Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with high aspect ratio, ultrafine template structure and surface modifiability were used as the multifunctional support to fabricate one dimensional (1D) nanoprobe based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) technology. Quaternary ammonium groups were first introduced at the hydroxyl sites on the surface of CNCs to improve the dispersion stability in aqueous solution, and then sulfhydryl groups were conjugated to the carboxyl sites through amidation. Gold nanospheres (AuNSs) were self-assembled on CNCs via strong Au-S bonds to form dense hot spots, which can easily distinguish the rhodamine (R6G) signal of six orders of magnitude when used as a SERS probe. Because the hot spots are fixed along a single CNC, the SERS signal stability and reproducibility are greatly improved compared to those of changeable hot spots formed via the irreversible aggregation of gold colloids. In addition, owing to the cationic charge repulsion effect, the nanoprobe exhibits excellent dispersion stability even in high concentration salt solutions. Considering the good sensitivity, reproducibility and dispersibility, the 1D SERS nanoprobe based on CNCs possess potential application in the field of sensing and detection in aqueous solutions.

Cellulose is the most abundant natural biopolymer material, which has been widely used in film making and food packaging in recent years. However, lignin, a natural bioaromatic material, is always applied as a waste resource due to its low utilization efficiency. In this study, a ZnCl2/CaCl2/cellulose mixed system was used to prepare film materials via a regeneration method. The chemical structure and corresponding properties were characterized. The thermal decomposition process of film materials showed that with an increase of the heating rate, the maximum weight loss temperature gradually shifted to the higher-temperature region. Additionally, the combination of lignin with cellulose as composite films can effectively improve thermal stability. Furthermore, kinetics methods such as Kissing–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO), and Friedman were used to calculate the average activation energy (E). This study proposed a facile method for preparing biobased multifunctional composite films using two kinds of naturally renewable materials.

The design of humidity actuators with high response sensitivity (especially actuation time) while maintaining favorable mechanical properties is important for advanced intelligent manufacturing, like soft robotics and smart devices, but still remains a challenge. Here, we fabricate a robust and conductive composite film-based humidity actuator with synergetic benefits from one-dimensional cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as well as two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) via an efficient vacuum-assisted self-assembly method. Owing to the excellent moisture sensitivity of CNF and GO, the hydrophobic CNT favoring rapid desorption of water molecules, and the unique porous structure with numerous nanochannels for accelerating the water exchange rate, this CNF/GO/CNT composite film delivers excellent actuation including an ultrafast response/recovery (0.8/2 s), large deformation, and sufficient cycle stability (no detectable degradation after 1000 cycles) in response to ambient gradient humidity. Intriguingly, the actuator could also achieve a superior flexibility, a good mechanical strength (201 MPa), a desirable toughness (6.6 MJ/m3), and stable electrical conductivity. Taking advantage of these benefits, the actuator is conceptually fabricated into various smart devices including mechanical grippers, crawling robotics, and humidity control switches, which is expected to hold great promise toward practical applications.

Cellulose is the most abundant natural macromolecular material, which offers a potential alternative feedstock to petroleum-based polymers. However, the large-scale and sustainable transformation of this biomass into available bio-plastics is still a challenge due to its inherent recalcitrance. Here, a sustainable esterification strategy of cellulose was developed to efficiently synthesize cellulose oleate (COE) by ball milling to endow cellulose with thermoplasticity. In this strategy, a low dosage of oleic acid (6 mol per anhydroglucose) and no solvent were used to achieve the goal during the ball-milling process. According to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, the synthesized COEs possessed two major glass transitions at 25.6 °C–57.3 °C and 153.8 °C–172.5 °C corresponding to the motion of oleic side chains and cellulose backbones, respectively. Besides, the prepared COEs with a high degree of substitution (DS, 2.34–2.55) can be readily processed into homogeneous films with flexibility, transparency, and hydrophobicity by hot-pressing at 160 °C. This strategy is advantageous over traditional methods in the aspects of reduced reactant dosage, improved sustainability, and enhanced efficiency, which represents a potential green route to fabricate melt-processable cellulose esters in industry.

Nanocellulose are promising Pickering emulsion stabilizers for being sustainable and non-toxic. In this work, semicrystalline cellulose oligomers (SCCO), which were synthesized from maltodextrin using cellobiose as primer by in vitro enzymatic biosystem, were exploited as stabilizers for oil-in-water Pickering emulsions. At first, the morphology, structure, thermal and rheological properties of SCCO suspensions were characterized, showing that SCCO had a sheet morphology and typical cellulose-Ⅱ structure with 56 % crystallinity. Then the kinetic stabilities of emulsions containing various amounts of SCCO were evaluated against external stress such as pH, ionic strength, and temperature. Noting that SCCO-Pickering emulsions exhibited excellent stabilities against changes in centrifugation, pH, ionic strengths, and temperatures, and it was also kinetically stable for up to 6 months. Both SCCO suspensions and their emulsions exhibited gel-like structures and shear-thinning behaviors. These results demonstrated great potential of SCCO to be applied as nanocellulosic emulsifiers in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

The simultaneous attainment of high strength and high toughness of transparent cellulose nanofibril (CNF) film can expedite its uses in advanced applications. In this work, a wood-inspired strategy is proposed to address the conflict between strength and toughness by using natural derived lignosulfonic acid (LA) as a reinforcing additive. Only 1 wt% LA addition can double the toughness (11.0±1.3 MJ/m 3 ) of pure CNF film. Consequently, the as-prepared CNF/LA-1 nanocomposite film not only exhibits superior mechanical properties (23.6±1.3 MJ/m 3 toughness, 249±6 MPa strength, and 15.4±1.4 % strain), but also maintains an excellent optical transparency of 91.2 % (550 nm). Furthermore, the mechanism for simultaneously enhancing strength and toughness is essentially attributed to the improved hydrogen bonding between CNF-OH and LA-SO 3 H and effective energy dissipation system. This work provides a green and effective approach to prepare strong yet tough and transparent biodegradable CNF film for high-end applications.

