Temperature detection is crucial for public safety as well as knowledgeable security monitoring and fire sensing systems. Thus, enabling visual warnings for various temperatures is highly significant. Herein, secondary color-changing photonic crystal (PC) coatings were fabricated on the metal substrates based on polydopamine degradation and the crystal structure transformation of ZnS nanoparticles when heated across different temperature ranges. The PC coatings exhibit their first color change within 97 s at 300 °C and a second color change after 700 °C (276 s). This color change enables both automated warning responses via computer algorithms and visual detection by the naked eye, achieving effective visual sensing. The PC coatings can be directly applied to the monitoring surfaces for temperature sensing. When integrated with existing surveillance cameras, no additional equipment is required.

Obtaining information about proteins is crucial for exploring the origin and distribution of ancient silk. However, complex burial environments often cause degradation of silk. During archaeological excavations, these silk residues were usually in the form of fibers, fabric fragments or coatings, and in some cases even degrade into peptides that are difficult to find with the naked eye. In this work, a fluorescent immunochromatographic strip assay based on CdSe/ZnS quantum dots, which have high fluorescence quantum yield, good stability, and wide range of excitation wavelengths, was developed for on-site detection of silk residues. The results showed that the strip assay possessed good specificity and recognized silk fibroin within 15 min with a limit of detection (LOD) of 42.66 ng/mL. The strip assay was also successfully utilized for the analysis of ancient silk residues and assisted in obtaining information on residual proteins. In addition, the strip assay is portable, easy to use, and suitable for batch screening and testing. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for rapid identification of silk residues.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) poses significant challenges for achieving efficient cancer remission through monotherapy, making multimodal synergistic therapy a key strategy in tumor treatment. Here, we designed and constructed a hollow core–shell nanocage based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@zinc sulfide@copper sulfide (ZIF-8@ZnS@CuS, denoted as ZZCS), for the combined application of chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT) and photocatalytic therapy (PCT). The Cu 2+ ions in ZZCS imparted peroxidase (POD)-like and catalase (CAT)-like activities, enabling the generation of toxic hydroxyl radicals ( OH) through POD-like catalysis to enhance CDT effect, while also reacting with overexpressed glutathione (GSH) to elevate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. To overcome the inhibitory effects of hypoxia on PCT in the TME, ZZCS catalyzed the production of O 2 from endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) via CAT-like activity, alleviating hypoxia and enhancing the PCT effect. Furthermore, hollow core–shell heterojunction structure of ZZCS exhibited excellent near-infrared absorption and multiple light reflection effects. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, ZZCS showed a high photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 78.1 %) and generated significant amounts of ROS ( OH, O 2 − , 1 O 2 ), enabling the synergistic elimination of tumor cells via PTT and PCT. Benefiting from the combined CDT/PTT/PCT effects, ZZCS demonstrated excellent therapeutic efficacy in vivo, nearly eradicating tumors. This study may provide a promising foundation and potential direction for advancing multimodal tumor therapy. Future studies will focus on conducting long-term investigations to systematically evaluate the efficacy of ZZCS core–shell nanocages in achieving durable tumor eradication.

Typically, general heterostructure easily generates accumulated interior stress at the interface of heterogeneous phases, which will deteriorate the potassium ion storage performance. Macro-control design improving microstructure stability is a promising construction strategy for obtaining high-performance anode materials. Herein, the spherical framework constituted by numerous nanograins has been fabricated for enhancing the electrochemical performance of the hetero-phase of ZnS combined with GeS 2 (ZGS-SP). Specially, the framework of ZGS-SP materials constituted by nanospheres delivers multiple cross-linked nodes, which can effectively disperse the inner stress, thereof improving the structure stability of primary grains. Meanwhile, due to the presence of the acting and reacting force and surficial carbon, the nanospheres can support each other as the framework structure expands in volume during K-ion insertion, thus heightening the structure tolerance of overall framework. As expected, the ZGS-SP materials express a prominent cycling stability (121.6 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 over 1000 cycles).

