ho3+ monodoped Yb3Ga5O12 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a solvothermal method. The effects of Yb3+ and Ho3+ dopants on the crystal structures, UCL properties, and optical bandgaps of the oxides were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UCL spectroscopy, and measurements of decay times, pump power dependence, and transmittance spectra. The crystal structures of oxide products of indium and gallium were significantly modified with RE dopants. In2O3 and Yb3Ga5O12 were selected as the host materials. For Yb3+/Ho3+ codoped In2O3 NPs, there existed energy transfers from the defect states of In2O3 to Ho3+ and from Yb3+ to Ho3+. With a fixed Ho3+ concentration, In2O3:0%Yb3+,2%Ho3+ NPs showed the optimal UCL properties mainly due to In2O3–Ho3+ energy transfer and Ho3+–Yb3+ energy-back-transfer, while with a fixed Yb3+ concentration, In2O3:5%Yb3+,3%Ho3+ NPs with a slight Yb2O3 impurity and Yb3Ga5O12:2%Ho3+ NPs did mainly due to Ho3+–Ho3+ cross-relaxation. Besides, the optical bandgaps of In2O3 and Yb3Ga5O12 were noticeably broadened with RE dopants. These findings can offer feasible directions for the synthesis and UCL fine-tuning of RE-doped oxides of indium and gallium and improve their multifunction application prospects in the fields of semiconductor and UCL nanomaterials.

The growing demand for spectroscopy applications in the areas of agriculture, retail and healthcare has led to extensive research on infrared light sources. The ability of phosphors to absorb blue light from commercial LED and convert the excitation energy into long-wavelength infrared luminescence is crucial for the design of cost-effective and high-performance phosphor-converted infrared LEDs. However, the lack of ideal blue-pumped short-wave infrared (SWIR) phosphors with an emission peak longer than 900 nm greatly limits the development of SWIR LEDs using light converter technology. Here we have developed a series of SWIR-emitting materials with high luminescence efficiency and excellent thermal stability by co-doping Cr 3+ -Yb 3+ ion pairs into Lu 0.2 Sc 0.8 BO 3 host materials. Benefitting from strong light absorption of Cr 3+ in the blue waveband and very efficient Cr 3+ →Yb 3+ energy transfer, the as-synthesized Lu 0.2 Sc 0.8 BO 3 :Cr 3+ ,Yb 3+ phosphor emits intense SWIR light in the 900–1200 nm from Yb 3+ under excitation with blue light at ~460 nm. The optimized phosphor presents an internal quantum yield of 73.6% and the SWIR luminescence intensity at 100 °C can still keep 88.4% of the starting value at 25 °C. SWIR LED prototype device based on Lu 0.2 Sc 0.8 BO 3 :Cr 3+ ,Yb 3+ phosphor exhibits exceptional luminescence performance, delivering SWIR radiant power of 18.4 mW with 9.3% of blue-to-SWIR power conversion efficiency and 5.0% of electricity-to-SWIR light energy conversion efficiency at 120 mA driving current. Moreover, under the illumination of high-power SWIR LED, covert information identification and night vision lighting have been realized, demonstrating a very bright prospect for practical applications.

Flexible temperature sensors are crucial for monitoring physiological parameters in smart human wearable devices, however, there is a challenge to realize reproducible, sensitive, real-time, and in-situ temperature sensing simultaneously. Herein, Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Li 2 HfO 3 phosphor thermometries have been designed and prepared, which demonstrate bright upconversion luminescence and precise temperature sensing capabilities. The temperature sensing characteristics of thermally coupled energy states in Li 2 HfO 3 :Er 3+ , Yb 3+ are explored based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, with a maximum relative sensitivity of 0.875% K −1 and a temperature uncertainty of 0.017 K at 300 K. In addition, flexible composite fluorescent optical fiber temperature sensors have been fabricated, and the fiber with a double-cladding structure is employed to monitor human body temperature and airflow heat with satisfying performances. This work not only provides a promising rare earth phosphor thermometry but also opens a new avenue for the development of flexible optical fiber temperature sensors for health management.

For the first time, a straightforward optical fiber temperature sensing system based on La 2 MoO 6 :Er 3+ , Yb 3+ phosphors is proposed. The La 2 MoO 6 : Er 3+ , Yb 3+ phosphors were synthesized successfully using the molten salt method. A dual-mode temperature measurement technique based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) is introduced. The thermally coupled energy levels ( 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 ) and non-thermally coupled levels ( 2 H 11/2 and 4 F 9/2 ) exhibit maximum relative sensitivities of 1.24 % K −1 and 0.79 % K −1 at 293 K, respectively. The temperature resolution achieved was below 0.5 K. By utilizing the phosphor and optical fiber temperature sensor , real-time and accurate temperature monitoring was achieved, with a temperature deviation of less than 0.5 K. The optical fiber temperature sensor system provides exceptional reversibility and stability, while also playing a crucial role in precise remote temperature measurements under challenging conditions.

Petal-like Yb 3+ -Tm 3+ codoped Y 7 O 6 F 9 microparticles were achieved via ionic liquid-assisted (IL) hydrothermal process. The emission efficiency of Y 7 O 6 F 9 :Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ powders is much stronger than that of Y 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ sample. Under excitation at 980 nm with an unfocused laser beam under weak pump density of ∼0.1 W/cm 2 (pump power 10 mW), the UC emission of the sample can been seen clearly. Four emission bands at 477, 540, 647 and 692 nm are observed and correspond to the 1 G 4 state to 3 H 6 state, 1 D 2 state to 3 H 5 state, 1 G 4 sate to 3 F 4 state, and 3 F 3 state to 3 H 6 state transition of Tm 3+ ions. The enhanced UC emission is related to high crystallinity and lower effective phonon energy of oxyfluorides. The ionic liquid (IL) of [BMIM][BF 4 ] is used both as the reaction medium and the source of F − .

