The effective capture and storage of the generated radioactive contaminant (iodine) are of great significance with the extensive use of nuclear energy. In this work, a novel Cu nanoporous aerogel (Cu-NPA) was prepared by using inorganic Cu salt as precursors. The as-prepared Cu-NPA was fully characterized in detail, and the I 2 adsorption and stability capability of Cu-NPA has been investigated in the solution. The results showed that Cu-NPA has high specific surface area and porosity. The structure of hierarchical pores is conducive to the rapid enrichment of pollutants in water. Adsorption experiments showed that Cu-NPA had ultra-high I 2 adsorption capacity (1384 mg/g) and fast equilibrium adsorption time (10 min). The I 2 in the solution (c < 1200 mg/g) can be almost completely removed. In addition, Cu-NPA exhibits good stability in the air and can be exposed to air for a long time. In general, our work demonstrated the preparation of Cu-NPA and its great potential in the field of rapidly eliminating radioactive I 2 .

Immobilized enzymes have drawn extensive attention due to their enhanced stability, easy separation from reaction mixture, and prominent recyclability. Nevertheless, it is still an ongoing challenge to develop potent immobilization techniques which are capable of stable enzyme encapsulation, minimal loss of activity, and modulability for various enzymes and applications. These microfibers were able to efficiently encapsulate bovine serum albumin (BSA), glucose oxidase (GOx), and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). But the physically adsorbed enzymes readily diffused into the catalytic reaction system. The leakage of enzymes could be substantially inhibited by conjugating to poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and incorporating into alginate-based microfibers, enabling stable immobilization, improved recyclability, and enhanced thermostability. In addition, GOx and HRP-loaded microfibers were fabricated under the optimized conditions for the visual detection of glucose using the cascade reaction of these enzymes, showing sensitive color change to glucose with concentration range of 0–2 m m . Due to the tunability and versatility, this microfluidic-based microfiber platform may provide a valuable approach to the enzyme immobilization for the cascade catalysis and diagnoses with multiple clinical markers. Graphical and Lay Summary Development of potent techniques for the immobilization of enzymes with stable encapsulation, minimal loss of activity, and good reusability is an ongoing challenge. In this study, authors developed co-flow microfluidic devices for the fabrication of alginate-based microfibers with tunable size and crosslinking degree for the stable immobilization of glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase. This microfluidic platform has great potential in the construction of customizable enzyme-loaded microfibers for the cascade catalysis and diagnoses with multiple clinical markers.

As a series of metal organic framework (MOFs), materials of institute lavoisier frameworks (MILs) are expected to be excellent supports for enzyme immobilization due to their good water-stability and acid tolerance. However, enzyme loading on MIL-125-NH 2 is very low due to small pore size and few amino groups on the surface of the MIL-125-NH 2 . In this work, catalase (CAT) was immobilized on the MIL-125-NH 2 and amino functionalized MIL-125-NH 2 by adsorption (CAT@MIL-125-NH 2 ) and covalent binding (CAT@Amino MIL-125-NH 2 ), respectively. Compared with the CAT@MIL-125-NH 2 and free CAT, the CAT@Amino MIL-125-NH 2 displayed high activity recovery, good pH stability, stability against denaturants, and thermostability. Furthermore, activity recovery of CAT@Amino MIL-125-NH 2 was 56% higher than CAT@MIL-125-NH 2 . The CAT@Amino MIL-125-NH 2 still retained 50% residual activity for 14 days at room temperature, whereas free CAT lost activity after storage for 1 day at the same storage conditions. Furthermore, the CAT@Amino MIL-125-NH 2 maintained 62% of its initial activity after 4 consecutive uses, showing good reusability. The results showed that the amino functionalized MIL-125-NH 2 is an excellent carrier of enzyme immobilization.

Electrochemical techniques are considered promising applications to immobilize uranium in alkaline wastewater in order to prevent its migration into groundwater and soil. In this work, the results of electrochemical and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) demonstrate a successful immobilization of uranyl in the carbonate system by U(VI)-U(V), U(V)-U(IV) reduction, and U(V) disproportionation reactions. The results indicated that the electrochemical fixation rate in alkaline system could reach more than 99%. The valence state of uranium is the key factor affecting its migration in the working system. Where, the analysis of the immobilized samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that pHs, current density, and the presence of foreign cations significantly affect the valence state of uranium in the immobilized samples. Under same conditions, the reduction reactions of U(VI)-U(V) and U(V)-U(IV) occurred easily. Where, at pH higher than 3.4 or the current density in the range of 0.5–20 mA/cm 2 , high content of U(V) and U(IV) in the immobilized products was obtained. Other conditions favored the occurrence of the electrolytic water reaction, and the immobilized samples were dominated by U(VI). It was found that the temperature showed the greatest effect on the electrochemical immobilization rate. Where, the electrochemical immobilization rate increased by about 1.8 times when the ambient temperature increased from 293.15 to 328.15 K. This study provides a new idea for the immobilization of uranium in alkaline wastewater and demonstrates the feasibility of electrochemical immobilization of uranium in alkaline systems.

