Hydrothermal carbonization method was used to produce different hydrochars from chestnut outer shell at various temperatures while resolving the environmental issues of agricultural bio-waste. Hydrochars were adopted as adsorbents to remove heavy metal ions (copper and zinc ions) from aqueous solution. Hydrochar samples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm. An increase in the hydrothermal temperature from 160 °C to 220 °C results in higher BET surface area (18.81 m2 g−1) and the porosity of the samples. The resultant hydrochar at 220 °C exhibited a more excellent adsorption performance (8.13 mg g−1 for copper nitrate) than the other two hydrochars at low hydrothermal temperature. The current study addressed the influence of interfering anions of nitrates, sulfates and chlorides on the adsorption performance. The result shows that the hydrochar possesses larger removal efficiency for heavy metal nitrates that that of chlorides and sulfates.

Microplastics (MPs) have aroused growing environmental concerns due to their biotoxicity and vital roles in accelerating the spread of toxic elements. Illuminating the interactions between MPs and heavy metals (HMs) is crucial for understanding the transport and fate of HM-loaded MPs in specific environmentally relevant scenarios. Herein, the adsorption of copper (Cu 2+ ) and zinc (Zn 2+ ) ions over polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) particulates before and after heat persulfate oxidation (HPO) treatment was comprehensively evaluated in simulated and real swine wastewaters. The effects of intrinsic properties (i.e., degree of weathering, size, type) of MPs and environmental factors (i.e., pH, ionic strength, and co-occurring species) on adsorption were investigated thoroughly. It was observed that HPO treatment expedites the fragmentation of pristine MPs, and renders MPs with a variety of oxygen-rich functional groups, which are likely to act as new active sites for binding both HMs. The adsorption of both HMs is pH- and ionic strength-dependent at a pH of 4–6. Co-occurring species such as humic acid (HA) and tetracycline (TC) appear to enhance the affinity of both aged MPs for Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions via bridging complexation. However, co-occurring nutrient species (e.g., phosphate and ammonia) demonstrate different impacts on the adsorption, improving uptake of Cu 2+ by precipitation while lowering affinity for Zn 2+ owing to the formation of soluble zinc-ammonia complex. Spectroscopic analysis indicates that the dominant adsorption mechanism mainly involves electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. These findings provided fundamental insights into the interactions between aged MPs and HMs in swine wastewaters and might be extended to other nutrient-rich wastewaters.

Chemotherapy resistance is still a great challenge for clinical treatment of lung cancer. Here, we found that doxorubicin (DOX) induced an increase of labile Zn 2+ in lung cancer cells, and these labile Zn 2+ protected tumor cells against DOX cytotoxicity. Nanoparticles encapsulating N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine (TPEN) were then constructed to chelate labile Zn 2+ for tumor therapy. Application of nanoparticle-encapsulated TPEN at low dose not only avoided severe side effects caused by removing physiological Zn 2+ but also effectively chelated drug-induced labile Zn 2+ , and thereby enhanced DOX cytotoxicity. Mechanistically, nanosized TPEN inhibits ABCB1-mediated drug export potentiated by drug-induced labile Zn 2+ . Finally, the results unraveled that nanosized TPEN at low dose endowed DOX with the killing ability on resistant tumor cells. Taken together, our results demonstrate that chelating drug-induced labile Zn 2+ by nanosized TPEN at low dose enhances lung cancer chemotherapy by inhibiting ABCB1, providing a feasible strategy to overcome chemoresistance in lung cancer.

The rock salt structured Li 2 Mg 1-x Zn x TiO 4 ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state method. X-ray diffraction, bond energy and Raman spectra were employed to investigate the crystal structure and polarization characteristics of the ceramics. With the x value increasing from 0 to 0.5, the dielectric constant of Li 2 Mg 1-x Zn x TiO 4 gradually increased from 15.36 to 18.42, which was attributed to the higher polarizability of zinc ions . The variation trend of the polarizability was also in accordance with that of Raman vibration modes. The quality factor of specimens initially increased and then significantly decreased with the increase in Zn 2+ substitution, which could be explained in the variation of packing fraction. In addition, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency showed a tendency of decrease with the decreasing bond energy, implying that the substitution of Zn 2+ influenced the crystal stability of Li 2 MgTiO 4 . An appropriate amount of zinc substitution effectively improved the dielectric permittivity and decreased the dielectric losses of the matrix. The Li 2 Mg 0.9 Zn 0.1 TiO 4 ceramics sintered at 1350 °C possessed excellent microwave dielectric properties with ε r = 16.20, Q·ƒ = 145,200 GHz and τ f = −4.03 ppm/°C, which made these ceramics promising for future applications.

