Multilayer graphene was prepared in this study by microwave burst method. Cu9S5/CoS/graphene and CuS/CoS2/graphene composites were obtained by hydrothermal method to regulate the molecular structure and combination of Cu and Co metal sulfides on graphene
substrate. Graphite oxide was doped by hydrothermal method, and then Cu9S5/CoS/graphene composite was prepared by microwave explosion method. Raman, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the self-made graphene. Results showed that the multilayer graphene had a bag-like
structure which was beneficial to anchor sulfide. Three graphene-based composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy spectrum analysis and electrochemical properties. Moreover, results showed that CuS/CoS2/graphene had the best electrochemical
performance, and its specific capacity reached 324 F/g when the current density was 1 A · g–1, which was much higher than that of the other two samples. Capacity retention rate, interfacial charge transfer resistance and electrolyte diffusion resistance also have advantages.

In this paper, we have designed the composite material of black phosphorus/tungsten nitride (BP/WN) with near-infrared light (NIR light) response as a noble-metal free photocatalyst for the first time. Modification of bulk BP by ball milling can control the band gap of the composite material to achieve efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in the near-infrared region. At wider than 420 nm, and with illumination wider than 700 nm, a certain amount of hydrogen can be produced without any hole quencher. The rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from pure water reaches 10.77 μmolg −1 h −1 under NIR light without any cocatalyst. The presence of a Z-type heterojunction effectively separates photogenerated carriers and prolongs the lifetime of photogenerated carriers, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The results indicate that BP/WN photocatalysts can provide a new approach to artificial photosynthesis and renewable energy conversion.

A multicomponent Bi-based Z-scheme photocatalyst, BISB, was developed through a hydrothermal method. In this sample, two semiconducting nanostructures, BiOI and Bi2S3, were linked together with the metal Bi nanoparticle. As compared with BiOI (BI) and heterojunction BiOI/Bi2S3 (BIS) samples, the BISB had optimal Rhodamine B (RhB) photodecomposition performance. High efficiency separation of photoexcited electrons and holes, decreased band gap energy, extended specific surface area, and promotional redox potential were key factors for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the prepared sample. The photoexcited holes were the key active radicals during the RhB photodecomposition process over the BISB catalyst, while ·O2¯ was also involved to a smaller extent. Additionally, the photocatalyst demonstrated excellent reusability and stability during the photoreaction process, suggesting that the BISB sample could be a candidate for water purification applications.

BiVO 4 is known for its ability to decompose water under visible light irradiation. However, BiVO 4 overall suffers from rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, low photochemical conversion efficiency, low specific surface area, poor conductivity, and weak adsorption capacity of dye. These features limited its application in photocatalysis. In this work, ternary Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 nanocomposites were successfully fabricated by in situ electrostatic adsorption of g-C 3 N 4 sheets on RGO/BiVO 4 surface using hydrothermal and thermal oxidations processes. The ternary Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 nanocomposites were then tested for photodegradation of Rhodamine B. The introduction of graphene into direct Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 nanocomposites as an electronic accelerator efficiently enhanced the photocatalytic properties. The as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 composites exhibited optimal visible light responses with significantly improved photocatalytic performances toward degradation of Rhodamine B. The degradation efficiency using ternary photocatalyst reached 100% after 20 min of irradiation time. The reaction rate constant was estimated to 1.537, which was almost 29- and 20-folds higher than those of pure g-C 3 N 4 and binary g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 , respectively. The synergistic effect between BiVO 4 , RGO and g-C 3 N 4 yielded g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 composites with Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, promoting rapid separation and slow recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs with strong photocatalytic activity. Overall, these findings look promising for design of future Z-scheme photocatalysts for environmental degradation of organic dyes.

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis by utilizing solar energy for sustainable organic pollutant elimination has been a promising tactic to alleviate environmental issues. Nevertheless, the development of robust and efficient photocatalysts to degrade organic pollutants still faces major challenges because of insufficient charge separation. Here we design and fabricate a heterojunction consisting of copper, carbon-modified TiO 2 , and sulfur-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (i.e., S-C 3 N 4 /Cu/C-TiO 2 ). The heterostructure affords a remarkable synergistic photocatalysis for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation, achieving an 82.6% removal efficiency within 30 min under visible light irradiation, about 15.4 and 7.3 times higher than that of S-C 3 N 4 and C-TiO 2 , respectively. The superior performance is attributed to the synergy between Cu doping and the Z-scheme heterojunction, which not only enhances the interfacial electric field effect, facilitating charge separation, but also boosts the redox capability. The charge carrier transfer between Cu/C-TiO 2 and S-C 3 N 4 follows a Z-scheme, as verified by trapping experiments, electron spin-resonance spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the tetracycline hydrochloride degradation pathways are enunciated by liquid chromatograph mass spectrometry analysis. This work provides an effective approach for constructing high-performance photocatalysts that have potential in environmental remediation.

Halide perovskites have attracted widespread attention in the fields of photovoltaics, LEDs, lasers, and photocatalysis due to their unique optoelectronic properties. Here, we proposed a method to synthesize CsPbBr 3 /TiO 2 composite material by embedding precursors into mesoporous titanium dioxide pores and inducing in-situ growth of the perovskites within the pores. Due to the encapsulation of mesoporous TiO 2 , CsPbBr 3 maintains its excellent luminescent characteristics in water, air, and at high temperatures. Furthermore, the Z-type heterojunction structure formed between mesoporous TiO 2 and internal CsPbBr 3 significantly enhances the photo-generated current, and the response time has increased by 1.7 times.