Sb(III) is often detected in contaminated soil and groundwater. Hence, high-efficiency technology is needed. In this study, bimetallic organic frameworks were used for the first time to immobilize Sb(III) from contaminated soil and groundwater. The materials were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Both ends of the prepared material were hexagonal tip rods, and the length became shorter as the ratio of Fe/Mg decreased. The bimetallic organic framework with a Fe/Mg feeding ratio of 0.5 was the optimum material for Sb(III) removal, which could effectively immobilize Sb(III). The adsorption isotherm was fitted well with the Freundlich model, and the optimal adsorption capacity can reach 106.97 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of 84% can be completed in 10 min, which conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The Fe 3+ could enhance the stability of the material, and the Mg 2+ was conducive to freeing up adsorption sites for binding Sb(III) and forming stable chemical adsorption. Ion exchange is the predominant mechanism to remove Sb(III). After 14 days of remediation of Sb(III) contaminated soil, the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)-leached concentrations of Sb(III) were reduced by 86%, 91% and 94% when the material dosages were 1%, 2% and 3%, respectively. Immobilization of Sb(III) in soil resulted in a conversion of antimony speciation from more easily bioavailable species to less bioavailable species, further contributing to reduce the environmental risk of antimony. The results indicate that ferro-magnesium bimetallic organic frameworks may serve as a kind of promising materials for the immobilization of Sb(III) in contaminated soil and groundwater.

A mussel-inspired coating based on catecholamine chemistry can serve as a versatile platform for covalent enzyme immobilization. However, its application was limited by the weak salt/acid/alkali tolerance. To tackle this issue, three silane coupling agents were screened to construct a coating layer on a nylon membrane with tannic acid (TA) for enzyme immobilization. It was found that TA/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and TA/3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyltriethoxysilane (AEAPTES) coatings had higher enzyme loading and activity than TA/3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560), because TA/APTES and TA/AEAPTES coatings formed more nanoparticles and thus provided more active sites for enzyme attachment (taking glucose oxidase as an example). Then, the pH tolerance of the immobilized enzyme was greatly enhanced by reinforcing the interfacial interactions of membrane–coating and coating–enzyme, which was realized by membrane pretreatment, ternary additive, and metal ions chelation posttreatment. The optimized TA/AEAPTES/tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)-Fe3+ coating showed excellent pH stability and reusability, and the immobilized enzyme retained 82%, 83%, and 79% of its initial activity even after 7 h of incubation in buffer solutions at pH 3, 7, and 11, respectively. Such a coating layer was also evaluated for zearalenone hydrolase (ZHD) immobilization, and the immobilized ZHD exhibited boosted activity and robust reusability in the degradation of zearalenone (ZEN, a refractory and hypertoxic mycotoxin). This work not only offered a green and practical strategy for enzyme immobilization but also provided fundamental data in the design of a mussel-inspired coating layer toward versatile applications.

Enzymatic protein ligation has become the most powerful and widely used method for high-precision atomic force microscopy single-molecule force spectroscopy (AFM-SMFS) study of protein mechanics. However, this methodology typically requires the functionalization of the glass surface with a corresponding peptide sequence/tag for enzymatic recognition and multiple steps are needed. Thus, it is time-consuming and a high level of experience is needed for reliable results. To solve this problem, we simplified the procedure using two strategies both based on asparaginyl endopeptidase (AEP). First, we designed a heterobifunctional peptide-based crosslinker, GL-peptide-propargylglycine, which links to an N3-functionalized surface via the click reaction. Then, the target protein with a C-terminal NGL sequence can be immobilized via the AEP-mediated ligation. Furthermore, we took advantage of the direct ligation between primary amino in a small molecule and protein with C-terminal NGL by AEP. Thus, the target protein can be immobilized on an amino-functionalized surface via AEP in one step. Both approaches were successfully applied to the AFM-SMFS study of eGFP, showing consistent single-molecule results.