Enhancing proton storage in the zinc-ion battery cathode material of MnO2 holds promise in promoting its electrochemical performance by mitigating the intense Coulombic interaction between divalent zinc ions and the host structure. However, challenges persist in addressing the structural instability caused by Jahn–Teller effects and accurately modulating H+ intercalation in MnO2. Herein, the doping of high-electronegativity Sb with fully occupied d-orbital in MnO2 is reported. The Sb doping strategy engenders the formation of Mn–O–Sb path in the structure with a strong dipole polarization field, which facilitates the delocalization of eg orbital electron in Mn and thus mitigates the Jahn–Teller effects. Simultaneously, adjusting the level of Sb doping in MnO2 leads to modulation of the p-band center of O, optimizing its interaction with hydrogen and thereby enhancing proton storage. Consequently, MnO2 doped with 6% Sb exhibits commendable performance in both rate capability and cycling endurance, delivering 113 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1 after 2000 cycles. This investigation underscores the crucial role of electronic structural engineering in elevating the electrochemical performance of cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries.

Phase change materials (PCMs) with promising potential thermal energy is stored and released much thermal energy during phase change process, which has greatly prospect in building energy conservation, waste heat recovery, energy storage, electrical vehicles (EVs) and other fields. Nevertheless, the low thermal conductivity and easy leakage of PCM is still a challenge to restrict its fasting development. Traditional supporting material is hard to reconcile antileakage and thermal conductivity of composite PCM (CPCM). Herein, the polyethylene glycol (PEG) with three-dimensional Zn 2+ metal–organic gel (ZnHGL) as high-thermal conductivity support framework, styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS) and expanded graphite (EG) has been designed and prepared PZSE with high thermal conductivity, accompany with double transferring heat and supporting network structure. In contrast with pure PEG, the thermal conductivity of PZSE2 is increased by obvious 8.7 times when Zn 2+ metal–organic gel and SBS with the proportion of 1:1, the mass maintenance rate and latent heat storage capacity are increased to 99.5 % and 103.64 J/g, respectively. Further, the thermal imaging camera indicate that PZSE2 exhibit a stable temperature-regulation property, which is benefited to extend the time to adjust the temperature. Additionally, the maximum temperature and temperature differential of the battery module with PZSE2 can be maintained within 60 °C and 6 °C, respectively, even at 1.5C discharge rate after ten cycling process. It indicates that the battery module with PZSE2 has optimum thermal management effect. Therefore, PZSE with metal–organic gel and EG can provide a promising candidate utilization in thermal regulation of EVs and energy storage.

Utilizing an interfacial layer to stabilize Zn-metal anodes has been extensively explored, often accompanied by inhibition of Zn dendrites. However, most interfacial layers primarily delay Zn2+ ion transport/transfer, leading to slow Zn deposition due to the ion kinetics hindrance. Basically, this ionic hysteresis effect is inherent to all interfacial layers and will cause unstable Zn deposition over extended cycling periods. Here, we present a simple composite interfacial layer composed of graphene acid (GA) and cellulose nanofibers (CNF). In the CNF/GA layer, a delicate balance between the rapid Zn2+ transport/transfer and uniform Zn deposition is achieved. The presence of GA not only demonstrates excellent ion selectivity and suppresses corrosion reactions, but also promotes Zn2+ transport/transfer, significantly reducing the desolvation energy of Zn2+ ions. Consequently, the symmetric cell with CNF/GA coatings achieves a highly stable cycling life of 2920 h, surpassing previous reports using graphene-based and CNF-based protecting layers. Moreover, the full cell based on the CNF/GA protected anodes exhibits excellent long-term stability and maintains an ultra-stable self-discharge retention of 99% after 24 h of standing. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of protective layers for Zn-metal anode and future grid-scale Zn battery deployment.

Traditional inorganic anti-mildew materials exhibit limited anti-mildew efficacy when applied to bamboo, while organic anti-mildew reagents face issues of low loading and easy leaching. To address these challenges, this study explored the use of a two-dimensional leaf-shaped zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L), formed by the coordination of 2-methylimidazole with Zn 2+ , as an anti-fungi additive in polyurethane (PU) coatings. The objective was to enhance the anti-mildew properties of bamboo and its products in outdoor environments. Analysis of the mechanical properties reveals that the dynamic mechanical performance of the modified PU coating is significantly improved compared to that of pure PU coatings. The anti-mildew tests further demonstrate that, compared to inorganic zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and small-molecule 2-methylimidazole, the ZIF-L structure exhibits a synergistic anti-mildew effect of Zn 2+ and the 2-methylimidazole ligand, resulting in superior mildew resistance. No fungal growth was observed over 28 days. Furthermore, the ZIF-L modified PU coating demonstrated excellent resistance to leaching in a simulated rainfall exposure experiment, with an extremely low leaching rate of anti-mildew agent in the PU coating. The anti-mildew test after the simulated rainfall exposure confirmed its anti-mildew effect remained durable and stable, with significantly lower area of mold infection. These results reveal that the metal–organic framework (MOF) structure effectively immobilizes 2-methylimidazole and Zn 2+ , providing synergistic mildew resistance. The interaction between ZIF-L and PU enhances the anti-leaching properties of the coating.

