The practical implementation of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries is still impeded by two fundamental challenges: the low conductivity of lithium sulfide species (Li2S2/Li2S) and the shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). To tackle these issues, we propose an efficient polysulfide regulation strategy via a functional separator coated with Bi2Se3@NiSe2 heterostructures anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs). The rationally constructed Bi2Se3@NiSe2 interfaces not only offer strong chemisorption toward LiPSs but also act as highly active electrocatalysts to facilitate their conversion kinetics, particularly the nucleation and decomposition of Li2S. Coupled with the three-dimensional conductive network of N-CNTs, which ensures rapid electron/ion transport, the designed separator significantly suppresses the shuttle effect and enhances redox efficiency. As a result, Li–S batteries equipped with the Bi2Se3@NiSe2/N-CNT-modified separator achieve a remarkable initial discharge capacity of 1418.24 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and outstanding long-term cyclability with a minimal decay rate of 0.083% per cycle over 500 cycles at 1 C. In situ X-ray diffraction further verifies the reversible phase evolution between α-S8 and Li2S during cycling. This work highlights the potential of bimetallic selenide heterostructures as multifunctional catalytic interlayers and provides a feasible pathway toward advanced separators for durable Li–S batteries.

en The dual challenges of environmental sustainability and rising energy needs underscore the necessity for high-energy-density batteries, making lithium–sulfur (LSB) systems with their high theoretical capacity highly attractive. However, the polysulfide shuttle, coupled with inherent kinetic limitations in the sulfur reduction reaction, significantly compromises the battery's commercialization. Utilizing biomass-derived materials presents a sustainable and cost-effective approach to mitigating these issues. Therefore, in this study, a series of cobalt–nitrogen co-doped porous carbon materials (Co,N-C) were prepared from ramie waste glue by adjusting the cobalt source content, and their electrochemical properties as sulfur hosts were systematically investigated. Among them, Co,N-C-2 exhibits the best performance. The three-dimensional (3D) porous architecture promotes electrolyte penetration and lithium–ion mobility, whereas the Co,N co-doping sites effectively adsorb lithium polysulfides, markedly reducing the shuttle effect and improving conversion kinetics. The Co,N-C-2/S cathode has an initial discharge capacity of 1274.2 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and sustains a reversible capacity of 540.6 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles at 1C, demonstrating a minimal degradation rate of 0.11% each cycle. This study offers a sustainable and cost-effective design strategy for high-performance LSBs.

Meliorating the behavior deposition of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) is crucial for enhancing the electrochemical performance of sulfur cathodes, which could be implemented by the precise modulation on the catalytic host. Herein, heterostructure engineering is employed to tune up the catalytic capability of CeVO 4 , by introducing CeO 2 through a simple adjustment in the addition sequence of reactants. The formed CeVO 4 /CeO 2 heterostructure has been demonstrated to exhibit appropriate interaction strength with LiPS for accelerating the catalytic conversion process, as well as an engineered surface for inducing three dimensional (3D) Li 2 S deposition, thereby endowing the corresponding sulfur cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance under harsh conditions. The S/CeVO 4 /CeO 2 cathode could deliver a high capacity of 36.5 mAh cm −2 (1278.9 mAh g −1 ) under high sulfur loading of 28.5 mg cm −2 and lean electrolyte dosage of 6 μL mg −1 , and also function well even under a wide temperature range (−30 ∼ 60 °C) or matching with polymer solid electrolyte. This work offers a simple yet practical strategy to modulate the catalysts for sulfur cathodes with heterostructure design, thereby advancing the practical implementation of the lithium–sulfur battery.

