Multi-stimuli-responsive phase change hydrogels with dynamic fluorescence chromism based on AIE hydrophobic carbon dots for advanced encryption

Zhu Jinliang,Sun Xiaohan,Zhou Jiazuo,Liu Yifan,Ji Xinyao,Wang Fangmiao,Li Congteng,Tian Xue,Dong Xin,Ba Shuaijie,Yang Haiyue,Wang Chengyu

Stimuli-responsive fluorescent hydrogels, owing to their tunable optical property and unique smart response characteristics, have significant potential in encryption applications and information security. However, most current systems are limited to single-stimulus responsiveness and lack the capability for programmable information erasure or multi-modal dynamic synergy. Hence, we propose a multi-stimuli-responsive phase-change hydrogel incorporating aggregation-induced emission hydrophobic carbon dots (AIE-HCDs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-cellulose network, demonstrating dynamic fluorescence chromism under various external triggers. The hydrogel exhibits solvent-exchange-triggered fluorescence color changes from blue to red, enabled by the concentration modulation of AIE-HCDs through the exchange between PEG and water. Additionally, the temperature-induced phase transition of PEG from crystalline to molten state modulates the aggregation and dispersion of AIE-HCDs, thereby enabling dynamic fluorescence color changes. The phase transition further confers excellent shape-memory behavior and adjustable mechanical properties, with the tensile modulus varying from 6.28 MPa in the molten state to 36.23 MPa in the crystalline state, while maintaining high transparency (∼8% in the molten state). By utilizing microcontact printing and the multi-stimulus response, an encryption platform enables information to be hidden, selectively read under sequential stimuli (thermal, UV, and solvent), and completely erased upon demand. This strategy demonstrates significant potential for advancing high-level information encryption and anti-counterfeiting technologies. Synthesis, characterization and aggregation-induced emission mechanism of AIE-active hyperbranched polysiloxane derivatives with C=C and acyloxy groups

Jia Yuan,Yang Ziyi,Yang Juxiang,Li Beibei,Liu Zhen

Hyperbranched polysiloxanes (HBPSi) are novel non-conjugated polymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and modifiable terminals, and have attracted attention due to their unique topology and functional potential. In this study, two AIE-active HBPSi derivatives (OA-HBPSi and IBO-HBPSi, where OA stands for oleic acid and IBO stands for isobutyric acid) containing C=C and acyloxy groups were successfully synthesized via transesterification. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) was used to characterize their molecular weight distributions; Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid-state Photoluminescence (PL) were employed to elucidate their structure-property relationships. Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and fluorescence spectrophotometry were applied to investigate their AIE behavior under solvent concentration gradients, with a focus on luminescence mechanisms. The results showed a non-monotonic relationship between fluorescence intensity and the molecular weight (M w ) of HBPSi derivatives: fluorescence intensity is enhanced with moderate M w elevation but reduced at excessively high M w due to molecular packing effects and acyloxy group rotation. Notably, as the volume fraction of CCl 4 reached the range that induces significant polymer aggregation, the intensities of both excitation peaks (266–294 nm, UV region) and emission peaks (440–460 nm, blue visible region) increased exponentially—this trend reflects the dependence of blue luminescence on polymer aggregation degree, supporting the proposed cluster-induced emission hypothesis. Consistent with FTIR spectral shifts and solvent-dependent PL behavior, we propose a mechanism hypothesis: the AIE of these derivatives originates from the synergy of “non-conjugated functional group clusters” in the polymers. Cluster-induced electronic delocalization and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between C=C and acyloxy groups may facilitate exciton radiative transitions, while the 3D hyperbranched spatial hindrance restricts excessive intermolecular aggregation—collectively suppressing non-radiative transition pathways. In Situ Characterization and Interfacial Viscoelastic Properties of Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by AIE-Active Modified Alginate and Chitosan Complexes

Sihui Wan,Qu Zeng,Shujuan Yang,Xinyu Zhao,Qiyan Wen,Haiyun Tang,Yamei Zhang,Junhao Huang,Gaobo Yu,Yuhong Feng,Jiacheng Li

