Preparation of Tannic Acid-Pectin Coated PVDF Membrane for High-Efficiency Separation of Oil and Water Emulsions

Liangku Zhai,Jiuyun Cui,Lei Lu,Hailong Wang,Can Wei,Jirong Luo,Atian Xie

The simple preparation of superhydrophilic membranes with good stability is of great significance for efficient oil–water separation. In this work, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane modified with tannic acid (TA) and pectin (PT) was developed through immersion in TA/PT solutions, facilitating the formation of complexes via co-deposition. The optimized PVDF@TA/PT3 membrane exhibited superhydrophilicity/superoleophobicity. The membrane achieved remarkable separation efficiencies exceeding 98.3% and fluxes ranging from 71.3 to 156.3 L m −2 h −1 for various oil–water emulsions under gravity-driven conditions. Notably, the membrane maintained exceptional durability through 10 separation cycles, retaining about 98% efficiency while exhibiting strong antifouling properties. Excellent separation performance coupled with facile fabrication protocol and chemical stability of the membrane, position the PVDF@TA/PT membrane as a technologically viable candidate for wastewater purification.

Pectin-modified PCN-222 for detecting nitrofurazone residues with dual signals in livestock, poultry, and aquatic products

Keyu Du,Jie Shen,Siyao Zhong,Hefei Wang,Yulou Qiu,Xuping Shentu,Xiaoping Yu,Zihong Ye,Haizhi Huang

Nitrofurazone and its metabolite semicarbazide (SEM) residues present in food products pose substantial health hazards to humans. Herein, the colorimetric–fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for 4[(4-carboxyphenyl)-methylene]-hydrazinecarboxamide (CPSEM) detection was developed using PCN-222@Pectin as a signal tag. Herein, the PCN-222 surface was subsequently modified with pectin to enhance its aqueous solubility and stability. The PCN-222@Pectin-LFIA system exhibited a broad linear range from 0.025 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL. The low limits of detection for the colorimetric and fluorescence-based detection methods were 0.1 and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively. Notably, these values represent a 10- and 20-fold higher sensitivity than that of the traditional colloidal gold nanoparticle-based LFIA. This method was successfully used to detect CPSEM in actual samples, with recovery rates of 89.34 %–120.80 %. This approach fulfills the need for on-site preliminary qualitative assessment during detection and permits subsequent accurate quantitative analysis.

Investigating the interaction mechanism of native pectin and protein in enhancing 3D printing accuracy of edible flower gels

Amel Thanina Amrouche,Minghao Xu,Shengyang Ji,Chen Qi,Nesma S. Abdelaty,Baiyi Lu

Edible flowers are valued for their bioactive, nutritional, and aesthetic properties. This study explored the 3D printability of five edible flowers and identified the essential role of their native biopolymers through integrated analyses of composition, functionality, viscoelasticity, and structure. Heat treatment significantly enhanced printing precision in pectin- and protein-rich gels. The most substantial improvement occurred in pectin-rich roselle (59.96 % to 99.81 %) and protein-rich lotus (90.63 % to 96.25 %). Higher printability was linked to biopolymer-network rearrangement via hydrogen and disulfide bonds and electrostatic interactions, which reduced free water and lowered cellulose crystallinity (up to 11.00 %). These changes improved gel network flexibility, increased storage modulus, and improved microstructural regularity, resulting in smoother layer deposition. In contrast, cellulose-rich gels lacking sufficient pectin and protein underwent recrystallization (4.84 %) and densification after heating, reducing viscoelasticity and printability. These findings provide mechanistic insights for optimizing edible-flower gels for 3D food printing.

NH2-pectin/sorghum stalk composite solar evaporator for efficient microplastics removal and sustainable freshwater generation via interfacial engineering