Aqueous polysulfide/iodide redox flow battery (RFB) with highly soluble active species are attractive candidates for scalable energy storage, offering noticeable reduced RFB cost. Though, poor reversibility and electrochemical activity of the redox reaction of polysulfide couples on graphite felt electrode restricts its energy efficiency. Herein, a facile method to improve the electrocatalytic activity by fabrication of skeletal Cu 7 S 4 hollow nanocages with copper vacancies is presented. Cu 7 S 4 nanoparticles can selectively boost the electrocatalytic activities of S 2− /S x 2- redox reactions and suppress the hydrogen evolution side reaction. In addition, the hollow opening structure of skeletal Cu 7 S 4 served as the catalytic active site (both the inner side and outer surface), accelerating the electrolyte transport and promoting the charge transfer process. A sandwiched electrode was constructed by coating Cu 7 S 4 nanocages into the interlayer of graphite felt. The polysulfide/iodide flow battery with SKE-Cu 7 S 4 sandwich structure electrode can generate high energy efficiency of 78.5% at 20 mA cm −2 , power density of 30.6 mW cm −2 and a stable energy efficiency retention of 92% after approximately 200 continuous cycles suggesting their potential use for future scalable RFBs. The developing of highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst for the electro-conversion of polysulfides will boost the performance and application of polysulfide-based flow batteries and other energy devices involved with polysulfides such as, quantum dots sensitized solar cells, Li–S batteries.

Development of efficient, low-cost, and bifunctional catalysts based on ultrathin heterostructures for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for advancing overall water splitting. In this study, we design a simple intercalation-sulfidation strategy by rigid segment-containing Polysulfide as a sulfur source and in-situ intercalation for the construction of the metastable 1 T'-2H'-phase Mo-Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures (1 T'-2H'-Mo-Ni 3 S 2 ). It is found that the Polysulfides with rigid segments can be controlled by various monomers reacted with reverse sulfurization reactions between various monomers and elemental sulfur, such as Poly (sulfur-random-1,3-Benzenedithiol), Poly (sulfur-random-1,4-Benzenedithiol), and Poly (sulfur-random-4,4′-Biphenyldithiol), which can be used to assist in the synthesis process of metastable. Attributing to favorable synergy interaction in composition and structure, the resultant 1 T'-2H' phase Mo-Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures shows the superior performances toward OER and water splitting in alkaline medium. The resultant Mo-Ni 3 S 2 -BDP needs only an overpotential of 103 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and for OER. For HER, it demonstrates a low overpotential of 136 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and a relatively low cell voltage of 1.672 V for water splitting. The present provides a new strategy to design and develop the phase engineering of other materials with various Polymorphs.

This study introduces an improved design of interlayers to achieve a balance between high Li+ diffusion and polysulfide inhibition in lithium–sulfur batteries. The design involves encapsulating mesoporous SiO2 nanospheres in few-layer MoS2 nanosheets via a facile one-step self-assembly to form a core–shell nanocomposite (SiO2@MoS2). The SiO2@MoS2 layer overlaid on a sulfur cathode simultaneously intercepts polysulfides and ensures rapid Li+ diffusion. Few-layer MoS2 as the shell is capable of breaking up polysulfides by a catalytic reaction, while mesoporous SiO2 as the core allows for physiochemical adsorption of such species; moreover, the densely packed hermetic SiO2@MoS2 nanocomposite layer provides an additional physical shield against polysulfide diffusion, realizing the full protection of the whole cathode. At the same time, the high Li+ density in the nanolayered MoS2 shell and the additional Li+ pathways created by the mesoporous SiO2 core allow for fast Li+ diffusion. Thus, a pristine sulfur cathode battery with a SiO2@MoS2 interlayer exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance with a negligible capacity decay of 0.028% per cycle over 2500 cycles. The core–shell design suggested in this study could be extended to other nanomaterials for the optimization of Li–S battery interlayers.