This work aims to explore the quantum cutting mechanisms and efficiency of Pr 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped NaLu(WO 4 ) 2 phosphors synthesized via a high-temperature solid state reaction. To optimize Pr 3+ doping concentration, the spectral properties of Pr 3+ single-doped NaLu(WO 4 ) 2 phosphors were examined. The optimum Pr 3+ concentration was found to be 5 mol%, at which the emission intensity from the 3 P 0 level reaches a maximum. Moreover, spectroscopic and dynamic analyses further indicated that the concentration quenching of 3 P 0 and 1 G 4 levels occurs via electric dipole-dipole interaction between Pr 3+ ions. The luminescence mechanisms in NaLu(WO 4 ) 2 : 5 mol% Pr 3+ , x mol% Yb 3+ phosphors were elucidated through the dependence of the steady spectroscopic properties on the Yb 3+ concentration. It was found that the infrared emission of Yb 3+ originates via two distinct pathways: one involves two-step energy transfers from Pr 3+ in 3 P 0 and 1 G 4 to Yb 3+ , namely 3 P 0 + 2 F 7/2 → 1 G 4 + 2 F 5/2 and 1 G 4 + 2 F 7/2 → 3 H 4 + 2 F 5/2 , and the other arises from direct sensitization of Yb 3+ by Pr 3+ in 1 D 2 via one-step energy transfer 1 D 2 + 2 F 7/2 → 3 F 4 + 2 F 5/2 . In addition, the Pr 3+ itself could produce an infrared emission from 1 G 4 to 3 H 4 . Based on the confirmed luminescence mechanisms, the luminescence efficiencies of the Pr 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped NaLu(WO 4 ) 2 phosphors were calculated by taking the corresponding energy transfer efficiencies, radiative transition efficiencies, and non-radiative transition efficiencies, and the factors influencing the total luminescence efficiency were analyzed.

The size of lanthanide upconversion nanocrystals has a considerable impact on their luminous characteristics, but the underlying mechanism is yet unknown. Six typical samples were chosen for systematic size effect experiments after we manufactured monodisperse Y 2 O 2 S: Er 3+ /Yb 3+ microspheres. Our results establish surface defects induced by specific surface area as the fundamental mechanism governing nanoscale structure-property correlations, showing that phosphor particle size can be directionally controlled to maximize both luminescent performance and temperature-sensing capabilities. We have identified the mechanism behind size-dependent optical properties: larger particles alter the emission color and significantly enhance the luminescence intensity. Temperature-sensing behavior also exhibits strong size dependence: absolute sensitivity (S a ) correlates negatively with size and positively with temperature at the thermally coupled level (TCL); at the non-thermally coupled level (NTCL), S a correlates negatively with both size and temperature. It's interesting to note that the S a value for the smallest sample is 17 times higher at TCLs, reaching 0.0866 K -1 . Our findings provide a clear fundamental understanding of size effects in nanoscale lanthanide upconversion luminescence and offer important insights for nanoscale temperature sensing.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphors have garnered notable attention for their extensive applications in anti-counterfeiting, optical imaging , non-invasive medical diagnosis and detection. Nevertheless, the quest for NIR phosphors with outstanding detection and sensing capabilities remains a challenge. In this study, we have successfully prepared Ga 1.6 Mg 0.2 Ge 0.2 O 3 :Cr 3+ ,Yb 3+ NIR phosphors by codoping and substitutation strategies. When incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane films, these phosphors demonstrated a direct correlation between luminescence intensity ratio and applied stress under 450 nm excitation. Moreover, variations in luminescence spectra occurred with different compositions and concentrations of liquids coated on the film, facilitating both force measurement and composition analysis . Furthermore, a NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) was fabricated by integrating phosphor with a blue LED chip, exhibiting excellent performance. Utilizing the prepared NIR pc-LED as a light source , we facilitated non-destructive imaging, night vision, and anti-counterfeiting applications with an infrared camera. These findings suggest that the synthesized NIR phosphors possess hold promise for diverse detection and sensing applications.

The successful synthesis of rare earth doped nano/microcrystals with the desired morphology, uniform monodispersity, and intense infrared emission is of fundamental significance, and would facilitate their application in infrared emission-related miniaturization and integration in optoelectronics. However, simultaneously controlling the morphology and enhancing the infrared emission through simple and effective methods has not been well explored. In this study, via Ca2+ doping with an optimized concentration of 25 mol% in the hydrothermal solution, irregular NaGdF4:Yb/Er submicrocrystals converted into highly uniform submicrorods. Meanwhile, an obvious enhancement of visible upconversion (UC) and near-infrared (NIR) downconversion (DC) emission were obtained, probably due to the improved morphology and lowering the local crystal field symmetry around the rare earth ions induced by Ca2+ doping. Furthermore, Ce3+ ions with an optimized concentration of 2 mol% were codoped to intentionally tailor the branching ratio through efficient energy transfer from Er3+ to Ce3+. As a result, the ∼1530 nm emission intensity of the NaGdF4: 25Ca/2Ce/20Yb/2Er submicrorods increased by about 6.4 times in comparison with the NaGdF4:20Yb/2Er counterpart.