Yongxin Guo,Jiaoyang Ji,Gang Wang,Sitong Zhang,Yong Yu

Microplastics (MPs) pollution and freshwater scarcity have emerged as one of the most severe global environmental crises, while conventional removal methods often suffer from inefficiency and secondary pollution. Here we developed an interfacial solar evaporator composed of a functional pectin-NH 2 /sorghum stalk (PUS) hydrogel for simultaneous freshwater production and MPs removal. The PUS system achieved evaporation rates of 3.48 ± 0.15 and 3.29 ± 0.07 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in realistic seawater and influent wastewater, respectively. Notably, flow cytometry and in-situ Raman analysis confirmed the effective removal of MPs in seawater (90.24 %) and wastewater (87.14 %). Further long-term experiments (30 d) exhibited evaporation rates of 19.45 ± 1.61 and 19.19 ± 1.43 kg m −2 ·d −1 in seawater and wastewater, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations identified that van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding (NH…O=C and NH…O–C) synergistically govern MPs capture and PUS structural stabilization. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) confirmed a competitive freshwater production cost of 0.12 USD/kg, underscoring the feasibility of large-scale MPs-removing solar evaporation technique. This study reveals the industrial potential of natural functional polysaccharide hydrogels and lignocellulose in freshwater production and deeps the adsorption mechanisms of functional pectin with MPs, which provides new strategies to remove MPs and produce fresh water.

Encapsulation of resveratrol in zein/pectin core-shell nanoparticles: Stability, bioaccessibility, and antioxidant capacity after simulated gastrointestinal digestion

Xulin Huang,Ye Liu,Yan Zou,Xiao Liang,Yaqi Peng,David Julian McClements,Kun Hu

Zein-pectin core/shell nanoparticles loaded with resveratrol were fabricated using a combination of the antisolvent precipitation and electrostatic deposition methods. These nanoparticles were stable to aggregation from pH 2 to 7 and had good heat stability (80 °C for 1 h). The nanoparticles were exposed to a simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT) containing stomach and small intestine phases, and their bioaccessibility and antioxidant capacity were then measured. The bioaccessibility of the encapsulated resveratrol was higher than that of free resveratrol. Moreover, the in vitro antioxidant capacity of resveratrol was greatly enhanced when it was encapsulated inside the biopolymer nanoparticles, as shown by more potent ABTS + · radical scavenging and ferric ion reducing power. The gastrointestinal fluids collected after digestion of the encapsulated resveratrol also exhibited strong intracellular reactive oxygen species scavenging activity. Our results suggest that the biopolymer nanoparticles produced in this study may be an effective oral delivery system for resveratrol that could be used in functional foods or nutraceutical supplements.

Study of chemical characteristics, gelation properties and biological application of calcium pectate prepared using apple or citrus pectin

Shan Zhao,Fan Yang,Yang Liu,Dongsheng Sun,Zhilong Xiu,Xiaojun Ma,Ying Zhang,Guangwei Sun

The most notable and unique property of pectin is the ability to form gel; thus, many biological applications of pectin are based on its gelation properties. Pectin isolated from different plant cell walls may differ in molecular structure and distribution pattern, which may result in different gelling and function properties. In this work, we investigated the chemical characteristics, gelation properties, and biological application of calcium pectate (CaP) prepared using apple (AP) or citrus pectin (CP). These two types of pectins exhibited similar molecular parameters and glycosidic bone structure; however, there was a difference in the composition proportion of single monosaccharide. In addition, it was found that it was relatively easier to form CaP beads with CP compared with AP. Moreover, CP exhibited a higher binding capability with Ca 2+ . The morphological study suggests that CP-CaP beads have a rough wrinkle structure on the surface, which might benefit mass transfer and cell proliferation. Moreover, although there are some differences in the viability and proliferation of cells encapsulated in the AP-CaP and CP-CaP beads, both can be used for cell encapsulation.

Polydopamine modified multifunctional carboxymethyl chitosan/pectin hydrogel loaded with recombinant human epidermal growth factor for diabetic wound healing

Dongxia Gou,Peng Qiu,Fandi Hong,Yufan Wang,Peirou Ren,Xiaowen Cheng,Lei Wang,Tong Liu,Jiaxin Liu,Jun Zhao