Functional surfaces that enable both spatial and temporal control of biomolecules immobilization have attracted enormous attention for various fields including smart biointerface materials, high-throughput bioarrays, and fundamental research in the biosciences. Here, a flexible and promising method was presented for regulating the spatiotemporal arrangement of multiple biomolecules by constructing the topographically and chemically diverse polymer brushes patterned surfaces. A series of polymer brushes patterned surfaces, including antifouling brushes patterned surface, epoxy-presenting brushes patterned surface without and with antifouling background layer, were fabricated to control the spatial distribution of protein and cell adhesion through specific and nonspecific means. The fluorescence measurements demonstrated the effectiveness of spatially regulating the density of surface-immobilized protein through controlling the areal thickness of the poly (glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brush patterns, leading to various complex patterns featuring well-defined biomolecule concentration gradients. Furthermore, a multiplexed surface bearing epoxy groups and azido groups with various areal densities was fabricated for regulating the spatiotemporal arrangement of different proteins, enabling binary biomolecules patterns with higher degrees of functionality and complexity. The presented strategy for the spatiotemporal control of biomolecules immobilization would boost the development of dynamic and multifunctional biosystems.

Sr-containing ceramic products produced from geopolymer, (Na, Sr)-GP, have been reported as excellent candidate materials for the immobilization of radionuclide 90Sr, despite sintering temperature at 1200°C. In this work, the product possessing the best immobilization performance (leaching rate of 1.29% for Sr 2+ ) can be produced at 1000°C in the method of liquid-phase sintering via the addition of fluxing agent B 2 O 3 at 2.0 wt% in the geopolymer precursor. The mechanical properties of the geopolymer precursor (Na, Sr)-GP were also enhanced via the promotion role of B 2 O 3 to geopolymerization. It was revealed that the overall anti-leaching ability of the Sr-containing ceramic product not only depends on the microstructure of the loading substrate but also can be affected by the chemical state of radioactive strontium retention in the loading matrix.

Enhanced functions of silk fabric were achieved by complex coating with both gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs). AuNPs were coated onto the silk fabric via in-situ synthesis, which was followed by loading TiO 2 NPs with assistance of polyethyleneimine (PEI). AuNPs imparted vivid color to silk fabric because of its localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which maintained after the further assembly of TiO 2 NPs. The surface morphology and chemical structure of the functionalized silk fabrics were characterized in detail. The AuNP colored silk fabrics with TiO 2 NPs exhibited better light color fastness than the traditional dye colored silk with TiO 2 NPs. Synergistic effect between AuNPs and TiO 2 NPs endowed silk fabric with enhanced antibacterial property against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). More importantly, AuNPs greatly improved the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 NPs on silk fabric for decomposing contaminates. The assembly of functional nanoparticles on fibrous materials provides a potentially facile and effective strategy to achieve versatile fabrics in textile industry.

Silica xerogels have been proposed as a potential support to immobilize enzymes. Improving xerogels’ interactions with such enzymes and their mechanical strengths is critical to their practical applications. Herein, based on the mussel-inspired chemistry, we demonstrated a simple and highly effective strategy for stabilizing enzymes embedded inside silica xerogels by a polydopamine (PDA) coating through in-situ polymerization. The modified silica xerogels were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Fourier tranform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and pore structure analyses. When the PDA-modified silica xerogels were used to immobilize enzymes ofCandida antarcticalipase B (CALB), they exhibited a high loading ability of 45.6 mg/gsupport, which was higher than that of immobilized CALB in silica xerogels (28.5 mg/gsupport). The immobilized CALB of the PDA-modified silica xerogels retained 71.4% of their initial activities after 90 days of storage, whereas the free CALB retained only 30.2%. Moreover, compared with the immobilization of enzymes in silica xerogels, the mechanical properties, thermal stability and reusability of enzymes immobilized in PDA-modified silica xerogels were also improved significantly. These advantages indicate that the new hybrid material can be used as a low-cost and effective immobilized-enzyme support. Keywords:Candida antarcticalipase B;silica xerogel;enzyme immobilization;polydopamine;modification

To effectively immobilize an enzyme while maintaining its high activity and stability, the design of supports with controlled geometric structures and heterogeneous surface properties is desirable. Towards this goal, heterogeneous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) surfaces with controlled pore sizes were synthesized in this study and used to efficiently immobilize lipase. The immobilized lipase activity increased by a factor of 1.31 with an increase in the TiO 2 pore size from 11.46 to 21.14 nm. The highest protein loading of 15.52 mg/g was achieved in ethenyl triethoxy silane (ETS)-modified TiO 2 (E-P25) after immobilizing the enzymes at 30 ℃, pH 7.33 for 3 h and using a protein concentration in solution of 0.176 mg/mL. Among the different surface functionalities, the highest activity yield of 428.04 % was accomplished by using TiO 2 calcinated at 650 ℃ and modified by ETS as immobilization support. The immobilized enzymes showed excellent storage stability and retained almost 95 % of their activity after being stored at 4 ℃ for 8 weeks. This research provides experimental evidence that highlights the importance of studying of enzyme immobilization on the supports with synergistically designed geometric structures and surface chemical properties.