Octogen (HMX) composites are widely concerned as defensing weapon warhead due to the superior stability and high energy density . However, there still remain huge challenges for the fabrication of HMX composites with high loading capacity as well as reduced impact sensitivity. Among the various ecofriendly materials reported to date, cellulose has been highlighted as a promising carrier for HMX because of its natural abundance, low cost, physicochemical robustness, lightweight, and recyclability. Herein, we demonstrate a straightforward, eco-friendly suspension atomization regeneration process to prepare cellulose aerogel microspheres (CAMs). Then HMX was homogeneously embedded into the porous CAMs to obtain HMX composite materials (HCMs). As a result, a three-dimensional (3D) network-structure filled with a large number of HMX particles (93.8%) was achieved with insensitive features. Specifically, the impact sensitivity was decreased by 137.13%, the friction sensitivity was reduced to 0%, and the thermal stability of composite energetic materials was also greatly improved. The detonation velocity was estimated as 8136 m/s, almost the same as the calculated value. The combination of cellulose aerogels and HMX broadens the application of cellulose in energetic materials and brings unprecedented potential for energetic aerogel materials with ultra-high loading capacity.

Cellulose limited by fusibility and solubility is impossible to be directly thermoformed, of which the existing progress crucially relies on larger liquids, making it hard to achieve a direct all-green manufacture. Here, we propose an innovative strategy that the surface molecular chains of cellulose nanospheres are activated at 100 °C and intertwined under 500 MPa because of the high molecular activity on the surface of nanospheres and the reduction of activation energy after ball-milling. It is confirmed that only physical changes are involved, according to infrared spectrum. Results show that applicable mechanical properties (hardness and modulus reach 0.44 and 9.66 GPa, respectively) are successfully obtained. Simultaneously, the optimum optical performance of all-cellulose substrate reaches more than 80 % at visible light. Combined with their intrinsic properties, these cellulose-based products could be potentially utilized as biomass substrates. Therefore, our innovative strategy opens up a door for the direct thermoforming of cellulose.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility has aroused great attention for wound healing. However, the surface inertness of BC nanofibers tremendously hindered its biofunctionalized to improve the antibacterial ability and cytocompatibility. Herein, the biofunctionalized BC was fabricated by in situ growing a uniformly polydopamine (PDA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating and grafting bacitracin (BA) on the coating (BA-PPBC). The results confirmed that the BA-grafted PDA/PEI coating was distributed uniformly on the surface of BC nanofibers, and the natural three-dimensional pore structure and other physical properties of pristine BC were retained. Compared to BC, the obtained BA-PPBC materials exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against the adhesion and colonization of S. aureus and MRSA . Moreover, the BA-PPBC not only had no obvious cytotoxicity to NIH-3T3 cells, but also improved the adhesion, proliferation, and spread out of cells. This work provides a biofunctionalized BC dressing to simultaneously meet the requirements of wound healing.

An effective method was developed for the production of reducing sugars (RS) from the hydrolysis of cellulose over a magnetic acid catalyst. The sulfonation of the core–shell structured Fe 3 O 4 @C with Fe 3 O 4 as a magnetic core could generate the magnetic acid catalyst (Fe 3 O 4 @C-SO 3 H). The hydrolysis of cellulose was performed under several crucial conditions. Hydrolysis of cellulose in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) was greatly affected by the content of water. The highest RS yield and glucose selectivity were obtained in 72.1% and 82.5% at 110 °C after 3 h with the weight ratio of [BMIM]Cl to water being 20. It should be mentioned that this catalyst not only owns the high stability but also can be facile recovered by an external magnet.

This study discussed the catalytic cracking process of cellulose in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([bmim]OTF) under 180 °C, 240 °C and 340 °C, found that [bmim]OTF is an effective catalyst which can effectively reduce the pyrolysis temperature(nearly 200 °C) of the cellulose. FRIR, XRD and SEM were used to analyze the structure characterization of fiber before and after the cracking; GC–MS was used for liquid phase products analysis; GC was used to analyze gas phase products. The results showed that the cellulose pyrolysis in [bmim]OTf mainly generated CO 2 , CO and H 2 , also generated 2-furfuryl alcohol, 2,5-dimethyl-1,5-diallyl-3-alcohol, 1,4-butyrolactone, 5-methyl furfural, 4-hydroxy butyric acid, vinyl propionate, 1-acetoxyl group-2-butanone, furan formate tetrahydrofuran methyl ester liquid product, and thus simulated the evolution mechanism of cellulose pyrolysis products based on the basic model of cellulose monomer.

The ambiguous source and uncontrolled solubility of gelatin make it crucial to develop gelatin capsule substitutes. Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) of excellent mechanical performance, good biocompatibility and green origin has drawn many attentions as a new class of biomaterials. In this work, NCC capsule was prepared by dipping method with PEG and glycerol as plasticizer. The effect of PEG and glycerol on the rheological property of NCC gel and the surface morphology of NCC capsule was evaluated. The disintegration time of NCC capsule meet the criteria in United States Pharmacopoeia (USP32-701).There is no significant difference in the release of sulfuric acid between gelatin capsule and NCC capsule. NCC capsule thus has the potential as a green platform for biomedical applications in drug delivery.
