Catalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole by peroxymonosulfate activation system composed of nitrogen-doped biochar from pomelo peel: Important roles of defects and nitrogen, and detoxification of intermediates

Wenqi Wang,Ming Chen

Nitrogen doping could improve the catalytic performance of carbon materials, in which the nitrogen configuration could be used as active sites for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Herein, this paper studied how to turn waste to “treasure” by agriculture waste pomelo peel to prepare nitrogen-doped biochar and successfully applied it to advanced oxidation field. The effects of the sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ), melamine, and pyrolysis temperature on the catalytic activity of biochar for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) were investigated. The optimized nitrogen-doped biochar (C−N−M 1:3:4) possessed high specific surface area (SSA, 738 m 2 /g) and high level of nitrogen doping (nitrogen content 13.54 at%). Accordingly, it exhibited great catalytic performance for PMS activation to remove SMX antibiotic, and 95% of SMX was removed within 30 min. High catalytic activity of C−N−M 1:3:4 was attributed to rich defects, carbonyl group, high content of graphitic N and pyrrolic N, and large SSA, in which non-radical oxidation process based on singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and electron transfer contributed to the SMX degradation. The prepared nitrogen-doped biochar possessed high stability and reusability and the removal efficiency of SMX still reached 80% after four cycles. Additionally, the phytotoxicity assay indicated that the toxicity of degradation intermediates was obviously decreased in the PMS/ C−N−M 1:3:4 system.

Effect of Gelsemium elegans and Mussaenda pubescens, the Components of a Detoxification Herbal Formula, on Disturbance of the Intestinal Absorptions of Indole Alkaloids in Caco-2 Cells

Yinghao Wang,Heshan Wang,Shuisheng Wu,Desen Li,Sainan Chen

Gelsemium elegans (GE) is a kind of well-known toxic plant. It can be detoxified by Mussaenda pubescens (MP), but the detoxification mechanism is still unclear. Thus, a detoxification herbal formula (GM) comprising GE and MP was derived. The Caco-2 cells monolayer model was used to evaluate GM effects on transporting six kinds of indole alkaloids of GE. The bidirectional transport studies demonstrated that absorbance percentage of indole alkaloids in GE increased linearly over time. But in GM, Papp (AP→BL) values of the most toxic members, gelsenicine, humantenidine, and gelsevirine, were lower than that of Papp (BL→AP) (). The prominent analgesic effect members, gelsemine and koumine, were approximately 1.00 in values. Nowhere was this increasing efflux more pronounced than in the case of indole alkaloids with N-O structure. In the presence of verapamil, the values of humantenidine, gelsenicine, gelsevirine, and humantenine were decreased by 43.69, 41.42, 36.00, and 8.90 percent, respectively. The values in presence of ciclosporin were homologous with a decrease of 42.32, 40.59, 34.00, and 15.07 percent. It suggested that the efflux transport was affected by transporters. Taken together, due to the efflux transporters participation, the increasing efflux of indole alkaloids from GM was found in Caco-2 cells.

A MOFs/MIPs@GAs Ternary Composite Catalytic System with Graphene Oxide Aerogels as the Multifunctional Skeleton for High-Efficiency Detoxification of Organophosphate Nerve Agents in Pure Water

Yalin Niu,Peng Jiang,Tianying Guo

Organophosphate nerve agents (OPs) are widely used as pesticides and chemical agents and pose a threat to human health and life. At present, most personal protective equipment usually only serves as physical protection and does not have an effect of chemical detoxification. In this work, ultra lightweight graphene oxide aerogels (GAs) have been used as a multifunctional skeleton to integrate the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) together for obtaining a high-performance hybrid material (MOFs/MIPs@GAs) on hydrolysis detoxification of OPs. As a porous three-dimensional material full of carboxyl groups, GAs can not only support excellent mass transfer performance but also provide a proper pH self-buffering catalytic reaction external environment for hydrolyzing OPs. The obtained MOFs/MIPs@GAs can catalyze dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) hydrolysis detoxification rapidly in pure water (kobs = 0.2227 min–1, t1/2 = 3.11 min). This ternary hybrid material with exceptional performance and practical applicability has vast application prospects for the development of protective equipment.