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in portable electronic devices and hybrid vehicles because of their high energy density, long cycle life and environmental friendliness. Constructing bimetallic sulfide have been demonstrated as most promising strategy for prepare high performance anode materials for LIBs. However, the huge volume change resulting in poor cycle life during the change and discharge process was the key issue of transition metal sulfides. Here, bimetallic sulfide carbon micro-rods consist of Co 9 S 8 /ZnS core and outer carbon shell (Co 9 S 8 /ZnS@C MRs) is synthesized as anode materials for LIBs. Such a well-designed architecture have various advantages including the bimetallic sulfide Co 9 S 8 /ZnS heterostructures can generate built-in electric field, which boosting the ion and electron transfer at the interfaces between Co 9 S 8 and ZnS. Moreover, the outer carbon layer can enhance the conductivity, and buffer the volume expansion of Co 9 S 8 /ZnS during the lithiation/delithiation process. As a result, combined with the merits of heterostructures and core-shell structure, the Co 9 S 8 /ZnS@C MRs exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance. Specifically, it can deliver a high capacity of 591.1 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , and maintain a capacity of 367 mAh g −1 even at 5.0 A g −1 .

Accurate identification of multiple teas based on the difference in their contents and species of metal ions is vital in food inspection and public health. However, achieving accurate sensing from one material with various transduction signals and excellent anti-interference remains a challenge. Herein, a four-channel sensing platform was constructed by combining with four water-soluble InP/ZnS QDs with independent emission. The fluorescence intensities of the four water-soluble InP/ZnS QDs change in different degrees owing to the synergistic coordinative effect between metal ions and ligands. Interestingly, the multi-channel sensing platform allows the qualitative performance of metal ions with excellent anti-interference, high sensitivity, and high accuracy in binary and ternary mixtures. Moreover, the multi-channel fluorescent array exhibited a universality-powerful capability for identifying five teas with satisfactory results. The universal application for detecting Cr 6+ , Hg 2+ , and Cu 2+ in various tea drinks was demonstrated with excellent recovery, indicating a promising potential application in food safety.

The selective and quantitative detection of H 2 O 2 is important for its employment in physiological, environmental and industrial applications. In this paper, a sensitive and selective strategy for H 2 O 2 detection was established based on the fluorescence quenching of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) by H 2 O 2 -mediated etching process of Ag nanoclusters (AgNCs). In this strategy, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) modified AgNCs were applied as H 2 O 2 response group, the existence of H 2 O 2 could initiate the oxidation of AgNCs and the production of Ag + . CdSe@ZnS QDs are very sensitive to Ag + , which could give rise to the effective fluorescence quenching of CdSe@ZnS QDs. Based on this strategy, the present fluorescent assay could realize the quantification detection of H 2 O 2 and the limit of detection is calculated to be 0.3 μM under the optimum conditions. Furthermore, CdSe@ZnS/AgNCs hybrid-based probe was applied to detecting H 2 O 2 in milk samples and showed a good recoveries results ranged from 95.8% to 112.0%, meaning the potential applicability of this strategy.

A sulfide–sulfide ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS heterojunction establishes an S-scheme charge-transfer pathway with intimate interfacial coupling. • Ce act as additional regulation centers to modulate interfacial electronic structure and carrier dynamics. • The S-scheme charge-transfer mechanism is supported by XPS, KPFM, DFT calculations, and ultrafast spectroscopy. • Ce-mediated electronic regulation synergistically enhances CO 2 adsorption, activation, and surface reduction kinetics. • The optimized C2ZZ2 catalyst achieves 140.6 μmol g −1 h −1 CO production through coordinated interface and electronic regulation. Solar-powered photocatalytic CO 2 reduction represents a promising strategy for achieving carbon neutrality through sustainable solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Nevertheless, inefficient charge separation and sluggish interfacial reaction kinetics markedly limit its performance. Herein, Ce-regulated ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS S-scheme heterojunctions were synthesized via a facile one-step in situ hydrothermal strategy to regulate interfacial charge transfer and surface reaction processes. The ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS interface establishes an S-scheme charge-migration pathway, facilitating directional migration and utilization of photogenerated carriers, while Ce incorporation induces electronic redistribution and modulates the local electronic environment. Experimental investigations combined with theoretical calculations reveal that Ce-mediated electronic modulation cooperates with the S-scheme heterointerface to strengthen CO 2 adsorption, accelerate interfacial charge transfer, and reduce the energy barrier of CO 2 reduction. Benefiting from this synergistic electronic regulation, the optimized C2ZZ2 catalyst achieves a CO evolution rate of 140.6 μmol g −1 h −1 , approximately 4.5-fold higher than pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . This work provides mechanistic insights into rare-earth-mediated electronic regulation in metal sulfide photocatalysts, offering a deeper understanding of the relationship among electronic modulation, interfacial charge-transfer dynamics, and CO 2 reduction kinetics. An S-scheme heterojunction, in which ZnS nanospheres are anchored to a defect-containing cerium-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 micro-flowers structure (CxZZy composite), was synthesized via a one-step in situ solvothermal method. This material exhibits outstanding CO 2 catalytic performance under visible light irradiation. Download: Download high-res image (118KB) Download: Download full-size image