The development of a multifunctional wound dressing that can adapt to the shape of wounds and provide controlled drug release is crucial for diabetic patients. This study developed a carboxymethyl chitosan-based hydrogel dressing with enhanced mechanical properties and tissue adherence that were achieved by incorporating pectin (PE) and polydopamine (PDA) and loading the hydrogel with recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF). This EGF@PDA-CMCS-PE hydrogel demonstrated robust tissue adhesion, enhanced mechanical properties, and superior water retention and vapor permeability. It also exhibited significant antioxidant capacity. The results showed that EGF@PDA-CMCS-PE could effectively scavenge 2,2′-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate), (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), and superoxide anions and increase superoxide dismutase and catalase levels in vivo . In vitro cytotoxicity and antibacterial assays showed good biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties. The sustained release of EGF by the hydrogel was confirmed, with a gradual release profile over 120 h. In vivo studies in diabetic mice showed that the hydrogel significantly accelerated wound healing, with a wound contraction rate of 97.84 % by day 14. Histopathological analysis revealed that the hydrogel promoted fibroblast proliferation, neovascularization, and orderly connective tissue formation, leading to a more uniform and compact wound-healing process. Thus, EGF@PDA-CMCS-PE hydrogel presents a promising tool for managing chronic diabetic wounds, offering a valuable strategy for future clinical applications.

Reducing the content of carrier polymer in pectin nanofibers by electrospinning at low loading followed with selective washing

Sisi Cui,Bing Yao,Xue Sun,Junli Hu,Yifa Zhou,Yichun Liu

Nanofibers of natural polymers represent an essential class of materials in biomedicine. Pectin is a plant-sourced anionic polysaccharide widely used in food products and biomedicine owning to its abundance, biocompatibility and inherent bioactivity. However, current electrospun pectin nanofibers are suffered from high content of carrier polymer, which may lead to low integrity and mechanical strength as well as in vivo toxicity. We report here a strategy to reduce the content of carrier polymer, polyethylene oxide (PEO) in our study, in pectin nanofibers, via electrospinning at low loading followed with selective washing. With improved electrospinning condition, we first enabled electrospinning of pectin nanofibers at low PEO loading. Then the PEO was removed by washing with a selective solvent to give pectin nanofibers containing only 1.5% PEO. The strategy was versatile to pectins from various sources and of various degree of esterification. The pectin nanofibers exhibited Young's modulus as high as 358.5   MPa. In view of their rich bioactivity, the pectin nanofibers of low content of carrier polymer are promising materials for a wide range of biomedical applications.

Orange peel-derived pectin/cellulose nanofibril hydrogel reinforced by Eu-MOF for simultaneous adsorption and detection of levofloxacin

Yuting Zhang,Xinmiao Qi,Binzhen Liu,Liangkun Li,Xin Guo

Orange peel is an abundant polysaccharide-rich agro-industrial residue that is often discarded, causing resource loss and environmental burden. Here, we valorize orange peel-derived pectin into a mechanically robust and photostable fluorescent hydrogel (EuCPH) by embedding uniformly dispersed Europium-based metal-organic framework decorated cellulose nanofibril (Eu-MOF@CNF). The resulting red-emissive EuCPH enables simultaneous levofloxacin (LEV) capture and fluorescence sensing. EuCPH-4 exhibits an ultrahigh Langmuir capacity of 1388.6 mg g −1 and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 μg L −1 . Adsorption follows the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics, consistent with chemisorption-dominated uptake. EuCPH-4 retains 83.8% of its capacity after five cycles with negligible Eu leaching (<8 ppb) and sustains stable performance over ten fixed-bed regeneration cycles. With low-cost orange peel-derived pectin and wood-derived CNF, EuCPH can be produced at ~0.02 CNY g −1 , providing a scalable and economically viable hydrogel platform for antibiotic monitoring and remediation.

Epigallocatechin gallate-loaded alginate-peanut protein hydrogel beads: Influence of pectin-based crosslinking and chitosan-based coating strategies

Yuwei Wang,Xuefei Wang,Yuchen Zhu,Qian Chen,Zengwang Guo,Baohua Kong,Haotian Liu,Wei Li

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) exhibits potent antioxidant capacity along with multiple health-promoting bioactivities; however, its low bioavailability has limited its practical application. In this study, composite hydrogel beads were fabricated using sodium alginate (SA) and peanut protein isolate (PPI) as the primary matrix materials, and EGCG was encapsulated via two distinct strategies: blending low-methoxy pectin (LMP) with SA for calcium ion–induced multiple cross-linking, and combining quaternized chitosan (QC) with SA through interfacial layer-by-layer self-assembly to create an electrostatic coating. Both aimed to improve EGCG stability during digestion and enhance its functionality. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of LMP and QC both enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogel beads ( P <  0.05), with hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions serving as the primary forces driving gel formation. LMP addition reduced encapsulation efficiency (EE), whereas QC enhanced it; the highest EE (74.23%) was achieved at 0.5% QC. Under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, the beads demonstrated pH-responsive behavior: EGCG release was slow in gastric fluid (25.1%–44.3%) but increased sharply in intestinal fluid. Overall, QC-modified SA–PPI composite hydrogel beads represent a promising carrier platform with significant potential for targeted intestinal delivery of hydrophilic bioactives such as EGCG.