The quest for broadband electromagnetic wave absorption to satisfy the demands of various fields has emerged as a prominent research focus in the domain of electromagnetic wave absorption. By considering the effects of magnetic loss and polarization loss across different frequency bands, the development of composite materials incorporating magnetic metal particles and single metal atoms may facilitate an expansion of the electromagnetic wave absorption frequency range. Consequently, we synthesized FeCo@C/Ni@C composites derived from FeCo Prussian blue analogues and polydopamine through wet chemistry and pyrolysis methods. The chelation mechanism of polydopamine, combined with the physical barrier effect provided by Zn ions during synthesis, endows the FeCo@C/Ni@C composite with low-frequency magnetic loss characteristics from the FeCo alloy, high-frequency dipole polarization losses attributed to Ni atoms, and conductivity losses arising from the coupled carbon matrix. Ultimately, the composite exhibits exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption performance: at a thickness of 2.26 mm, it achieves a minimum reflection loss value of − 50.1 dB along with an effective absorption bandwidth reaching up to 6.0 GHz. In summary, this work presents a novel strategy for enhancing broadband absorption capabilities in electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

It is difficult to achieve fast kinetics of Zn2+(H2O)6 desolvation as well as HER inertia at the same electrolyte/Zn interface during long-term cycling of Zn plating/stripping in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Herein, an effective interface construction strategy with hydrophilic transition metal oxides was proposed to achieve that balance using a CeO2 layer coating. The hydrophilic CeO2 layer can bring a balance between improving the access to the anode surface for Zn2+(H2O)6 electrolyte ions, providing uniform Zn2+ nucleation sites and HER inertia. What's more, Zn corrosion can be significantly inhibited benefiting from this coating layer. The efficiency of aqueous Zn-ion batteries showed a great enhancement. Ultra-long plating/stripping stability up to 1600 h and excellent recovery (returning to 0.5 from 20 mA cm−2) for the symmetric CeO2@Zn system were observed. A full cell with the MnO2 cathode (CeO2@Zn//MnO2) with good reversibility and stability (∼600 cycles) was fabricated for practical application. Our work provides a fundamental understanding and an essential solution to deal with the balance between rapid desolvation and inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction, which is important for promoting the practical application of rechargeable Zn batteries.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZIBs) have attracted considerable attention for application in large-scale energy storage systems. However, the progress of RAZIBs has been hindered by the sluggish reaction kinetics and poor structural stability, which are closely associated with the desolvation process of hydrated Zn 2+ . To overcome these issues, an in situ interfacial polymerization strategy is proposed to uniformly germinate a polyaniline (PANI) layer on α-MnO 2 and form an organic–inorganic hybrid cathode (MnO 2 @PANI). Theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations disclose that the polyaniline layer equipped with hydrophilic functional groups can effectively trap the active water molecules to break the strong attraction between H 2 O and Zn 2+ , thereby facilitating the desolvation process of hydrated Zn 2+ , and regulating the Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics and electrode reaction kinetics on the cathode/electrolyte surface. Meanwhile, the irreversible phase evolution and dissolution of active species are largely suppressed due to the PANI shell protecting the α-MnO 2 from the attack of active water molecules. As a consequence, the organic–inorganic hybrid cathode exhibits 401.9 mAh/g after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A/g and long-term durability over 1000 cycles at a current density of 2.0 A/g without irreversible phase transformation. This work provides insight into the regulation of the desolvation process for high performance aqueous energy storage systems.

Overcoming gastrointestinal tract barriers to enhance bioavailability is a major challenge for oral delivery. The innovative design of multi-compartment functional Pickering emulsions would provide an ideal option for targeted co-delivery of bioactive components. In this study, pH-responsive water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) Pickering double emulsions co-loaded with curcumin and fluorouracil were fabricated by zein/anthocyanin (ACN)/Zn 2+ nanoparticles (ZAZn NPs) via a one-step emulsification process. The unique emulsifier was designed by depositing ACN-Zn 2+ complexes on zein nanoparticles (zein NPs). The binding of ACN to the nanoparticle surface through hydrogen bonding interaction enhanced the hydrophilization and stimuli-response of zein NPs. Furthermore, the co-ordination of Zn 2+ and ACN facilitated the formation of nanoparticles with near-neutral wettability, which served as the dominant driving force for the one-step generation of W/O/W Pickering emulsions. The droplet size, distribution and internal structure of Pickering double emulsions were influenced by nanoparticle concentration and oil fraction. Due to Zn 2+ complexation with curcumin at the oil/water interface, the W/O/W Pickering emulsions obtained exhibited high curcumin encapsulation efficiency (91.2%) and free fatty acid release degree (65.9%), resulting in increased bio-accessibility (71.0%). The simulated gastrointestinal release demonstrated that curcumin and fluorouracil achieved controlled intestinal release, which was driven by a pH-mediated competitive adsorption-desorption mechanism. Moreover, in vitro cell experiments showed that co-encapsulated Pickering double emulsions exhibited 2.5 times greater bio-activity than those containing fluorouracil only. This facile strategy for preparing Pickering double emulsions is promising for the co-delivery of different physico-chemical bio-active compounds, which would improve oral bio-accessibility and bio-activity.