A facile sequential cation exchange reaction approach to synthesise two types of ternary sulphide NHs with comparable bulk composition, crystal structure, particle size and interfacial quality, but inverted component sequences of Cu1.94S–ZnS–Co9S8 (CZC) and Cu1.94S–Co9S8–ZnS (CCZ) was reported. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that the ZnS/Co9S8 interface enables efficient charge transfer (τ3 = 46.49 ps) in CZC, whereas the same interface hinders efficient charge migration and leads to severe non-radiative recombination in CCZ. This difference in charge transport behaviour results in a higher hydrogen evolution rate for CZC. Furthermore, extending this strategy to larger-sized rod-shaped CZC NHs achieves a high hydrogen evolution rate of 1047.2 μmol g−1 h−1 with improved structural stability.

Designing a gas sensor equipped with the ability to detect ppb-level ammonia at room temperature remains a substantial challenge. The strategy of enhancing interfacial molecular interactions via interfacial charge transfer is highly feasible for the detection of low-concentration gases. In the research, a mixed-dimensional WS 2 /ZnS heterojunction was synthesized for ammonia detection. The results show that the sensor exhibits an ultra-sensitive ammonia response. The theoretical limit of detection (LOD) for the WS 2 /ZnS sensor is 7.3 ppb NH 3 . Additionally, the sensor delivers excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability. WS 2 /ZnS heterojunction facilitates the chemisorption and diffusion of ammonia. In-situ data and structure analysis reveal that interfacial charge transfer induces the polarization of W-S bonds, facilitating the adsorption of ammonia and the gas-sensing reaction between ammonia and oxygen anions, thereby accelerating the kinetics of the gas-sensing reaction. This work highlights the great potential for constructing a strong chemical bond polarization to improve the detection of low-concentration ammonia of WS 2 -based sensors.

In this work, we develop a new type of Zn-based electrode material, i.e., mulberry-shaped nanostructured zinc metal–organic frame/zinc sulfide (Zn-MOF/ZnS) heterojunction, which was synthesized via a green and convenient one-pot solvothermal method with common zinc salts as the metal precursor, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) as the organic ligand, and thioacetamide (TAA) as sulfur source. The porous structure of zinc metal–organic frame (Zn-MOF) can effectively adsorb and enrich naphthol molecules, accelerating material transport. Meanwhile, the integration of Zn-MOF with zinc sulfide (ZnS) to form the heterojunction interface can promote rapid electron transfer and improve the efficiency of electrocatalytic reactions. When used for electrochemical detection of naphthol isomers in water, the sensing performance of the resultant Zn-MOF/ZnS electrode is significantly improved in comparison with monolithic Zn-MOF and ZnS electrodes. The sensor achieves a detection linear range of 0.4–70 µM, with low detection limits of 30 nM for 1-naphthol (1-NAP) and 10 nM for 2-naphthol (2-NAP), respectively. In addition, the sensor has acceptable anti-interference ability, repeatability, and long-term stability, which can be used for the actual sensing of naphthol isomers in environmental water. This study provides new ideas and references for the development of high-performance electrode material for on-site monitoring of pollutants in water quality. Graphical

Reutilizing heavy metal enriched adsorbents into efficient photocatalysts for antibiotic removal is of great economic value. Herein, spent alkali-lignin biochar (ALB) with enriched Zn 2+ /Cd 2+ ions is valorized into ZnS-CdS/C photocatalyst via a simple vulcanization method. ZnS-CdS/C (3:1) exhibits a superior photocatalytic removal efficiency of 98.6 % for levofloxacin (LEV), with about 60 % of the initial value remained after four cycles. It also shows good photocatalytic removal efficiencies of 92.1 %, 95.4 % and 84.0 % for enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) shows that the introduction of ZnS and CdS in ALB promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies and persistent free radicals (PFRs). The photocatalytic LEV removal mechanism of ZnS-CdS/C indicates that both the abundant PFRs and photogenerated electrons serve as electron donors, efficiently reducing dioxygen to superoxide free radicals (·O 2 - ). The ·O 2 - formed in the above two ways continuously degrade the LEV molecules. Finally, the biotoxicity and developmental toxicity of LEV degradation intermediates confirms that the ZnS-CdS/C degradation system can remove LEV effectively with reduced harm to the ecological environment.