Nano-selenium functionalized sodium alginate/pectin film with dual enzyme-like activity for antioxidant preservation of postharvest strawberries

Jun Yang,Zhengke Zhang,Xiangbin Xu,Mohammad Rizwan Khan,Naushad Ahmad,Abdorreza Mohammadi Nafchi,Haiming Chen,Wanli Zhang

Sodium alginate/pectin (SP) composite film functionalized with Nano-selenium (SeNPs) stabilized with Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides (DOP) was developed to enhance its physicochemical and biological activity properties. The addition of DOP significantly improved the dispersibility and surface potential of SeNPs, and the nanoparticles stabilized with 100% DOP exhibited the smallest particle size (210.45 nm), highest zeta potential (-7.95 mV), and optimal superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) -like activities. Adding 2% SeNPs to SP film improved UV-blocking performance, matrix density, and thermal stability, as well as extensibility and barrier performance. Among the various formulations, SPS-2 film (SP film ccontaining 2% SeNPs) exhibited the highest antioxidant and antibacterial activity, effectively inhibiting Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) . The high-concentration SeNPs composite film demonstrated high biocompatibility, exhibiting no hemolytic activity against red blood cells and minimal cytotoxicity against RAW 264.7 cells. In a postharvest strawberry preservation test, the SPS-2 coating effectively reduced weight loss and spoilage, maintained firmness and soluble solids, and significantly enhanced antioxidant activity by preserving total phenol and flavonoid content. These results demonstrate that 2% SeNPs-added SP films provide an integrated strategy combining enzyme-mimetic activity, enhanced film performance, and high biosafety, and show promising potential for postharvest fruit preservation.

Highly stable Pickering emulsions stabilized by gelatin–pectin complexes: Interfacial architecture, rheological behavior, and curcumin loading and protection

Biao Liang,Xinying Guo,Yuanyuan Wang,Shumin Yi,Jianrong Li,Beibei Ye,Yanwei Liu,Jinxiang Wang,Cikun Liu,Xuepeng Li

At 9000 s, G i ′ increased by approximately six orders of magnitude relative to C1. • The 0.5% pectin emulsion showed a dense interfacial layer and a 3D network. • At 0.5% pectin, the emulsified phase volume fraction remained at 100% over 180 d. • C1–P0.5 resisted freeze–thaw, thermal, pH, and salt stresses. • Curcumin loading efficiency peaked at 0.3% pectin, while retention peaked at 0.5%. Designing highly stable Pickering emulsions with common biopolymers and expanding their applications to the effective loading of lipophilic bioactives remain formidable challenges. In this study, we successfully fabricated a series of Pickering emulsions stabilized by gelatin–pectin complexes containing gelatin (1.0%, w/w) and pectin (0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%, w/w). Pectin incorporation significantly reduced the mean droplet size and increased the zeta-potential magnitude, with C1–P0.5 reaching < 6 μm and > 35 mV, respectively. Interfacial and bulk rheological measurements, together with cryo-SEM and LF-NMR, indicated that pectin incorporation strengthened both the interfacial layer and the continuous-phase structure, forming a multiscale reinforcing architecture. This architecture comprised a dense, viscoelastic interfacial layer and an interconnected 3D honeycomb-like scaffold, which collectively provided robust electrosteric stabilization and geometric confinement. Consequently, the high-pectin group (C1–P0.5) achieved high stability across a broad range of environmental stressors, including 180-day room temperature storage, freeze–thaw cycles, thermal treatment (60–100 °C), and wide fluctuations in pH and ionic strength (NaCl/MgCl 2 ). Furthermore, the C1–P0.3 formulation achieved a curcumin loading efficiency of > 95%, and pectin incorporation enhanced curcumin retention under UV exposure and thermal treatment. These findings provide a mechanistic basis for using simple biocomposites to develop highly stable Pickering systems for the loading and protection of sensitive lipophilic bioactives.