Pickering emulsions stabilized by polysaccharide–polysaccharide complexes are attractive in many applications. However, how interface films formed by soft particles affect the stability of Pickering emulsions has not been well explored. Herein, we designed aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active modified alginate (Alg-AIE)/chitosan (CS) polyelectrolyte complex (Alg-AIE/CS complex) colloidal particles that are used to stabilize Pickering emulsions. To explore the relationship between the interface film structure and emulsification properties, the microstructure of emulsions was directly visualized by a combination of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wetting properties of Alg-AIE/CS complexes were regulated by changing the amount of CS, which further regulated the aggregation behavior of the interface. The interfacial adsorption behavior of the particles and the physical stability of the emulsions were determined by combining stability analysis and employing a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The results showed that the addition of CS resulted in more Alg-AIE/CS complexes that could be adsorbed at the oil–water interface, forming thicker and stronger viscoelastic interface films, which improved the stability of the emulsion. Most importantly, in situ visualization technology provided a new way to understand the interfacial properties of Pickering emulsions.

Enhanced ternary memory performances with high-temperature tolerance in AIE@PBI composites by tuning the azobenzol substituents on tetraphenylethylene

P.K. Zhou,K.Y. Song,L.L. Zong,Z.C. Yang,H.H. Li,Z.R. Chen

The design of functional composites with desired film crystallinity and definite switching mechanism is the key to achieve high performance multilevel memorizers. Three aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules containing different azobenzol (Azo) groups on tetraphenylethylene (TPE) were synthesized and embedded into polybenzimidazole (PBI) to prepare AIE@PBI composites, which were further fabricated as FTO/TPE-Azo-n@PBI/Ag (n = 01, 02, 04) devices with well-defined crystalline characteristics. These devices can demonstrate clear ternary memory performances, among which TPE-Azo-04@PBI-based one exhibited the best performance with the current ratio of 1:10 4.2 :10 6.7 for “OFF”, “ON1”, and “ON2” states. The ternary memory mechanism can be designed as the combination of aggregation-induced current/conductance (AIC) and packing conformational change-induced charge transfer in TPE-Azo-n, which were verified by UV–Vis, in-situ XRD , and single-crystal structural determinations and theoretical calculations. The trend of ternary memory performance improved by increasing Azo groups on TPE can be attributed to the larger steric hindrance due to the more Azo groups, which can inhibit their aggregations and packing conformational change in PBI-confined space. Specially, this kind of devices can present high-temperature tolerance of 350  ° C. The verified mechanism in this work might provide a practicable model for the design of new high-density memorizers with good environmental tolerance. The current ratio of OFF/ON1/ON2 increases with the Azo.

Organic–inorganic nanohybrids based on an AIE luminogen-functional polymer and CdTe/ZnS QDs: morphologies, optical properties, and applications

Bingfeng Shi,Jianhua Lü,Ying Liu,Yang Xiao,Changli Lü

Nano-light materials have attracted great interest in materials research due to their excellent fluorescent properties. The hybrid assembly of various nano-optical materials combines their advantages, extending the scope of potential applications. Herein, we report a fluorescence organic–inorganic hybrid nanostructure (T-PNI@QDs) based on binding red-emitting CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to blue-emitting aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polymeric micelles in aqueous media with dual-channel emission. The AIE-active polymeric micelles were obtained by the self-assembly of thiol-terminated tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized poly(N-isopropylmethacylamide) (T-PNI-SH) in water. An interesting assembly behaviour of transformation from a worm-like to a core–shell structure was observed by controlling the ratio of QDs/polymers due to the coordinated interaction between the QDs and the thiol groups. The dual-emission of T-PNI@QDs has obvious temperature-sensitive behaviour on account of PNIPAM. The novel fluorescent hybrid nanostructure was used as a probe to selectively detect picric acid (PA) in pure water. We expect this work will open up a new perspective for the construction of organic–inorganic hybrids based on different nano-light materials.

Novel platform for visualization monitoring of hydrolytic degradation of bio-degradable polymers based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) technique

Huanhuan Ma,Andong Zhang,Xiaomeng Zhang,Haitao Zhao,Zhe Cui,Peng Fu,Minying Liu,Shuzhen Zhou,Xinchang Pang,Xiaoguang Qiao

Although lots of works have been done on the hydrolysis of synthetic biodegradable polymers, the methods for monitoring the degradation process still suffer from some disadvantages, especially in terms of detection speed and non-invasive manners. In this work, a fast, non-invasive visualization monitoring platform was developed for hydrolytic degradation of bio-degradable polymers based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) technique. We synthesized and introduced an amphiphilic AIE probe to the commercial polylactide (PLA) matrix through a simple co-precipitation process. Amphiphilic AIE probes gradually entered the aqueous media during the hydrolytic degradation process of PLA matrix, which exhibited fluorescence evolution. The variation of fluorescence emission corresponding to the evolution of PLA mass loss could be easily observed by naked eyes. Compared to traditional characterization techniques based on mass loss and molar mass measurements by sampling, this method is sensitive, fast and non-invasive, and has the potential to become a standard method for commercial bio-degradable product testing.