In the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, various approaches have been adopted to enhance the electronic conductivity of the sulfur cathode and alleviate the shuttle effect of polysulfides; however, the strategies providing efficient solutions are still limited. To further improve the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries, in this work we propose a new strategy involving the incorporation of a three-dimensional functional spongy framework as polysulfide reservoir layer, with strong absorbability and electrocatalytic activity towards sulfur species. The spongy framework has a hierarchical architecture composed of highly conductive Ni foam/graphene/carbon nanotubes/MnO 2 nanoflakes (NGCM). The strongly interconnected Ni foam, graphene, and carbon nanotubes of the NGCM sponge facilitate electron transfer during discharge/charge processes; moreover, the superlyophilic properties of the NGCM sponge ensure good wettability and interface contact with the Li-S electrolyte, and the porous MnO 2 nanoflakes provide strong chemisorptive and electrocatalytic effects on polysulfides (as confirmed theoretically and experimentally). The NGCM sponge, serving as a polysulfide reservoir layer attached on a conventional sulfur-mixed carbon nanotubes (S/CNTs) cathode, can provide improved reversible capacity, rate capability (593 mAh·g –1 at 3.0 C), and cycling stability. In addition, the self-discharge rate is greatly reduced, owing to the efficient conservation of polysulfides in the NGCM spongy framework.

Lithium‑sulfur (Li-S) batteries are a highly promising energy storage technology due to their exceptionally high theoretical energy density. However, their practical implementation faces significant challenges, including sluggish redox kinetics and the troublesome shuttling of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). In this work, a hierarchical TiO 2-x nanostructure was utilized as the sulfur host. Sulfur was uniformly integrated into the structure through a melt-diffusion infiltration process. The introduced oxygen vacancies in TiO 2-x provide strong chemical adsorption of polysulfides, effectively suppressing the shuttle effect and reducing active material loss. The nanoflower architecture-composed of interconnected nanosheets-offers a high specific surface area (104.45 m 2 g −1 ) and large pore volume (0.4698 cm 3 g −1 ). This design not only increases the number of accessible active sites but also helps accommodate volume changes during cycling. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) confirms the abundance of oxygen vacancies, which act as catalytic sites to enhance polysulfide anchoring and accelerate Li 2 S nucleation kinetics. As a result, the TiO 2-x -CNS@S cathode achieves a high initial discharge capacity of 1398 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and demonstrates remarkable long-term cycling stability. At 1C, it maintains an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.054% per cycle over 1000 cycles. This dual-functional host design offers an effective and scalable strategy to simultaneously improve reaction kinetics and cycling durability in high-performance Li-S batteries.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are widely accepted representatives of next-generation energy storage with high energy density . However, the high flammability of polypropylene (PP) separators and ether electrolytes deteriorates the safety of LSBs. Moreover, the severe shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) induces the capacity degradation and poor cycle stability of LSBs. In this work, we unprecedentedly synthesize multifunctional micro-nano-sized particles (ACNP) that are constructed on PP separators to improve the safety and electrochemical performance of LSBs. The ACNP is obtained by the electrostatic assembly of ammonium polyphosphate and chitosan. The presence of ACNP decreases the burning process and improves the thermal stability of separators and electrolytes. Besides, the temperature of pouch cells during combustion is decreased after the addition of ACNP or ACNP@super-P(SP) interlayers. Moreover, the abundant N-containing and O-containing groups in the ACNP layer effectively inhibit the shuttle effect of LiPSs via chemical adsorption , increase the affinity to electrolytes, and facilitate the Li + diffusion and redox kinetics. The SP enhances the conductivity of the interlayer, thus enhancing the capacity and cycle stability of LSBs. It is expected that this work provides a universal strategy to enhance the safety of separators as well as the batteries .