There are still challenges to eliminate and reduce the harmful persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the water, especially the dye-based POPs. Two big obstacles the Ag 3 PO 4 photocatalyst faces are serious carrier recombination and photocorrosion, which presents a limitation for its application in water purification. Therefore, in this work, a novel Ag 3 PO 4 /SrTiO 3 heterojunction was synthesized by a simple in situ deposition method. Ag 3 PO 4 /SrTiO 3 10:1 exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity with rhodamine B (RhB) degradation of 98.8% in only 20 min and methyl orange (MO) degradation of 97.5% in 80 min under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is much higher than that of pure Ag 3 PO 4 and the mixed photocatalysts. During the photocatalytic reaction, h + and •O 2 − are the main active species, and the charge transfer path is satisfied with the Z-scheme mechanism. Additionally, the possible degradation pathways of RhB and MO were proposed by analyzing the intermediate products via HPLC-MS.

The carbonyl compounds synthesized from benzyl alcohol by selective photocatalysis have a wide range of applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, while the fine chemical synthesis remains challenged by inefficient carrier separation and inadequate redox potential control in conventional semiconductor systems. The stability and eco-friendly attribute of lead-free bismuth halide perovskites emerge as promising photocatalysts for practical applications. Herein, we design and synthesize a Z-scheme heterojunction between Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 and Bi 2 WO 6 by an anti-solvent method. The optimized Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 /Bi 2 WO 6 composite demonstrates enhanced photocatalytic performance for benzyl alcohol oxidation, achieving 95 % conversion efficiency with 99 % benzaldehyde selectivity under AM 1.5G irradiation. Systematic in situ characterizations, including electron spin resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy, evidence the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism in Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 /Bi 2 WO 6 , track key intermediates during the oxidation pathway, and mechanistically identify superoxide radicals (• O 2 - ) as the predominant active species. This study not only advances the understanding of photocatalytic mechanisms in Z-scheme organic transformations but also provides a foundational framework for the design of efficient photocatalytic systems.

A novel method was proposed to fabricate a g-C3N4/AgBr nanocomposite photocatalyst by loading AgBr nanoparticles onto the g-C3N4 matrix, which was protonated under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of sulfuric acid. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), photoluminescence (PL) and reactive species trapping measurement were adopted to analyze the structure and properties of the g-C3N4/AgBr nanocomposite photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were also evaluated by decomposing methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution under visible light illumination. The results show that the protonation pretreatment of a g-C3N4 matrix can not only provide growth sites for AgBr grains, but also increase the porosity of the g-C3N4 matrix. Therefore, the AgBr nanoparticles can be uniformly loaded onto the surface of the g-C3N4 matrix, and the specific surface area of the composite can be increased obviously. As a result, the best photodegradation rate of MO over g-C3N4/AgBr nanocomposite photocatalyst is 33.8 and 2.1 times higher than that over pure g-C3N4 and AgBr samples, respectively. Combining the results of EIS Nyquist plots, EPR spectroscopy, reactive species trapping measurement and ˙OH trapping PL spectra, a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is proposed.

With the aim of exploring and modulating the interfacial charge kinetics, a ternary g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/BiVO 4 was constructed with excellent photocatalytic performance and preferable stability toward H 2 evolution in absence of cocatalyst. Both density functional theory (DFT) and experimental results implied that the type II g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 composite can be switched to Z-scheme via Ag nanoparticles as the electron shuttle. The optimal photocatalytic H 2 yield rate achieved for g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/BiVO 4 was 57.4 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , being far surpassed the H 2 harvest rate of g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 , Ag/g-C 3 N 4 and g-C 3 N 4 , which is 2.9, 14.8 and 1.7 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/BiVO 4 photocatalyst was also determined to be 1.23%. Besides, the photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/BiVO 4 well preserved over 5 runs in 50 h. The improved H 2 production performance is considered as the consequence of promoted segregation of photoexcited charge carriers and SPR effects of Ag nanoparticles. In combination with photocurrent measurement, examination of active species and DFT calculation, it is found that Ag nanoparticles as an electron mediator can highly promote the Z-scheme carrier migration that electrons come from conduction band of BiVO 4 will quickly assemble with the photo-induced holes from valence band of g-C 3 N 4 , leaving electrons in the conduction band of g-C 3 N 4 and holes in valence band of BiVO 4 that could greatly enhance the charge separation efficiency.

The construction of heterojunction is an effective strategy to manipulate the dynamic behaviors of photo-induced charges. It is essential for wide band gap semiconductor to introduce defects reasonably to mediate electronic properties and charge behaviors. Herein, through an in situ etching growing method and thermal treatment, dual defective ternary photocatalyst ZnS/ZnO-In 2 O 3 with porous layered structure and extensive heterojunction interfaces has been prepared for visible light photocatalysis of water splitting. The suitable position of intermediate energy level endows the ternary photocatalyst with the ability of electrons directed flow between the different components, and the transfer mode follows Z-scheme. The cascaded dual defects on ZnO and ZnS synergistically facilitate the efficient separation of photo-generated charges through the intimate interface, and further enhance visible light photocatalysis performance. This work is expected to enlighten the rational design of dual defects for wide bandgap semiconductor.

A heterojunction structure LaVO4/g-C3N4 composite with oxygen defects was successfully prepared. The characterization results show that the recombination of electron–hole pairs could be inhibited by the heterojunction structure. The LaVO4/g-C3N4 composite shows superior photocatalytic water splitting performance for the generation of hydrogen and oxygen under visible light irradiation. Experimental data show that under visible light irradiation, the hydrogen and oxygen evolution rates of the LVOCN1 composite are much higher than those of fresh carbon nitride. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of LaVO4/g-C3N4 composites could be significantly enhanced by O defects. Mechanism studies display that the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic water splitting reaction is the Z scheme mechanism.
