Postoperative infection and poor osteogenesis will cause the failure of dental implant surgery. Thus, the antibacterial and osteogenic activities are the core requirements for the surface modification of dental implants. Inspired by the strong chelating ability of naturally occurring phytic acid (PA), an in situ deposition method on the surface of titanium implants was developed based on the metal–phosphate coordination networks. Biologically relevant metal cations (i.e. ferric ions and divalent copper ions) were selected as metal constituents for the construction of organic–inorganic coordination network films. The stability of PA–metal coordination bonds is rationally explained by the chemical nature of transition metal elements. This PA–metal coordination complex coating exhibited an excellent antibacterial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis, reducing the bacterial implant colonization by > 3.92 log10. The abundant phosphate groups greatly increased the surface hydrophilicity, promoted the early adhesion of proteins, improved the proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and finally achieved an enhanced osteogenic activity. In addition, the phosphate groups of PA also facilitated the deposition of hydroxyapatite by providing reaction sites to chelate with calcium ions. These findings evaluate the anti-bacterial and osteogenic potentials of PA–metal coordination complexes, and clarify the feasibility for surface modification of dental implants.

The defects at the interface of SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) /perovskite layer hinder extraction and transfer of charge, which restrict the further improvement of the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of SnO 2 -based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an effective bifunctional anchoring strategy is developed to passivate SnO 2 /perovskite interface defects by adequate chelate sites in polydentate phytic acid dipotassium (PAD) to anchor SnO 2 colloids. It is confirmed that polydentate PAD anchoring can form new Sn-O-P bonds with uncoordinated Sn 2+ , which can efficiently passivate the SnO 2 surface defects and alleviate the interfacial charge recombination between SnO 2 and perovskite layer. The reduction of SnO 2 surface defects enhances the electron transport efficiency and increases the conductivity of the PAD-SnO 2 ETLs to 2.1 times that of SnO 2 ETLs. Meanwhile, the anchoring group potassium ions (K + ) in PAD can promote the in-plane growth of perovskite grains and increase the average grain size of perovskite from 560 nm to 850 nm. As a consequence, the PCE of the PAD-SnO 2 -based PSCs increased sharply to 21.61%, which is 10.7% higher than that of the PSCs made with SnO 2 ETLs (19.52%). The unencapsulated PSCs deposited on PAD-SnO 2 ETLs can remain 99.5% of their initial efficiency after 60 days under 25–30% humidity.

Despite enormous application prospect in wastewater treatment , the moderately hydrophilic ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with the intrinsic pore size has been proved ineffective for removal of highly emulsified oil droplets and organic dyes merely by the size screening effect. Although modification of polymer fibrous membranes by the phytic acid (PA)-metal complex coatings has been widely investigated for updating the membrane performances, the feasibility of this simple dip-coating approach in modifying polymer UF membrane with an asymmetric structure is still unrevealed and required testifying. Herein, we report the modification of asymmetric polysulfone (PSF) UF membranes through the formation of hydrophilic PA-Fe III complex coatings via controlled aggregation. We reveal that 1-cycle crosslinked PA-Fe III sequential assembly with adequate reaction time represents the optimal conditions for achieving PA-Fe III /PSF membranes with desired wettability , separation performances and reusability. The PA-Fe III complex aggregations afford the hierarchical roughness and the high density of phosphonic acid group, which favors the trapping of water and formation of a stable hydration layer to separate highly emulsified oil droplets and prevent them from fouling the membrane. Besides, the molecular layer deposition mode of the PA-Fe III compact film enables a fine adjustment of the pore aperture, guaranteeing the simultaneous rejections to small-sized emulsified droplets and non-specific organic dye molecules. The rapid, easy to scale up, and cost-effective modification process for polymer UF membranes is expected to be of technological significance for various practical applications, especially for sophisticated oily wastewater decontamination .

The treatment of oily wastewater containing water-soluble dyes has drawn attention and become a thorny issue. Aiming at removing oil droplets and dyes from wastewater, it is reported in this work the design of polyelectrolyte deposited dual functional membrane with superior separation and degradation capabilities. The hyperbranched polyamide-amine (HPAMAM) was combined with tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) and phytic acid (PA) through electrostatic interaction to form an eco-friendly polyelectrolyte complex by one-step self-assembly method. Relying on affluent amine group and unique cavity structure as well as wide range of delocalized π-electron systems, TCPP@HPAMAM@PA possesses robust water binding ability and intense absorption in the visible region, endowing PVDF membrane with superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, oil resistance and superior photocatalytic degradation properties. The dual functional TCPP@HPAMAM@PA/PVDF membranes can realize superb removal of oil droplets (oil rejection > 99 %) at high flux recovery rate with several cycles. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) and Methyl blue (MB) reaches 93 % and 96 % respectively, showing standout photocatalytic degradation performance. A facile and low-energy strategy for the modification of commercial PVDF membranes is proposed, which is not only consistent with the concept of green chemistry but also has a broad application in the separation of complex oily wastewater systems.