Silver metallization-triggered liposome-embedded AIE fluorophore for dual-mode detection of biogenic amines to fight food freshness fraud

Xiang Gao,Peng Nie,Peiran Li,Zhi Zheng,Jieshun Cheng,Ying Gu,Yizhong Shen

To combat food freshness fraud, it is urgent to develop a method which could realize the detection of biogenic amines (BAs) present in food. In our study, we developed a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence dual-mode sensor which integrated with silver metallization-based response system of AIE liposome + OPD + RSM + Ag + toward BAs in foods for fighting freshness fraud. With the hydrolysis from the alkaline of BAs to resorcinol monoacetate (RSM), the production resorcinol (RS) could metallize silver ion (Ag + ) to silver atoms (Ag 0 ) which could lead to a BAs concentration-dependent decrease of the oxidation product 2,3-diaminophenothiazine (DAP) of Ag + to o -phenylenediamine (OPD). As a result, the dual-mode sensor has a low detection limit and wide linear range in the spiked detection of soy products, pork and milk samples for BAs. Thus, providing a reliable method for food safety and forestalling food freshness fraud.

Huang Hongye,Liu Meiying,Chen Junyu,Mao Liucheng,Wan Qing,Wen Yuanqing,Deng Fengjie,Zhou Naigen,Zhang Xiaoyong,Wei Yen

Abstract Since the first discovery by Tang in 2001, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon has attracted considerable research interest in various fields. In this contribution, AIE-active composites (named as An-HPG-β-CD) have been fabricated via conjugation of AIE-active compound An-B(OH) 2 and hyperbranched polyglycerol functionalized β cyclodextrin (HPG-β-CD) based on dynamic phenyl borate for the first time. The potential biomedical applications of these AIE-active composites for biological imaging and drug delivery applications were further explored. The successful preparation of An-HPG-β-CD composites was confirmed through a series of characterization techniques. The An-HPG-β-CD composites possess great water dispersibility, low cytotoxicity, excellent fluorescence properties and uniform size and morphology, which make them promising for cell imaging. Furthermore, the cavities of An-HPG-β-CD composites could be utilized for loading with doxorubicin for drug delivery applications. In conclusion, we have developed a novel method for fabrication of AIE-active An-HPG-β-CD composites through formation of dynamic phenylboronic borate between β cyclodextrin containing hyperbranched polyglycerol and phenylboronic containing AIE dye. These AIE-active composites are of great potential in biological imaging and drug delivery applications. Graphic abstract

A Label-free Fluorescent Aptasensor for Turn-on Monitoring Ochratoxin A Based on AIE-active Probe and Graphene Oxide

Ma Lian,Xu Bin,Liu Leijing,Tian Wenjing

A label-free fluorescent aptasensor for specific and ultrasensitive monitoring ochratoxin A(OTA) was developed using the specific aptamer of OTA(OSA) as recognition element, an aggregation-induced emission(AIE) molecule(a 9,10-distyrylanthracene with two ammonium groups, DSAI) as a fluorescent probe, and graphene oxide(GO) as a quencher. In the absence of OTA, the AIE probe DSAI and OSA complex(DSAI/OSA) is adsorbed on the GO surface, and the fluorescence of DSAI will be quenched efficiently via the fluorescence resonance energy transfer(FRET) from DSAI to GO. Upon the OTA addition, a more stable complex(OSA-OTA) is formed and released from GO. Meanwhile, DSAI and OSA-OTA can form a new complex(DSAI/OSA-OTA), then the fluorescent signal of DSAI recovers gradually. Therefore, by introducing GO and DSAI, the fluorescence signal of DSAI can be easily turned from “off” to “on” after the addition of OTA, and the ultrasensitive detection of OTA by monitoring the change of the fluorescence signal of DSAI can be readily realized. The detection limit of the assay can reach 0.324 nmol/L with a linear detection range of 10—200 nmol/L. And the aptasensor exhibits high selectivity for OTA against other analogues. Moreover, it has been successfully applied for the detection of OTA in red wine samples.