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted increasing attention due to high theoretical energy density and low cost of sulfur. However, there are still many challenges regarding sulfur cathodes such as the “shuttle effect” of polysulfides , insulating properties of sulfur and Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S, and the sluggish redox kinetics. In this study, the nanorod-like Sb-doped SnO 2 nanofibers (ATO NFs) with hollow structure were prepared by the electro-blown spinning technology and calcination processes, and used as a sulfur host for cathode materials . The internal hollow structure and the nanorod-like structure on the surface of the nanofibers with the increased specific surface area are beneficial to load sulfur and improve transport channels of electrons and lithium ions . And the hollow nanofibers also can well accommodate to huge volume changes in the reaction process. More importantly, the ATO NFs with hollow structure have good physical confinement and chemical adsorption performance to polysulfides. Based on these merits, the ATO NFs composite cathode exhibits a high initial discharge specific capacity of 765.3 mAh g −1 and maintains 550.6 mAh g −1 after 900 cycles at a rate of 2 C with 1.9 mg cm −2 sulfur loading. More importantly, high initial area discharge specific capacity of the electrode is 5.5 mAh cm −2 at 0.1 C with sulfur loading of 5.6 mg cm −2 . Even, at a rate of 0.2 C, the area capacity still is stabilized at 3.5 mAh cm −2 after 100 cycles. The work illustrates that the ATO NFs for LSBs exhibit good cycling stability over a long period of time, entering the ranks of high performance and ultra-stable capacity. And it also facilitate to expand the scope of application of ATO NFs in other related energy storage fields.

Bimetallic alloy catalysts, due to their more adsorption sites, more abundant electronic structures, and higher catalytic properties than single-metal ones, have attracted much interest in the field of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs). However, many LSBs with bimetallic alloys often suffered from their low cycling stability, which was caused by the over-strong adsorption and the bad chemical stability of the catalysts. Herein, in-situ carbon-encapsulation-induced strain relaxation strategy has been adopted to balance the adsorption and catalytic properties of the MoNi 4 bimetallic nanoalloy catalyst for LSBs. As a result, the cathode with strained-MoNi 4 embedded carbon nanofibers (CNF@s-MoNi 4 ) delivers a high capacity (1632.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C), a superior rate capability (retaining 832.4 mAh g –1 at 5.0 C) and excellent cycling stability (decaying rate of 0.0204% per cycle over 520 cycles at 1.0 C). Even at high rates, the CNF@s-MoNi 4 can keep a stable cycling capacity (827.5 mAh g –1 and 447.7 mAh g –1 after 250 cycles at 5.0 C and 10.0 C, respectively). Besides, the CNF@s-MoNi 4 LSB also exhibits an excellent wide-temperature-range adaptability (-30 ∼ 50°C) and a superior dynamic bending stability. This study would provide a feasible method for developing high-capacity and long-life LSBs with a wide temperature range demand.

Polysulfide-based multilevel memorizers are promising as novel memorizers, in which the occurrence of Sn2– relaxation is key for their multilevel memory. However, the effects of crystal packing and the side group of organic ligands on Sn2– relaxation are still ambiguous. In this work, ionic [Zn(S6)2·Zn2(Bipy)2SO4 (1), Zn(S6)2·Zn(Pmbipy)3 (2)] and neutral [ZnS6(Ombipy) (3), ZnS6(Phen)2 (4)] Zn/polysulfide/organic complexes with different packing modes and structures of organic ligands have been synthesized and were fabricated as memory devices. In both ionic and neutral Zn complexes, the S62– relaxation will be blocked by steric hindrances due to the packing of counter-cations and hydrogen-bond restrictions. Consequently, only the binary memory performances can be seen in FTO/1/Ag, FTO/2/Ag, and FTO/4/Ag, which originate from the more condensed packing of conjugated ligands upon electrical stimulus. Interestingly, FTO/3/Ag illustrates the unique thermally triggered reversible binary–ternary switchable memory performance. In detail, after introducing a methyl group on the 6′-position of bipyridine in ZnS6(Ombipy) (3), the ring-to-chain relaxation of S62– anions at room temperature will be inhibited, but it can happen at a higher temperature of 120 °C, which has been verified by elongated S–S lengths and the strengthened C–H···S hydrogen bond upon heating. The rules drawn in this work will provide a useful guide for the design of stimulus-responsive memorizers that can be applied in special industries such as automobile, oil, and gas industries.