Self-sustaining reduction-oxidation coupling driven by hydrated electrons and reactive bromine species for synergistic PFAS defluorination and bromate detoxification in bromide-rich water under UV/sulfite

Fang Jiang,Mengsi Wu,Ziyao Zhu,Chenkai Jiang,Zhihui Ai,Jingming Gong

The persistent nature of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) poses critical challenges for conventional water treatment technologies, particularly in bromide-rich matrices where coexisting bromates (e.g., coastal industrial wastewater or landfill leachate), a carcinogenic and mutagenic disinfection by-product amplifies remediation complexity. This study unveils a self-sustaining reduction-oxidation coupling (ROC) mechanism that synergistically harness hydrated electron (e aq − ) and reactive bromine species (RBS) to achieve simultaneous PFAS defluorination and bromate detoxification under UV/sulfite treatment. Through systematic experimentation and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that bromate undergoes stepwise reduction to benign bromide ions while generating radical RBS (e.g., Br • and Br 2 •− ), which electrophilically attack intermediates of hydrogen-enriched fluorotelomer carboxylates (FTCAs) through hydrogen abstraction rather than directly targeting parent perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This endogenous ROC process achieved 96 % defluorination of PFOA within 240 min at pH 10, outperforming conventional UV/sulfite treatment by 36.5 %. Notably, hydrogen-fluorine exchange strengthens adjacent C − F bonds with bond dissociation energy (BDE) up to 125 kcal mol −1 , rendering FTCAs resistant to e aq − but susceptible to bromine radicals, confirmed by Fukui function analysis. Meanwhile, this ROC process also works effectively in bromine-containing waters treated with UV/sulfite, highlighting its universal applicability in real-world water matrices. Across diverse water matrices (e.g., tap water or lake water), the system maintained >70 % defluorination efficiency. Additionally, this eₐ q ⁻/RBS-mediated ROC process demonstrated chain-length universality for C4-C8 perfluorocarboxylic acids and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, while also detoxifying bromate to benign Br − , exemplifying its effectiveness in treating PFAS-contaminated waters with elevated bromide concentrations (e.g., seawater and brine), especially regions burdened with both PFASs and bromate contamination. By exploiting inherent water components as process catalysts, this work establishes a paradigm-shifting strategy for complex PFAS remediation without exogenous oxidant addition, offering dual environmental benefits through concurrent contaminant degradation and disinfection byproduct control.

Triple synergy by one-step reductive smelting separation for full utilization of vanadium extraction tailings: Detoxification, Fe-Cr-V wear-resistant alloy preparation and co-production of Ti-rich residue

Yongji He,Jiamin Zhang,Wei Li,Xiangtao Huo,Haokun Li,Min Guo,Mei Zhang

In order to achieve the harmless and resource-efficient treatment of hazardous elements in vanadium extraction tailings, a one-step reductive smelting separation process was developed to transfer the toxic elements Cr and V into a high valuable vanadium containing ferrochrome alloy. Under the optimal parameter of basicity 1.2, C/O molar ratio 1.2, holding temperature 1550 °C and holding time 50 min, the reduction rate of Fe, V and Cr from vanadium extraction tailings reached 96.14%, 95.98%, 93.60%, respectively, with the simultaneous production of Fe-Cr-V alloy and Ti-rich slag. The hardness of the alloy was 42.27 ± 0.65 HRC and the average friction coefficient was 0.678 ± 0.001, indicating that it basically meets the standards for wear-resistant materials. Toxicity leaching test results demonstrate that the leaching concentrations of Cr and V were 0.030 and 0.013 mg/L, respectively, which were 1/32 and 1/2825 of those in the original slag. These results confirm that the tailings have been effectively rendered harmless and detoxified. Hence, this one-step reductive smelting separation method synchronously realizes metal recovery, wear-resistant alloy preparation and Ti-rich residue co-production, achieving the complete utilization of hazardous vanadium extraction tailings, and provides an effective technical approach for the resource treatment of other toxic waste residues.

A candidate aldehyde oxidase in the antennae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is potentially involved in the degradation of pheromones, plant-derived volatiles and the detoxification of xenobiotics

Mei-Mei Wang,Ming He,Hong Wang,Yun-Feng Ma,Youssef Dewer,Fan Zhang,Peng He

Insect antennae play a fundamental role in perceiving and recognizing a broad spectrum of conventional semiochemicals and host plant-derived odors. As such, genes that are tightly associated with the antennae are thought to have olfactory-related roles related to signal transduction mechanisms. Several mechanisms suggest that enzymatic inactivation could contribute to the signal termination process, such as odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs). To date, a few ODEs have been identified and characterized in detail in insect herbivores, but little is known about aldehyde oxidases (AOXs); moreover, direct in vivo experimental evidence is needed. AOXs are a major family of metabolic enzymes that oxidize a variety of aromatic aldehydes, and they may also play a significant role in detoxification and degradation of environmental chemical cues. Here, we report on the identification and characterization of a novel cDNA encoding the putative odorant-degrading enzyme, PxylAOX3, from the antennae of the diamondback moth , (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). The purified recombinant protein showed a wide-range of substrate zymography oxidizing both sex pheromone compounds as well as plant-derived aldehydes with distinct activities. Our data suggest PxylAOX3 might be involved in the degradation of many structurally diverse aldehyde odorants. Furthermore, PxylAOX3 could participate in olfactory neuron protection by inactivation of redundant odorants and xenobiotic detoxification, making it a potential target for pesticide development as well.