Fabrication of AIE-active fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles with red emission through a facile catalyst-free amino-yne click polymerization

Ruming Jiang,Meiying Liu,Hongye Huang,Liucheng Mao,Qiang Huang,Yuanqing Wen,Qian-yong Cao,Jianwen Tian,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

Fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FPNs) as novel probes have attracted more and more attention for biomedical applications owing to their optical properties and multifunctional potential. However, most of FPNs based on conventional organic fluorogens encounter serious aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. In this work, to overcome these problems, amphiphilic fluorescent copolymers [Poly(PEGY-PhE)] containing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogens (AIEgens) have been prepared via a facile amino-yne click polymerization under rather mild experimental conditions (catalyst-free and room temperature). The Poly(PEGY-PhE) copolymers can self-assemble into FPNs and be well dispersed in aqueous solution. Fluorescence spectra demonstrate that Poly(PEGY-PhE) FPNs possess strong red fluorescence, excellent photostability and low critical micelle concentration . The biological assays confirm that these AIE-active Poly(PEGY-PhE) FPNs possess low cytotoxicity towards L929 cells and cell dyeing performance. More importantly, this amino-yne click polymerization provides a simple strategy to prepare robust biocompatible fluorescent nanoparticles for biological imaging because of their high efficiency, mild reaction conditions and simple experimental operation procedure.

Facile fabrication of amphiphilic AIE active glucan via formation of dynamic bonds: self assembly, stimuli responsiveness and biological imaging

Qing Wan,Meiying Liu,Dazhuang Xu,Hongye Huang,Liucheng Mao,Guangjian Zeng,Fengjie Deng,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

Fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties have recently emerged as one of the most promising luminescent nanomaterials for biomedical applications due to their unique AIE feature. In this study, we reported the preparation of AIE active FONs through mixing AIE dye (TPE-CHO), 3-aminobenzeneboronic acids (ABBA) and glucan in one-pot. ABBA acted as a molecular “bridge” to conjugate TPE-CHO with glucan via formation of a Schiff base and phenyl borate. The resultant products (Glu–TPE FONs) showed amphiphilic properties and could self-assemble into nanoparticles in an aqueous solution. Glu–TPE FONs showed strong luminescence intensity and high water dispersibility because of the AIE properties of TPE-CHO and hydrophilic nature of glucan. To examine the biomedical application potential of glucan–AIE FONs, the responsiveness, biocompatibility and cell uptake behavior of Glu–TPE FONs were subsequently examined. We demonstrated that Glu–TPE FONs possess good biocompatibility and can be potentially used for biological imaging applications. More importantly, it is well known that the Schiff base and phenyl borate can respond to pH and glucose. Therefore, Glu–TPE FONs can be used for the fabrication of multifunctional biomaterials with stimuli responsiveness.

Preparation of water soluble and biocompatible AIE-active fluorescent organic nanoparticles via multicomponent reaction and their biological imaging capability

Zi Long,Meiying Liu,Ruming Jiang,Qing Wan,Liucheng Mao,Yiqun Wan,Fengjie Deng,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

Fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features have been extensively investigated for bio-imaging applications because of their unique AIE properties, biocompatibility, and well designability. In this work, AIE-active FONs have been fabricated via a “one pot” mercaptoacetic acid locking imine (MALI) reaction, in which aldehyde groups containing AIE-active dye (named as CHO-An-CHO) was covalently conjugated with NH 2 -terminated polymers (PEG-PABA) to form amphiphilic luminescent polymers using mercaptoacetic acid (MTA) as the “lock” molecule. These final polymers (denoted as PEG-PABA-An-CHO) possessed amphiphilic properties and could self-assemble into PEG-PABA-An-CHO FONs with excellent water dispersibility. Furthermore, thus PEG-PABA-An-CHO FONs displayed enhanced luminescence in aqueous solution due to the aggregation of AIE feature of CHO-An-CHO. More importantly, thus final PEG-PABA-An-CHO FONs exhibited desirable biocompatibility and fluorescent imaging performance. As compared with traditional stepwise methods that are laborious, time-consuming and involve separation and purification of intermediate products, thus “one pot” strategy relied on MALI reaction showed distinct advantages, including simplicity, high efficiency, universality and atom-economy. Thanks to the good applicability of MCR-MALI reaction towards different substrates, this “one pot” strategy should be a useful tool for preparing sophisticated and multifunctional AIE-active materials for different applications potential.