Bamboo is easily affected by moisture and mold, etc., causing performance deterioration, which limits the practice application. Phytic acid (PA) as abundant biomass resources , can form the polyelectrolyte complexes with cationic charged compounds, and also the coordination complexes with metal ions . In this work, the green and transparent superhydrophobic coating on bamboo surface was developed by deposition and assembly of PA-based hybrid complexes and subsequent hydrophobic treatment. The micro-/nano- hierarchical structure supported by hybrid complexes and the low energy component provided by octadecylamine both contributed to the excellent superhyophobic performance. The contact angle and sliding angle of the modified bamboo surface were 153.2° and 7.5°, respectively, and exhibited great environment and chemical durability. In addition, the superhydrophobic coating endowed bamboo with mildew resistant property. This work demonstrates the potential of PA-based hybrid complexes as constructing superhydrophobic coatings, and also provides an avenue for the fabrication of green and transparent superhydrophobic coatings on bio-based material surfaces.

Three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs composite has been prepared using phytic acid as the phosphorus source by a simple solvothermal method combined with freeze drying under vacuum. The relationships between the phase structures, the morphologies and electrochemical performance characteristics of the as-prepared samples are studied using a series of characterization methods. It is found that the MWCNTs wrap around the LiFePO 4 particles to form a 3D network because of the reactions between the special functional groups of the phytic acid with Fe 2+ and –C O or –COOH on the surface of the functionalized MWCNTs, resulting in the improvement of conductivity and the electron and ion transport. Due to these merits of MWCNTs and phytic acid, the LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs exhibits good electrochemical performance with high initial discharge capacities of 152.7, 149.6 and 138.8 mAh g −1 at 1, 2 and 5C, respectively. Even at 10C, it still delivers a capacity of 117.5 mAh g −1 .

Phytic acid (PA) plays different roles in various fields of study, yet current analytical methods for PA detection are still unsatisfactory. A novel method has been presented for the determination of PA in beverages, based on complete methylation in combination with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. By treatment with (trimethylsilyl) diazomethane, all the polybasic acid groups in PA were converted to the corresponding ester, and thus the corresponding derivative was easily analyzed by LC-MS. The addition of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) to the derivative solution improved the sensitivity and the reproducibility in the PA analysis. Under optimized parameters, the linear range of the PA detection was 0.5–100 μg/L, the limit of detection was 0.075 μg/L, the limit of quantitation was 0.25 μg/L, and the recovery range was 81.3–119.7 %. The PA content was determined for 13 commercially available beverage samples, and experimental results showed that this method provided a practical and reliable method for the detection of PA across diverse beverage matrices.

A novel green composite flame retardant, bismuth oxychloride nanosheet decorated with chitosan and phytic acid (BiOCl@CS-PA) was prepared in order to improve the fire safety of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Introducing phytic acid (PA) is aimed at promoting the flame retardancy of BiOCl nanosheets in condensed phase using the synergistic effects. Chitosan (CS) not only acts as a bridge between BiOCl and PA, but also increases residue as a charring agent. Adequate characterizations verified that the BiOCl@CS-PA has been prepared successfully. When 3 wt.% of BiOCl@CS-PA was imparted into the PVC matrix, the resultant PVC composite can pass V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. Additionally, cone calorimetry test demonstrated that 3 wt.% of BiOCl@CS-PA reduced the first peak heat release rate and inhibited the pronounced peak heat release rate of PVC matrix between 300–400 s in comparison with the BiOCl nanosheets, indicating a further improvement in flame retardancy of PVC/BiOCl@CS-PA composite with the help of PA in the condensed phase. Microstructure and morphology of the char residue of PVC/BiOCl@CS-PA were analyzed to reveal the flame retardant mechanism. The results indicated that the joint action of PA and CS improves the quality of the char layer, which contributes to improving the flame retardancy in condensed-phase.

A bio-based intumescent flame retardant (denoted as PIMEPA@ATH) was synthesized via metal chelation using water as the media. The PIMEPA@ATH complex aggregations was used to improve the flame retardancy of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) by synergistic combination of piperazine-melamine phytate complex (denoted as PIMEPA) and aluminum hydroxide (ATH). During combustion, the in-situ growth of crystalline aluminum metaphosphate arising from PIMEPA@ATH helped to cast more compact protective barriers containing metal ions and aromatic rings. The results showed that the EVA sample containing 30 wt% PIMEPA@ATH achieved the UL-94 V0 rating without dripping in the vertical burning test and a reduction of 79% in peak heat release rate and 58% reduced peak smoke production rate in the cone calorimeter test. Moreover, the tensile properties of EVA/PIMEPA@ATH were improved compared with the EVA/PIMEPA control. Better char formation and improved interfacial adhesion were primarily responsible for the enhancements in flame retardancy and mechanical performance. This work demonstrated the flame-retardant mechanism of PIMEPA@ATH, and explored a facile and green “chelate-mediated” strategy for synthesis of bio-based and ATH chelate-mediated intumescent flame retardant.

A novel hemin/phytic acid doped polyaniline (PA-PANI) hydrogel composite was prepared through a simple chemical and self-assembly method, which was modified onto electrode for electrochemical detection of H 2 O 2 released from living cells. It showed good analytical performance with high sensitivity, selectivity and a rapid response for the analysis of H 2 O 2 in the range of 2 to 102 μM, with the detection limit of 1.2 μM. The favorable results mainly originated from both the high conductivity of PA-PANI hydrogel and its network structure preventing hemin from self-dimerization to provide active catalytic species. Furthermore, PA-PANI with good biocompatibility allowed living cells to adhere and resulted in a short diffusion distance between H 2 O 2 released from cells and electrode.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) represents one of the most promising and attractive bio-based polymers for green packaging. However, toughness, gas barrier and antibacterial properties of pure PLA films cannot compete with those of traditional petroleum-based active packaging plastics. To fill this gap, utilization of excellent chelating properties of phytic acid (PA), functionalized layered double hydroxides (LDHs@PA-Cu(II)) was firstly synthetized via facile deposition and chelation of one-step assembled PA-Cu(II) coordination compounds on the surface of layered clay. Furthermore, LDHs@PA-Cu(II)/PLA nanocomposites were prepared by blending LDHs@PA-Cu(II) and pure PLA via solution casting evaporation process. After adding only 1 wt % LDHs@PA-Cu(II), elongation at break and tensile strength increase by 53.0% and 18.9%, respectively, and the oxygen relative permeability decreases by 28.0%. Due to the strong interface interaction and heterogenous nucleation, the reinforcement effect of LDHs@PA-Cu(II) at low loadings is remarkable. Meanwhile, owing to the antibacterial activity of PA-Cu(II) coatings, the antibacterial rate (against Escherichia coli) of LDHs@PA-Cu(II) exceeds 99.99%. Furthermore, the corresponding LDHs@PA-Cu(II)/PLA nanocomposites also show outstanding antibacterial properties, which will be a promising candidate for active packaging application. Keywords:layered double hydroxides;phytic acid;antibacterial activity;polylactic acid;barrier properties

Nanostructure engineering of heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts can greatly enhance their electrocatalytic activity by increasing the accessible active sites and beneficial physical properties (e.g., surface area, conductivity, etc.). Herein, we successfully constructed ultra-thin N,P co-doped carbon (NPC) on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) by using phytic acid (PA) as a “guide”. The rich phosphate groups in PA allow them to be covalently modified on the surface of CNT by the condensation reaction and to further attract large aniline monomers through acid–base interactions, resulting in the uniform and tight bonding between polyaniline and CNT after the polymerization process. During the subsequent thermal reaction, PA also serves as a self-sacrificial dopant for the formation of ultra-thin NPC and the doping amount of P in NPC can be easily adjusted by changing the amount of PA. Due to the abundance of active sites, large electrochemically active surface area and rapid electron transfer, the developed CNT@NPC presents remarkable electrocatalytic activities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an overpotential of 167, 440 and 304 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in acidic, neutral, and alkaline electrolytes, respectively. In particular, its acidic HER activity exceeds that of most reported metal-free electrocatalysts and is comparable to that of some excellent transition metal-based catalysts. The approach proposed here is of potential importance for the preparation of ideal heteroatom-doped carbon/nanocarbon composites for use in a variety of future energy conversion systems.
